The needle in their makeshift compass was undeniably pointing straight into the water. Not one of the boats, not further down the dock, but into the water. Ian sighed, raking a hand through his auburn curls. Well, at the very least it would be a way to cool off. He hadn't been terribly hot before but now the sun was beating down in the prime of the day with no nearby shade.
"Well, at least now you can cool off if you want!" Eden perked up, fanning herself slightly with one hand as she held the compass in the other. "I can man the compass from up here and maybe give you more specific directions but... I don't really want to get in the water." She toyed with the ends of her hair a little. She'd worked very hard on it today, not to mention her makeup. She would get in if she had to, but there were at least two if not three of them willing to search at this point. That would probably do. "I'm a great lookout, too!"
"Do you know how to swim, Yuri?" Ian asked, more concerned about that fact than whether or not the wolf was willing to get in the water. He'd rather avoid a near-drowning if he could, especially with a fairly newborn Raevan being the victim. He was glad that Eden didn't seem too keen on getting in the water; they hadn't addressed swimming yet. Perhaps another time.
Ian stepped to the side slightly and peeled off his shirt with a sigh, and hesitated on his shorts. Since they were a fairly lightweight cotton material he left them on, but kicked off his shoes and socks for good measure. "Well, at least it'll be cool?" He sat on the edge of the dock and dangled his feet into the water, before rather clumsily lowering himself off and into the calm waves. It was a bit of a shock from the warm sunlit air, but nonetheless very refreshing. He started by looking under the edge of the dock while he could without dipping his head below the surface.

Moving along the pier in a gated community was a strange feeling compared to the public boardwalk by Cruz's home. It was much quieter, for one (though eager seagulls still squawked incessantly for scraps), and there was hardly a soul around. The privately owned boats, rather than commercial barges and water taxis, had very different vibes and the croc wondered if some of these people actually used their houseboats as houses or just little getaways.
When they finally reached the water's edge and the needle pointed to it without question this time -- not some mysterious piece of crap -- Cruz let out a short breath. To be honest, he was itching for a swim since he had gotten ready to before but now that he handled their first essence he was all the more ready for a quick cleanse in the salty sea.
Yuri's address was met with Cruz having already removed his bag and hooded jacket, setting them aside close to Yves' feet for safe keeping (his phone an important item among them), and was lifting his crop top when their eyes locked. "We can both look," Cruz assured with a small smile, finally ridding himself of the shirt and only having a small cloth tie around his waist over his ribbon.
There was no sense of shame or modesty in the croc, not even for poor Eden as he drifted past her and into the water along with Ian. "Thanks, that'll help," he told her, grinning once he was down to his shoulders in the water. He smiled toward Ian, too, for good measure.
With a breath, Cruz sunk below the gentle waves but there was no luck yet.

The water in the marina was slightly murky, no doubt from the pollution of the boats docked there. The fel essence was no where near the surface, perhaps they may need to dive down deeper. The water was pretty deep, at least deep enough to safely harbour all these huge ships.

As Yuri jumped in though, due to his inexperience in the water, he misjudged the depth and the fact that he needed to breathe. The Raevan went in too deep and barely got to the surface in time. He had to be fished out of the water as he was passed out when he resurfaced.

It was clear on Ian's face that he was hesitant to actually dive beneath the surface. Though the water wasn't an unusual color despite its cloudiness, you never know what could be lurking at the bottom. This was precisely why he rarely -- if ever -- went swimming other than in chlorinated pools. "Well, I guess we'll have to dive down," he said with a smile that was less than enthusiastic. Taking a deep breath, he sank beneath the surface in a cluster of bubbles. He did his best to search, but was unfortunately unable to open his eyes underwater; between the saltwater and his contacts, it didn't seem like the best idea.
Eden glanced around as the others searched, floating over to a boat to grab a few towels for when they needed them. If the owner returned, she would just explain. They couldn't walk around soaking wet, after all! She had just gotten back to where the others had gotten in the water when she noticed Yuri struggling to resurface. "Yuri!" She dropped her bag and swooped down to try and lift him out of the water, but wasn't strong enough. Despite the wolf's partially-formed body he was considerably heavier than she could lift. "Help, he's too heavy!"
When Ian resurfaced, unsuccessful, it was clear Yuri was in trouble. Between the four of them they managed to get him back up onto the dock, and Ian climbed out in a panic. "Yuri, can you hear us?!" He immediately checked his breathing.

