Halfers? - Yaholo & Zuri

Today I met another half breed. He isn't the races I am, but it was still nice to talk to him. I always find it so interesting to talk
to other half breeds and find out what their lives are like. Hopefully we meet again, and next time he can tell me about how
        his parents met!

Journal 6

"Oh Daddy, if you could only see me now..." she whispered as she laid in bed wrapped in her furs. Yes it was all hers, well hers and Biroki's, but still hers. This was her house, a house where she would grow old with Biroki in, a house where hopefully one day they would have a family of their own. She closed her eyes again, well aware that she should be getting up soon. Biroki had already gone out for the day, and she just had a few more things to pick up from her mother's house. Even though she knew that Adwoa was sad to see her go, her mother was happy for her. Plus she was sure that Adwoa was happy to have the space back, even if she wouldn't say so herself.

Belle bleated and pushed her head against Zuri's feet, causing the hybrid to sigh. "I'm up, I'm up." she said opening her eyes once more and sitting up in her bed. She was sure that Belle was hungry, after all neither of them had ate yet and Zuri could hear her stomach rumbling with hunger. She stretched her legs and arms outwards before standing and scratching Belle on the head. That was another thing she wanted, another pet, but not right away. Maybe when she became pregnant? That way the animal could grow up with her and Biroki's children.

As she walked towards the kitchen where she had food for both herself and Belle she thought on that. Her and Brioki's children... Sure they had kind of talked about having a family, and isn't wasn't like they weren't doing the steps to get them. She blushed at the thought, no they were doing plenty of that all right. Laughing to herself she put a little some food in Belle's bowel and grabbed a piece of fruit for herself. But were the two of them really ready to be parents? They loved each other dearly, that much anyone could tell, but that didn't mean that they would make good parents. She looked down at Belle, she had kind of raised Belle right? Was that an indicator that she would be a good mother? No, raising a companion wasn't anything like raising a kid. Kids talked, and weren't as obedient as pets were, they had minds of their own and often did things they weren't allowed to. The good news was that she would only be having one, and than maybe waiting a few years for another. She had seen what her father went through with her and the twins. It was pretty bad sometimes, but than again he was alone in raising the three of them. She wasn't alone, she had her wonderful husband to help her raise their child.

She kept forgetting that it wouldn't be as hard as her father must have had it. Sure he never complained, but she knew that her and her siblings weren't always the easiest children to care for. They didn't always listen, and than there the fights that both her and her sister got into protecting their brother. Thinking back her father had it really hard, but he never complained. She hoped that she would be like that, able to take the good with the bad and always keep a smile on her face in front of her child. She took another bite of the fruit while she walked to the front of their house and sat down. The fact that she wouldn't be alone in raising her child made her happy, gave her hope that it wouldn't be all that bad. After all there would be one child and two parents. She could teach their child to be tough, to stand up for themselves no matter what. She could teach them that it is important to be yourself at all times and not to be ashamed of it. Biroki could teach them about the wonders of the world, the beauty that he had began to show her but her view on the world was already a little jaded. Their child wouldn't see it that way, they would be shelter and see only the wonder that Biroki did. He could teach them magic maybe? She had magic in her blood, and although she could only do one spell he could do many and her father could also do all kinds of things with magic. It only made sense that their child would have magical abilities.

As she wonder if she even wanted her child to be able to preform magic Belle came and laid down at her. She laughed and ran her hands through Belle's fur. "Do you think we are going to make good parents Belle? Are we ready? Are you ready? You do know that if we have a child they will pull on your hair. Can you handle that?" Belle blinked in response. She would miss this silence, that was one thing that Zuri was sure of. Belle blinked in response. She would miss this silence, that was one thing that Zuri was sure of. She had been around babies enough to know that they weren't ever silent for long, and even as a child she knew that she was pretty loud. But she would get use to it, she might even end up preferring the noise of her own child to the silence of being alone. "You're right Belle, we are both going to have to adjust to having a child in the house, but I'm sure that the two of us can do it. We're tougher than we look. Biroki on the other hand..." She was sure that her husband would do great. No matter what she was done thinking about this for the day. She had things to do and it wasn't like she was having a baby any time soon. She wasn't even pregnant yet. Standing back up Zuri left a note for her husband to where she would be and headed towards her mothers house to collect her belongings.

