Maddie couldn't help but let her eyes light up in joy as soon as the assignment came up! She knew exactly who to ask! Prancing home the entire way, she managed to worm her Dad into taking her shopping, dragging him along from shop to shop, buying each and every supply. The next day, she gladly came into class, beaming from ear to ear as she set down the delicate little ball of glass.
"I even drew a picture!" She chirped, setting it next to the terrarium.

Watching with rapt attention as the teacher demonstrated his own terrarium, Miela broke out into a wide grin. That had to be magic, surely! The teacher had thoroughly explained that it wasn't, but Miela still equated science to magic that had a definite explanation. "Dirt, water, a plant... And a lid?" Miela carefully assembled her terrarium that night, lovingly arranging the dirt so that the water made sort of a shoreline next to the small dandelion she chose to put inside as well. Screwing on the lid and taping a crayon-scrawled name tag on top, she clapped her hands and grinned.

She ran happily over to the teacher the next day, holding the little jar up for him to see. "I'm done! Isn't it pretty?" She looked up at him eagerly, her wings flaring out excitedly.

Raia listened absently as Professor Dax went over the steps of the scientific method. She'd read all this in her textbook last night, and this seemed to not only apply to scientific experiments but really any new concept ever created anywhere. Enchanting, Alchemy, even the arts. You couldn't become a classic play unless people were willing to preform it over and over again and prove it was worth doing with results that were in the tolerances of being acceptable.

She sighed and doodled in the corner of her paper, her tail twitching just slightly as she drew a stick figure in a dress on a stage...She quickly scratched it out and straightened up and forced herself to listen more attentively to the lecture, and work on the homework that was then passed out afterwards.

User ImageThe terrarium project was a blast! The room got messy with soil, but the feel of patting it into place, making a little indent for the water, and then pouring it in was bliss for Quilo. He added several tufts of grass from the available plants and tied a piece of plastic wrap over the top with a rubber band. With his terrarium all finished, he signed his name on it and put it on the windowsill where it could get some light. Quilo was practically bursting with pride. He couldn't wait to show Ella and Tarin! They'd be so happy. He wondered what theirs would look like.

User ImageBath walked into science class thinking it would be boring, so he sat down at the back and relaxed in his chair, watching as their teacher fussily rearranged the overhead projector sheets.

He regretted his decision once Dax finally opened his big dumb mouth. Batholith's heart began to race and he leaned forward in his seat. Today's subject was geology? It was plate tectonics? The most important discovery in the advancement of the earth sciences?! Gah, stupid, stupid Bath for sitting in the back today, of all days! His heart's pounding almost drowned out the half-Chimera's words in his ears. He scribbled furiously in his notebook, leaving indentations on pages and pages to come. When class ended, he sprang to his feet and rushed to the front of the room.

"We'll be doing plate tectonics tomorrow, right? Only, I don't think you've covered all of the material, we didn't get to the core today, or to magnetic switches and the evidence they leave behind on mid-ocean ridges..." It all came out in a blur, stumbled and strung together, and almost shouted at the teacher. "Uh, sorry, Mr. Tan. Just kind of excited. Uh, it's a pretty interesting topic. Y'know, a lot of, uh, topics in the topic of geology. Wouldn't you say?"

User ImageScience class would be a whole lot easier if Melisara could actually read Mr. Tan's writing. It was very cramped, and as it was, she was glad she was sitting towards the front of the classroom. She wrote down all of the steps, then rewrote them as a flowchart. They all sounded pretty simple, so why did anyone see the need to teach them? Would they ever learn real science in this class? Or was it all just going to be methods and equipment?

Ah, well. Her job was to do well in school. She knew her father would shake his head at her for thinking that this stuff was boring--numerology borrowed heavily from the sciences. She sighed. She didn't want to disappoint her father. She sat up straighter in her seat and tried to be more attentive.

Dax was surprised as he was suddenly approached by the hybrid who'd just recently joined the class. Considering their appearance he hadn't really expected them to be all that interested in something like geology, and unfortunately it was one of Dax's weakest subjects when it came to science. "Ah...well...we'll be covering a few more topics, yes." he said a little nervously. The urge to click his scales rising. "And yes, there are a lot of things to cover...we just don't have the time of course to cover them all..." he was starting to sweat and he pushed up his glasses. "Ah...if it interests you that much...perhaps...perhaps I could suggest a few books? I just...umm...this topic isn't really my forte..." he said shuffling a bit.

