As Madeline knelt down and fussed over her downed pokemon, Sable took the opportunity to look over at Impulse. "By the way, you've been scanning our opponents, right?" the teen asked, then chuckled as the rotom buzzed in annoyance. "Of course I -bzzt- have!" the ghost countered, taking mock offense to the implied accusation before lightening up their expression with a sheepish chuckle. "But most of the entries are -zzrt- pretty simple, and I didn't want to -zzt- distract you." Sable nodded at her partner's explanation and gave the rotom a cheery grin. "Well, be sure to pipe up if it's something interesting," she said before turning her attention back to the action, since it looked like her opponent was just about done checking her ferroseed over.
"You did a great job out there. Now get some rest, Spike," Madeline said as she recalled the oversized seed pokemon, then tucked the ball back into her coat pocket. She stood, brushing the dirt off her exposed knees and the end of her dress. Even though the battle was going for her, the girl still seemed cheerful and flashed Sable a grin with a laugh. "Heh, at this rate your going to wipe out my team with just one pokemon." Once more digging through her coat pocket, Madeline pulled out another pokeball. "But we won't make it easy for you. Let's go, Kabu!" With a toss, out of the ball popped a small pokemon with a brown shell covering its back. "Kabu!" the small fossil pokemon hissed in what was probably an attempt to be threatening as it reared up, showing its dark underside and two bright red... Eyes? Or were they just spots that looked like eyes?
"Ooh, -zzt- hey! A kabuto!" Impulse called out excitedly, completely unbothered by the attempt at intimidation. "They used to be considered extinct, -bzzt- between efforts to resurrect fossils and recent discoveries -zzrt- that pockets of them managed to survive to present day, they and -zzt- some other fossil pokemon have been starting to become more -bzz- common," the ghost blathered, then called out to Madeline. "Hey, where did you find -bzzrt- yours? I don't see any location -zzzt- data on this pokedex. Or did you have a fossil?""C'mon, we can ask her after the battle," Sable interrupted, both her and the other trainer giggling at the rotom's sudden excitement. Trying to control her chuckles, the teen focused back on the battle and her opponent. "Another power trip, Cobalt!" Sable called out, pointing at the fossil pokemon. "Roo rooki!" the bird pokemon trilled as he dove to strike the kabuto. The fossil pokemon ducked back to the ground, trying to brace itself for the impact, but was knocked away by Cobalt's strike. Yet another pokemon down for the count.

Sable grinned as Cobalt flew back over to her. "You're doing great out there," she cheered, chuckling as the bird pokemon let out several chirps. "Just a bit more to go." Their opponent had just finished recalling the downed kabuto and was fishing another pokeball out of her pocket. "Yikes, that's what I get for wanting to challenge a rookie... Welp, better stick with it to the end." Having found the one she was after, Madeline tossed the ball out in front of her. "C'mon out, Willow! You're up next!" What popped out looked to be a hollow tree stump... With some sort of dark wisp as an inhabitant. "Stay strong and try to spook them!""Phan!" It looked like some sort of ghost pokemon, but since it was also part tree... "Switch it up and give them a peck!""Dee!" Again the rookidee swooped at his opponent, but instead of trying to collide with them he instead pecked mercilessly with his sharp beak. "Phan! Phan! ...Tump..." Although it tried to get in a good scare, the small, fierce bird pokemon was too much for it and the phantump slumped to the ground before being recalled.

