Thats... a good question.. maybe he died.. but if he died don't you think they would be a little, hey is kagomes grampa, Kagomes moms dad or her fathers dad.. If its her fathers dad then something bad happend too him..

I've always wondered about that as well. So her mom's name is acutally Kia??. I heard someone say that. I didn't really know that. I never even heard them say her name before and every site you see, just calls her Kagome's mom.
I think he died. That's just my two cents.

if you pay attention,
in the episode with Kikyou and Inuyasha, It was on recently.
It was about Kikyou and her story. before kagome purifies kikyou (very recent ep.)
Well at the end of the second part of the sencond episode.
it shows kagome being born,
but her grandpa is there,after kagome is born, and her dad isnt.
Maybe he did die. i mean if they left them,i think it would of been after kagome was born.
But wait in the 1st movie they show kagome and shota younge. and their dad is there as well as their grandpa and mother.
hmm..

I think he must have died, because if he'd divorced her or left her, kagome's mom wouldnt have blushed when talking about how he proposed... she wouldnt have wanted to talk about it at all, more than likely
