Skype rp with ex o ex Snoof

The bar was lit in a warm half light, the evening starting to shift from diners to drinkers but still split fairly well down the middle. At one of the circular tables is Ronan and Connor, dishes from their meal with just a few scraps left on it and full drinks next to them.

Connor: "I'm starting when you are." -raises his glass-

Ronan: "Sounds good to me."

-both take a drink, setting down the glasses- -Connor nibbles on a last little bit of food, while Ronan looks around-

Across the room, stepping down from his stool and leaving a nearly empty glass of beer behind, stumbled Gabe Knight. His footwork was shoddy, already pale skin looking clammy, and his hair a bit disheveled from running his fingers through it to keep it out of his eyes.

Gabe: -reels just as he's passing one of the circular tables- -catches himself with one hand slamming firmly on the edge, the other over his eyes while he's a bit hunched-

Ronan: -catches sight of Gabe and gives Connor a quick nudge- -his friend was better at making these sort of judgment calls than him-

Connor: -gives an annoyed look at Ronan for a moment at being interrupted eating, but it stops when he spots Gabe- -sets down his food, watching for a couple more moments to see what the man does next-

Gabe: -teeters slightly while staying in place, breathing kinda hard- -stays quiet for almost a minute without looking at either of them, keeps his eyes covered- "W-where-- where's the bathroom...?"

Connor: -doesn't even have to be nudged this time before getting up and going over to the man- "I'll go and show you over, it's not that far."

Ronan: -gives a little nod to Connor when he looks back, staying to look after the table-

Gabe: -slides his hand down to cover his mouth instead, glances tiredly at Connor and takes a moment to assess him before nodding- -follows along a bit slowly, keeping a hand out to catch himself on a wall or another table until they get there-

Connor: -takes his time making his way to the bathroom, making sure the guy can keep up, and holds open the door when they get there, waiting outside-

Gabe: -takes almost ten minutes before coming back out, looking considerably better but still exhausted; has some color back in his cheeks, washed his face, and runs his fingers through his hair to get it back to an agreeable position- -stops short when he notices Connor standing there-

Connor: -relaxes when he sees Gabe come back out- "You're looking a lot better there. Anything else you need?"

Gabe: -glances out to the rest of the bar, wipes his mouth with the back of his hand- "Feel better..." -looks back at Connor and furrows his brows, shrugs and points to the bathroom with his thumb- "Thanks. Could hardly see straight."

Connor: "Not a problem. First time coming here?"

Gabe: "Yeah, I'm not familiar with the area."

Connor: -thinks for a moment on what Ronan might be saying if he were over here- "If you want I can give you some recs, same with my friend back at the table."

Gabe: -looks skeptically at Connor then glances back to try and spot the table in question but no such luck; he didn't get a good look at either of them before- "...Yeah, wouldn't mind. Thanks." -waits for Connor to start walking and follows him back to the table-

Connor: -nods and leads Gabe back towards the table, pulling out one of the other chairs before sitting back down in his- "Quick intro, I'm Connor, that's Ronan." -points at his friend with his thumb-

Ronan: -somewhat surprised to see the other man come back with Connor, but not unhappy- "Glad to see you're looking better."

Connor: "So, what kind of stuff you interested in?"

Gabe: -stares at the offered chair for just a second before sitting- -almost reaches out to shake their hands when introductions start but pulls it back and pretends otherwise- "Gabe." -nods to Ronan, then looks back at Connor- "That's kind of broad. Are we still talking bars or what?"

Connor: "Might as well start with the bar, keep it simple-"

Ronan: "You should totally try the fish basket, it's really good-"

Connor: -groans- "Always with the ******** seafood, just eat a goddamn burger for once!" -covers his face for a moment before giving an apologetic look to Gabe- "Uh... sorry about that."

Gabe: -scoffs flatly, staring between them- "Seafood's not really my thing." -shrugs off Connor's apology- "Is the rest of the food any good here?"

Connor: "It's pretty good overall, though the smoked meats are usually the best of the bunch."