Cruz was back under the water, deeper this time. His naturally webbed wings were well suited to diving and swimming. The murkiness of the water kept him from seeing anything, which made it pointless to have his eyes open, but as he swam deeper with his arms outstretched, feeling and clutching for anything unusual, he thought he felt something brush against his skin -- just as some kind of thrashing happened overhead. The croc rose back up, empty handed once again, and gasped for a breath just as he barely broke the surface.
For a moment, he couldn't figure out what happened but when he finally spotted Ian pulling Yuri out of the water, Cruz jolted and began back toward his group and pressed his claws into the dock without removing himself from the water. "Is he--" Cruz stopped himself, knowing the answer would be obvious in a few moments, but with the slight bob of the waves against him the croc couldn't even tell if Yuri was breathing.

Water wasn't a scary thing to Yuri. He took showers, he helped Yves wash the dishes. When it was hot, he sprayed the hose for their small dog to play in. So when he dove into the water, he had done so without hesitation and, consequently, without much thought.
It was much deeper than the bath tub at home.
Yves had turned away - just for a moment, he'd been sure - and pretty soon there were people and Raevans dipping into the water at the marina. He decided it would be best to keep watch, not only because he was not a strong swimmer, but because he also wanted to keep a close eye on Yuri. Yuri had never gone swimming before, not real swimming, so when he volunteered to go in, Yves instinctively wanted to protest but decided to give him a chance.
Parents couldn't be too overbearing, after all.
The next few moments caused Yves to immediately regret that thought. It happened so quickly and all in a blur: Yuri had sank into the water like the heavy stone he was, and before Yves could properly react, Eden was trying to pull him out of the water and then Ian was helping, too.
"Yuri," Yves breathed, and flew next to his Raevan's body faster than his feet could register. He nearly tripped over Ian as he stumbled over, arms out, grasping at Yuri's shoulders to help draw him onto the docks. Ian was checking his breathing, but Yuri had already fallen unconscious. Fearing the worst, Yves tried to recall his days of CPR training and began chest compressions. It felt kind of strange when Yuri hardly had a torso, but before long the frei began to cough water up.
Sputtering, Yuri rolled onto his side and continued to cough between gasps for air. He stared ahead, wide-eyed and confused, at Eden and Ian.
"Thank god!" Yves cried, well on his way to tears. "I am such an idiot, I'm so sorry, Yuri, oh my god." He smoothed Yuri's bangs back out of his face and propped him up against his arm. Yuri blinked against the sunlight, dazed and not registering what was being said to him.
"What... what happened?" he asked, voice raspy from inhaling water. He was swimming - swimming, for the first time! - and then it all went black. He felt awful. He rubbed his head, ears pinned back.

Thankfully Yuri recovered from the near drowning without much harm. And they didn't seem to had drawn attention from anyone nearby as well. A few towels had been left out to dry in the sun on the opposite side of the pier, next to a boat. They could use it if they wish to since the owner doesn't seem like they're around.
Despite the drama though, there is still a fel essence at the bottom of the sea that needs to be found.