As soon as the assignment was given, Tarin knew exactly who to ask for advice, Sari had been an engineering student before she'd dropped out of Leviathan, so how to best construct a project like this was definitely her forte.

Tarin dutifully took notes as they discussed what kind of plants might be best and she settled on finding some ferns that would do relatively well. There were even promises of a possible pet if she got a good grade. After all it was a waste to make such an elaborate unit and not put something in it.

Satisfied she'd gotten all she could Tarin raided some of the storage closets finding an old aquarium and carefully set to work filling it with soil, sand, water and eventually some ferns she "borrowed" from one of the greenhouses. She had to have some help getting it to class the next day, but she felt proud of herself none the less.

Ivy was intrigued by the notion of this project. It didn't seem much different from a greenhouse, and she'd been in and out of them with Momma since as long as she could remember. She considered how to construct hers and then sat down and found a rather nice globe and constructed her terrarium.

She politely asked some of the older students for a few of the little white flowers in one of the flower boxes and added them in as her "plant" aspect. She had to do some searching in order to find a cork that fit but once she did it was perfect.

She silently presented it to Mr. Dax the next day with a tiny smile and took her seat.

User ImageBatholith sighed with relief. Good. He had a few more days to soak in the rocky goodness from the front of the classroom this time, thank you very much. "Just wanted to make sure," he said nonchalantly. "And hey, if you could point me in the direction of a few books, it would be much appreciated." He'd checked out a couple so far, but he was curious to know what sort of books Mr. Tan might find useful for the subject. Besides, maybe he'd direct him towards some of the books he hadn't checked out yet. "Thank you, sir."

Oh no. Mr. Tan's handwriting was so hard to read... Neptune squinted in an attempt to decipher what he was writing, but when that didn't work he just.... sat back and hoped he was hearing everything correctly.

When he got the homework sheet, he stared at it for a moment before sighing and started filling it out... with his best guesses......

Already familiar with how the scientific method worked, Yihad didn't have much trouble figuring out how to do the worksheet. What hu did have a problem with was trying to read the teacher's not so easily visible handwriting on the chalk board from where hu was sitting. Back of the classroom as far as hu could from everyone else, Yihad was starting to regret this spot the more hu tried to read the board. If anything, the only way hu would fail is if hu had to completely rely on reading what was on the board for this class.

Once everyone else had turned their assignments in at the end of class and left, Yihad made hus way to the front and quietly handed hus work to Dax, afraid to mention to hus teacher how it was hard to read his handwriting from the back of the class. Instead of voicing about hus inability to read the board, hu ended up just rushing out of the classroom, trying hard not to run in the hallways as hu tried to make it to hus next class.

Leilah has been able to use what she had been shown for an example in class and her own skills in research to put her terrarium together. She had to admit it had been more fun than she had expected. She was proud of the moss and little sprout she had growing in her little jar. Just look out how cute they were. So far it seemed to be thriving and she was proud to turn it in to Dax when she came in to class.

Foras was more concerned about making his terrarium look cool instead of practical. So he found a nice jar to set his terrarium up in and than found some pretty rocks to decorate the bottom with. The next steps he followed by the example Dax had given them in class. He added soil and used a little stick to dig a whole for some water to settle in. Than placed in some moss and a little plant. By the time he woke the next morning there was another sprout! He was happy to turn in the project the following day in class.

User Image Maria, sadly, didn't know who to go to for help on her project. She wasn't experienced with plants, and she was a terrible artist. Originally, she briefly contemplated not handing it in. How many points would be docked? Could she just... skip class that day?

No.

She was going to be a mother some day, and everything she did she needed to make sure she wouldn't be ashamed of her future kids knowing! Skipping class? Not turning your homework in? Unacceptable! So, with much uncertainty, she set to work. It took her awhile, but the day the assignment was due she waddled into the room, holding a small jar and a picture in her hands. Slipping it on the desk, the hybrid fluttered to her desk, nervously hiding her hands in her face.
