Ara slowly awoke to the feel of hot breath on her cheek. She groaned and opened her eyes slowly. She let out a scream as she saw a dragon snout up close. Surprised, the dragon jumped back, growling. “Go away!” Araceli yelled at the baby dragon. What was it? The time that all baby dragons hatched? When the dragon didn’t listen to her, Ara rose from the ground, wiping the spit from the dragon off of her cheek. She started to slowly back away from the dragon, hoping that it wouldn’t follow her. No luck there, though. With each step Ara took back, the dragon stepped forward. Arceli was done with hunting for now and wanted nothing more to do with this dragon. Why wouldn’t it leave her alone?
“I said go away beast!” She yelled yet again at the dragon. This time, when she was done, she swiveled around and took off running. The draon’s foot falls could be heard behind her. Ara cursed as she looked back behind her and saw the dragon bounding after her. “No, no, no, no, no.” She mumbled to herself as she brought her arms up to shield her face from low hanging branches and the tall brush that inhabited the forest. Small cuts and scratches formed on her arms from the smaller of the branches.
She looked back again. The dragon was catching up with her and she was surely lost now. Just as Ara brought her attention back to the path in front of her she came to a steep hillside. Too late she realized what was in front of her. She tried to switch her direction but her feet slipped out from under her and she went rolling down the hill. She landed at the bottom with a hard thud and just laid on her back, waiting for the dragon to catch up to her and tear her to shreds. When that didn’t happen she opened her eyes and the dragon was gone. She pushed herself up and groaned at the pain that ran through her body. She would be bruised tomorrow. She was sure of it.
