Nightmares

TRIGGER WARNING: PG-13 Content

"Sleep little Dovaa, don't say a word. Momma's gonna buy you Yvazhi coins. If those Yvazhi coins don't shine, momma's gonna buy you a Kengurha Horn." the sweet, soft words of his mother lulled him half to sleep as he laid in his bed.

Slam.

"Zeth, it really isn't that big of a deal!" Paen pleaded with his friend.

"Not a big deal, Paen?! How can you even say that? Of course it is." his father's voice boomed through the household.

"Stay right here, Vye." his mother requested with a sweet, soft smile as she walked over to the door. "Zeth, calm down. Vye is trying to sleep. What's wrong?" she asked with concern as she walked to her husband's side.

Vyren, being the curious little boy he was, got up out of bed and stood in his doorway as quietly and secretly as he could, watching the scene unfold before him.

"You know Alidon's -- the shop I go to weekly for supplies?" he asked his wife.

"Of course..." she said with a tilt of her head.

"He's getting married next month." he continued.

"To a man." Paen interjected with a shake of his head. "And your husband here is freaking out because of it." he concluded, turning to put what supplies they did get on the counters.

"To be honest, Paen, I'm not sure why you aren't the least bit concerned with this. Vye is your godson. I can't believe I ever let him go and stay nights with his son. Those disgusting bastards. We are never giving that business any service again." Zeth stated, walking through the house, straight for his bedroom.

Lyrette sighed in disbelief. "That man really has no courtesy for others, does he?" she asked Paen, shaking her head.

"Vyren, how could you!? Vyren, why did you!? VYREN! VYREN!!"

Vyren shook himself awake and sat straight up in bed, his father's voice ringing in his ears. He grabbed the sides of his head and rubbed his horns a bit, coming down with his hand running through his hair. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and felt a shiver up his spine as he shook his head in disgust.

"It was just a dream. Dammit dad." he whispered to himself, looking to see if Brand and Estelle were still sleeping, which they were.

It had been a week since the party and these nightmares had come every night, sometimes multiple dreams within one. It was frightening, for Vyren never really considered his feelings for others even once. But now, he couldn't help but feel completely ashamed of the party, the Ysali Dovaa, and himself for stooping to such a low level. He couldn't stop thinking about it. His training was being put on the back burner because he had no real drive to continue this past week. His only thoughts were how he would keep his whereabouts that night a secret from Paen and ultimately, his father.

Vye laid back down and took a few deep breaths before trying once again to sleep. He almost didn't want to, but it being too early for him to actually get up forced him to lay back down and try anyway. Within the hour, after he was able to clear his mind a bit, he found himself asleep once more.

"C'mere." Jax said as he patted the seat next to him.

Vyren took the seat hesitantly, goblet in hand.

"Drink up!" the Ysali said, a mischievous smile upon his face.

Vyren did as he was told, not tasting the alcohol or anything else for that matter. Licking his lips clean, he looked at Jax, who was facing him, arm around his shoulders.

Vyren closed his eyes and felt the Ysali's lips on his once again. Then he felt a hand on his thigh as Vye wrapped his arms around Jax waist. The two lovers in a sensual embrace. The two bodies so close together made Vyren feel as though he was complete.

Suddenly, Vyren opened his eyes and realized the boy he was once on top of on the couch was no longer there, but someone was. He looked up to view his father standing above him, looking down in utter disappointment and disapproval, fists tight and eyes piercing right through him.

"Vyren, how could you!? Vyren, why did you!? VYREN! VYREN!!" his father's voice boomed and lowered pitch with every word as Vyren fell to tears on the floor in front of his father. He tried to speak but no words would escape his mouth.

"You disgusting b*****d!" his father's voice rang in his mind even though his father's mouth didn't move. Vyren looked up and his father opened his mouth to scream, flames bursting forth straight for Vyren's entire body.

"AHH!" Vyren screamed in a sweat as he sat up in his bed once again -- this time the light shown in his bedroom window. He shook uncontrollably and his breathing was rapid. He could hear his heart beat in his ears it seemed to pound so hard.

Brand and Estelle, concerned little pets that they were, floated about him in concern. Vyren could not even deal with the way his stomach felt, he instantly got up and ran for the bathroom. He lifted his head from the toilet and wiped his mouth with his weak and unsteady hand, trying to stand to the best of his ability. He made his way shakily to the sink and looked in the mirror. Sweat dripped from his forehead and down his face; all because of a nightmare. He hung his head as he gathered his composure, turning on the water and splashing it in his face. He couldn't stop thinking -- he just couldn't.