While she was still pretty cheery, the string of defeats seemed to take some of the wind out of Madeline's sails as she pointed Willows ball at the downed phantump. "That was a good try, now get some rest," she said as a beam of red light shot out, making contact with the possessed stump and sucking it inside the ball. The girl then grimaced as she pocketed the ball. "Welp, I've just got one pokemon left," she said as she briefly rubbed the back of her neck with her off hand. "But might as well give it a go. C'mon out, Cinder!" Madeline then pulled her last pokeball out of her coat pocket and tossed it up. The ball popped open and out materialized another flying pokemon, this time a small red and grey bird who chirped excitedly. "Fletchling fletch fletchling!" the small bird trilled, which Cobalt immediately seemed to take offense to. "Rooki rook rooki!" the rookidee shot back, and unbidden by their trainers the two birds were already at it.
"O-oh, Cinder use quick attack!" Madeline called out, trying to give her fletchling at least some direction. The two small birds continued to clash in the air, but a sudden strike from the fletchling caused Cobalt to start falling. "Oop, I gotchya!" Sable called out as she hurried out with arms outstretched. Although she stumbled in the process, the teen managed to catch her falling partner before he could hit the ground. "There! You alright, Cobalt?""Rookidee... Rook..." the bird pokemon mumbled as he tried to force himself back up to the air but ultimately slumped in his trainer's hands, exhausted. "That's fine, you did a great job. Rest up, buddy," Sable said as she lightly tapped the rookidee with his pokeball, causing it to suck him inside where he could rest for a while.
Backing up again, Sable chuckled a bit as she clipped Cobalt's ball back onto her belt. "Heh, guess your ferrothorn wore him out more than I'd thought," the teen suggested, causing Madeline to give a sheepish chuckle of her own. "Oh, I guess so. If I'd realized that I'd have brought out Cinder much sooner," she replied, her fletchling giving an earnest "Fletch!" of agreement. The two laughed a bit before Sable unclipped Proto's ball from her belt. "Well, good thing Cobalt isn't my only partner here. Let's go, Proto!" With a toss, the ball popped open to let out the robotic rabbit that had been contained within. "Ready? Strike with quick attack!""You too Cinder! Quick attack!" the two trainers called out, each pointing at the other's pokemon. Faster than the two could blink their pokemon struck, the fletchling diving down while the cybun hopping up. But in the end, Proto landed safely while Cinder ended up hitting the dirt.

Her last pokemon beaten, Madeline recalled her fletchling with a short sigh of disappointment. "And that's six," she stated simply before chuckling and giving Sable a friendly smile. "Looks like you win." The teen started the rummaging through the bag slung over her shoulder, then frowned. "Uh oh, looks like I'm out of revives... And repels... Guess I should have stocked up back in town..." she muttered, causing Sable to frown. The red-haired teen then approached the other trainer. "Hey, I can head back to the pokemon center with you if you'd like," she offered, then gave Madeline a sheepish chuckle. "I have to go back there to get Cobalt healed up anyway, so there's no harm in us going together." The other trainer looked a bit surprised for a moment before flashing Sable a cheery grin. "Really? Thanks!" she replied happily, then explained "Some of the wild pokemon here like rookidee can get really aggressive, so if your pokemon all faint and you don't have any repels it can get pretty dangerous." Sable nodded as the two carefully picked their way through the grassy route to make their way back into Wedgehurst.

As the two trainers walked back to town some sudden barking caught their attention. "Like that one..." Madeline said with a slight chuckle as a small black and white pokemon suddenly burst out of the tall grass nearby. "Zig! Zigzagooooon!" the pokemon barked, pacing excitedly in front of Sable and Madeline. Occasionally it would stop and crouch down like it was getting ready to charge, its short tail wagging. "Huh, looks like a... Zigzagoon?" Sable asked, although the coloration and design made her doubt her own judgement a bit. "Yup, that's what -zzt- zigzagoon look like here apparently," Impulse assured the teen, floating over to give her a good view of the pokedex entry showing a regular zigzagoon and this black and white one side by side. "It's thought that the Galarian variant is -zzrt- the original version of zigzagoon, and that the ones that -bzzt- are more common in other regions are descended from them." As the zigzagoon barked at the group yet again, this time specifically at Impulse, the rotom let out a sigh through the pokedex's speakers. "Although, -zzt- part of that assumption is because Galarian zigzagoon are more -bzzz- aggressive and 'wild' than the variant initially discovered in -zzrt- Hoenn." The odd zigzagoon let out another excited "Zag!" as the pokemon once again hunched over.
Sable chuckled as it seemed the pokemon wasn't going to let them pass without giving it a fight. "Alright, if you're itching for a fight then I'll give you one. Let's go, Proto!" Once again the teen let out her cybun, and for a moment the robotic bunny watched the zigzagoon with a tilted head. "Give it a solid quick attack," the teen commanded, and faster than she could blink the artificial pokemon disappeared from where it was sitting to suddenly slam into the fuzzy pokemon. It was ready though, and met the cybun's strike with a slam of its own. "Zig! Zagoooon!" the pokemon barked happily, apprently hyped up by how tough its opponent was. "Heh, seems you're enjoying this," Sable commented with a chuckle, eliciting another giggle from Madeline. "You know, zigzagoon are really handy for newer trainers," the other trainer mentioned. "When they aren't battling, they're usually roaming around a lot so they'll pick up all sorts of things that are really useful.""Hm... Well you -zzt- did mention that you wanted to raise some other -bzzt- types of pokemon, Sable," Impulse added, and Sable nodded in response.
"Alright then, let's see about adding zigzagoon to the team!" the teen said excitedly as she pulled an empty pokeball out of her belt. Her first toss was a bit too strong though and ended up overshooting the small pokemon entirely. "Zig?" The pokemon saw the ball sail over its head and for a moment looked at the trainer questioningly. "Uh... Whoops. Let's try that again," the teen said as she pulled out another empty pokeball. Another toss, but this time the fault was that of the zigzagoon itself, who inadvertantly dodged the ball as it charged towards Proto. Without any orders from its trainer, the cybun stayed where it was allowing the wild pokemon a chance to get a clean hit. "S-sorry about that, Proto! I'll get him for sure this time!" As Sable dug out another ball, the zigzagoon reared back onto his hind legs to try and get a better look at what the human was up to... Or maybe to make himself a bigger target for her? "Zig! Zigzag!" Either way, its tail was definitely still wagging as a third ball sailed his direction, this time hitting the pokemon squarely in the forehead. After the pokemon was sucked inside, the ball didn't even shake once before clicking shut.

