Fish Out of Water

Mr... Goldfish?

He couldn't help but laugh at the strange comment, the sound low and deep as the young woman moved to collect herself on the step adjacent to his.

"A Fish Out of Water, perhaps."

He glanced around, fully prepared to be interrupted by some other far more distinguished gentleman showing up on the scene (fashionably late, of course) to attend to his clumsy date. She actually looked rather endearing, one hand moving up to toy with the flower in her hair as she fidgeted where she stood.

"And you are more than welcome to invade my space at any time," he added before he could stop himself -- what had gotten into him? The grumpy indifference had fled from his face, replaced with a grin as he watched her actions. There was something about this night, magical that it was, that had him throwing caution to the wind.... a very uncharacteristic trait for him.

"....That is, if your date doesn't mind me sharing your time, of course, Miss...?"

Cabbages

Oh. Oh no. Something about the way he laughed made her flutter again, and her hands twisted in their gloved grasp. Cabbages found that she wanted to make him laugh again, to do something to make him hold her hand again, something or anything to keep his focus on her. This was a dangerous feeling, she told herself, one that was going to get her in trouble.

And yet, it wouldn't go away.

"You seem like you fit in perfectly to me," she offered, curling her hair around a finger. At his invitation, she stared closer, wanting to memorize the way his eyes squinted when he smiled. It made her think of Covey, made her wonder what he would smile like, but she shooed that thought away. Covey wasn't going to smile at her like that, what was the use of pretending? Someone was talking to her here and now, and she wasn't about to squander that because one of her coworkers had impeccable bone structure and a shoulder to waist ratio that made her swoon.

"...Oh, I went stag for the evening," Cabbages laughed, smoothing out the lines of her dress. "Or...whatever girls do when they go stag. I don't have a date, is what I'm saying. People say I'm too peculiar for that." She glanced down at the petals of her gown, smiling distantly.

"You can call me Cabbages," she said, swaying softly to the background music. "On account of the...cabbages."

Fish Out of Water

He was about to comment about her lack of date being an impossibility when she dropped a tell-tale word that had his eyebrows rising.

Peculiar?

Blue eyes gazed at the princess in leaves as realization slowly dawned upon the gentleman. The dark green hair. The light green eyes. The way she'd clumsily nearly taken a stumble onto the stairs.

Could she be...?

"i happen to be very fond of cabbages," he mused softly, trying his best to keep a straight face as he swallowed his secrets, keeping them to himself. It wouldn't do him any good to let the cat out of the bag now, not when they were all stuck under this guise of being... whatever it was they were for this ball of sorts.

The swaying didn't go unnoticed, Fish immediately reflecting on her comment about going stag because she was peculiar.

"So clearly, it must be my lucky evening."

One hand extended itself towards her in offering.

"Perhaps we could go stag together?"

Minny Clover (DM Sadalsuud)

"I will and thank you=" Minny said as she gave the barkeep a bright smile, before drifting away as it didn't seem fair for her to continue hog the 'drinks space'.

Her lips had quirked up in a friendly smile at the auburn-haired woman (
Valkyrie), although Minny had ultimately found herself glancing down at the foyer below for a time as she absently sipped at her soda.

She had been pretty content to spend some time just watching the comings of those below - well at least right up to the point when the sound of someone had politely coughing caught her attention, her eyes shifting to where a girl in a white dress stood at the top of the stairs.

Green eyes blinked startled since she hadn't recalled the other climbing the stairs, but she had had a sweet smile that had had her lips quirking up in an answering one and it seemed - at least from the girl's words - that something was happening down in the foyer.

Minny started towards the stairs and found herself passing a woman with pretty hair (
Heartshocker) that appeared to ombre from icy blue to an electric purple and paused, lips quirking up in a friendly smile "It's really pretty up here isn't it" she said cheerfully.

Cabbages

"Do you?" Cabbages kept her voice even and her expression cool, but inside she was screaming--this boy is talking to me this boy is flirting with me this is the real deal. Still, she was apprehensive when she looked at the outstretched hand, waiting for the other shoe to fall. None of this would be happening if she'd been wearing her normal clothes, acting her normal self, hanging out somewhere that wasn't on some non-earth rock in space. And yet, here she was, considering the offer of a boy who looked to be sincere, his hand outstretched.

Whenever the clock struck twelve, none of this would be real, and Ella would have to stop being Cinderella and go back to her usual lackluster self. But...did that matter, if she could just sit back and enjoy the moment for what it was?

"...I think I like the sound of that," she smiled, reaching forward tentatively. Her heart caught in her throat for just a moment, and then she placed her hand in his. "Do you like to dance?" That's what people did at these sorts of parties, right? They danced? Cabbages didn't know how, but if it was anything like what she'd read about, then a good lead was all she'd need.

Light Wizard and Flower Power

"Well, what do you think there's here to do besides chatting it up?" Flower Power asked, going over to the bartender and requesting some wine for the both of them. Sure, she was underage, but she was 18 already! Her parents wouldn't mind her sipping some wine at least! She just had to make sure that this was her only glass for the evening, and if she lost it, then she wouldn't be getting a refill.

