That...that's just super.

Aren't magickal names supposedly a powerful thing? In which case I'm not actually sure why anyone would post theirs. Defeats the purpose of having the extra name, to my mind.

As I said, pretentious. Naming yourself after a goddess is pretty bad too. Sorry, but just because I worship Yama, that doesn't mean I'm going to go around and call myself Yama. Besides, naming yourself after a god implies that you want to take on traits of that god. I don't think many people called Artemis go around with a bow and shoot people for looking at them funny. I'm sure they aren't all perfectly chaste either.

I always think of it a bit like Conan, oddly enough; beware of calling a god's attention to you, as the attention may not be the good kind. Not to mention, if you're just using the name because it sounds cool, it's more or less like informing the namesake that you feel you're at least as powerful as them...

But what if you are though? At least, say theoretically.

Well Josh, I understand that your power is beyond the understanding of mortal men, but I meant for the rest of us.

Besides, if you *are* as powerful...isn't it kinda lame to take on some weak-a** pansy god's name? Wouldn't you be better off having your own name, amassing worshippers? I'm just saying, is all.

I knew there was a reason I liked you so much.

Some people take on a name of a deity in reverence. There are examples of this in mythos itself. Like Pallas-Athena, which Athena starting to use after her friend Pallas met an unfortunate end.

I have kinda decided on a magical name recently, after my vision.
Blind Lapis. After the eye I saw. It doesn't sound too pretentious does it?

Don't worry about it. It's much worse to be pretentious than to sound pretentious, and you aren't pretentious. Sounds cool, too.

*smiles* Thanks.
Do you know if sapphire is darker than lapis lazuli? I'm trying to figure out the "darkest" blue gem there is.

Natural blue sapphire is actually really really dark. Almost black, actually. It gets its bluer color through heat treatments. I have some uncut sapphire lying around and its uber dark.

But she took Pallas name because she killed Pallas and felt guilty over the death. Unless I'm mistaken, Artemis isn't dead. If you want to revere Artemis, why not call yourself Follower of Artemis? That pays homage to the deity and is a lot less fluffy.

You do have a point there. I'm not trying to defend people calling themselves by such names, kind of the Ashleys of the magical world. They just pick what sounds cool to them, often doing very little research. If someone chooses a name after a lot of thought and some good research on its meaning and attributes, I have no problems with them using it, because they know how to.

Honestly, I don't think the True Name is something that can be spoken. It's a resonance. Your part in the celestial chorus. You sing it with your whole being, and people can control you if they learn how to affect your resonance. All of this is fluffy-fru-fru pillow talk for your personality.

Personally, my given name has never, ever fit me and I didn't feel I'd be dishonoring my parents by doing so, I would have it legally changed. I've always had other names for myself and when I discovered Neopaganism, I can't say I adopted any new ones specifically for magical practice. I've made a few more aliases for the Pagan forums I participate in, but that's about it.

my given name never fit me either. a friend gave me the nickname of "Dragon" a couple years before my awakening(she said i looked liek a dragon, and the fact that i always wore dragon shirts made it seem even more suitable). I still consider that name to be suitable more than "Jesse", especially seeing as Jesse is a biblical name, and I hate the bible and all that has come from it. Dragon works, seeing as I'm dragonkin, and I prefer friends to address me as Dragon, though I will allow others to address me as Dragon as well. Personally, "Your highness" would work better(i'm joking, but alluding to the fact that i'm a chieftain/king of a small valley and mountain range on the astral plane).

I've never felt like my given name fits me, either. Even the nickname that most people call me was given to me by my parents, and is still completely...wrong. But strangely enough, I can't think of a better suited name. I've got a thousand names that friends of mine use (most of them are male names, which I find quite entertaining), but while they fit better, they're still not a good fit. I've gotten used to people calling me "dras" on the internet, but that's hardly a name. Plus, it would be...odd with my strongly German last name. And would be difficult to say with a stuffed up nose, which I have quite often.

On a side note, I could have sworn I replied to this topic already. Though it was probably just one of those times where I type out some huge-a** response, then get distracted, forget what I'm doing, and end up deleting it all. Oh well.