Grinning, Sable went over and picked up the pokeball that contained her new partner. "Alright, another new teammate!" the teen cheered, then let the zigzagoon out of his new ball. "Let's get you healed up. You too Proto, come over here so I can get you patched up." As she spoke, Sable knelt and pulled a few potions out of her bag. The zigzagoon sniffed at one of the bottles curiously as the teen first set about spraying the scratches on the robotic bunny. Proto stayed stock still as it recieved treatment, only moving to tilt its head up when Sable rubbed the top of its head. "Alright, all done Proto. Your turn, little guy," she said, and with an excited "Zig!" the fuzzy pokemon hurried over. "Sorry little guy, this is gonna sting a bit," she warned the pokemon, then started carefully spraying his injury. "Zi!" The pokemon flinched when initially sprayed, but mostly stayed still enough for his new trainer to finish healing him. "...And done. Now, what to call you..." Sable mumbled as she thought. "A mineral name won't really fit... I guess I could go with a card-based name... How about Jack?""Zig! Zigoon!" the pokemon started barking excitedly at the suggested name. "Haha, alright then. Jack it is!" the teen declared as scratched the zigzagoon behind his ears.

With her pokemon as healed as she could get them with what she had, Sable stood and recalled her cybun. She decided to leave Jack out for the moment though, give the zigzagoon an opportunity to burn off some of his excess energy. As she clipped the dark type's ball onto her belt, Sable grinned at Madeline. "Sorry about that, it should be alright to keep going now," she told the other trainer, who giggled a bit. "No worries," she assured Sable as the two got moving again. It wasn't much further to the town, but there were still plenty of patches of grass to pass through. Occasionally there was some heavy rustling near the trainers, but when that happened Jack would rush over and whatever was nearby would run off.
It wasn't long before the trainers reached Wedgehusrt. "Stay close, Jack," Sable said as they made their way along the path to the pokemon center. The zigzagoon did wander off a bit to sniff at some of the people and objects around, but mostly did as the teen asked and kept close to his new trainer. "So, Sable," Madeline started as the two walked. "Once we get our teams healed, are you planning on doing more training here?""Hm..." the redhead hummed in thought, rubbing the back of her neck. "Maybe a bit more? To work with Proto a bit more and get Jack used to me?" Another thoughtful hum. "But I'll probably catch a train to the Wild Area and catch a few more pokemon soon to round out my team...""Really?" Madeline questioned, tilting her head slightly. "Wait, so you don't have a full team yet?" Sable chuckled sheepishly at the accusation. "Eheheh... Uh, nope, not yet anyway. You've, uh, actually seen all the pokemon I have right now," she admitted as the two walked into the pokemon center.
For a moment the two trainers broke off from their conversation to turn their injured pokemon over to the nurse for treatment. As they went to wait for their names to be called, though, Madeline looked through her bag for something. "Here then, this should be helpful for you," she said as she pulled out a lump of hardened sediment that looked ot have bits of some sort of plant-like thing embedded in it. "Your rotom was asking about Kabu earlier, right? Actually, I'd gotten him revived from one of the fossils my big brother sent me," she explained, then held the fossil out towards Sable. "He recently sent me this one as well, but I should probably focus on raising the pokemon I already have before thinking of getting any new partners. Besides, you could probably use the addition more than I could anyway." The teen chuckled a bit as Sable hesitantly accepted the offered fossil. "You'll be able to get it restored at the lab in town. If Professor Magnolia isn't in, then Professor Sonia should be able to help you."
"Madeline? Sable?" the nurse called from the counter. "Your pokemon are ready for you now." The two teens grinned at one another then went up to the counter to get their partners. "Thanks for the fossil, I'll take good care of whatever gets revived from it," Sable assured Madeline as she retrieved her team, letting Jack back out of his ball before clipping them all onto her belt. "Hopefully I'll see you around." Madeline chuckled a bit at that as she tucked her own team into her coat pocket. "I'm guessing you're keen on challenging the League out here, right? If so then we'll definitely be seeing each other sooner or later." She gave another chuckle, then pointed out the shop kiosk next to the nurse's counter. "I'm going to head out and train a bit more myself, but you might want to stop by there and pick up a few items yourself, just in case," the teen suggested, then gave Sable a short wave before heading out of the building.