Light Wizard shook his head. "I think there was something about a gallery, but it doesn't seem to be open yet." He said, nodding to her in confirmation of a wanted drink, and waited until she got back with them. He gladly took one and took a light sip, feeling it rush down his throat and heat it up. Why people drank a ton of this he couldn't understand, but it was okay to wash things down a little with. And he would only have one glass also. He did not want to test his limits in an unfamiliar place such as this.

FP was about to answer him when suddenly there was an announcement made, and they wandered over to listen. Apparently the gallery that was promised was now open, and the Foyer would be turning into a dance floor. LW groaned. He was no good at dancing! And he sure as heck didn't want to do it here, especially when he had just gotten a drink! What was he supposed to do with it?!

FP giggled. "If you want to look after our drinks, I can get some food, then we can head to the gallery after that?" She asked, not wanting to participate in the dancing either. She liked the song that was on, but she was not a dancer. LW nodded once again and she headed down the stairs, hoping that she could get a couple of plates before the food tables were too swarmed with people, then she would be waiting forever!

[Flower Power EXIT to Foyer]

The Barkeep

The Barkeep poured the last of his drinks and aligned them neatly on a tray, and then with an easy shuffle he lifted the tray up and to his shoulder, holding an additional glass in hand.

"I have to pass these out, and then I'm done," he said as he passed by Valkyrie, offering her the extra glass. "But then...maybe...um. You know what? If you head downstairs, we should dance. I want to dance with you."

He leaned forward before he could lose his nerve and kissed her lips softly, pulling away only to steady the tray at his shoulder. "Um...right. I should..." He started to turn red under the mask, then turned for the stairs before his knees could start to shake.

He'd kissed Van. He'd kissed her. Was that too much? Too soon? He didn't have time to think about it--one more round of drinks and then he was leaving the table to be open bar.

[Exiting to the Foyer.]

It is 9 PM.

Drinking the champagne, you notice that the flavors seem to shift with each and every sip, sometimes sweet, sometimes dry, but always smooth on the way down. It's the least magical property of the champagne by far--over time, you notice that the wonder seems a little less decrepit and rusty around the edges, and if you squint you can almost imagine where pastel banners would have run from ceiling to floor, emblazoned with six pointed stars.

The decor isn't the the only thing to start to change; around you, you start to notice more of the transparent figures, faded almost out of existence, most of them listless and searching. Like you, they're wearing gilded filigree and draped fabrics and masks, but unlike you, they don't seem to notice many of the modern decorations in the astrarium--they dance and chatter and move about through the center, seemingly unaware that there are two galas happening at once. You blink, and for just a moment the ceiling disappears, giving way to an open and starry sky above. One of the figures pauses in their dance to look at you. It's someone you've lost to time, and it seems clear from their expression that they know exactly who you are under your mask.

What was in that champagne?

You start to think...maybe you've been here before.

Quote:
What this means:
  • Characters choosing to participate in the past life portion may now begin play in the Silver Millenium gala, linked above. For the remainder of the gala, they will proceed to have flickers of memories from this event, as per the Golden Vial item.
  • Characters not participating in the past life portion may see the shade of one person important to them from this lifetime who has died and interact with them freely. Other people may see the shade, but they are only interested in speaking with the person who 'invited' them back to the Gala. They may be aware that they're dead, but have no memory of the afterlife or what it feels like to be part of the cauldron.
  • It only takes a single sip, but no champagne, no crazy effects! Sorry, folks! Of course, being sober means you get to make fun at the crazies talking to ghosts.
  • This prompt will stay up for three days--look for the clock to strike 10 on Saturday evening!

'I want to dance with you.'

Valkyrie was already smiling when he passed her the extra glass. She opened her mouth to say that she would like to dance too, lips parting gently in the briefest moment before he kissed her.

Heart stuttered. Eyes closed, lashes brushing the tops of cheeks flooding faintest pink.

His lips were soft, the kiss too short.

"Mmkay," she said, exhaling both approval and surprise, watching him walk away from her down the stairs.

Valkyrie touched her lips, started to smile again. And then she followed him.

[Exit to the foyer, and then to the gallery.]

A Good Time

Unbeknownst to A Good Time, the Barkeep had left his station. So while he was feeling particularly parched by all the festivities, he found that much of the social lube migrated elsewhere. He hummed to himself, considered some of the unattended glasses, and claimed one for himself off one of Chauvet's worn down but staunchly elegant counters. Then he ascended to the balcony zenith where he could watch the chandelier turn and dance as the attendees did below.

He hadn't yet found anyone familiar, or really, anyone at all but for the Windy Thing. He sipped the champagne, watched the colors shift in that grandiose chandelier. He should find someone, he told himself. Maybe single out another lonesome in the constantly churning crowd of people. As he held the champagne close to chest, hip nearly touching the railing, he considered the others around.

Best shot, he decided, were the ladies gathered at the other end. Both looked stunning, but A Good Time found that words often failed to express the grandeur at places like these — especially when some kind of wonder magic overtook them and turned them all prettier than sin. At least the liberal supplies of champagne helped loosen the tongue, else most would have no chance interacting at all in a place like this.

