On the mousetrap subject... when my parents had mouse problems, my dad made a makeshift trap that worked well for both mice and rats, and didn't kill or hurt them. He would get a garbage can and place a board extending over the can, enough so that if a mouse stood on the end of the board, it would dump them into the can, and they couldn't climb out. Then he'd just put some bread and peanut butter on the end of the board. Come back in a day or so, and you've got a mouse. (He came up with this after he had tried a glue trap, and we were all pretty squicked out by it. This method is preferable and worked better for us too.)

Hey you should try to get your hands on Tansy Flower. It repels mice and insects. Maybe try using that to keep them away from your home. Also it's a good tip to put tansy flower in your cats bed, to keep away mites, ticks and flees. I just heard about this from a herb lady. But im not sure if it actually works because i have not tried it. But it's a worth a shot. You said you lived near a forest, it just might grow there!! Maybe do a little search on it so you know what it looks like..... Anyway i hope it helps blaugh

I believe that you should either let your cat catch it (on its own! Don't force him to) or have one of those live traps. Yes, I too believe that the mouse diserves to live but i can't stop my cat from killing them. They bring it as a gift to me sometimes and i get mad but not really at them just at the fact that i have a poor innocent mouse dead at my feet. I agree with both the people in the 'argument' yes i like personafying my animals because they are alot more intellgent then some people..they just communicate differently. Yes, we shouldn't stop them from their animals instincts but i try to prevent them to just because i hate seeing something die. It isn't really an opinion i have i'm just very emotional to things that harm animals. I have many cats and each one of them are hunters outside in the summer. All come baring gifts and everytime i get mad but i thank them for the gift and then barry the poor creature. If i see them attacking something, squirell, bird, bat, rabbit, i try and stop them because if i had a 'friend' that was a mouse or a rabbit i wouldn't want to watch them die...my cat killed a baby rabbit. crying I don't know if people have these opinions on cats because alot of people don't like mice but i do, so i'm very sensitve when i see one suffering. You are both right....animals don't know what torture is but we do...and because of that....i see animals (when throwing the animal in the air) as torturing another. It is just how i was raised and i'm very sorry if you feel differently. We all have are opinions and that is good. The point is, I believe you should try to prevent the mouse's death if possible. That poor creature disserves to live as much as the next creatures. Just make sure if you do sick your cat on it that the mouse doesnt' have some disease..which is another reason i'm always afraid to have my cats kill stuff.

You know, I kind of agree with you there 3nodding . I don't like my cats really bringing in dead birds or mice but you can't do anything about it. Its just instinct. But I probably wouldn't want my cats killing mice or rats because what if the mice had some sort of sickness? It isn't the cats fault if they kill an animal. Like you said its just instinct. Hmm.. instead of my cat killing the rats/mice I should just try the mouse traps. Alot of people who are saying "let the mice live" whats the point? They are just going to come back, get into the piping all over again. We live near a forest so that would be a big problem.

I never had problems with mice coming back into the buildings once I removed them. The trick is to block their holes once you've caught and released them. Mice don't have a particularly good 'homing' instinct as such so I doubt the released individuals would come back- however, what will happen is that new mice will move in to take their place, whether you kill them or trap/release. Stands to reason; critters are constantly dispersing and moving into new territory, so when they find a prime location that has food, shelter, perfect living requirements for mice, but no mice, they'll shift straight in.
Get rid of what you have then get rid of the things that makes it such an attractive place for mice. 3nodding

We have covered the holes but they either make another hole or go threw our piping or whatever deals with that. It is just annoying. I don't see anything that makes them want to come in though. It is very weird.

Hello there. It seems you have some very smart mice sharing your home. biggrin I wonder what drives them into your house? Does your neighbour have this problem too? Maybe you should check the state of your house. The mice might probably have come in because you have a not very clean place or something like that (eg. food that aren't covered properly, cabinets left open, dirty carpets [the smell]... etc). No offense... sweatdrop

We had mice AND 'rats' in our home before. It was dreadful really. And we don't have cats around the house either. The weird thing was that even when we set up traps, they somehow manage to avoid them!! Even with food!!! They really are smart... Then we realized that the state of our house was... you know. After we had a BIG family cleaning (the house rofl ), the mice & rats disappeared. They came from the drains mostly... I think there still are some that are living in the roof. eek I still hear scratching noises but not more than that. Hopefully this inane rambling helps. xp
