It really depends on you opinion. Do you want the world to be dominated by a "God" who passing judgement on the bad or Do you like the way the Earth is now? Or Do you like Light's ways of correcting the world? It all depends. For me, I choose L. One, because the way that he thinks is totally logical and he goes through the investigation the right way, in my opinion. Two, he is effing cute!! <3

Raito_Kun Sekia-san Well that would be a hard choice. L and Raito both have a strong sense of justice and are a lot alike but with one difference. The way they set out their goals. Raito uses fear to get his goals and L respect. i would say the bad gut is usually the one that uses fear. Though I will say this Raito did have good intensions at first but like alot of people with power it got to his head. I see. So your calling light a TERRORIST!?!?! Well Kira/Light is definitely a terrorist. His rule is through fear (ie Terror). He wants the villains of the world to fear the wrath of Kira. That's very easily the definition of terrorist.

i totally dont have a problem with Light using the Deathnote to kill criminals that DESERVE it. but...then Light used the Deathnote to try to kill L and Near and Mello. he was totally OBSESSING over murdering them, and they were all innocent people! (well, maybe not Mello, but if there was no Kira, he would never have joined a gang!) also, killing the FBI agents was wrong, for the exact same reason. that is NOT justice, much LESS righteousness!!!!! also, Light was killing all of the murderers without a second thought, but he was a murderer himself. that logic is crazy! (Near: Your a crazy mass murderer. Nothing more and nothing less.) another thing that bugged me was that Light thought of himself as a god and obsessed over people calling him "god", which is just NOT right!!!

I think Raito definitely had the right idea in the beginnig, but killing the FBI and all others that gets in his way is kind of over doing it.... but hey... i'm biased since i like crazy maniacs

If Raito maintained at least a little sanity, what he was doing would have been right for the world. But since that didn't happen... Go L! sweatdrop

the whole good guy/bad guy thing isn't really set out in black in white in DN like most manga's.
It leaves it up to the reader & It really depends on your sense of justice. I for one think they both had good & bad ideals. But I mostly agree with light's ideals in the start.

Well, lets see. Who was the one that became obsessed with writting down names in a book that never ends? Hmmm. I wonder. There is a thick line where obession becomes an addiction. Raito went beyond the addiction point. Then it just becames to a point where it's on the edge of becoming Parkinson's Disease.

I think that one of the points Death Note makes is that good and evil aren't so clearly defined. Because of this, it's more difficult to decide which side is good; really, it should be impossible to determine exactly.
I mean sure, L's group is the side you'd assume to be the good guys right away. After all, they're trying to stop a mass murderer, right?
But then if you look on the other side, Light is trying to eliminate all crime in the world. He's working much more with the big picture to make the world a better place. What's the difference between his methods and capital punishment?
My point is, both sides could be arguably good and bad. And that's one of the things the author is trying to convey. Morality isn't black and white like so many people would like it to be.

Death Note isn't really a "hero and villian" anime, that's why there are many people with different points of view in who is the good and the bad guy. I don't see L as the good guy, however, he has a lot more decency that Light, since he doensn't go around killing everyone in order to become a god. Light on the other hand acts like some sort of maniac, but he actually had good intentions in the beggining :3 The were both just doing what they tought was right, but I agree with L a lot more than with Light.
And the only characters that I consider the good ones are, like other people said, the police force whee