A Good time sauntered toward them, glass held up in an informal cheer while his expression acquiesced to a grin. "Having A Good Time? Oh, what am I saying — of course you are."

Heartshocker (Nembus)

There was talk of opening a gallery down below her by a strange ghostly woman, and then another woman. From what she gathered, this was definitely the promotion ceremony of a Knight...

So why was she here?

It was curious, that she had somehow gotten invited. Was it a mistake? It certainly felt like a mistake. She was a servant of Metallia, after all, bound to her whims and her Chaotic fancies. What use would a knight have with her? And it wasn't like the knight was Themiscyra, so it wasn't even someone she was familiar with--

"Oh," stated Nembus, a bit dumbly, when she realized that someone was talking to her, directly.

Great first impression.

At least they couldn't actually tell who she was.

"Ah, yes, it is!" Nembus recovered, smoothly, looking out at the space down below. "I appreciate the beauty of everything above and below. Glad I got invited." Was she? She guessed she was. It was better than being left out of everything once-- Wait, who was approaching them?

His grin was kind of handsome, she supposed--

"Yes," she thought, anyway, and she sounded about as hesitant as someone who wasn't having a good time would. Was this a good time? Was she supposed to introduce herself? How did masquerades even work-- "I'm Limbus."

... Wait, what?

"I'm Nimble."

Nope.

"I'm Heartshocker," she settled on, grimly.

The Gatekeeper

She was content to watch the people around her. The Gatekeeper didn't know who was who, and oddly that was okay. She found she didn't need to. She didn't need to know who was behind each mask, if any of her fellow Chronos knights were here. Not that she expected them to try to locate her; she'd gone radio silent for a year and a half.

Being in space brought back those memories, and the feelings that had prompted her self imposed exile. She shifted with a firm breath through her nose. No, she would not be in that headspace now.

If some of hers found her, then she would deal with the fall out then.

Images flittered across the corners of her vision as she approached a young man she most definately did not know. She smiled at him and introduced herself to Light Wizard.

"Hello! I'm the Gatekeeper, how are you enjoying the gala?" she asked him, holding a flute of champagne in delicate fingers. Talking to people, she had to get used to talking to people again.

Bumblebee (Dessie Jacobs)

By the time Dessie made it to the top of the staircase she had finished her glass of champagne, a convenient spot was perfect for the empty glass. She had also started to notice the ghostly figures that were after images of a party from the long past. It is not the first time she had seen such figures, just never that many or so clearly. Or for so long. It was rather disconcerting to say the least.

With a slight frown the blonde started to drift further into the space only to stop in surprise. She had seen the cat nomming on the pizza and getting shitfaced in the foyer, it was pretty hard not to notice such a thing, but the two cats who were hanging with a tall blonde male was not something she expected. One seemed to be napping on the long green jacket, or maybe not napping but most definitely just laying there with no intention of moving. The second cat seemed to be a bit more 'helpful' but that was just by cat standards but by human standards: not by much.

"Well thats one way to be entertained at a shindig like this," Dessie said softly as she slid up to the banister over looking the foyer, still keeping a safe distance from the tall man just in case this 'trap' really was more then it appeared... and considering the ghostly figures that were milling around that seemed so much more likely.

Light Wizard

Light Wizard almost jumped when he heard a voice address him as he had been staring off into space, admiring the Astrarium. Luckily for him, neither of the glasses that he had managed to spill. He let out a sigh of relief and turned toward the person who had addressed him and gave them a smile. "It's nice to meet you Gatekeeper. I'm Light Wizard." He was pretty sure he had never seen the woman before him, which was okay. It was good to meet new people!

"So far I'm enjoying it, even if I haven't done too much." A blush appeared on his face, but was hidden by the mask. "But I do love exploring Wonders and Homeworlds, so this is nice! Even if I wasn't expecting it to be quite like this." A lot of it had Earth hints to it, but he couldn't blame Chauvet for it. After all, it's not as though chairs and tables would magically appear on Wonders just because. "What about you? You like the gala?"

Fish Out of Water

Did he like to dance?

His heart was pounding in his chest as she gingerly placed her hand in his, Fish not used to being physically touched. It was nice - it was far more pleasant than expected and he had a sneaking suspicion that it was because of who it was and the fact he already felt comfortable around the nerd dressed up like a beautiful woman that evening.

"I can hold my own, if you're worried about me having two left feet," he tried to reassure with a smile, guiding her from the stairs to a more level surface but taking his time while doing so.

She didn't have to know that all of his dancing experiences came from dancing with Umma when he was young, watching old black and white movies with men in penguin outfits and women in dazzling gowns as they glided across the dance floor. He'd always led for his mother when they pretended to dance but he'd also been several feet shorter than her when they'd done so -- hopefully he'd remember a step or two, if luck was on his side.

Blue eyes cut over and he studied the profile of her face as slyly as he could.

"So... what brings you out to such a fancy affair, this evening?"
