A long pause, steady breathing, a final drag. It was fickle but the sun was shining, broad daylight on the wet fields.

"Three and a half weeks, sweetheart. Goodnight," he said quietly, and hung up.

The girl gazed at her phone for some time and sighed before going back to the messages and photos received earlier. America went through them slowly, one by one, until she drifted off to sleep.

At some point in the night, she awoke to the muted, impassioned cry of, "Dammit Bernice!"