Gabe: -nods and digs through his pocket- "I'll give 'em a shot when I'm sure I won't lose 'em again." -pulls out a pack of cigarettes and taps the bottom against his palm, glances at Connor and Ronan- "Do you mind if I smoke?"

Ronan: "Sorry to say but it's a non-smoking joint here."

Connor: -takes a small sip of his drink- -he wasn't going to be the one delivering that news-

Gabe: -squints at Ronan, turns in his chair to look around for a sign and-- sure enough- "Great." -huffs and returns the pack to his pocket- "Gambino's more strict about it than Aekea."

Ronan: -shrugs- "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news."

Connor: "So what you thinking of getting to drink?" -notices Ronan side eyeing him but ignores it- -he remembered the man's earlier state just fine but he wasn't going be bringing attention back to it- "If you don't have something already."

Gabe: -shrugs and leans his arms on the table- "S'fine." -chews on the inside of his lip- "Had a lager earlier. I dunno, any beer recommendations here?"

Ronan: "The local brew the place gets is pretty good, what's the name again?"

Connor: "Hey, I can't even pronounce the thing. They bartender should know what you're talking about though."

Gabe: "Alright, I'll go grab one then." -pushes his chair back and stands, pauses and looks back with a hand on the table- "Need anything while I'm up there?"

Ronan: "We should be fine for the moment, but thanks!"

Gabe: -nods and slips back to the bar, though curves his path along the way and heads outside to have his smoke first instead-

Ronan: -watches Gabe as he goes- "Is it really okay for him to be smoking right now...?"

Connor: -shrugs- "Not our place to judge." -exasperated sigh when Ronan shoots him a look- "Look, I don't like it either but we have to respect boundaries. We don't even know him."

Ronan: -gives a sigh of his own, taking a sip- "I still don't like it."

Connor: "You don't have to, but we're bar patrons, not doctors. It's not what we're here for."

Ronan: -mimics- "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a-"

Connor: -groans and punches Ronan in the arm before he can finish, but the tension's broken and it's silently agreed to not worry about it right now-

Gabe: -takes a few minutes before coming back into view at the entrance, then beelines for the bar- -hangs there until he gets an opening to order, then keeps waiting for his drink, which takes another minute or two- -stays put standing at the bar edge once he has it, just kinda looking at it before taking one sip, glancing back at the front entrance, toward the bathrooms, then finally pulls away and heads back to the table- "Hey." -sits back down, then takes another drink-

Connor: -lifts drink in greeting- "Welcome back."

Ronan: "I heard you mention Aekea before, how long have you been in the area?"

Gabe: -slouched, back to looking idly around the bar- -lifts his brows at the question and sets the glass down- "Mm-- Not long. Week or so."

Ronan: -finds himself raising his eyebrows too, no wonder he hadn't known about not being able to smoke here- "Any sort of things you need to know about besides bars? We can give you pointers if you like."

Connor: "Ronan."

Ronan: "What?"

Connor: "You're being annoyingly helpful again." -said with a smile, so mostly a joke, but there's a grain of truth to it-

Gabe: -watches them both with outward disinterest, lifting the glass back to his lips- "Actually, yeah," -drinks- "Places to eat. Places to chill." -taps the side of his glass with a finger and states the next one flatly- "Places to work."

Ronan and Connor both look at each other, realizing they have stepped on a very sensitive subject.

Connor: -breaks the awkward pause by bringing out a pen and a scrap of paper, scribbling down a couple email addresses- "It's not much, but those are a couple acquaintances who sometimes hire for odd jobs."

Ronan: -takes a drink, thinking- "You might be able to check the markets too, sometimes they need a few extra hands. It's kind of spotty but it can work as a tide over. The main ones are here," -writes down a couple addresses-
"And here. This one's daily starting around 7 am, and this one's on Fridays at 5 pm."
-there were also the fish markets that went on each day, but he had a feeling that wasn't the kind of work Gabe would appreciate-

Gabe: -sits up straighter and leans back a little, brows furrowed, when both promptly respond with legitimate assistance- -reaches over once they finished and slides the paper closer to him, looks it over silently while his expression shifts from wary squinting to mildly impressed- "Thanks." -almost sounds disbelieving- "I'll check them out this week." -folds the paper up and pockets it, holds his glass with both hands- "What do you two do?"