His father's approval meant everything to him. If his father disapproved -- or worse -- disowned him for what he had done, he wouldn't feel as though he has anything to live for. As he made his way back into his bedroom, he sat upon his bed and just sobbed.

"What is wrong with me? I can't do that. Why did I do that?" he whispered to himself as he clutched the side of his bed. "It was just one night. Never again and no one can ever find out." he concluded, rubbing his hands on the bed before looking around his room.

"I need to get out of here...clear my head." he said to himself, grabbing a piece of parchment and a quill to write a letter. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. What he had to do.

Where Have You Been!?

It had been nearly a month since his return from the retreat. Vyren was so glad to be back. He had that training day with Lithian but a week ago and now he found himself back in the Celestial Plane for good. He and Paen had a good reuniting since he had left on his journey with Lazarus and he was completely relieved that his feelings for Lithian had been returned. Vyren was able to relive that moment in his mind over and over again. That kiss. It was beautiful. He couldn't wait for the day when he got to see Lithian again. They had been able to see each other here and there every now and again from time to time, and Vye loved every moment with him. He made him happy, and he hoped he could do the same for Lith.

Not today, though. Today, Lithian wasn't around. Today, Vyren was to visit the Library in the Celestial Plane for Paen. He had to get some guide that Paen requested. So, there he was, back in the library once more. He hated this place. Though, with the help of Lithian last time, he was able to get everything done he needed to. Sadly, Lithian wasn't here this time. It was just him by himself, and he had far too much pride to ask for help from another person, especially someone he didn't know.

Isle by isle he searched. "Where the hell is it?" he murmured under his breath angrily as he searched book by book in the large library.

"V-Vyren?" a small voice questioned from behind the Firani.

Spinning around, Vye saw the joy appear on the face of the friend. It was Lazarus! With wide eyes he smiled. "Oh gods, Lazarus!? What are you doing here!?" he asked, shocked, surprised, and elated.

The Peisio's face gleamed with joy as he spoke, "It's the library, Vyren, hehehe. I come here quite often to study. It's quieter here than at the Fortress, to be honest. How have you been?" he asked, curiously.

The only thing that flashed before Vyren's eyes were his times with Lithian the past few months since their last meeting during his retreat. Vyren's cheeks blushed a slight red with the thought. "Well, I've been pretty damn good. Training all the time, you know, the usual. How about you?" he asked, to divert the attention from his thoughts shown upon his cheeks.

Lazarus caught wind of the boy's slight embarrassment and wondered what it was to cause the Firani to blush. He was such a hardened soul when they met upon Serenia the last time. Maybe something had softened him up? He pushed his curiosities aside and smiled. "Well, I'm glad to hear you've been well. I, too, have been studying and training. I've gone back out to Serenia again since our trip. It was relaxing and peaceful, this time. No dragons, this time it was more for the healing properties of some of the plants down there."

Vyren just smiled and nodded. "That sounds great, glad that you're doing well also." he said. The room fell silent for a moment.

"I-I've missed you. You and I made a great team out there last time." Lazarus stated, a blush appearing upon the light-skinned boy.

Vyren's eyes widened quickly and he turned his gaze from the boy. He cleared his throat and spoke, "W-well, yeah, we were great out there. We should, umm...do it again sometime." he said, running a hand through his hair.

The Peisio nodded in agreement but said nothing.

"So, yeah, umm..." Vyren babbled. He cleared his throat and continued. "Well, have you had any adventures like ours recently?" he asked.

"No, nothing nearly as exciting anyway. The only reason I've been to the lower worlds recently was to study some plants used in healing potions my father was talking about. So, mostly I've delved into schoolwork more than anything else." he replied. "What about you?" he asked.

Once more, when the question was asked, Lithian came to mind. Vyren chuckled a bit with the thought and decided to speak up. "Well, nothing as adventurous. I was almost killed by Peisio dragons once in that time. But my friend Lithian saved me. And we've studied together a little bit since then too. But otherwise nothing too adventurous, hah." he said, setting his hand on his sheathed dagger.