Before leaving, Sable took Madeline's advice and checked out the shop for anything useful. They offered quite a few items but the teen tried to limit her purchases to the essentials, like curatives and some repels in case things got a little too hectic while traveling. Although, she did opt to buy a few special pokeballs, in case she wanted to make a few specific pokemon comfortable after catching them. Once her purchases were complete, Sable made her way to the exit. "C'mon Jack, let's go," she said, and the zigzagoon followed after her as she left the pokemon center and started to make her way out of town. It was back to Route 2 and the professor's lab beyond for the teen and her team to add a new partner to her collection.

As Sable made her way back along the path another rookidee flew out from the tall grass. Really, it was surprising how common they apparently were out here. "Alright Jack, let's see what you can do," Sable encouraged, then pointed at the bird pokemon. "Start with a tackle!""Zig zig!" Jack barked as he rushed up, zigging and zagging before jumping up and slamming into the wild rookidee... And knocking it away. After giving the zigzagoon a once-over to make sure he really was doing alright after his battle, Sable recalled him and continued on her way towards the professor's lab. Thankfully, the teen and her team were left alone for the rest of the walk over. Cautiously, Sable knocked twice before opening the door. "Hello? Um, it's me again," she announced as she entered. "I'll be right there!" As some yapping approached, it seemed that once again Professor Sonia and her yamper would be the ones assisting Sable. "Oh, hey again! Did you forget something?" the woman asked, to which Sable chuckled sheepishly. "No, no, didn't forget. Um, someone I met earlier gave me this," the teen explained as she pulled out the fossil Madeline had gifted her earlier. "She said that I could get the pokemon in this brought back to life here?" As she spoke, Sable held out the fossil she was talking about.
Professor Sonia smiled as she took the fossil. "Not a problem, I'll have your new pokemon ready for you right away," she said, then turned to head towards a back room. "It'll take a bit, so feel free to look around in the meantime." With that the professor was gone for the moment, leaving Sable and her rotom alone... Mostly. The woman's yamper was still there, mostly sniffing at Sable and expecting pets and ear scritches but also to make sure the trainer didn't get too curious for her own good. "I guess they really like flowers," Sable muttered as she knelt down to rub the electric dog's head, noting there was pretty much a greenhouse right near the entrance. "Either that or -bzz- studying them... Maybe the effects of something on the -zzrt- local plant life?" Impulse offered as an additional explanation, to which Sable hummed. "Maybe... If these wishing star things land out here often, I guess that'd affect the plants a lot. Get embedded in the ground, break down and become part of the soil, the plants absorb the new minerals... Bet some of the plants here can't even be grown in most other regions..." the teen mused as she scratched behind the yamper's ear.
It didn't take long at all for Professor Sonia to return, this time holding a shiny new pokeball. "All done! Turned out your fossil was of a lileep!" she said cheerily as she held the ball out for Sable to take. "Here's your new partner, take good care of her.""Thank you, professor," Sable said as she took the ball, looking at it briefly before clipping it onto her belt. "For both the lileep and all the help." With that the teen turned to leave, Impulse floating close by their trainer. "It was good -zzt- seeing you again, Professor!" And out the door they went, eager to get back to training.

