RavenPiper Its definitly Jack Sparrow. That's why he keeps going through all the trouble to get it. And originally, the Black Pearl belong to Davy Jones. Then Jack Sparrow made a bargain with Davy Jones to be captain of the ship for 13 years. But Barbosa led a mutiny after Jack's first 2 years, and made himself captain for the remaining 11. So finally, Jack makes his move to get the boat back (as seen in POTC 1). Jack gets it back and then gets eaten by the Kraken, so Barbosa is asked to captain the Pearl again so everyone can find Jack (as seen in POTC 2). Lastly, Jack will be captain again because the pearl is rightfully his (as I'm hoping is the case in POTC 3). Did that help at all? yes, but one thing: Jack had the pearl first but it had a different name...something happened and sunk his ship to the bottom of the ocean, so he made a deal with Davy to bring it back up.

aRs0n Davy Jones rose the ship from the bottom of the sea and Jack rechristened the Wicked wench the "Black Pearl," and was given a debt to pay by Jones for doing so (which you see jack in the second movie trying to escape from). Jack was captain for several years, but it was primarily captained by Barbossa, who held a mutiny.
Originally, the Pearl was the Wicked Wench, owned by Beckett of the East India Trading Company with Jack as the captain. Jack was labeled a Pirate and the Ship ordered to be sunk for his release of Slave cargo.
I say whoever controls it at the time is the owner. yep!!! thats what happened. heart

Its actually Beckett who owns it. It was under the command of Beckett and the EITCo. until Jack disobeyed Beckett's orders about some slave trade and he turned Pirate.
So Beckett originally owned, destroyed it, Jones brought it back, Jack captained it, then he was mutineered on, Barbossa captains it, Jack kills Barbossa, Jack once again is captain of the Black Pearl, Kraken destroys it, they bring back the Pearl and Jack, then once again at the end Jack looses the Pearl to Barbossa. So currently it is now under the control of Barbossa.

But I think that it should be Barbossa, he is a good captain. Maybe both Jack and Barbossa could be captains at the same time! That is always a laugh.

Its written down in a couple books about Jack before the events of the three films. They're written for juvenile readers and are approved by Disney.

The Captain is the one that owns the ship, and right now, Barbossa has the Black Pearl, meaning he's the captain and owns the ship. Jack is after the Black Pearl (again).
