((The Quest - Part 1))
The letter was discovered later by Kay as she returned home from shopping. Plopping the grocery bags in the kitchen and a squirming Delphine in her playpen, she nestled back in a lounge chair and eyed the letter. Probably from one of the other guardians, she decided and slid a finger under the edge.
Pulling out the letter, her eyes skipped to the bottom of the page and then widened as she read who it was from. Chest tightening she glanced wildly over at Delphine, who was rubbing her throat in discomfort for what seemed the millionth time that day.
Dropping the letter on the coffee table, Kay went to the kitchen and extracted a bottle of potion for sore throats from amidst the groceries. Hands shaking, she added a few drops to some juice. Had they heard about this slight cold or whatever it was Delphine had? She wondered. Would they take her away? Surely not?
Delphine wrinkled her nose as she was handed the juice. Orange. Definately not her favourite.
Kay sighed as she managed to finally get the grumpy mishap to drink the juice. Only one way to find out. The seer wandered back to the lounge and picked up the letter once again.
She felt herself relax a little as she read the first sentences. Being chastised for Delphine's improper fountain use was alot better then the scenarios she had been thinking of.
But the worry quickly crept back in as she continued reading the spidery scrawl. She glanced up at Delphine and back down to the letter again. So it wasn't a cold after all? The seer felt slightly relieved at the fact she had noticed something was wrong and that the staff weren't going to take Delphine. The knot in her stomach re-appeared; - well not unless she couldn't help Delphine. She must!
After re-reading the letter again and letting out a deep sigh, Kay let it fall from her hand onto the lounge as she knelt down on the floor next to the playpen.
Delphine let out a disgruntled huff as she rubbed her spines back and forth across the playpen bars. She was itchy and sore and above all tired! She hadn't been able to sleep well the past few nights. Things ached and felt wrong and she could not get comfortable at all, no matter how many different sleeping positions she tried.
"Poor poor Delphine." Kay sighed as she scooped the mishap from the playpen and settled her on her lap. She managed to get a hold on one of Delphine's arms and inspected the spines on it carefully.
Now that she looked closely she could see that they were somewhat different looking than normal. She poked it gently and then apologised profusely when Delphine let out a wail.
With a sniffle Delphi pulled her arm away and tucked it close to her. That had hurt! Maybe even more than the time Cato had pulled at her fins. She began to start crying again. It wasn't faa~aaiir, why did all thses bad things happen to her?
Kay patted her head, unsure of wether to even give Delphine a hug now that she was so sore, and made gentle shushing noises. She noted the tone of the cries and decided at this point it was more tiredness then pain that was upsetting poor Delphi and so caried the still snuffling mishap to her room and tucked her in.
Delphine squirmed under the blankets. Didn't her mother understand? She couldn't sleep! Everything was to uncomfortable.
The seer sighed as she watched Delphine toss and turn, well at the least she could give her something to help her charge sleep, while she figured out what to do about the problem.
She retunred to the room a few moments later with another bottle, milk this time, with a few soothing herbs in it that she herself took when she had trouble sleeping at night.
"Goodnight Delphine." She soothed as the fish-kitty's eyes slowly drooped shut.
As she washed out the bottle in the kitchen sink, Kay mused on the fact that Delphine's behaviour somewhat seemed to reflect what happenned to children when their teeth grew in. In a way, she decided, it was rather similar, but with Delphine growing in fins instead. Perhaps that was it?
The bottled was dropped onto the draining board. Maybe looking up what to do for a teething baby might give her some clues? At any rate it was a start!