Sable frowned a bit as she made her way back along Route 2 to get back to Wedgehurst. "...Something -bzz- up?" Impulse asked, concerned. Sable was slightly startled, but chuckled. "Oh, I was just wonder what was taking dad so long to get back to me," she admitted, then pulled out her P*DA. "It doesn't even look like he read the message- Oh!" Suddenly, a wild yamper bolted out from the nearby grass, surprising the teen. "...Er..." For a moment Sable glanced at Impulse, who was looking through the entry loaded in the pokedex. "Hm... Well, like the zigzagoon -zzrt- it should still be handy while -bzzt- starting out. At least until -bzz- your aim improves," the ghost said, then gave Sable a grin. "It won't qualify for the -zzrt- challenge, but should still be a good addition.""Okay cool. Would you mind stepping in to battle?" the teen asked, getting a laugh from the rotom. "Don't want to give the others -zzz- a hard time because you've got bad -bzz- aim eh? Sure, haha, -zzrt- hold this." With that the rotom suddenly shot out of the pokedex, leaving their trainer fumbling to keep it from hitting the ground. "Roto ro!" In a flash the electric ghost was right in front of the yamper, startling it.
"Alright, thanks!" Pocketing both devices, Sable then fished out an empty pokeball to toss at the yamper. At least this time the pokemon did most of the work for her, jumping up to try and catch the ball in mid-air. Instead of catching it in the mouth, though, the yamper missed and ended up bonked in the snout by the pokeball before being sucked inside. The ball wobbled a few times, but eventually clicked shut. "Got it!" Sable proclaimed as she went over to pick up the ball. "Rotom!" With a cheer of their own Impulse zipped back into the pokedex. "Now, let's -bzzt- see about getting his info -zzt- set up..." the pokemon muttered from Sable's pocket, now back to possessing the teen's new device.

The ball of her new teammate in hand, Sable held it out with one hand. "C'mon out," she said as the ball popped open, and out popped the small yamper that had just been captured. "Hey there, little guy," Sable greeted as she knelt down, trying to keep a hold of the pokeball as she started to dig through her bag. "Let's get you healed up." The teen soon found what she was looking for and pulled out a potion bottle, looking it over briefly. "Hm... I should stop by the mart in the pokemon center to pick up more..." she muttered before inching it closer to the yamper, chuckling as the small dog pokemon curiously sniffed at the bottle. "Okay, this will sting a little but try to stay still." As she spoke, Sable held out her other hand to hold and pat the electric type before spritzing the injuries. When the yamper whimpered from the sudden stinging sensation the teen gently rubbed the dog with her other hand. "It's okay, it's okay... And done!" she said before eventually straightening up and tucking the empty bottle in her bag. The yamper sniffed at where its injury had been, the only evidence left the chemical scent from the potion. "Now what to call you..." Sable hummed before suggesting "How about Bolt?" The pokemon let out a couple of cheerful barks, wagging his tail as his trainer grinned in response. "Bolt it is, then!"

