Okay maybe this is just me, but aren't letters generally only a few hundred? Mine usually come out between 250-500... I don't know, maybe I'm being to critical with the length of these but 800 words on a letter sounds super long, more like a speech.

A letter can be written at any length depending on the writer. The reason the word count for this contest is so high is because it's being used as a literary exercise. If you wish to participate then I wish you luck!
