FRESHLING:

Plant Life Cycle

Starts: Now
Ends: Nov. 30th, 11:59p EST

Dax had set up little trays with seed cups and packets of seeds on every table for his class. "So before we've talked about plants, at least in the sense of that we know they need sunshine and water in order to grow like we saw in our terrariums." he paused and pushed his glasses up. "Today however we're going to talk about the life cycle of those plants." he smiled a bit. "Once we finish going over that everyone will get the opportunity to plant their own seed and we'll leave them in the window and watch them go through the steps."

He tugged on the screen that was covering the board and revealed a set of drawings showing seed through wilted plant. The weren't very good to be honest, but you could at least tell what you were looking at. An artist Dax was not.

Rules:
1. Complete this worksheet.
2. PM it to Lady Argentum Draconis titled, “Academy Science Plants - insert student name.”
3. Have your student write a short response that they came to class and planted their seed and put it in the window.

JUNIOR:

Multi and Unicellular

Starts: NOW
Ends: Nov 30th, 11:59p EST

"Now that we've covered the differences between plant and animal cells, today we're going to talk about the difference between multicellular and unicellular organisms." he paused and turned on the projector. "Now the initial impression that you can get from the beginning of their names 'multi' and 'uni' is that unicellular organisms are self contained, they don't necessarily need another specimen of their species around to reproduce. An example of this would be bacteria. Multicellular, well we're multicellular, we are one organism comprised of millions upon millions of cells working together." Dax took a moment to get a breath. "So now let's take a closer look between these two types of cells.

Rules:
1. Using this website complete this worksheet. You can ignore the last question.
2. PM it to Lady Argentum Draconis titled “Academy Science Uni and Multicellular- insert student name.”
3. Do not post completed worksheets in the thread. Anyone doing so will automatically fail and disqualify anyone submitting answers after you.

SENIOR:

Star Classification

Starts: NOW
Ends: Nov. 30th, 11:59p EST

Dax was glad to be getting out of geology and into something much more familiar. He looked over his class and smiled. "So today starts a new chapter, we are done with the ground below us, and today we start looking at the sky above us. We're moving into astronomy." There was a slight bounce to his step as he moved to start giving notes. "First thing we're going to do is talk about the classification of stars. Simple enough stars are classified by the color of the light they emit through a spectrometer, which is a device that measures the range of colors that get emitted from anything that gives off light, be it a star or a light bulb."

He paused for a moment. "There are seven levels of classification the hottest stars being classified as O which are stars that burn blue, and ending with M which are the coldest starts, which are red. After that they get organized by mass, temperature and other factors."

Rules:
1. Complete this worksheet with the appropriate information.
2. PM the sheet to Lady Argentum Draconis titled "Academy Science Star Classification - insert student name"
2. Post a short RP response that you came to class.

Vaden listened semi-attentively to Dax's lecture. He was feeling a little distracted today, but he was doing his best to try and stay focused in class. It wouldn't do after all to give the teachers a bad impression on the first day of class after all.

He looked up from his notes as the tawny Impmera gave out an assignment and he opened his text book to see what sort of interesting facts he could provide to satisfy the requirements.

Archean:
1. The atmosphere during the Archean Era was comprised of methane, ammonia and other toxic gasses to creatures living today.
2. The earliest fossils date back 3.5 billion years ago and are bacteria microfossils.
3. The Archean coast was home to mounded colonies of photosynthetic bacteria called stromatolites.

He wrote his name at the top and once class was over placed it in the bin that was sitting on the teachers desk.

Geologic timelines... Well, geology wasn't his main interest, but it could be useful for future reference. He opened up the textbook, then browsed through the various periods to choose one that seemed interesting...

The Cambrian Period
  • The Cambrian period marks the beginning of the paleozoic era. It lasted about 53 million years.
  • In this period there was a great boom of life, mostly invertebrates.
  • Despite starting with an explosion of life, the Cambrian period ended with a mass extinction when glaciers melted and lowered the temperature of many shallow seas.

There. That should do it. He signed his name at the top of the page, then come to the front of the class to turn in it. "Here."

This wasn't Sorren's favorite subject, but she needed to do well to get into the University. When the assignment was given she nodded, trying to decide which period she wanted to do. Of all of them the Jurassic was her favorite. She opened her text book to see what it was that she could remember. "So many good facts..." she muttered to herself before she started to write.

1. The Jurassic Period occurred from 199.6 to 145.5 million years ago.
2. During the Jurassic Period, the supercontinent Pangaea split apart
3. Reptiles were the dominant animal life forms during the Jurassic Period.

As soon as she was done she put her name on the paper and turned it in. She felt inspired to paint some dinosaurs so headed to her dorm to plan out a painting.