Eden hovered close as Yves began pushing on Yuri's chest, a flicker of worry crossing her face. Her wings fluttered anxiously and she glanced at Ian, whose face was pale and panicked. He'd never thought of a Raevan potentially dying before, even though he figured it was perfectly reasonable -- especially if they couldn't swim.
Thankfully Yuri was soon sputtering and coughing, which meant air in his lungs. Both Eden and her guardian sighed in relief, the former floating up a bit higher now that the scary part was over. "You passed out in the water," she said a bit matter-of-factly. "We pulled you out, and now you're awake!" Ian gave her a scolding look that lasted only a moment before he reached out to pat Yuri's arm.
"You're okay now, though. Eden, get him that towel, would you?" He gestured to one of a few colorful towels hanging on the railing of a nearby yacht. The nymph drifted over and pulled it down rather unceremoniously, handing it to Yuri. Ian sighed and glanced back toward the water where Cruz was waiting anxiously by the dock. "Well, let's see if we can find this thing quickly. That way we can leave sooner and get you back in the car."
He scooted back toward the edge of the dock and paused. "Actually, take my keys. You can go sit with the air conditioning and wait, if you want." He handed them to Yves, figuring they might want to go recover in comfort instead of the blazing sun on the dock. After handing the keys over he dipped back into the water and took a breath, plunging down blind.ex o ex Snoof sorry for the delay! i had some crazy school stuff going on @ x @;

Leaning his arms against the dock, Cruz deflated with relief. That was quite a scare, but Yuri had managed to snap out of it thanks to everyone else's help. The croc shrunk back slightly, not wanting to interfere with all of them tending to the gasping wolf, but as Ian returned to the water and Eden passed Yuri a towel, Cruz offered a worried smile when he caught the bone frei's eye.
"You're okay," he said, quite uselessly he thought, "You should rest. Don't worry about this." Hopefully that was any kind of reassurance. Cruz was grateful that Yves was granted Ian's keys and hoped the groomer would take him up on the offer for Yuri's sake. Cruz glanced uncertainly to Eden, as if she could offer any help on the matter besides, but there was little to be done. If Ian was still looking, he would too despite the fresh desire to head back to the Lab with the meager haul they had.Logue I think we're allowed to just keep rolling/posting now??

Slowly, Yuri sat himself up, resting his weight on his elbows. Yves still had his hand held protectively to his back to prop him up, but Yuri took a few deep breaths and felt a bit better. His heart was pounding in his chest - was that what it felt like to... die? Would he even know when it actually happened? He rubbed his face with both hands and rose back into the air, his ribbon hanging listlessly around his dimmed rune, ragged and torn and now soaked.
When Ian offered his car keys, Yuri peeked out through his fingers at him, and then he frowned and shook his head. Ian was very kind to offer him refuge in his own car, even though he was soaked, and he appreciated the gesture. Secretly, though, he also appreciated Eden's bluntness - Yves was always so careful with his words and how they would be perceived that he sometimes said a lot. Eden was to the point and he understood it well.
"No, I-I can still help," he mumbled, rubbing his eyes. He shook his head quickly, as if to shake off the whole experience, and drifted back toward the water. He hesitated at the dock's edge, gazing warily down into the depths below, but was promptly stopped by Yves before he could make a decision.
"No," was all that Yves said, his voice soft but firm. He had Yuri by the hand now; Yuri tugged a bit but gave up after that. It was clear - to everyone, probably - that he needed more practice in the water before attempting something like that again.
Defeated, the frei floated back away from the water and looked at the group, from Eden to Cruz and Ian in the water.
"I'm sorry," he mumbled, rubbing his arm. Yves kept close to him, protectively.
"It's alright, Yuri." Yves gripped his hand and nodded at Cruz. "Listen to them. Just rest. They... they don't mind."
He felt bad for not wishing to jump into the water; not because it was wet and he was wearing a very nice shirt, but because it would take an entire platoon to remove him from his Raevan's side in the state he was now in. Yuri's rune had dulled a bit from the shock, and so Yves remained glued to his side as they watched Cruz and Ian search for the fel essence. Both Yves and Yuri silently planned to make it up to the group for being unable to contribute.