The Peisio's eyes widened. Almost died!? "Y-you nearly died? That's...umm...crazy...b-but I'm glad you're safe. Thanks to your friend." he said, almost feeling torn at the same time because someone else had had a nearly similar experience with Vyren as he had all those months ago. "I'm also really glad that you're safe from the Mara invasions. Those took their toll on the city, terribly. My family helped out best we could by aiding in the war effort. Taking in the wounded and sick for healing. It was a huge ordeal. But I'm glad it's over and out of the Plane now." he said, trying to change the subject away from this 'Lithian' character Vye spoke of.

"Y-yeah...I'm glad to see you doing alright. Paen fought in the war effort. I stayed relatively away from it for the most part. I wanted to go out and fight, but I wasn't able to be of much help. I cared for the home in Paen's absence, though." he said, rather disappointed that he couldn't get out there and fight as well. But, as the Peisio stated, the war was over, and Vye realized there was no changing the past.

With that, the two spoke and reminisced on their times together down in the lower worlds, just bonding over what they were doing with life as of now, and as best they could, stayed away from the subject of Lithian.

By the end of their day together, Vyren felt as though he and Lazarus were closer than ever. But Lithian was still extremely important to him. In fact, his feelings for Lithian grew each time they were together, but Lazarus took away the loneliness and he felt happy whenever he was with him. Both men were beautiful, helpful, had saved his life at one time or another, and Peisio Dovaa.

It was at this time, Vyren decided to make a clear decision. He insisted he and Lithian meet again and decided to plan a special date for the two of them.

Meeting Marcus

Time, it passed so quickly it seemed. Before he could even recount what had happened the past few months, it was time for him to turn in the orbs to Master Marcus Ysaride.

The Firani gathered the appropriate orbs into a pouch and tucked them inside his vest pocket. He fitted himself with his dagger belt and looked himself over in the mirror once more. He ran a hand through his hair as he often did whilst looking himself over in the mirror and looked over at Brand and Estelle, the two Fae Dragons who had been his pets since he was young as they wrestled together on his bed. He also looked at the three dolls he had gotten a few years ago from an old festival he attended that were nestled on a shelf above the bed. The Witch's Revenge, Moon Rabbit, and Crow's Blessing dolls, which were all covered in dust.

Those were just a few of the many memories he had of his childhood. Now, he wasn't a child anymore. It was time to become an officially recognized Expert within the Dovaa community, and to do so, he had to meet with Master Ysaride and turn in his orbs.

It did not take him long to reach the Celestial Fortress where Marcus lived. This was his time to prove himself as a capable Adept.

Vyren knocked twice before the voice called to him to enter. He opened the door and there stood the large Peisio Dovaa in front of him.

"Welcome, Vyren. You've returned after all these years to turn in another set of orbs, I presume."

Vyren nodded, a strong look on his face. "Yes sir, I have brought you three Peisio orbs and two Kiandri orbs. I hope that will suffice," he said, handing the pouch full of orbs to Marcus.

"Well done, young Firani. Beating a Peisio is tough enough for any skilled battler. But being a Firani and defeating not one, but three? Your skill must be higher than I anticipate," Marcus stated with a smile growing upon his lips. "Good. Show me your fire, Firani."

Vyren nodded, stood back, and took a few deep breaths with closed eyes before beginning. Upon the final breath, smoke escaped his nostrils as he exhaled. With bright red eyes, he straightened up and crouched down low into a martial art stance before showing off his form. Punching and kicking flames as well as spouting them from his mouth now and again. When the form was over, Vyren stood up straight and snapped a fireball into existence in the palm of his hand.

"Impressive, Vyren. You've learned quite a lot. I'm proud to state that you've surpassed my expectations and are now able to consider yourself an Expert within the community. Congratulations."

Vyren closed his palm, the fireball being extinguished instantly within. With a grand smile upon his face, he spoke and bowed. "Thank you, Master Ysaride. It means more to me than you will ever know to finally be considered an Expert,"

With that, the two exchanged goodbyes and Vyren was able to leave the confines of the fortress with a new sense of accomplishment, hope, and a rejuvenated confidence.

The Ysali Dovaa

Vyren
Sexuality has never been an easy subject for Vyren. Since childhood, his father made his opinions on anyone who deviated from the ‘standard’ of a man and a woman together, and that prejudice has affected not only Vyren’s attitude towards others, but towards himself as he has grown and cast a negative light on the development of his own feelings. Over the years, however, Vyren has been finding his way—from an uncertain fling, to a serious relationship with a young man that ended prematurely, and now, to the development of new feelings for a close friend in his midst.