With a sigh Zuri looked over at her spear. It was covered with blood, not a single spot was clean, but thankfully none of it was hers. This was the first time that she fought not just for fun, or to practice, this time it was the real deal. This was what she had been preparing for all this time... However she never really thought the day would come. Sure she thought that she would have to fight a few times maybe, just little scuffles nothing serious. However she never thought that she would actually have to take a life. Not in her wildest nightmares had she ever killed a person. It wasn't like killing an animal, that she had no problem doing. This was different, and worse in so many ways. She could feel the life leaving the person's body as she stabbed them with the spear, hear the sound that their bones made as they broke. It was crazy, and something that she hoped she would have to do for much longer. This was was hard on her, hard on both her body and her soul. She made lives, not took them. At that thought she wondered where her daughters were. She had left them with their father and she only hoped that they were still there. She kept an eye out for any soldiers heading towards the camp they were in, but she was pretty sure they were all safe.

Zuri grabbed a clean cloth and started to clean her spear, staring into the distance she was soon lost in thought. Thinking about her daughters made her sad. They were born into such a horrible time, to be a youngling during war was not something that she wished upon and she especially hated that for her daughters. Part of her felt like she was doing them wrong by being there, that as their mother she should have kept them home safe. Even though she left them with their father they were still in dangers way, which they wouldn't have been with her at home. However her being out on the battle field was also something she needed to do. By doing that she was helping to insure that the Oban's wouldn't win and take over their lands. Her being here was her way of helping forge a better future for her girls, one in which there wouldn't be any war. She was very conflicted about what she should do, but it didn't matter much anymore. She was already there, and it wasn't like she could turn around and go home now. She just had to hope that this whole thing would be over soon.

Suddenly she realized that she had been cleaning an already clean spear and put down the cloth. She needed to go find her daughters, make sure that they were okay before the next wave of fighting happened. Although she hoped it was over and that she would be able to go home soon she knew that was likely not the case.

The two of them had never fought before. They never even had little fights, it had always been smooth sailing for the two of them. As she walked away from the tent she wondered what this meant. Now with a clear mind she realized she had zapped him with her ice magic. That she had been so mad that she let her magic loose scared her in a way. She was always in control, of herself and her surroundings, but it seemed that for the first time that wasn't the case. "What is this war doing to me..." she mused out loud. After checking on her daughters and making sure they were with someone she trusted Zuri went for a walk in the forest to try and make sense of all that had happened.

The first issue that she had to figure out was why exactly was she mad at her husband. Was it because he left the girls to fend for themselves, for that had been why she was angry at first, or was it all the things he said during their argument. In her eyes he had said that the girls weren't that important, and while she knew he didn't really feel that way he had said that and it hurt her. In her eyes there was nothing more important then Ikkio and Ikuri. Not herself, not her husband, not anyone or everyone in the world. They mattered more then anything or anyone. How could her husband not feel the same way? How could he even think for a second that their lives didn't matter more then anyone elses? Then there was also the way that he spoke to her. He screamed at her. She hadn't even raised her voice, not even once, and yet he was screaming? Not only was it not okay for him to talk to her like that, but it was also so embarrassing. People had been around, people had been watching, and still he screamed at her. How did that make them look, make her look? Bad. She was happy at least that her girls hadn't been there to see it all.

He wasn't the man she married, wasn't the man that she had fallen in love with so many years ago. She could see that he had changed and it wasn't a change that she liked. She was still the same person, the same girl, that he married, so why did he change? He was the healer of the family, the meek one. He didn't scream, didn't fight with her. No, the man that she fought with today was not her husband and it made her fell differently towards him. She didn't love him how she use to, she didn't even really want to see him or be around him. Things were changing, and she didn't know what to do about that. She wasn't going to leave him or anything, she had the girls to think about, but that spark that he ignited inside of her was fading, and fading fast.

