"Where is Lake Amafel?" Eanah asked, the tail end of her question lost in a yawn. Leyn had woken her frightfully early for this dreadful winter festival, and as they boarded the unmarked ferry, she still had no idea where they were heading.

"Serenia," her tutor sighed. "It's supposed to be very beautiful."

Eanah snorted. "Nothing on Serenia is beautiful. It is all garish and bright, and it hurts my eyes."

"Well, shut up and rest them, at least for now."

The girl chuckled then, surprisingly, did as she was told.

* * *

When she woke again, the ship was docking in an oddly subdued port. The surrounding area was still bright, but it lacked the multitude of shifts in grays that Eanah perceived as, well, ugly. As far as she was concerned, everything was white. She wasn't that far off.

Eanah poked her booted toe at a hard-packed mound of snow as she disembarked. She looked up at the booths, brushing off her dress and briefly pressing her fingers to the scepter under her cloak.

The invitation Leyn had received had said no fighting, but the girl refused to be defenseless now that she didn't have to be. With a glance at the other Oblivionite, she headed into the crowd, her hands folded in front of her and her empty sockets cast largely at the ground. So many people. So many smelly, obnoxious people. Soudana help her.

A flash of pale skin and somewhat familiar bright hair caught her gaze and she turned, standing up straighter when she saw Kadryn and some Dovaa having a cheerful conversation. Or at least one of them was cheerful. She moved closer, Leyn following, and inclined her head at the pair.

Kadryn was rather weird-ed out.. How could Maslin not be a Dovaa? He had the horns, the scales, the coloring... though his orange coloring was more Orderite than Dovaa, there were blonde Dovaa's so why not a pale orange?
".. Not a Dovaa? What do you mean? You... look like one?" Kadryn asked hesitantly; she had seen his mood sour a bit as she had been nattering on at him, had she offended him? Maybe he was easily offended? What a curious person! Kadryn really wanted to know how one could look like a Dovaa and yet not be one....
Then she saw Eanah slip towards her and nod at her. There was a taller Oblivionite behind her; guess Eanah really is a lady! After all, she talked so elegantly, wore dresses (all of the two times Kadryn had met seen her) and had a body guard... that tall Oblivionite was a body guard right?

"Eanah!" Kadryn waved and grinned at the quiet Oblivionite. Hmm, I might have to go grab more snacks, Kadryn thought.

Just then Kadryn saw a tall cloaked figure stalk behind Eanah. Cmpletely cloaked, it was impossible to tell what race the figure was. It caught Kadryn's eye for a second; no one else was that bundled up. But she quickly brought her attention back to Maslin and Eanah, she had people to talk to and entertain, so no chasing after mysterious bundled up persons!

Maslin was starting to wonder if Kadryn was too innocent for her own good. Did she simply not know what hybrids were? Did her family keep that aspect of the war a secret from her, speaking only in hushed tones mysteriously about those who were banished. It was puzzling and yet if she didn't know than she wouldn't care and Maslin was all for avoiding the arguments that came with his lineage. Safe zone or not he didn't think the festival would go well for him if people fussing about preserving their bloodlines and traitors and the like.

The young boy was ripped from his musings as Kadryn called out to someone. Well... that was curious, it seemed Kadryn really didn't care for conventional politics and what they said about who your acquaintances should be. Maslin approved of this, conventional politics could suck a dragon's toe. Kadryn was.. she was strange but for the moment Maslin had her tucked away in the ' actually a decent and interesting person.' portion of his mind.

"How do you know her?" he asked curiously as she shifted so he could both watch the oblivionite's approach and Kadryn at the same time.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 27, 2012 2:49 pm

"Hello Kadryn," Eanah began. She stopped as far away from the pair as she could while still seeming sociable and folded her hands in front of her, directing her attention toward the other boy. "Hello." She was almost certain she had heard Kadryn say something about this pale child not being a Dovaa, and at first she felt a bit threatened at the thought of making nice with two Orderites instead of just one, at least until she got a good look at him. Horns. If he wasn't a Dovaa, there was only one other thing he could be. A hybrid. An abomination.

Suddenly her present company seemed a great deal more interesting. Eanah's empty eyes grew slightly wider and she took a half step forward, only temporarily ceasing her staring when Leyn put a warning hand on her shoulder. This was no Oblivionite halfling, thankfully. That fact was the only thing keeping her from assaulting the boy with a barrage of personal and rather insulting questions. She unconsciously moved closer again, straining for a better look, and when her tutor pulled her away this time, the back of her head smacked against his sternum and her arms whipped forward as she fought to pull away. Somehow, her flailing still managed to look kind of elegant. Eanah huffed faintly, casting a look of disgust up at the older boy.