After presenting himself before Marcus and officially obtaining the prestigious rank of expert, Vyren encounters a familiar face before leaving the Celestial Plane: the ysali Jax, whom he has not seen in quite some time, but the one he still has to ‘blame’ for the initial stirring of unwanted curiosities. How does the encounter proceed? Does he avoid the ysali entirely? Speak with him? Blame him, or pretend nothing occurred between them? What sort of emotions and reflections does it stir in him, and do any of these affect decisions or thoughts he might have in regard to his feelings for Lazarus?

Overjoyed about obtaining his rank, Vyren began to leave the Fortress with confidence and an abounding amount of aspiration for his future. He could just imagine himself as a master, walking the streets of the plane with large wings and an air of power. It was quite empowering for him to think about.

The boy had grown so much in his time in this realm. Without his father, Paen took on that role and succeeded with flying colors. Vyren looked up to Paen with the utmost respect. Looking back, Vyren didn't make it easy on the man to care for him. He was oftentimes distant and destructive. But Vyren learned that, over the many years of training, discipline and a calm mind will do wonders for the soul.

Now Vyren was grown, an Expert nevertheless. From his childhood years all the way until now, he had many experiences that he never thought he would. He had loved and lost, and was now coming into his own. Now, he could truly start his life and potentially make it to the title of Master one day himself. That was his newest goal.

But, of course, the growing confidence he had upon leaving the Fortress was shattered by one glance in the wrong direction. With wide eyes, there he stood. Was that...Jax? His head couldn't have darted away any faster in another direction. His heart began to race and his strides lengthened. Did he see him? Did they actually make eye contact? Just seeing that Ysali Dovaa was enough to throw off this entire year.

Flashbacks of the night, all those years ago, flooded his memory. Drinking. Partying. Jax. The bed. The next morning. His escape.

"Hey there!" Jax called as Vyren stopped dead in his tracks. "I have a question," he stated nonchalantly, walking up to meet Vyren face to face.

Vyren's eyes widened and he felt like a scared child at that moment. He hadn't felt fear or confusion like this since he was a child. He was normally so cocky, so confident. But this was definitely Jax, the man whom made him question himself early on. The anger that he felt back then towards this man...it wasn't anger anymore. It was a deep rooted sickness in the pit of his stomach that he couldn't much explain. "H-hi. O-okay," he stated quietly - which was something that happened quite rarely.

"So I'm trying to find this new class I have to take. Do you think you could help me out?"

Had Jax not recognized him? Did he not realize who he was? Vyren shook the thought and nodded, "S-sure." What was he thinking? Sure? He was going to help the man who took advantage of him all those years ago with something so minimal? All he had to do was say no or that he didn't have time. Or maybe, why the hell would you sleep with someone who was drunk!? No, none of those really came to him at the time.

Jax handed over the parchment with the information on it and Vyren's mind just swirled, he couldn't even think straight enough to truly understand what was going on. He looked at the paper and could barely read the words printed. Luckily, he was able to make out that the class was something Vyren had listened to Lazarus speak about in the past, so he knew where it was located anyway.

"Hey, thanks, I really appreciate it. I'm Jax by the way."

Vyren felt a knot in his throat. Now it was real. The boy stated his name and all Vye could do was look up into those sultry green eyes of his and remember the last time he came into contact with them. The night was such a blur, but sporadically came back in clumps over a few seconds. The Firani's eyes narrowed a moment before speaking. "I'm...Vye."

Jax didn't make any sort of connection between the two names he had stored in his brain.

That was what made Vyren even more uneasy. Jax literally had no idea who he was. Maybe the Ysali was already a little too buzzed when Vye arrived at the party? Many things crossed his mind just then. Just seeing this man threw him for a ride. Vye reminisced about things again as quickly as his mind could process it. From when he met Jax, to when he began having those nightmares of the past, to when he met Lithian and Lazarus. Then to dating Lithian and being thrown away by him at the same time. Then Lazarus being there to pick up the pieces. Although the two were just friends, Lazarus was an important aspect of his life.

Vyren simply hung his head low, something he hadn't done since his childhood, and began to walk back inside the fortress. "I-it's right down the hall and to the right," he stated in a low tone.

"Thanks so much, Vye. I appreciate it," Jax stated with a smile and wink before walking a few paces forward.

Vyren felt a chill run down his spine as he watched the man wink at him. It was disgusting, just knowing what he had done all those years ago.