Journal 9

It had been some time since the war had ended, and yet things were not better between her and her husband. The girls continued to grow and become beautiful young women, and it seemed that as they grew her feelings for Biroki faded. Walking through the forest and old familiar feeling was creeping up on her, the feeling of not belonging. It seemed like ages ago that she was in Zena feeling this way, feeling as if she had to come to Jauhar to find out more about herself. However although it seemed at first that she had found her home here she was starting to think otherwise. She had grown here, and she left like she would do better back in her birthplace. Better back where her father had once ruled. She would want to take the girls with her of course, let them see that part of their heritage. She wasn't sure how Biroki would feel about this, but honestly she didn't care all that much. The girls needed to know more about themselves, and traveling was a good way to do that.

Suddenly she heard something to the left. She froze. Although she had come out to think she also wanted to try and catch a radaku. If she did leave to Zena, or more when she left for Zena, she wouldn't be coming back. She had been wrong all those years ago and she wanted to be home for good. There was nothing for her here if the girls came with, so there would be no reason for her to come back. She waited patiently, not moving an inch. Finally she was rewarded by the sight of a radaku. It was alone, and pretty young. The animal was stunning, with a white coat and spots that she had never seen before. She moved as slowly as possible, taking the rope from her bag. She didn't have a proper net, which she knew would make things harder, but she was determined and she knew that she could do anything that she put her mind to. This radaku would fit in perfectly at home, blending in with the snow. She had to have him.

She didn't seem to have startled the creature, and so with a jerk of her wrists she threw the noose part towards the creatures neck. She seemed to have luck on her side because the noose went perfectly around, and when the creature jerked away in surpeised it just tightened it. The creature struggled, and she let it fight the rope until it had no more energy. She was tired by the end of it, but the creature was worse off. Slowly she pulled it in. It still fought her a little, but not much. Thankfully was small and by the time it was close to her she could wrap her arms around it and keep it contained. Now that she had a radaku the thought of going to Zena seemed better then ever. She would go tell the girls, they would leave soon.

Journal 10

As she traveled with the girls to Zena there was a lot of silence. Often the two of them were talking just to each other, or the three of them walked in silence. It was a long journey and they didn't always have things to talk about. This silence left time for Zuri to think. She thought about where they were going and where they were leaving. She hoped the girls would like Zena, it would be wonderful if they wanted to stay. She wanted to stay, she wasn't fully convinced when she left Jauhar but as she walked she became more and more convinced. The further she got away from her husband the less she felt towards him. Her feelings had already been fading since the war, but they had grown smaller and smaller over time. It had come to the point that she could go days without even thinking about him. However there were some days she did miss him, or at least the idea of him. She missed cuddling, having deep conversations like they use to. She didn't so much miss him as his companionship, companionship that she was sure that she could find elsewhere. She wasn't that old, and she thought she was pretty. There would be other's out there who would want her. Plus now she had Haimah and although he couldn't give her all the things she had gotten from Biroki, he was a better cuddler.

She felt bad though, knowing that her marriage was over and having Biroki possibly not know. She hadn't told him explicitly that she wouldn't be back, or that their relationship was over, when she left. Although she doubted it he could think that her going to Zena was just temporary, and that she would be back to work on their marriage soon. Even though she had no more feelings for him she didn't want him to be in limbo like that, waiting for something that would never happen. She wanted to give him a chance to move on. A chance to live his life however he wanted to, without her. She knew that she should tell him to his face, but she didn't ever plan on returning to Jauhar and she didn't want to ask him to come to Zena just for him to tell him that it was over. No she would write him a letter. It wasn't the best way to tell someone you didn't want to be with them, but it would have to due. It wasn't like he really cared about her anymore. If anything the letter might come as a relief to him, for all she knew he had already moved on with someone else. The thought of him having moved on made her feel better about writing to him.

That evening when they stopped to set up camp Zuri told the girls she would be back and headed away from them. She didn't want to tell them just yet about what was happening, not until she had written the letter to Biroki and she knew what she was going to say. After she could no longer see the fire her girls had built she sat against a tree and started to write. She didn't have much time, the sun was soon setting, but all she had to do was get her thoughts down on paper. Taking a deep breath she started to write down all that she felt.