"This is Leyn. He helps me with my training." She didn't need to add that she found him very annoying sometimes.

Kadryn was amused by Eanah's antics. She kept trying to approach but the tall boy behind her kept pulling her away... rather like how Uncle Tarlon used to try to stop her from eating the fresh snacks he baked when she was younger. The tone Eanah introduced Leyn with made Kadryn smile; rather like how some of her class mates had introduced annoying older brothers! A trainer at that young of an age? She wondered why do the oblivionites leave the training to young people. Doesn't she have an adult to teach her?
Kadryn turned to Maslin and addressed his question.
"We meet a while back when I was out hunting up dyes for my paints. I tried to stalk her for practice on sneaking but ended up falling into the river. It ruined my paints so we had a paint battle! It was fun and messy, which made it even better! She won cause she hit me more times than I hit her." Kadryn grinned, that had been a fun afternoon. Next time she'd have to see if Eanah wanted to spar; no real weapons, but with fists. She could use some practice against different techniques and people....
"I answered your question, answer mine. How can you be a dovaa and yet not be a dovaa? I can't seem to think of a way... You certainly look like a dovaa." She cocked her head to the side, hoping he wouldn't get to upset.

Her Uncle Tarlon snuck up behind the group. Surprisingly quiet for such a large barbarian, he could be as silent as falling snow when he wanted too. He laid a plate of fresh steaming hot pastries and two more cups of hot apple cider. " 'Ere ye go li'l ones. Grab a chair, yous two. No sense in a standin' about. And Kady, don' press tah li'l feller. If he don' want tah tell, he don' have to." He smiled at Maslin as he ruffled Kadryn's hair before heading back to his kitchen.

Maslin had nodded in response to the oblivionite girl's hello, his mouth at the time being occupied by another bite of baked good. Had she been there his mother would have had fits about his manners but the young boy doubted the other children cared. He wasn't quite sure what to make of her.. mentor's refusal to let her come close. On one hand the fair haired hybrid was sure his presence caused it, on the other Eanah wasn't being stopped from talking to him so that was something. Still,Leyn wasn't getting a polite head nod unless he made some gesture first.

Kadryn he could imagine having a paint fight, she seemed that sort of girl, all energy and excitement and spontaneous ideas. how she had roped Eanah into such a thing Maslin had no clue. Maybe.. maybe she was just odd and she could make people do things they normally didn't. That was probably it , he determined as the girl's uncle made a brief reappearance with more edibles and an attempt to save him from interrogation.

Maslin sighed a little as he prepared to answer the question anyways. Kadryn probably wouldn't let it rest and it looked like Eanah had him figured out anyways. At least he thought so, oblivionite's were so hard for him to read.

" I look like a Dovaa because my father was one. I'm not a dovaa because my mother is an orderite. No you can't see my wings." The last part was added because on the odd occasion his peers didn't start taunting him or edging away uncomfortably they got uncomfortably close and wanted to touch his wings to see if he felt different. It was weird and made him feel like some sort of animal they were poking and prodding at. As he aged this became even more awkward and his body shyness became more intense.

The red-eyed Orderite flew low to the ground, the toes of his boots just barely avoiding the snow, as he weaved through the crowd of the festival. He'd gotten a little cup of hot cider when he'd first arrive, and cradled it in his gloved hands in an attempt to warm them. He normally would not be dressed so warmly, but it was absolutely frigid out here today. He wasn't much of a winter-lover, preferring warmer weather to cold, even if he did sort of enjoy being cozy and all bundled up. He pulled his scarf tighter around his neck and face, a few crystals of snow sticking to his garnet feathers. Well that just wouldn't do; he lost of a lot of body heat through those things. He should probably put them away. Thankfully, he'd grabbed his insulated boots today instead of his normal ones. As his feet settled into the snow, Cináed looked around at the crowd again. There was quite a mix of races here, but considerably fewer Oblivionites than others. He supposed that made sense.