Jax then spun around suddenly with the largest grin on his face. "Oh, and Vye, just so you know, that was some pretty fine a** I had that night." Jax just chuckled and winked again before spinning around.

Vyren went pale. So he did remember. Rage built up within him in that moment. Any and all sickness he was feeling turned into utter and complete horrifying rage with that one comment. With narrowed eyes, the Firani charged up behind the Ysali and grabbed his cloak, yanking him back and spinning him around, snarling fire and hot eyes staring into the orbs of green. "What the hell did you just say, a*****e?" Vyren questioned hotly, pushing the man up against the wall.

Jax simply laughed through the pain. "Humph. Hahah. You heard me. Now get off of me before I call the guards and have you thrown into the dungeon below with your pathetic a** father."

Vyren's eyes widened. How did he know about his father?

"You look surprised. You think I'd forget you? I never forget a cute face like yours. And obviously you don't remember telling me all of these little things the night we met. It's alright, it was a long time ago, but I'll never forget them. I had my fill of Firani meat and it was amazing as far as I can remember. Now...get off," Jax stated, pushing Vyren off of him a moment, the smug look still upon his face. "And don't think about doing anything you may regret later, cutie," Jax said with yet another wink and chuckle as he turned to leave towards his class.

Vyren's heart fell. With tightly clenched fists he knew Jax was right. He couldn't do anything right now. At this moment, he knew he needed to calm down and quickly before the fire burned too hot within him. He ran out of the Fortress as quickly as he could, all before the tears just overwhelmed him. He needed a break. He needed a friend. And Lazarus would know what to do to make him feel better, right?

Firani Training

"No, no, no. That's not right at all. You have to feel the fire within," Vyren scolded with a sigh.

Nelareth dug his claws into the ground. "I'm doing the best that I can," the Orakoir spoke, eyes closed and taking deep breaths.

At this point in time, Nelareth was not able to fully control his fire. With sneezes, coughs, and sometimes even breaths, the Khehora would simply blow out fire along with the air. Not only that, but when he did decide he wished to breath fire, he couldn't always produce it. That was why Vyren was here in the Sorak family's backyard. To teach this Orakoir how to breath fire...properly.

"How about a little break?" the Peisio Dovaa commented, standing up and making his way towards his charge.

Nelareth nodded with a sigh of relief. He longed for a break - almost desperately.

"Of course not! We've barely begun. We can't take a break already! C'mon Laz. What do you expect this bug to learn if we don't actually practice?" the Expert questioned in a harsh tone. Of course, he practiced day and night constantly - especially when he was younger - so his version of 'practice' wasn't like everyone elses.

"Vye, he's been at this for hours. You can't expect him to concentrate with all the yelling you're doing," Lazarus defended calmly.

"Do you want him to continue burning the place down?"

"He's never actually burned down anything fully. I'm always there to put it out. He'll learn. You just have to be more patient. Nobody is a gym rat like you, Vye. You have to realize that."

Nelareth just watched as the two bickered back and forth. He went to his large water bowl and lapped up some water quickly, knowing that this was the short amount of time he had before Vyren scolded him again.

Vyren blasted a small fireball at Nelareth's tail to get his attention.

With a howl, the Orakoir spun around quickly, whipping his tail back and snarling blue flames with hot eyes glaring at the Magescian.

A smirk grew on the Firani Dovaa's face as he flicked another fireball into existence. "You'll learn soon enough," Vyren spoke as he threw the ball towards the Khehora.

Nelareth simply batted the ball of flames with his tail, causing the fire to explode and fizzle out around it.

"Anger will also provide a good amount of firepower," Vyren stated, a devious grin still plastered on his face.

Nelareth let out a slight roar. With narrowed eyes, the Orakoir began charging at the Dovaa.

Powerful wings blasted the Dovaa upward in a couple quick swoops. Then, down he came, flying straight for the Khehora.

With a much more confident and powerful roar, Nelareth blasted out a long, large stream of bright blue fire from his mouth. It consumed Vyren's entire body as he glided right into it.

It was then that Vyren burst forth from the fiery abyss, unscathed. A simple nod and proud smile grew upon his lips as he landed safely to the ground. "Anger will definitely be your training tool."

Nelareth glared at Vyren with menacing eyes. Then, he realized that the Firani was right. With that passionate anger, he was able to streamline his fire directly. A feat he hadn't been able to do before.

to be continued...
