Tying Loose Ends Somewhere in Jauhar | Collector ----------------------------------------
Maia breathed in deeply, taking in the smell of the morning air in Jauhar. Soon she would be leaving this place, with no clear knowledge if she would even ever return. Not because she never wanted to. But who knew where her path would take her now? How far would she go once she officially made this first step away from her comfort zone that was her own homeland? She knew these forests so well. Had lived in them since she was a tiny child, learning how to read the signs of the forest to find her way around it. How to forage in the hard ground. How to avoid the dangerous creatures. All this experience and knowledge had been valuable to her while she was here. Now she was about to embark on a journey to somewhere else. Somewhere foreign and so different from what she was used to that she worried if she would be able to adapt to it as she had here. That maybe she wasn't cut out to be an adventurer or even a Treasure Hunter. She had felt so confident about herself until now.
Thinking like this wasn't helpful. She could do it. If she could survive for most of her life completely independent, surely she could survive going to a new country.
First, there were some things she had to settle up with before she left.
The first stop was Chiro. This one she was most nervous about. She had been a loyal field worker, working for the older Wind man for many years now. She didn't want to tell him she was leaving so abruptly, but what else was there for her to do? Kieran and Kaimana were leaving again soon. There was no time to do this more professionally, easing slowly into her leaving. It had to be now or risk a bad reputation by simply leaving without saying anything. He might think something had happened to her while she was out and that would be no better than telling a straight lie. That was the last thing she wanted to do. She wanted to make sure he understood how much she appreciated him taking her on as a worker so long ago, when she was fresh out on her own and not sure what to do. But now she had to leave and hopefully continue to advance in her chosen career.
If she expected him to be upset about losing her, she would have been disappointed. He merely expressed how much of a loss she would be to his little business in Neued once she was gone. She'd always been a diligent worker, filling her bag with as many neat things she found in the forest, all things he easily sold off to various collectors or museums. Sometimes she would do a simple task for someone or escort someone unfamiliar with the area to the next village or city. But mostly she had been left to her own. She would miss that sort of freedom, while at the same time also not. It was time for a change and to do something more valuable with her time. To learn more about her field of work than the basics she had been doing.
Next was the small house she had used as a base of operations during the rare times she was in the city. The furniture was easy enough to sell off and any other little treasures she had kept for herself. Some of it she pawned off. Others she gave for free to neighbors or other people who seemed in need of it.
The house was a bit different. Maia didn't have the time to properly go through the entire process of it. What she did was take her deed and gave it back to the city. Keeping it wasn't an option. Continuing to pay for it from Oba or wherever else life might take her was out of the question. Than there was the fact she might not even be back ever to reclaim it. It was better off to be rid of it, severing her last tie to Neued, and Jauhar as a whole.
Or, well...That wasn't entirely true. She still had her father. She hadn't spoken to him for many years. She'd tried to send him letters every now and than, but he never responded. Whether because he didn't care that she had left, that he was angry that she had, or for reasons worse than she wanted her mind to come up with, Maia didn't know. She had never received a letter back, not even from anyone who might have come across the cabin or moved in. No one even returned her letters. So the best reason she could ever come up with was he was angry with her for leaving him all alone out of nowhere. Still, he was her father and she would send him one more letter. Just one more to tell him she was going even further away from him and may never return. She hadn't meant to hurt him. And that guilt would perhaps always keep her from returning to that cabin in the woods and confront him with her feelings. Like before, she would write this one letter and than disappear from his life forever. Maybe it was better this way. She would just waste away in that cabin, alone and trapped in tedious chores. She hoped he would be okay on his own.
And with all that done, the Shifter packed her bag one last time and turner her back on the city that had been her home for many years.