After recalling the newest addition to her collection, Sable continued on her way to Wedgehurst. Hopefully for the last time in a while. As nice as the town was, the trainer needed to move on soon for tougher areas. While the pokemon here being on the weaker side was helpful for new trainers to get a foothold, it also meant a fresh team would quickly outgrow them. And right now, it was looking like most of the teen's pokemon were hitting that point, with Cobalt able to wipe out most bug and grass types with one attack while Proto took a bit longer but could weather attacks fairly well. Lichen also seemed like she could take a solid hit or two, so another one that could wear opponents down over time. Impulse was another solid battler but... Well technically Sable wasn't supposed to be using them too much, at least not in the gym challenge. About the only one she was concerned about was Bolt, but... He'd get there.
With her attention focused on thinking about her team, Sable barely realized that she'd reached the pokemon center until she almost bumped into the door. "O-oh, guess we're here," she muttered mostly to Impulse, who had gone back to riding in their trainer's coat pocket. "Alright, we just need to- Um..." As she stepped inside, ready to go do a little shopping, the teen noticed a chansey and abra moving about the lobby, going to the various trainers waiting inside. Odder still, the two of them seemed to be wearing... Buneary ear headbands? "Um..." As she made her way further into the lobby, the chansey suddenly approached the teen. "Chansey! Chansey chan chance. Sey?" Although she couldn't understand what it was saying, the pokemon's gesturing made it clear it was asking for some sort of help from Sable.
"Uh... Well -zzt- this is odd..." Impulse said as the rotom and the pokedex it possessed floated out from Sable's pocket. "Seems they've got some -zzrt- sort of island with a bunch of pokemon eggs... And uh looks -bzzt- like a bunch of pokemon got a little too frisky and now there's -zzt- way too many," the poltergeist translated with a chuckle. "Too many for the attendants -bzz- to handle on their own, so they're asking people to send over -zzt- some volunteers to help hatch some of the eggs and rush them along." Sable frowned a bit as she thought. "Oh... Hm... I want to help, but I don't know if I have any pokemon really... Suitable for that..." As Sable deliberated, Impulse sifted through a few menus in the pokedex before floating in front of Sable. "How about Bolt? I know you -bzz- just caught him, but given his line tends towards being herding dogs he -zzz- should be a big help," the rotom suggested. Sable thought a bit, then nodded. "I was hoping to train him a bit, but this might be a better idea. He'd be getting some exercise at the same time I'd bet," the teen agreed.
As the chansey cheered happily and her abra partner suddenly teleported over, Sable unclipped her yamper's pokeball from her belt. "Okay then, c'mon out Bolt," the teen said as she pointed the electric type's pokeball in front of her, and once the pokemon popped out she knelt down and gave the dog some head pats. "I know we just met, but these nice pokemon need some help and you're the best choice, okay?" Bolt sniffed at the chansey and abra briefly before yapping at them, tail wagging cheerfully. It was hard to tell with such a sleepy face, but Sable was pretty sure the abra was smiling as it teleported Bolt away. "Chan sey sey chansey.""She says to not worry, once things -zzrt- get moving again they'll be able to teleport Bolt directly back to us," Impulse translated as the chansey tried to assure the teen.

After giving the chansey and abra a small wave, Sable went over to the market kiosk to purchase a few more supplies. Top of the list was potions, but she also picked out an assortment of pokeballs for the road ahead. Mostly standard ones, but also some nest balls in case she ended up trying to catch a particularly stubborn pokemon this early in her journey. She even got to pick out a couple of complimentary balls for purchasing so many. Rounding out her options was a box of chocolates as a treat for herself and her team... That would be opened later. Probably. If she didn't forget about it.
With her shopping done, it was time for Sable to finally leave these quaint little towns and get on with her journey for real. "Next stop, the train station for a trip to the wild area," she said cheerfully as she walked down the path to the station. "You -zzrt- sure you have everything?" Impulse asked as their trainer paused at a vending machine. "...Hm... Probably not, but we should still be okay." As she spoke, she paid for some drinks. A couple were for the ride, but most of them were to enjoy while exploring the wide area between Wedgehurst and Motostoke. "We'll just have to be careful not to push ourselves too hard. Wouldn't do to need a revive out there." With that... Cheerful? Thought, Sable got a ticket from the counter inside and boarded the train to find a seat.

"Bixby, if ye run yer mouth like that again, I’m throwin’ yew agains’ the wall!" Nicola snapped at the Rotom once they were out of earshot of the laboratory. The Rotom buzzed and jittered.

"Naw." The young man took a deep breath, turning his attention to the new pokeball in hand. There were more important matters to attend to. He pressed the button to expand the size, chucking it to the ground and grinning as a little rabbit formed in the stream of light, kneeling down to it meet the Scorbunny at eye level.
"Hullo there wee one. Nice ta meet’cha!" The Scorbunny blinked and stared, gaze shifting between the unfamiliar face of Nicky and his Bixby. Nicky offered a hand out for it to sniff before gently patting the pokemon between the ears.
"Ye part of our team now! I hope you like a lil’ adventure?" The Scorbunny’s nose twitched some, paw pressing over its mouth. Nicola eyed the little pokemon curiously as introductions played out.