As he took a long sip of the cider, the warm liquid warming his throat and stomach, Cináed simply wandered about. He noticed, not far away, a blue-haired Orderite talking with a Dovaa. What drew him in, though, were her eyes. They were such a dark shade of blue, though not too much darker than his own shade of red. But once he took a closer look at the boy she was talking to, the more he noticed the inconsistencies in his appearance. Sure, he had the horns and scales of a Dovaa, but he didn't have the violet eyes characteristic of a young dovaa. He didn't look old enough to have chosen his clan yet... Luckily, he'd drawn closer just in time to hear the brightly-colored boy speak. His father was a Dovaa, and his mother an Orderite? Cináed had to suppress a gasp. A hybrid? He pushed prejudiced thoughts back; the scroll had said to leave his prejudices at the river, and so he would. He sheepishly moved in a bit closer to the trio, as he noticed an Oblivionite, and glanced at them all before focusing in on the hybrid. "I-I'm terribly sorry, but I couldn't help but overhear... You're...a hybrid?" Cináed's interest was piqued, to say the least. "I assure you that I'm merely curious about you; I've...never met a hybrid before. My name is Cináed," he chirped, offering a gloved hand to the other boy. That...was a good enough introduction, right? He really hoped the boy wouldn't be offended or anything.

Having been invited to take a seat, Eanah was in the process of doing so when a second boy showed up, this one a shining example of what Eanah had assumed all of his kind were like before she had met Kadryn. She remained on her feet, her emotionless gaze fixed on this bright Orderite as he stammered over the hybrid. Couldn't help but overhear. Peh. So entitled. So rude.

"He speaks and breathes and eats just like you," Eanah muttered, spine straightening. She couldn't even begin to imagine the sorts of questions this interfering Cináed would ask. Whatever they were, she knew hers would have been much better.

The Oblivionite very deliberately turned to Leyn and the pastry he held for her. She trusted the food as little as she did the company, but surely he would know if the bun had poison inside.

Samril had wandered off from Iggy's booth and found himself just watching and walking through the Festival. It was fun to see everyone having fun. He just wished he'd spot someone he knew... There were so many younger kids running around and it made him feel a bit old. Here he was almost an Expert and surrounded by Apprentices...

He saw a glimpse of a taller form in the crowd, but when he turned it seemed to have disappeared. With a sigh, Samril decided to give in to his stomach and followed the smells of good food to some nearby stalls selling such fares. He purchased some sweet treats and glanced about. There was a group of those ever present Apprentices at a nearby table and it seemed most of the other tables at a decent distance from the group were already taken. With a mental shrug, Samril slid into a chair at the table near to where two Orderites, two Oblivionites, and a lone Dovaa sat.

The mixed group caused Samril to grin. Good to see that there were others enjoying mixed company, though it made him miss Elleth. It'd been a while since he'd seen the Oblivionite... or even Kavanna, his fellow Dovaa.

Samril glanced over the group, then blinked a bit to see the young Dovaa's eyes. A nice amber color, so Kiandri! Awesome! Though he was a bit jealous that the younger Dovaa had already chosen a clan. It had taken him forever to settle upon Kiandri, but he was very happy there!

Kadryn was a bit taken back. Maslin acted like being part Dovaa and part Orderite was a bad thing... and why would she ask to see his wings?
"Wings are wings and come in all different shapes and sizes, why would I ask to see yours?" She tilted her head to the side; "That'd be too rude. You aren't an animal on display..."
It occurred to her then that the elegant and pretty Orderite at the knife throwing booth might be like Maslin. Could the cool eyes and black bat wings mean that the man was an Oblivionite hybrid? Interesting!
Then a red haired Orderite that Kadryn had never seen before came fluttering in. Kinda random that, but who was she to complain? She'd butted into others conversations before....
Kadryn was about to ask another question but saw the new boy, Cinead was going to take over the interrogation of Maslin. Which might be good, that way any question that offended Maslin wouldn't come from her! Though she hoped Cinead wouldn't irritate Maslin too much, Kadryn didn't have to many friends that she wanted too risk losing a potential buddy as interesting as Maslin.
Deciding that she'd put Maslin in the spot long enough, she turned to Eanah instead and asked, "Hey, you came to Serenia a while back, does that mean I can travel to Soudul? Cause seeing your home would be an interesting trip! Hmm, I might have to do that!" Kadryns eyes lit up at the thought of a new unexplored land just waiting for her to visit.

Maslin was more than a little overwhelmed by the way things kept escalating. When he'd been forced to come here today he'd not expected to spend the day with so many people , most of whom seemed interested in him in some manner or another. At least none of them had gotten violent, though that may have been due to the rules. Still, he could sense the tension between Eanah and Cináed and didn't trust them not to end up brawling beyond the festivals limits or something.