Connor: "Serving in the navy. Sail the seven seas and all that." -takes a long drink- "It's where I met Ronan actually, first assignment for both of us."

Ronan: "Yep, though I've been retired for around... seven years, is it?" -Connor nods- "I'm working at the Gambino aquarium now."

Gabe: -holds his glass a little tighter and raises brows while staring at it- takes another sip, just slowly nursing his beer- "Damn. How's the aquarium?"

Ronan: "Besides having to deal with tantruming kids in and outside of the tanks, it's pretty nice. I mainly work with training the seals and sea lions, along with a lot of general stuff depending on what's needed."

Gabe: -raises his brows again and shifts a little, nods and glances at Connor- "And I guess you don't just swab decks."

Connor: "Got a bit more than that." -drinks- "I work as a petty officer and help with running the ship. It's not always easy, but I'm happy with it."

Gabe: -nods, though goes a bit quiet and directs his attention to the table and his drink again- "My, uh... my brother's a nurse around here. ER and pediatrics."

Connor: "ER? Hope to never meet him there at least."

Gabe: -scoffs and smirks wryly- "You'd recognize him right away. He's got green in his hair." -waves his fingers lazily in front of his forehead without looking up at either of them-

Ronan: "Green...?" -blinks- "Is his name Henry? If yes I think I might have met him at a crawfish boil."

Gabe: -smirk lessens a little, glances up at Ronan- "Where was that?"

Ronan: "It was a community event back in March, at Lab 305. Have you heard of it?"

Gabe: -loses the smirk entirely and squints- "You're kidding." -hangs his head and scoffs, runs a hand over his face- "Yeah, I have. Henry won't stop talking about it."

Ronan: -grins- "Small world it seems."

Connor: -sighs- "I can relate." -elbows Ronan in the arm-

Gabe: "Didn't even know it existed back in Aekea, now it's practically all I hear about. What, you taking care of one of the torsos, too?"

Ronan: "Going to be! Just waiting for the call at the time."

Connor: -looks over at Ronan- "Still have any idea when that's going to be?"

Ronan: -drinks- "Nope."

Gabe: -squints more, quirks a brow- "Maybe you can answer a question for me, then: What the hell?"

Connor: "The best I can understand is – magic." -waves his hands around in an annoyed fashion-

Ronan: "I don't totally understand the how, but mainly it's another community to be a part of, just some of the members just look a little odder than usual."

Gabe: -gives Connor a short bemused grin, then squints at the table and scratches his temple with a thumb- "More interested in the why. I know they're experiments, the girl my brother looks after told me that much, but what's the point of handing 'em out? Do they get anything out of it?"

Ronan: "From what I understand it's a way for the lab to keep them under observation while not having to keep them in house. See how they react to different situations, development, that sort of thing."

Connor: -deadpans- "Cause that's not creepy at all."

Gabe: -gestures at Connor- "Thank you." -glances back at Ronan- "Just can't wrap my head around it. The girl my brother takes care of is really resigned to it. She didn't even know why they're made." -scoffs and looks at his beer- "Guess it doesn't matter, if they're not bothered."

Ronan: -takes a drink, staring at the glass for a long moment- "To be completely honest, I'm not sure I trust the person on top. The staff members, sure, and the people involved, but the person that actually makes the raevans? I don't know." -sighs- "But if they're being made anyway, the least that can be done is making sure they go to good homes."

Connor: -watching Ronan- "Lemme guess, that started last summer."

Ronan: -shoots Connor a very clear Not Right Now look-

Gabe: -furrows his brow and stares at the table while taking a sip- -stays quiet, mulling that over, then stares pointedly between the both of them- "What happened last Summer?"