Eden had returned to her cell phone in the meantime, leaning against one of the railing posts on the dock as she scrolled endlessly through various social media accounts. She saw some photos that Vesna had posted, no doubt of their own searches, and silently pouted. Why couldn't their stops be that cool? It was pretty here, sure, but ultimately a bit boring. She was definitely not getting in the water, so she had little to do except (sort of) keep an eye out.
When she heard Yuri apologize, bright green eyes drifted up to look at him over her dark sunglasses. "No worries. At least you have an excuse not to get back in; I just don't want to." She laughed a little and glanced at the murky water. Normally she might have at least floated in it, but diving underneath was another story entirely.
Meanwhile Ian was having quite the unsuccessful time of it underneath the surface. After a bit of searching with his eyes closed, hands outstretched in front of him, he felt something brush against his arm. But it was definitely moving, and likely not the essence. Startled, he quickly surfaced with a shiver. "Ugh, I think a fish just touched me."

Disappointingly, Cruz appeared to be having the same luck. Fish, he supposed, kept swimming through the end of his ribbon and making it sway to and fro with the current. As he rose for a gasp of air, the croc caught Ian's comment and gave a sympathetic chuckle. "Ugh, I think a human just touched me," he joked in a slightly higher voice, only to dip his head and look a bit sheepish with his smile, "That's what it told its friends. Probably." Anita was always better at these kinds of things but he hoped it lightened the mood a little.

Yuri floated aimlessly by the edge of the dock, near Eden and Yves, and watched Cruz and Ian dive and search for the fel essence. Cruz's joke elicited a chuckle from Yves, but Yuri didn't quite get it and looked at Cruz strangely. For a second he took the joke literally and wondered if Cruz could talk to fish, but if he could, it would probably be much easier to find the fel essence.
Scratching his head, Yuri glanced from the water to Yves. He felt winded and dizzy, but also restless. The desire to help was, ultimately, trumped by the dull state of his rune and the aching feeling in his head, but he still gave Yves a pleading look.
"No," Yves repeated, and crossed his arms. He pursed his lips at Yuri, feeling sympathetic despite his sternness. "I'm sorry, but no. It's too dangerous for a newbo--"
"Not a newborn," Yuri growled under his breath, turning his head away so Yves might not catch it. Yves rapped his index finger against his own arm, trying not to become irritated. Children really weren't easy, that much he had expected. Finally, after what felt like an agonizingly long silence, Yves sighed and undid the top button of his shirt. He looked right at Eden and gestured toward Yuri.
"I will go in. I hate to be a bother, but will you please keep an eye on Yuri for me?" Yuri quickly looked at him in disbelief, but Yves was quick to add, "Only because I am worried about your condition. You need to take it easy. Understand?"
Yuri let his arms hang limply at his sides and he rolled his eyes. "Yes," he muttered in response, and took to trying to wring out his ribbon. It felt strange to have it just... hanging there. He slanted Eden a hesitant and shy look, but his gaze fell back to the dock shortly after. He wanted to lower himself until he was just lying on the dock, but some strange inkling of pride kept him afloat. He really just wanted to sit down.
"I will be right back," Yves promised, and before Yuri could react he ruffled his damp hair and ears.
Yves strode to the end of the dock and took off his shoes. With great care he slid into the water, wincing at how cold it was. His shirt could be replaced, if needed, although he did take a few seconds to mourn it as he submerged himself into the water. He had to help, somehow.
After one unsuccessful dive, he quickly resurfaced to see Yuri staring intently at him.
"Be careful," Yuri whispered, now clutching his ribbon between both skeletal hands.

Ian had given a soft chuckle at Cruz's joke before he'd taken a breath and gone back underwater. Eden smiled as well, but hadn't looked up from her phone until Yves addressed her directly. She glanced from the human to his charge, who looked rather upset with the situation and the restriction placed upon him. She offered him another smile before replying to Yves. "Sure, no problem. We'll bond," she said with a slight lilt to her voice.
Meanwhile Ian was waving his hands around on the bottom of the bay, trying to ignore the slippery feeling of the plants that slid along his arms. It was a bit gross, but thankfully the water took away any slippery or slimy sensations. Suddenly he felt his hands brush over something distinctly different from its surroundings, and he curled his fingers around it. Thankfully he didn't gasp in surprise, but did try to bring whatever it was to the surface. Could it be the essence?!