      Dear Biroki,
I want to start off by telling you thank you. Thank you for all the wonderful years we spent together, and thank you for helping me create our two perfect daughters. They are spectacular and because of them I will always be thankful towards you. However with that said I don't think we should be together anymore. I no longer feel like you are the man that I married, and because of that I don't have the same kind of feelings I once had. Since the war things have just gotten worse and worse, and I don't think there is anyway for us to fix them. Jauhar is no longer my home, it's just a place that makes me feel empty. I'm going to Zena and I won't be coming back. Zena is my real home and I now know that I should have never left it. I hope that our daughters will stay with me, but I'm leaving that choice for them to make. I am saddened writing this letter, for I know we had many good times together, but I think it's for the best.
          Goodbye,
            Zuri

When she was done Zuri smiled, happy that the task was done with. Folding up the paper she stood up and returned to her daughters, putting the letter in the bag that she carried with her at all times. As soon as she could she would send the letter, and then she could put the past behind her.

The next town they visited had runners and she paid one of them to deliver the message. She would not be going back, and she didn't want one of her girls to have to tell her ex-husband should they go back. No, he would get the letter within a week and hopefully he would understand. It really didn't matter if he did, it wasn't like there was anything he could do at this point, but she did hope that he wasn't that mad. She didn't have any romantic feelings for him anymore, but they had a shared history and she hoped this wouldn't crush him too much. She knew it would crush the Biroki she once knew, but the new one she wasn't so sure about. She didn't know this new Biroki.

After sending the letter she sat her girls down that night at the camp. "Girls I have something I want to talk to you about. It's about your father and I..." They were old enough to hear the truth about her parents split, and she had rather them hear about it from her then from Biroki. Who knew what he would say to them.

Journal 11

She was starting to feel like she belonged again. Like she belonged in her own skin, and Zuri loved it. The guilt of her daughters deaths was slowly not eating away at her anymore. She was still sad, and she still missed them dearly, but she no longer felt like stoping her life was what would make things better. Instead she felt like she had to move on. She had to move forward, she had to get on with her life and stop moping around. Neither of her girls would have wanted that for her, and she was determined to get on with her life. She sold the house that her father had owned, the one that not only did she live in her whole life but also lived in with the girls while they were in Zena. It held many bad memories, including the days she spent sitting alone in it feeling depressed. No, staying there wasn't good for her health. She decided to downsize and get a place that was just hers. It was small, but she didn't need much. Just enough for her, Haimah and then her future mount. It wasn't like she planned on starting a family any time soon, or ever. One family was enough for her, and her failed marriage was not something she wanted to repeat.

She had been putting some thought into that recently, what mount she wanted to ride, and although there was a time when she thought that Haimah was the perfect mount for her she wasn't so sure anymore. Now that she was in Zena, and didn't see herself moving anytime soon, she kind of thought that she should get a Raptrix. She thought about a Mammu for a little, but they were simply to big for her. Plus Ikuri had one, so she would always think of her daughter while ridding the creature. No a Raptix was what she needed. She had gone and visited a few breeders, but so far she hadn't made a connection with any of the Raptrix she had seen. She wanted one that made her feel the same way she felt when she was with Haimah. A connection that assured her that the two of them could go into battle together and have each other's backs. She wasn't looking for just any Raptrix, but a special one. A smart one.

"Haimah you were born in the wild, and you're smarter then any other creature I've encountered." she said to her companion as she rubbed his belly. The two of them had taken to snuggling on her bed, both for warmth and for comfort. The more that she thought about it the better the idea seemed to her. Haimah was from the wild, and he was much more intelligent then any creature that was bread. Or at least she thought so. It should be the same for a Raptrix. With a smile she cuddled closer to Haimah. "That's a great idea, tomorrow we'll find out about catching us a Raptrix. But for now, good night."