Connon: "A goddamn stupid a** "rescue mission" for the lab that sent Ronan back with broken ribs, a concussion, sprained wrist, and torn up arm. Oh, and it was in the jungle. With no trained guides." -takes a long drink, obviously pissed- -usually would respect Ronan's wishes to stay quiet but the drink has started to loosen his tongue-

Ronan: -sighs- -he wants to refute it but...- "I wanted to help, but none of us quite realized what we were getting into. It... made more than a few in the community lose faith in upper management." -rubs at the scar on his right forearm for a moment-

Gabe: -leans back in his seat, brows knit and eyes attentive- "Are you serious?" -scoffs harshly at Ronan's response and leans his arms on the table- "I should ******** hope so. What kind of s**t is that?"

Connor: -drinks- "Someone who doesn't know how to plan and is involved with too much weird crap. Oh, and doesn't care about the people involved."

Ronan: "Connor. Enough. You know that last one's pushing it."

Connor: -frustrated sigh- "What else am I supposed to think when you come back beaten half to hell?"

Ronan: "We ran into something unexpected. No one could have really dealt with it, okay." -gives his own sigh, taking a drink- "Sorry, we've... gone over this a couple times."

Gabe: -cringes, looks to the side of their table- -mutters a few expletives under his breath, rubs at his mouth, shakes his head a little -- then looks back at Ronan sternly- "Hey. How many of them were with the group?" -grimaces- "Was there a blind girl? Metal branches and s**t like wings?"

Ronan: -shakes his head- "Luckily I don't remember seeing her. She got spared that much at least. As for total amount... I think somewhere around 20 of us? Mix of raevans and humans."

Gabe: -nods and runs a hand over his face, smooths one side of his hair back- "Tch. Can't believe that s**t. Bet Henry doesn't know about it, he didn't start taking care of her til -- s**t, Spring, I guess. This year."

Ronan: "He should be glad he missed it. And honestly, I'd rather just forget about the whole thing. Nothing to be gained dwelling on it." -takes another drink, coming to the bottom of his glass-

Connor: -finishes off what he had- "You want me or you to go get the next round?"

Ronan: "I'll go get it." -walks over to the bar-

Gabe: -cringes again, takes a bigger swig of his beer- -side eyes Ronan as he leaves, then knits his brows tighter at Connor- "Awfully forgiving. Guessing he wasn't the only one beat to hell."

Connor: "I think he was one of the worst cases, but yeah, he wasn't the only one." -shakes head- "He's almost too nice at times."

Gabe: -scoffs, mumbles- "Almost?" -stares at his beer, a little over half gone, and swirls the foam around- "I'm with you on this, man. Untrustworthy s**t upstairs."

Connor: -grimaces- "Definitely. But he at least has a point with getting the raevans to good people. Better than having them rot in the lab."

Ronan: -returns with drinks in tow and hands one to Connor, who immediately takes a drink- -sits down and takes a long drink himself-

Connor: "So what's the raevan you know like?"

Gabe: -nods quietly, frowning at the table- -looks a little surprised at the question and falters- "Uh... Don't know her too well." -chews the inside of his lip, shrugs a little- "She's quiet."

Ronan: -shrug of his own- "Makes sense." -getting a nice buzz going-

Connor: -stares at the ceiling for a moment, relaxing- "What's going into your raevan again?"

Ronan: "Flying fox, and a piece of bark that bleeds."

Connor: "... I'm still not over that last part." -shudders-

Gabe: -stares kind of blankly- -squints- "What?"

Ronan: "It's the way the raevan's are created. They mix the soul of something and a fel essence." -... that sounded really creepy now that he was saying it out loud-

Connor: "Aka, crap that shouldn't exist. I still don't get it." -drinks, grimacing- "Or, more accurately, it hurts my brain."

Gabe: -squinting intensifies- -props an elbow up, rubs his temple- "Like what?" -gestures loosely at Ronan- "Besides that."

Ronan: -thinks for a moment- "Mistletoe that makes you kiss, clouds you can touch, fire that burns without fuel, that kind of stuff."

