            Choosing My Way

Ara had slept almost the whole way back to the Celestial Planes. It had not been a peaceful rest either. Talking to her adopted mother about her past had brought back painful memories. Memories that were very vague but there. She had been just a baby. Maybe her so called memories were fake. Ones that she thought she had because of all the stories she’d heard others telling. She sat in her room, brooding over the prospect of having to choose her clan. What should she do? She wasn’t all too sure. Would she go with her adopted parents clan or her birth parents clan?

Ara shuddered at the thought of being connected to her father in that way. She glanced in her dresser mirror and looked at herself, trying to imagine what others must think when they saw her eyes, her horns. She lifted her hand up to run her fingers over her butterfly like horns. Would they change as she grew older? Shaking her head, Ara rummaged through a few trinkets she had left of her mother’s; a couple of silver chain necklaces, one was adorned with a gray jewel that looked like it swirled with captured wind.

“Wind..” Araceli said under her breath. Her mother and father’s clan. Ayrala. Should she choose it? Her horns fluttered at the prospect. It was in her blood. The Peisio clan, her adopted parents clan, had been so kind of her though. What better way to repay the favor than to join them? She clutched the jewelry in her hand, wishing that she had regular horns. Oh what fun it would be to decorate them. For now, however, she fastened them around her neck, quickly hiding them down under her boa and shirt.

The wind blew in from her open window, bringing with it the scent of clean air. Her boa fluttered in the wind and Ara closed her eyes, loving the sensation of the wind flowing over her skin. There it was. That likeness with the wind. She opened her eyes and stared at her reflection. Was her heart really in to becoming Peisio? She fiddled with the jewel, that looked like a dragon eye, attached to her top. A present from her adopted mother. She would always cherish her adopted family and the clan they came from. Her hand closed over the jewel as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I think I’ve decided.” She said to herself as she opened her eyes, nodding at her reflection.

Ara hurried down the stairs and out of the house. Niyol was visiting a friend but Araceli could not wait to tell her what she had decided. She quickly ran to the house her mom was at, boa trailing in the wind behind her. She laughed out loud, knowing she had made the right choice. She was running so fast that she could stop when she saw her mom standing the streets, watching Ara as she flew down them as quick as she could.

“Ara! Is everything alright?” Niyol asked as her daughter flew into her arms.

“Yes. Yes, yes!” Araceli pulled back and looked up at her mom. “I’ve decided to go with my birth mother’s clan; Ayrala.” She frowned as she realized that she was telling her mom that she would not be part of her clan. “I...hope that’s alright.” Ara bit her lower lip, worried now that Niyol might regect her.

“Oh hunny, that’s great!” Niyol beamed down at Araceli and then grabbed her up in a huge hug.

            Meta Part 1

I was forced into this battle between the three races. It was scary at first. Who am I kidding? I was frightened the whole time. Mom and dad helped out the injured while I went out and fought a monster. I met an old Drakein that seemed to be blind. He was nice. I had to part ways with him when I went to fight that monster. It makes me shudder to think of it. It got away too.

            Family Meet Up

Araceli let out a deep sigh as she walked back into the camp she’d left behind with Toki. The Dovaa girl had traveled back through the tunnel to find that Toki had already left. With a defeated sigh she had headed back through the desert and to the Dovaa camp. Her eyes teared up as she remembered what she had seen in the caves deep below the surface. She had never seen so many bodies before. The images would forever be burned into her mind. Ara swiped at her eyes before the tears could break free and fall down her face. No reason to let others see her weakness. She acted tough but Ara was still just a kid in the eyes of most adults.

Lost in her thoughts as she was, Araceli didn’t hear her name being called at first. As the sounds slowly intruded into her consciousness Ara’s eyes widened. Was Toki back? She wondered as she finally looked around. “Ara, hunny!” A familiar voice called out. “There you are!” Her mom shouted. Ara’s face lit up as she saw her mom standing outside the medical tent. Tears threatened to fall from her eyes yet again. She took off running and did not stop until she was in her mom’s arms, being held tightly by the woman that was now raising her.

Seconds later, her father emerged from the tent, sweat stained his clothes and he looked exhausted. “Ara.” He said on a relieved sigh. “When the fighting started, we had worried you’d gotten caught up in it.” The pain and fear was apparent in Rhett’s voice as he bent and hugged his daughter tightly.

“Ah! But I did go and fight.” Araceli said as she pulled away from her parents. The frowns that creased her parent’s faces made her bite her lip. Reluctant, she now wondered if she should tell her parents everything that had happened. She clenched her fists and decided that the truth would be best.

“I was wandering around the camp when I met an old Drakein.” Ara couldn’t help but start out with her having met Toki. Maybe if they knew she’d not been alone, they wouldn’t worry about the events in the cave as much. “He protected me from the sand storm and then we traveled through the desert with the leaders.” Ara took a deep breath, anxious to continue on with her tale. She recounted everything that happened between the then and having to go off to fight Beta. Frowning at the memory of the pure blood Oblivionite helping the hybrid out of the cage. That just didn’t seem right. Why would they both act like that? It was a forbidden thing between them.

“I went off from Toki and fought a monster.” Araceli shuddered as she remembered the mashed together creature. “She looked like she had been a drakein at one point but there were so many different creatures she was mixed up with that it was hard to tell.” She finished up by telling them that she hadn’t been able to find Toki and so had headed back to the camp to find them.

“Oh Ara...” Her mother looked as if she was about to cry as she hugged her. “I’m so sorry I brought you into this hunny.” Niyol said as she pulled back to look her daughter in the face.

“It’s ok. Really.” Araceli said as she pulled away from her parents. “And look, I actually managed to use my magic a bit.” She smiled as she held out her palm and a little whirlwind began to form in it. “It needs work, though.” Ara said as she closed her fist and it disappeared. “Are we going home?” Her last question was hopeful as she looked up at her father.

Rhett nodded. “Yes. We’re done here. For now.” The last was said on a frown and Ara knew that things were not really finished with this small battle. Something was going to happen and she wasn’t sure what it would be.
