She woke up with a lighter head, and a bit more energy, and was quite surprised that the concussion seemed to have faded away. Maria knew that a concussion didn't heal that quickly, but maybe she had miss-diagnosed herself. Maybe it really wasn't that bad?

As she began to think it over, a sudden explosion seemed to sound in the distance. Turning her head, she was all but horrified to see the night sky lit up by fireworks. Looking around, her and others stilled in fear of undying appearing and being drawn to the noise. The five minutes seemed to go on forever, and everyone let out a breath when the fireworks stopped and silence filled the air.

Curiosity seemed to quickly cover the fear as everyone began to head toward the fireworks, and no undying really around. As they neared the location of the noise, they were shocked again to see a casino. As she moved into the light, the doors began to open, and Maria finally took the time to step fully inside.

Maria was overwhelmed by the lights, the smells and the atmosphere of the casino. As soon as she entered, she moved with the crowd and became excited at the sights. Her fingers itched to pull the slot machine and see if she'd hit a jackpot, even if it was near impossible odds.

As she drew closer to a machine, the attendant came by and handed her a drink, which she promptly took a sip of with a bright grin.

"Welcome to Delta Casinos! To begin, we will play with a currency called Casino coins. You can use them later for fantastic prizes!"

Maria picked up the coins and nodded each time someone directed her around, and she continued to eye the slots. With a determined grin, she headed over to see where her odds would take her.

Her first roll spun with bright colors and sounds, and Maria let out a bit of a laugh when the machine spit out two coins after she got a pair. This wasn't too bad, in fact it seemed quite simple. So she might as well keep rolling with her luck!

A second pull, a second spin, and a second set of coins spit out from the machine. Maria began to bounce with excitement, feeling her luck rise as she decided to try on more time.

Laughing as the third spin resulted in more coins, Maria decided she had enough and began to stand. All at once, the atmosphere hit her again, and she felt her palms grow damp. What was happening? She looked around and felt herself grow fuzzy, and her vision began to blur a bit. After a long moment, she stumbled away from the machines and fell into darkness.

Maria woke up to find her body stiffly tied to a chair, and she glanced wildly around to see where she was. Everything was sore, but she didn't feel anything too concerning in terms of damage. Finally done with her self examination, she looked around and tried to peer through the darkness. Other people were around, but she couldn't tell if they were in the same situation as her, or worse.

Just as she began to adjust to the darkness, a blinding light lit the room and she snapped her eyes shut in pain. A voice broke through the silence, and it took a long moment for Maria to realize what was going on. Her eyes adjusted, and she realized she as in a classroom of sorts.

She couldn't understand, so she simply refused to, and focused on the speakers.

"Attention all Casino players! Welcome to our tenth annual casino games! A big round of applause to our new players!"

Applause began to play, and Maria tried to move to get out of her bindings. It didn't happen, and her shoulders slumped as she listened to the words being said, but couldn't understand what they really meant. Lucky number? Drawing? Life? Freedom? What was going on?

As soon as they spoke of auctioning and dinner, she felt herself still completely. When he asked for questions, she all but scrambled to ask one and get some answers, foolishly not thinking before she opened her mouth.

Yet, before she could even say something, the announcer interrupted and talked about another price. Falling back with a dejected look on her face, Maria didn't see the attendant until the last second and let out a scream as she was dragged away, chair and all, into another room. She could only stare at the two other people tied to a chair, and her face grew white as the man told her to choose.

She closed her eyes as tears came to her eye. How could she just choose? Her body began to shake and she didn't want to make this choice, she couldn't make this choice. Opening her eyes and they land on the man.

"Him." She said simply, refusing to look at the woman as she was dragged out screaming. She tried to not focus on the room, and it was easy when the man began to run, "No!"

She yelled out just as guns went off, her ears ringing in the small room as the teen falls to the ground and dies. Maria was stunned, and had no words as the announcer simply let her know it was time to continue.

Maria just sat, stunned.

Maria stood silently as two assistants moved around her. As one asked questions the other seemed keen to poke and prod, as well as dig through her current items. She tried to not snap back in irritation as they clucked about, and lifted her chin when they placed the collar on her neck.

"155, you are a good one aren't ya?"

One asked with a smirk, before sweeping an arm out to allow Maria out to the casino floor.

Maria stepped up to the slots, her hand shaking a bit from everything as she went to grab her coin. All of a sudden, the idea of spending a coin to get something seemed a bit meaningless. Yet, she needed to increase her coins, and so she placed one into the slot and pulled the machine.

As each number popped up, her heart beat fast. Nothing...nothing...and then, a double, and music, as three coins popped out of the machine.

As she felt a bit confident, she took another coin and placed it in the machine. Pulling the device, she felt her hope build as the numbers spun, before another double dropped three coins. She looked around to see how others were faring, and noticed between white faces a bit of optimism.

Her third try brought forth additional excitement, and she began to lean toward the light and feel her heart race as she pulled the slot machine. Another pair, and another payout, leaving her jumping a bit as money began to pile up. Laughing lightly, she looked around before hiding her excitement.

Rubbing her hands, she pulled for a forth time and watched the numbers spin, letting out a squeak as she got another pair. Two more coins, and her confidence in the game was up, and she knew she just had to try once more.

As she pulled once more, she again got three more coins. All at once she let out a whoop, before glares were sent her way. Blushing, she moved to stand and walked away, but not before she heard a scuffle as others raced to take her machine.

⚔ Day 4/5: Enter Jaco⚔

Link ⚔ Here
Word Count ⚔ 475
Reward ⚔ Jaco Enters The Meta

Jaco's stomach was aching.

As he 'stomped' around the middle of town, a soft whining could be heard coming from his lips. His hands rubbed against the fabric on his stomach, and he just couldn't help but whine louder as he moved along.

"Food...so hungry...why is there no food?"

Grumbling some more, he moved closer to where town square was, and noticed with some interest the large gathering outside of the hall. Logically, any large gathering meant food. Perking up at the thought of finally getting something to eat, he darted over and floated a few feet up to get a better view of what was going on.

"There...is no food..." He whined at once, floating down in a melodrama flutter before settling on the ground like a sack of potatoes. Around him, people moved closer to see the commotion, and eventually he did too with a forlorn look across his features. Eventually, as if giving up on his endless quest, he finally listened to what the little gnome-like creature had to say.

Humans were in trouble? Blinking, he shifted closer and picked up a booklet they were handing out, curiously looking it over a long moment before dropping the thing under his shirt. Taking a breath as the booklet disappeared without a trace, he drifted closer still and began to get excited. A journey to the human world would be quite the adventure, and he heard they had some interesting food. There was no way he would pass up the chance to eat something unique, and different, and so he darted ahead of the line and picked up his passport, grinning and moving toward the portals.

As he passed the house elf, he felt the praise of the other and nodded, although his mind wasn't quite on the humans he was being sent to save. But hey, if he didn't save their world, it would mean no more food, and that was something he couldn't accept.

When he finally went through the portal (oh what an experience) he came out with a little cheer. That was until he saw the world around him, covered in fog and with creatures that he didn't want to look twice at. Where were the houses of food, or the places where smells filled the air? All he could smell was damp and soggy, not a delicious scent.

Grumbling, he thought back to the book he had consumed, and began to float aimlessly through the fog. After what felt like hours, he approached an area with a girl on the floor, a human. Curious, he looked down at her for a long moment, and wondered if she knew how to cook something. If he saved her, maybe he could ask? Drifting closer, he began to pick her up in an effort to get her home.