Gabe: -winces at the first one, rests his forehead in his palm- "Why--" -scoffs- "Why even mess with that? s**t, the fire could get used but they went and made a floating torso out of it?"

Connor: -throws his hands up while he looks down- "Once again, no clue. I don't understand the upper management as is."

Ronan: "Well, it's an experiment I guess, though way out of my comfort zone."

Gabe: "Yeah, I get that. For a science division, you'd think they'd be more interested in using things like that fire for, I dunno, research into a perpetual energy source. Waste of ********' time..." -trails off- -frowns and huffs quietly, takes a short sip- "Whatever. If they wanna sit there and make people--" -winces, shrugs- "--then yeah, better they go to people who'll take care of them."

Ronan: -swirls his drink a bit- "Agreed."

Connor: -nods- "And I'm with you on both points."

Both drink in silence for a moment, taking a break and letting their minds unwind. There's a lull in the bar conversation overall, and by this point it's completely dark outside.

During the lull, Gabe emptied his glass. For a while, he cradled his head on the table, face hidden, and merely listened to the surrounding bar noise and any idle conversation the other two men had. Once they got another round, Gabe sat back up and pulled the paper they'd written info out of his pocket to glance over.

Gabe: -folds it back up and sits for a moment, idly swats the paper against his palm then holds it up to them- "Thanks for that, again," -returns it to his back pocket and slides the empty glass further toward the center of the table, with theirs while standing- "I'm gonna hit it."

Ronan: "Not a problem. Anything else you need?"

Gabe: -pauses, one hand on the table and the other on his chair- -glances warily towards the bathroom, then the front door, stands himself straighter and drops his hands to his sides, seeming to stand fine on his own- "Nah, I'm good. I'll, uh, say hi to Henry for you?" -shrugs-

Ronan: "Sounds good. Have a good night!"

Connor: -gives a little half wave. "See you around and safe travels."

Gabe: "Yeah. You, too." -gives a lazy half wave while turning around- -heads toward the front to pay his tab, then disappears out the door-

- Overdue -

The dreams were getting worse.

Ronan had thought he moved past all this last summer. He’d come home, gotten a brace on his wrist, taken a little time off to heal, and gradually came back on a lighter work load until things were back to normal. No dreams after the first few nights, no intrusive thoughts, nothing to worry about except the concerns of Kris and Maili. Things had been fine. But he was starting to learn that putting something behind him was not the same as making peace.

Ronan stared at the ceiling as his breathing slowed, chasing away the image of the demon’s claws closing around his face and rubbing at the scar on his arm - a nervous habit that had gotten worse in the past few weeks. All it had taken was a mention at the beach party and the conversation at the bar. That’s all it took to make him lose control.

It made him feel pathetic.

Desire to sleep broken Ronan crawled out of bed, ignoring the 4:02 on his clock and grabbing his swimsuit, the selkie changed and out the door in only a few moments. The wind made his skin ripple with gooseflesh but he moved forward. It would be even colder where was going. Bare feet stepped over rock and then sand and he focused on the tactile sensation, trying to clear his head. Step, breathe, pause. Focus on what’s there. The wind continued to rush past him, a new sound gradually coming in - surf. He’d arrived at the beach.

The moon was the barest possible sliver, only days away from the new moon and stars splashed against the sky. Below the water was equally dark. Things had died down to a slight breeze and now the waves brushed softly against the sand, water whispering. For a long moment the selkie just stood at the water’s edge, wondering why he was out here, why he was doing this now, but as he did the demon’s image rose in his mind’s eye and he ran into the waves, away from the memories.

- Scrapes -

Two days.

That’s how long Maili had lasted this time until she ran away from her classmates. She was in 6th grade, she was 12 years old, she should have gotten past this by now. But no. This time she was getting as far away from those people as she could, screw the consequences. There were only so many times she could handle being “asked” why she wasn’t back with the third graders.