So many people were talking and making statements that it was nearly confusing. Fortunately he'd grown up with a large family of traveling traders so Maslin was accustomed to situations like this. It didn't make following all the threads of conversation easy by any means but it was possible.

He declined for the moment to shake the newcomer's hand, mostly though not entirely because his were sticky with glazing and caramel.

Instead his fixed Cináed, with a disapproving stare which was as close to confrontation as Maslin ever got. " You've never met a hybrid because we're not welcome in the cities." He pointed out. " You're more likely to " he paused for a second to think of something truly unlikely " More likely to get Eanah to kiss you then I am to be allowed to live somewhere safe."

Not that Maslin disliked traveling with his family nor did he feel unsafe in their presence. It was just, even if they wanted to rent out houses in a city for the winter they couldn't. He could pass for a pure dovaa to those not looking closely but Maslin was no liar and he corrected those who made mistakes about his lineage. People might still willingly trade with his relatives but it was not without dirty looks and as he had grown older Maslin had noted that better deals occurred when customers didn't know about him.

" You can all pretend I'm normal like you but I know the truth," he grumbled bitterly. It was nice that several of the other's were being pleasant but they could afford to be, they had proper homes and lives to return to. They were privileged just by their blood and they didn't or maybe couldn't understand. Not everyone he met was rude or cruel or violent of course but there was a sort of tension about him being a hybrid that tainted every acquaintanceship. Racial politics and the war made things difficult enough as it was for people. Maslin was inclined to think that no one cared about Hybrid's fates because the rule's ought to stop them from existing, after all who would take the risk?

Out of things to say and not really wanting to start a fight Maslin shifted his gaze down to the table. He didn't want the other's pity or sympathy, he wanted people in general to stop being terrible.

The breath curled out of Rosetta's nose when she woke, like he smoke out of a dragon's snout. The fire must have gone out sometime that night. She blinked away the sleep in her golden eyes and stretched out her limbs under the warm paradise of her covers. She sat up, pulling the covers around her as she glanced around the cottage.

Her eyes passed over the shelves lined with her fathers' notes, scrolls and scripts. They grazed over the aged wooden desk, her mothers' sketches, drawings, and calligraphy spread across its worn surface. They lingered on her little nook, which was littered with sprigs, cogs, nuts and bolts, remnants from her latest project which hung on the wall proudly.

Rosetta smiled happily and sprung from her bed, ignoring the sting from the cold, and leaped to her window. She pressed her face against the glass, taking in the freshly fallen snow. Her breath fogged up the glass and she had to wipe the condensation off of the window. It was then that she noticed the neatly rolled scroll that was tacked under the windowsill.

Intrigued, Rosetta built a quaint little fire to come back to, slipped on her boots, and rushed outside. She couldn't help the gasp that escaped her lips when the frigid air hit her skin. Her wings aided her quest, pushing her the rest of the way around the cottage to the window. She reached out and snatched the scroll and fled the cold to the flickering fire and welcoming covers.

Rosetta threw a couple handfuls of kindling on the fire, set a kettle over the flames, and placed the scroll on the kitchen table. She could hardly wait to open it, but tried to contain herself until she had a decent breakfast. After a trip to the pantry, Rose had a roll on a plate and a half-full jar of honey.

She poured herself a cup of tea and bit into her roll, breaking the seal to the scroll. A quick trip to the pantry yielded a roll and a jar of honey. After her tea was poured, her pastry was covered in honey, and her prayers were offered, Rose broke the seal of the scroll and took a bite of her breakfast. Her amber eyes widened as she got further down the curling parchment.

A winter festival! What a splendid idea! It would be a bit of a trek to the lake, but she was too excited about it to really mind. She had planned to spend the day doing chores and studying, but now visions of ice-skating, merchant booths, cafe tables, and ice sculpture-carving filled her mind. And once she finished her tea, Rosetta, garbed in her traveling cloak, brushed away her bed head, scrubbed away her morning breath, grabbed her bag of coins, and locked up the cottage.

The journey through the snow-covered woods seemed to pass by much quicker when she was thinking of what she would do first. The soft crunching of the snow under her boots and the occasional rustle of her wings readjusting on her back were the only sounds that disturbed the crisp silence that blanketed her walk. With her mind elsewhere, she walked and walked until she caught some if the delicious smells drifting toward her. She hurried to clear through the woods.

A gasp escaped her when she caught sight of all of the people that were gathered around the lake. And there were lots of different races there, just like the scroll had mentioned. And no one was fighting! Rosetta drifted through the crowd, looking at all of the booths she passed by, until she came across the lake itself.