User ImageSneeu was growing beautifully. He really was big for his species and it made things that much better. Sure it meant there wasn't a lot of space in their home, but that was fine. Between him and Haimah the house was always warm. It also meant that it was a little harder for Zuri to get on his back, but she was managing. It was all about learning little tricks. The saddle she had had made from the Matori man, Abioye, was no longer big enough for him. Although Zuri thought he wouldn't grow bigger then he was during that trip she was wrong, very wrong. However she could still ride him, kind of. In lieu of a saddle she placed a fur over his back and used her legs to hold on to him while also holding on to his feathers. It wasn't the safest way, but she wasn't about to stop training with him while she found someone to make him a saddle.

"Okay Sneeu. We're going to try flying together today. Come on, lets go."

She walked outside of the house, grabbing her spear and the fur she used for riding as she did so, with both Sneeu and Haimah following her outside. She didn't like to leave Haimah alone, but at least this way he could guard her house while she flew and practiced drills with Sneeu. Plus as obedient as Haimah was she could never get him to wait inside the house, even if it was much warmer in there.

"Okay, Haimah you stay guard. We shouldn't be gone for too long." She patted the raduku on the head before walking over to Sneeu and putting the fur on his back. He stood so still, patiently waiting for Zuri to mount him. This part he was good with, and walking around on land was also not an issue. She had rode both he and Haimah during her trip through Oba and Matori, however she did favor Sneeu during it. So walking wasn't an issue. It was flying that she worried about.

Mounting him with some trouble Zuri looked around. After a few seconds she increased pressure with her heels on Sneeu's body. "Up!" She commanded. He started to run and after some time he pushed off from the ground and they were in the air. It was so freeing, flying, but also terrifying. At first Zuri let him go wherever he wanted, enjoying the air in her hair and figuring out the best way to make sure she didn't fall from his back. From a distance so high she knew there was no way she would make the fall alive.

Holding her spear in her right hand Zuri spent the next few hours with Sneeu, doing drills of commands that he knew on the ground and he was slowly learning in the air. It wasn't all that different, except when it was. He got it pretty quickly though. The hardest part was the turns. Learning to stay on his back was hard enough when he took sharp turns, but holding her spear in a tight enough grip that if she hit someone it wouldn't fall to the ground was a totally different story. Twice she dropped the spear, and there wasn't even anything hitting it.

When they went to retrieve her spear for the fourth time Zuri decided to have a snack break, making something for her as well as for Haimach and Sneeu. She wondered how much easier it would've been if she decided to stick to using Haimah as her mount. They had been together longer then her and Sneeu had, and riding him was much better, but no. She felt a closer pull towards Sneeu. Towards the creature that was from the same land as she was. Maybe it wasn't fair to Haimah, he didn't chose to be born in a place riddle with bad memories for her, but either way it just felt more right to have Sneeu as her mount. Even if it was a ton harder.

When they finished their lunch time snack it was back to the air for Sneeu and Zuri, and back to guarding the house for Haimah. This time when he turned she leaned her body into his, as if she was becoming one with him. Although it felt a little silly it worked and she didn't drop her spear! Although she wished she had someone to practice with, someone else with a flying mount, she would have to do with drills in the air alone and then using dummies when it came to the ground. She needed to have her arms as strong as possible, which she could do just as well on the ground as in the air. Hopefully.

After a few more hours of flying in circles and not dropping her spear Zuri decided it was time to go back home. The sun looked like it was getting ready to set and she wanted to have dinner ready before it did. "Come on Sneeu, take us home." The raptrix barked in agreement before he started his decent towards the ground. "Thanks for being the perfect mount." she said to Sneeu as they descended, laying her head on his neck.

She was greeted by Haimach jumping about and being happy when she landed, though she was pretty sure that had something to do with the fact that he hadn't eaten in a while and he was always hungry. Honestly, between the three of them he was always the one that was the hungriest. It was crazy. He ate more then she did, more then her daughters had when they were growing. She wondered if it was his species, she had never heard of radku's eating more then other creatures, but then again she really didn't have anyone in Zena to ask. From what she knew he was the only one.

"Come on you two. Today has been a successful day, so let's go eat and rest so that we can do it all over again tomorrow."
