When Torchwood airs on BBCA, will you watch it or not?
Of course, I'm fine with the adult content
Maybe, so long as they alter it somewhat
No, I don't like how it looks
Anything with Doctor Who is good enough for me! (poll whore option)

I watch it , but my 11 years olds wont watch the sexual episodes. Everything else is fine. Is it just me or did Jack lose his quirky charming flirty ways he seemed to have on DW. he just seems like a totaly different character.

The thing is, he's so much more adult on Torchwood with his character. There's always that sexual innuendo and such, and it's obviously setting itself up as an adult show. So yeah, I think the Jack on TW and the Jack on DW are almost two different people. He keeps the innuendo and adult jokes out of his character in Doctor Who, and the flirting is a minimum..

I'm still immature enough to turn bright red and go jittery if anyone so much as mentions sex in a conversation.

But I can handle Torchwood just fine, thank you. Though maybe it's not for more tender consciences. Like Mary Whitehouse. Then again, she'd probably have a fit at Doctor Who, let alone Torchwood.

It's already been mentioned by some that it's aired in the UK after the Watershed, being 21:00. Apart from the first episode I think they initially showed it at 22:00-23:00 (because I was always super-tired afterwards!) so by those standards most children, on a Sunday night, before SCHOOL should be in bed. And if they're not? That's the parents' decision (or poor parenting.)

It's a show aimed at adults... as if the timing weren't clear enough... and as such they're finally allowed to include adult themes. Explicitly. The plots for Doctor Who are brilliant, fantastic, super, IWANTTOBETHENEXTWRITEROFAFUTURESERIES, but Torchwood can candidly deal with things that are, in all honesty, more realistic. The world's a pretty screwed up place (Countrycide) - it doesn't shy away from that. And the plots for Torchwood are great too - as confusing and befuddling as real life, often enough (you fancy her but you're flirting with him and her and she's got a husband and NOW you're kissing the guy you stole the name of and she's been seducted by her and gosh LIBIDO PEOPLE.)

My nine-year-old sister and my parents watched the first ten minutes of the first episode and went off to bed. They decided they didn't like it.

So the writers have made something for us that's more adult, but there's also the Sarah Jane Adventures for little people now, and I don't see anyone complaining about that being too childish. I love it. So I'd throw in some Freudian psychobabble... because what's really wrong with being explicit, unless you MAKE something wrong with it? ;3

Post watershed is 9pm, right? That's when they air it on SciFi in the US, too.

Although, it's a Saturday night, but they cut and edit it so that the F-bomb isn't heard and the more explicit scenes are toned down a little....the first two episodes and then the Capt. Jack Harkness one are the few that you've really gotta make sure little kids don't see.

Countrycide was really scary for me, before that Blink had been one of the freakiest things I had ever watched (never watches scary movies, ever) and then Torchwood started blowing it out of the water. We have it here in Canada! I ignored if for a long time because it wasn't really Doctor Who, but it is advertised on CBC at pretty much every commercial break during DW, and once I started watching it I've started enjoying it for what it is. I, being 14, am just old enough to watch, and before watching Torchwood I never realized how tame DW is. My little bro is 11, so no Torchwood for him, and luckily he doesn't really want to watch either. I don't know if they are editing the Canadian version to make it more 14-A or not, does anyone know?

Countrycide was pretty freaky, but Blink was better. Doctor Who is amazing, but Torchwood is clearly not on the same level in terms of viewing ages.

I don't know if the Canadian version will be edited, but I know the US version just has the f-word bleeped out, and probably a random commercial cut here and there, but that's about it.

I like Torchwood, it's growing on me. I know its darker, ALOT darker, than DW, and I'm fine with that. Eventhough it's a spin off, I never expected it to be like DW. Doctor Who has always been a little more idealistic, with a protaganist who actively tries to take the moral highground on things. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing. That the formula - it works well and I love it. Torchwood is darker and grittier, and I think it gives the writers a chance to do story lines that would never see the light of day on DW. It also doesn't have to be pasterized down to a kid-friendly level, and I like that (it goes through enough of that process for an American audience.

uhh.. why not the captain jack harkness one? In my opinion that was one of the least sex/gore/swearing filled ones there is...though I suppose the only part that REALLY sticks in my mind of that one is the Jack/Jack kiss... Mainly due to obsessive youtube watchings.... but as far as I can remember that ones TAME!
lol.
borderline Doctor who standards that one...

Okay, I've probably over-reacted but I know for a fact that my friends would not want their little siblings watching that episode....and my dad doesn't let my younger sister watch Torchwood at all. ..it's a bit much for some people with the Jack/Jack kiss... sweatdrop

You have to remember that sometimes younger kids will blatantly disobey their parents and watch things they're not supposed to, god knows I did. When that happens it is important to make sure that anything they're confused about or curious about gets put into the proper context and that they are informed as to why something is or is not the status quo. To try and sheild younger audiences from anything that could possibly hurt them is repressive for the youngin' and fruitless for the guardian.

That being said, I love Torchwood! I can't afford premium cable so I don't watch it on BBCA but I know that they do cut it up a bit, both for content and to insert commercials in the episode. I've been watching it on youtube until the dvd boxes come out and then I buy those. I love Jack and Ianto's relentless flirting and cheered when they finally got a good snog fest on. I honestly think that Owen uses sex to distract him from his personal problems (poor Owen by the way. If you haven't seen it, don't ask). I would love for Toshiko to get somewhere with someone who doesn't die at the end of the episode. Its both facinating and sad to watch Gwen try and juggle her natural "I care" mentality with the compartively cold Torchwood "There are some people who can't be saved" mentality. And I love how it illustrates that human nature can be just as insanely scary as any alien.

Wow... last reply was a month ago. Oh well, here goes:

Let's see... I started Torchwood a bit after the first season ended, I think. (woo Youtube)
I heard it was more mature, but I didn't expect it to be that much worse than DW...
Oh gosh ep2 surprised me; trying to talk about it to a non-watcher would make me feel so awkward xD;;
Anyway, I quickly got over the more mature aspect and have been rather enjoying it.
DW will still be my obsession, but I think I rather like Torchwood too...

My family either doesn't mention gay/lesbian stuff or really doesn't mind, so I've never had much of a problem with it either.
I suppose the first couple scenes I saw were a bit awkward for me, but it doesn't bug me too much on the whole.

Near when season 2 came out my dad started watching it for some reason - still not quite sure why...
(I certainly didn't mention it)
He actually likes it too; I dunno how compared to new Who, b/c he doesn't really watch that...

Anyway, I would say definitely not for the kiddies: SJA is more for them.
I think I would let my little sister watch if she actually wanted to - she's 15 and could probably handle it. (I'm 17 now)

Oh, and does anyone know how edited Season 2 was in the US?
Because I watched that on BBCA instead of Youtube because of relatively close US/UK airdates...

Yeah.. I saw it on both, primarily because I wanted to know the best times to leave the room. rofl

Okay, I've found that all BBCA does is bleep out the more offensive words (not too many in Series 2, actually) and they don't actually cut for content. They cut for time, which means little bits here and there are lost. I suppose they aren't relevant to the storyline as much, or you can figure out what happened, but all BBCA does is make sure it fits in the timeslot it's given. rolleyes

User ImageYou must be mad...
Did they cut Torchwood for America and try to clean it up a bit? CAN it be celaned up? The sexuality is so integrated into the show, I think that some episodes would be missing something if it was cut out...
...or you wouldn't have come here.User Image