The beautiful glittering surface of the lake was dotted with other people skating atop it. She quickly decided she wanted to take part in that first, that the other things could wait. Rose paid the fare for a pair of skates and tied them tightly, stepping onto the ice.

Her favorite activity growing up was skating, and she only got to do it this time of year. She had gotten progressively better at it, and now it came to her as easily as breathing. She glided across the ice gracefully, circling around with the others. Soon her skates were carving twisting patterns in the lake surface that involved lifting her skates and moving them closer together then farther apart. Rosetta was content just watching the people skate around her.

When a snippy remark was directed at him from the Oblivionite to his side, Cináed cast a look at her. At first glance, she was fairly fierce-looking, with her scowl and dark sockets for eyes, but as he looked closer, the older girl was actually rather pretty. But it was seriously undermined by her snotty attitude, which only made Cináed frown. He largely ignored her comment, turning instead back to the hybrid. He noticed that there was another Orderite in the group as well, but she seemed unconcerned with him. So, not feeling like he needed to acknowledge her at the moment, he listened to what Maslin had to say.

The Orderite's expression faded into one of slightly confused contemplation, and he took a small step back. The things this other boy was saying were quite awkward and depressing; he hadn't meant to make him feel bad, but he supposed that Maslin might simply be sensitive about his blood status. Cináed tried to offer a friendly smile, eyebrows lifting at the center of his forehead as he fidgetted awkwardly. "Ah, well, I apologize if I've offended you," he murmured, glancing at Eanah again. He knew that hybrids were a sensitive topic, but he was merely curious about them because Masling was right: they were not generally welcome in cities, but he thought himself to be generally accepting. Sure, he had a little thing against Oblivionites, but that was only because the majority of the ones he'd met had been abrasive and rude. "I assure you I was only intrigued, and I didn't mean to get on your bad side." He shifted his weight to his other foot, shivering slightly.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 11, 2013 11:46 am

Eanah took a bite of the pastry Leyn handed her, frowning as she chewed, but not because of the taste. She had said her piece, and while she was no longer content with a good percentage of the company she kept, she had promised not to fight here today and she would keep that promise. She waited until she had swallowed before answering Kadryn, her voice low and clipped when she finally did.

"Yes. You may visit Soudul whenever you choose as far as I know. As long as there is nothing more... personal... keeping you away." She glanced furtively at the adults bustling around the booth. Sure, they had given her food and seemed genial enough, but perhaps they were strict about keeping the girl away from people they deemed riff-raff. "The dockside towns are home to all sorts of people. No one would look at you twice until you moved in toward the middle of the continent." She had experienced something similar on Serenia and Ayr as well. Those sorts of cities were bustling and dirty; a mess. She supposed that way of living was exciting for someone, but she preferred the quiet.

Eanah tried very hard to ignore the hybrid's completely inane comment, taking another bite of her food instead, staring at the steam that billowed from it as if it was the most interesting steam she had ever seen. The more she thought about what Maslin had said, the more it irked her. She didn't think about relationships very often, but she did know that she had no intention of ever displaying the sort of weakness that would get her into one, and even if she was someday coerced into feeling such emotions, they would not be directed at some Orderite. She would never betray her people so thoroughly.

With a shake of her head, the girl placed her food back on its plate. It was time to go.

Several rather large males from all of the respective races began to circulate the festival, calling out a message to all.

"Dawn's approaching! Once the sun's is up we'll be cleaning up the Festival area, so buy the last few items and food while you can! Those of you who have participated in the contests, the judging is done and is being announced over by the lake!
Be careful on your way home, there are still Dragons about and they will be more active one the sun's risen! We hope you have enjoyed this Festival and thank you for behaving civilly and taking your fights elsewhere! "

Please post a closing post for your characters and I hope you had fun playing.
These people have met the 500 word requirement and may include this in their RP requirements. ::
Kadryn; Samril; Ekundayo; Maslin; Elleth; Ismiril; Kavanna; Eanah; Cináed; Rosetta

As dawn began to paint the skies a pale pink, the tall cloaked figure turned around and took one last look at the large and odd gathering before silently vanishing into the snowy forest. This was an odd occurrence, all three races in one place? If they were willing to set aside their hatred for one night, perhaps true peace could finally be found and her people could safely approach them...
"We will see if they are ready for us to meet soon enough," Her soft husky voice softly broke the snow filled silence as she walked away.
