uhm s**t like that happens all the time. your a percussionist. ohwell. learn to take better care of your sticks.

I've broken at least three or four pairs of drumsticks, you know while rocking out on my drumkit, good times...

i've only broken 2 pairs (but they were my own.. not the schools).. but i did, however, get in trouble for losing a bass mallet on the football field. (the drum was falling off because a. our harnesses are crappy and b. we had put new foam on 45 minutes earlier and it just wasn't working for me [i swear that those stupid harnesses are made for guys but idk.. i'm the only girl who plays bass] and yah.. i was focusing on trying not to drop the drum while trying to play and then whoosh.. the stick flies out of my hand somewhere.) but yah.. i rarely break sticks/mallets.. normally, i just get really into playing and my stick will fly out of my hand and almost hit someone (or will actually hit me) in the face.. like last year, during pep band we were playing oye como va and i hit myself on the nose while playing my solo (and that gave me a very nice nosebleed)

uh mar uh
our drumline does it on purpose at the last football game...heh. We didn't have a pit last year but now we do...its quite small.

Ours does too! It is really funny, and we all cheer. It is like a competition. Part 1: See who can kill both their sticks quickest; Part 2: See whose flies farthest(I think one hit a cheerleader last year, or almost.) Our pit is big though. I think we might have doubled parts.

By the way, i love your sigXD We are doing a copland show this year. The back of our shirts has a cool quote by him:
To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable
I like that quoteXD

I almost forgot! At the last game we went to(2 weeks ago) one of our bass drummers broke his stick on the head of the drum. We all were suprised. In our band, sticks usually die via rim shots. And at the same game, we clarinets were standing right behind the drums in the stands, as in; striking distance. Yeah, small stands>.> Luckily, I was in between two bass drummers so I was in safety zone, but we had some people who got their clarinets hit by sticks. It was funny seeing his face when his stick broke though.

Something along the lines of 0.o

in my opinion, your not a real drummer unless you break several sticks over the years. the first mallet i broke was during an indoor show and it almost hit one of the parents. then i broke a mallet during a MB practice and the other one three days later. so far ive got 4 bass mallets and two quint sticks. and no one really cares

I was in percussion for one marching season because I injured my knee and couldn't march for guard. So, I used to break sticks up and down because I didn't exactly know how to use them. But that's nothing. My boyfriend who's been in percussion for like ever, has broken a Gong every year. He keeps peices of them too. Now we're both seniors and out percussion instructor is going to buy him a gong for him to break at Finals. XD It made him happy.

lol in my band its kind of encouraged. I mean my director hates buying new sticks all the time but the pit instructor high-fives us. its kind of like a reward for playing the loudly. Once when I broke a mallot the head went flying and nearly beamed my director in the head. I couldn't finish the run-through i was laughing so hard!

I have done that too. I have never gotten in trouble because the sticks are not meant to be used forever. They will break. There is no way around it

it's a tradition in our drum line to break our sticks after band camp and after the last show of our season. Only I took it a little to far a put my sticks threw my drum head.

ugh, there is this one percussion guy, he has broken twenty-eight sticks

the guys in our drumline wear out their sticks with all the rim shots they do. they get new sticks every couple of weeks or so. haha the mallets on the other hand don't break as often, they just get real nasty at the bottom from playing with 4 mallets and them rubbing together sometimes.

In the snare line, we take great pride in the sticks we manage to break...it's a thing. We all save the broken pieces til the end of the season, then compare. Whoever has managed to salvage the most shards gets them taped up under the band room clock until the end of the next season...One time some substitute band director saw them during the off season and tried to take them off. The s**t hit the fan that day...

For us, our worst was when we were at Band Camp. I played Percussion for two years, the first because I was asked to (instead of flute. Best decision EVAR). I played cymbals, because our old cymbal player bailed. Well, I was practicing, and all of a sudden something hit me in the gut. When I looked down, I saw I had broken off a large chunk of the cymbals. Nervous, I looked to our drumming instructor, Mr. Lane (who is BAD a**). He laughed and said "Congratulations. You're officially a part of percussion." XD I was only trying to make them proud of me, and I broke it again ten minutes later. To this day, they rattle and sound awful... T crying T

Another thing was during a jazz band festival. It was judging time, and Brenden, our drummer, started. The tom fell over, and he freaked, trying to hold it up with one foot, and Ivory slid across the floor and held it up. They fixed it in between songs, but then the vibrophone pedal (which I was using) broke off, and I spent half a song repairing it. I've become really adept at repairing instruments, lollc

It just depends on HOW you broke it at my school. If the stick broke from wear, it's ok. But we've had some jokers who have used their sticks for other uses like playing cricket and play toys. Not in a sexual way as I know of.