Maili panted as she attempted to climb the tree on the school grounds, shoes scraping and hands reaching for the next branch. Usually she waited until after hours to climb this tree, the thick branches in the crown obscuring any view from the outside and making a good place to unwind. She couldn’t bring herself to do that today. A broken branch scraped on the side of her hand and Maili swore, taking a moment to suck on the scrape. For a wild moment she wondered if the tree was fighting back for her not coming at the normal time.

Hearing some of the other kids nearby Maili froze, feeling as if her racing heart might give away her position. Instead they simply ran past, busy with their game of tag and never looking up. Letting out a shaky breath Maili continued her climb, determined more than ever to get out of view.

Both the speed of her climb and nerves left Maili with numerous scrapes by the time she came to her usual perch, a Y in the tree limbs that had another branch running down the middle that she could rest her back against. For most people, the space was too small. Maili still wasn’t sure how to feel about that, but... comfort was comfort, and she was going to take it. Settling in Maili screwed her eyes tight, doing her best to replace the sounds of recess with that of the shifting tree around her.

She wasn’t quite sure what had set her off quite so badly this time. It wasn’t the first time people had mistaken her for being younger - heck, it was practically the background noise of her life by this point. But honest mistakes by adults, as absolutely grating as they could be, had nothing on her classmates. Those stupid, freaking, no good - !

Knocked out of her thoughts by a gust of wind Maili braced herself against the branches, clenching her teeth as the tree swayed. She should probably start climbing back down soon. Recess would be over in a few minutes.

That’s what she needed to do. Right.

Closing her eyes again Maili hunched down in the branches, furiously doing her best to ignore her life.

***

“Maaaaaaaili! Maili, where are you?”

Jerking awake with a gasp Maili had to fight to not fall out of the tree, heart going a mile a minute. She didn’t know how long she’d been asleep, but she could tell by the crick in her neck that it had been far too long... and that she’d missed going back in after recess. Crap.

Shifting slightly so she could see out of the branches Maili saw several of the teachers searching around the school grounds, calling her name every now and again. She whipped her head back around, fighting off panicked breathing. Oh jeeze, she was dead, she was so dead! It didn’t matter if they seemed worried about her right now, the moment it became clear she’d skipped class (unintentionally or not) her head was on the chopping block. RIP Maili, dead for making the mistake of falling asleep at the wrong time.

Her brain carefully avoided thinking of being in the tree as “running away.”

Heart frozen in her throat Maili tried to remain still as possible, frantically running over options in her head. If she went down willingly she’d be dead. If she waited, she’d be even more dead. And when it came to being dead, it didn’t matter how forcibly you we killed - you were still dead. So she took the only reasonable option left at the moment - she closed her eyes and hoped it all would go away.

When she heard someone else climbing the tree, Maili almost screamed.

“... Maili?”

Wait a minute - that wasn’t one of the teachers.

Cracking open an eye Maili saw her uncle’s head, the man keeping a practical death grip on the branches around him. Frankly, she was amazed he’d managed to make it this far up. Ronan’s grasp of complex foot coordination was absolutely abysmal.

“Y-you know you’re going to break you neck at this rate, right?”

Her uncle gave a small smile, but still didn’t give up his white knuckled grip. “Well, there’s a young maiden I have to save, isn’t there? I can’t stop now.”

Maili sent him a glare that could have peeled paint. “I should kick you out just for that.”

Ronan laughed, a simple, happy sound, but his face smoothed out into seriousness a moment later.

“... anything you need, Maili?”

The silence stretched out for a few moments, Maili’s heart pounding in time with the swaying branches. “I just... overslept, that’s all.” And it was technically the truth. Well. Part of it.

Ronan nodded at her response, but Maili could tell by his expression that he’d inferred the other part of what had happened. Instead of asking about it however Ronan simply began to climb down the tree, trusting her to follow. Maili was grateful for that.

