Lady Mira of Azure Sky *sighs*I wish I were in Japan right now. But I don't see myself as ever being able to go there unless I get a job that offers a break at some point. I'm trying to be a marine biologist so maybe I'll get a business trip but it's highly unlikely. My step dad is a marine biologist and he's never left this city much less country. But he works for the government so maybe they are worse about it. On a side note, I think it is a bit much to say all of them are fat and can't get a girlfriend in their own country. I don't seem to have any problem, and I'm not overweight, but I am not under either.... then again, I'm no sex God, I just seem to get lucky at being in the right place at the right time often. I know you didn't mean everyone, I just don't see me fitting into that. But you never know, maybe I am geekier then I thought o_o; and we all know I am an a*****e ~.~ But, I don't lie about it, I tell my girlfriends right up front that I am an a*****e n_~ lol. Though, they never seem to agree with me until they cheat on me and then use that as an excuse ~.~; Anyway, I seem to be just using this as a reason to b***h about my girl troubles, so I'ma go shower or something. Maybe I will take a nap since I have to work tomorrow.

Reko The one thing I find a bit annoying and a little depressing is how most people think that they have to speak english to me. I understand Japanese very well, I do have a little more trouble speaking... but it really gets to me when people try to speak English when they can't at all or when they talk to my friend (who looks Japanese) and try to ask questions through him. I swear I almost hugged this saleswoman who came to my door once because she just spoke in Japanese to me instead of just assuming I wouldn't understand. She went away though because whatever she was selling or giving out had way too much kanji and I told her I couldn't read much. sweatdrop OH my GOD I KNOW! I KNOW! I HATE THAT! xp stressed To no end... Sheesh when I came back and I was waiting for the Narita Express, I just leaned over asking the time and the guy responds in English: "Fuaibu sateiii". And I am just like.. Thanks. stare My most.. memorable incident with English/Japanese conversation was when I was visiting a horse stable. I was just walking around reading the horse's names on their stalls, and I stopped to visit the horse I had just ridden. A kindly woman came up to me after she saw me admiring her horse. It was an American paint horse, so I guess there was some conotation there for her to speak English... but I automatically responded to her in Japanese! We had a lengthy conversation about horses with HER speaking English the whole time and ME speaking Japanese! It seemed quite hilarious to me but no one around us nor the woman I was speaking with seemed to think it was strange that I was responding in her own language. I guess she doesn't get a lot of chances to practice English? That could be one non-annoying reason....? surprised

It depends... some people I don't feel so bad because they say they are studying English and really want to practice... so I end up speaking to them in English. I remember once in my shodo class the girls asked me when my birthday was and I was starting to reply in Japanese when they said "No, no! In English!" sweatdrop It's like.. great, I'm in Japan and I want to practice my Japanese, but it really seems that I speak more of it in my class back home than I do here. Although my Japanese lessons here seem a bit better because they are one on one and I can go at my own pace... and I have (or had, schedule change after break is over) about eight Japanese lessons a week. Four different teachers; one to teach me kanji, one was supposed to teach me writing (but I already knew how so we are translating Howl's Moving Castle into English), another teaches me conversational Japanese, and one... he just teaches me out of this retarded Japanese for Young People textbook. It may work for some people... but it just doesn't help me at all. I like to know why you use certain things and I don't like just memorizing the stuff they put in there... *coughs* Anyway... a little off the subject, there.
The ALT at my school (who also doubles as my counselor) had someone pull up next to her to ask for directions, but they didn't see that she was foreign (umbrella, she isn't really tall, you get the picture) and when she kinda lifted her umbrella and was about to give directions they just took off. sweatdrop And once, at a party-type thing that was held here at my current host mother's house, one of my host mother's friends was asking one of the other ALTs things about my counselor when she was sitting right there... the other ALT had to tell her that my counselor understood Japanese just fine and could answer for herself. Poor woman. sweatdrop

I should be going next summer. I think I'll probably be in either Sapporo, Tokyo, or Aichi, although I've never heard of Aichi. I'll have to look it up. Wherever they send me, they're supposed to give us like a couple weeks off towards the end, and I plan on going to Osaka to pick up on some kansai-ben. xd

Where Nagoya is. I'm applying for JET this fall, so if I get in, I'll be going next summer too. I hope I make it!

I was in Japan *sob* was. Two different times, but only for two weeks at a time. So it wasn't a long time but it was sooo much fun. I've also worked alot with Japanese exchange students, but now i'm too old >.<
As for gaijin guys, most of my classmates were pretty kewl in my highschool class. there was one guy in my college class two semesters ago who was a bit of a know-it-all, but that was about it.
As for going again, I plan to go next spring break, just me my boy and a friend or two are gonna try and save up our own money..... yeah, good luck to us. lol.
(grr, my first trip i hung out with a cute japanese guy but i had a bf at the time, stupid bf. lol)
i would love to do JET too. someone said it's bachelors??? I thought it was only AA degree, unless maybe I was thinking of another program??

I'm not in Japan, but I really want to go. Maybe with a summer homestay or something. For those who want to do JET, from what I've heard, don't make plans for placement in Tokyo. Since it's about the "internationalization of Japan." Godon I would like to keep in touch with at least one person that lives there. I wonder, should I buy my laptop and digital camera when I get there or before I leave? That shouldn't be too much of a problem dependind on placement, they might have a prefecture based club for JET people where you're placed.

Yes, Aichi is a prefecture and is where Nagoya is located. ^_^ It's actually where I am right now. *grin* I'm in the computer lab at Aichi Kenritsu Daigaku (Aichi Prefectural University). The school is located right across from where EXPO 2005 Aichi is being held. Hehe. We might be going sometime, too, which'll be cool.
I like Nagoya. I just don't like taking the train to and from school. x_x Sooooo many people packed into the cars. Gah.

RubyJewelStone For those who want to do JET, from what I've heard, don't make plans for placement in Tokyo. Since it's about the "internationalization of Japan." Yeah, they have stats somewhere on the page, and during 2003-2004, out of over 6,000 JETs a whooping 12 were placed in Tokyo (over 200 were in Saitama, though, which is right next to Tokyo). I think if you get chosen to be a JET but request like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, they'll probably tease you and put you in Hokkaido. One guy came in to out class to talk to us about JET, and he said he requested those cities and instead got placed on a tiny island between Shikoku and Okayama. He stayed for 3 years so it couldn't have been all bad. I've heard you're more likely to get one of your choices if you research and put a smaller city on there (and you can always request something that is near a big city biggrin ) I've also heard smaller cities are more likely to help you out with your rent and such (That guy I mentioned before had a fully furnished apartment and free rent, probably why he stayed there for 3 years)