Joseth trudged to science class and sat down with a 'harumph' before slowly taking out his notebook and scribbling down the assignment. Science was definitely not his favorite subject. At least he was seated close to the window. He listened to the painfully monotonous lecture about lab equipment and tried his very hardest not to zone out and watch life go on outside of the glass pane next to him. He volunteered to help pass out quizzes to at least make it seem that he participated in some aspect of the class before starting on his own paper.
-
It only took him about 5 minutes to finish the quiz and double-check his answers. He wasn't the first to hand it in, but he was ahead of the bulk of the class. When he returned to his seat, he let his attention wander out the window.

Jezebeth could already tell that this lesson would be an inportant one. She sat straight as she listened to Dax explain what they would be discussing that day and than opened the way for discussions. She waited for a chance to talk, nodding in agreement to what many of the other Freshlings had to say. Dax was quick to point out any mistakes and record what the others had to say on the board as they all discussed.

When it was finally her time to speak up, her face flushed, but she managed a few words anyway. "Living things need some form of food in order to survive! Um...." She paused for a little bit as she thought up a trait for a non-living object. "Non-living things do not grow!" She beamed up at the teacher and smiled as her suggestions were written on the board, and then they moved on as another student spoke. When she was given her worksheet she quietly set to work, circling all the living things with a blue crayon.

Finally setting her bags down, Victoria sat in the lab, taking notes throughout the lecture. While it was boring, she felt like she had really learned something, and was looking forward to all sorts of explosions! Finally, at the end, she handed in her quiz with a smile. "I can't wait to try and use this for the dance routines! Pyrotechnics make everything better!" She grinned, finally skipping off to the next class.

Laurel fidgeted in his desk as the lesson was presented. Living and non-living stuff? That was easy! Vespercats are living things and Vespercat plushies aren't living things! He knew the differences, too! Living things needed to eat, sleep, and move, while non-living stuff didn't do any of that. Like, rocks were non-living. They did nothing, you had to kick them so they would move.

"Living things are warm and fluffy, like a pile of Vespercats!" He cheered, putting his finger to his mouth. "... The fabric on a plushie can be fluffy, but it's not living! It doesn't do any of the stuff a pile of kitties does, even if you can snuggle both of them!"

User Image It took Zahneel a moment to get comfortable at her desk, but once she had, she quickly found herself wondering if all science was so boring. As she listened to the teacher talk about the various kinds of lab equipment that the class would find themselves using, she felt her eyes begin to glaze over. Shaking her head slightly to keep herself awake, she hoped that this class wasn't always so dull.

And once it was time for the quiz, she gave a small sigh of relief. She quickly checked off her answers and quickly turned it in.

User Image Taking out her notes, Ashlynn considered her options. The geologic time scale fascinated her and she wanted to do well on this project. Tapping her pencil against her chin, she finally gave up trying to choose just one and let fate decide for her. Closing her eyes, she stabbed the pencil down on her notes. Upon opening her eyes, she grinned. Fate had chosen... well. Bending over her essay, she began to write.

The Triassic
• A specialized subgroup of archosaurs, the dinosaurs, first appeared in the Late Triassic
• The vast supercontinent of Pangaea existed until the mid-Triassic, after which it began to gradually rift into two separate landmasses, Laurasia to the north and Gondwana to the south
• The highly successful ichthyosaurs appeared in Early Triassic seas and soon diversified, with some eventually developing to huge size during the late Triassic.

Once class was over, the chimera hopped up and handed her paper in.

Kobe nipped his bottom lip as he sat with the class and listened to their teacher talk. He felt pretty good about this topic, knowing enough things that made something alive or not. He listened quietly till the teacher asked for their participation. Kobe shyly lifted his paw, "I-If... i-it breathes a-air... it's l-living." He told him, forgetting her need what made something not living. "u-uh... i-it's not living... i-if..." He trailed off, thinking as fast as he could. "Ifitdoesn'thaveaheart" (if it doesn't have a heart) He blurted out quickly, flushing red and slinking behind his brother.

Once class was let out, Kobe looked at his homework with a small smile. He looked up to their teacher, noting how tall he was before scurrying off to do his homework.

Quentin was more than excited for this class, science was one of his favorite things. As he got settled in his seat, he quietly listened to the teacher explain what all the tools where. He felt pretty good about what the topic was since he actually knew most of it already. With a small smile, he quietly quizzed himself as the teach brought up new tools.

As his quiz reached him, Quentin took his time to make sure every answer was right. He didn't want to rush it and possible miss an easy answer because he wasn't thorough enough. As he finished the quiz he brought it up to his teacher to hand it in.

As the next child gave their answer, Dax hesitated before writing anything on the board. He tapped a claw against the scales on the back of his hand and then pushed his glasses up.

"Uh..." he looked over his class seating chart and figured out which child this was. While he was often better with promptly remembering his older students, Freshlings often caused him little bouts of panic as he tried to remember their names. "Laurel," he said finally finding the child's name. "But why can't the plushies do anything the Vesperkittens do?" he asked gently. "Besides be soft and sometimes warm? What do the Vesperkittens have that the plushie's don't?" He was about to add and "vice versa" but didn't really want to spend the rest of class explaining what that meant.