Climbing down the tree in about half the time her uncle had Maili saw him off to the side talking to the various teachers, reassuring them that everything was alright and that it had just been a simple mistake. They must have called her uncle shortly after they realized she was missing. She’d have to give them her own story sometime, but for now that was one less thing she had to worry about. Ronan walked back over to her a few seconds later. “You want me to help you back over there?”

Maili scowled. “If you try and carry me I’m going to claw your eyes out.”

Ronan raised his hands in mock surrender, grinning, Maili breaking into a small smile a few seconds later as they walked back to the school.

- A Different Sort of Flying Fox -

Ronan held the warm bundle of fur in his arms, being careful to not crush the delicate wings on its back. All in all it was slightly smaller than a house cat, bright orange, and still incredibly light for its size. Shifting its six legs the butterflox looked up at Ronan, wagged its tail, and gave a soft yip.

Less than a day and this little guy was already leaving his heart in a puddle.

“Almost home buddy.” Coming up to the front door Ronan went ahead and knocked, making sure to keep a good grip with his remaining arm. “You there Maili? I need a little help.”

There was a muffled shout from inside. “Is it really that hard to open a door?”

“I kind of have my hands full at the moment.” As if in demonstration the butterflox tried to squirm out of his grip towards the new voice. He kept ahold of it, but barely.

“What are you - ? Fine, I’ll be there in a moment!” This time he heard a thud, presumably Maili jumping to her feet, followed stomping to the door. She yanked it open, glowering. “Seriously, what-”

The words died as the butterflox finally wiggled out of Ronan’s arms and flew into the house. Her head followed, mouth gaping. The chimera simply yawned as it settled down on top of the fridge.

“That’s why I needed help.”

***

Around ten minutes later Maili had finally coaxed the butterflox off the fridge, settling it into her lap and slowly stroking its head.

“Does it- do they have a name yet?” She watched entranced as the wings gave a small flutter, tail wagging slowly.

Ronan shook his head, sitting next to her on the couch. “I figured I’d give you the chance to name him.”

“He, huh?” It was silent for a moment, Maili scratching behind an ear. “Are they from the lab?”

“Yeah. He’s a chimera - butterflox, specifically.” Ronan added in his own scratch behind the other ear, the butterflox wiggling happily.

“Is the... raevan coming too?”

The selkie had to shake his head again. “Not yet. But soon.”

“Soon...” Maili’s hand stopped. “You did show me the pictures I guess.” She let out a long breath. “Yeah. Soon.”

The butterflox turned his head and yipped at the sudden stop in petting, and Maili had to laugh. “I’m still here you big baby.” The petting turned into tickling and soon enough Maili was playing with all six of the legs, the chimera’s tail wagging away.

“Can I name him Ferdinand?” she wrestled with several paws, smile wider than Ronan had seen it in a long time. Ronan had to smile too.

“That sounds great to me.”

- Welcome Home -

Amity had seen plenty of strange and wonderful things on the way home, but this had to be the weirdest yet.

The creature staring up at her from the arm of the couch was tiny, furry, orange, unbearably cute... and had the daintiest little butterfly wings perched on its back, antenna twitching and tail wagging as it bounced slightly up and down on its legs. Six legs, yet furry. Somehow that struck her as intensely odd.

“I see you’ve found Ferdinand.”

Amity looked up to find Ronan standing a few feet away, smiling at the scene between the two flying individuals.

“Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”

The butterflox yipped, causing to the young frei to jump. A second later her nose was inches away from his, squinting hard.

He just gave another yip, and licked her cheek.

The door to Vermillion bakery swung open, two individuals entering - one walking, one floating. Amity looked around with wonder at the shop. Stars practically lit in her eyes at the decorations, the frei enjoying how similar some of the shop colors were to her own.

"HELLO! Anyone there?"

"Indoor voice, Amity."

"Oh!" She brought a hand up to her mouth, watching as Ronan fought off laughter. Her next words were much quieter. "Sorry."

"It's okay," he said, finally chuckling. "Just something to remember."

As of now the selkie had yet to spot Cesc, though he hoped to catch sight of him soon. It was only fair that the sigel would get the chance to meet the raevan who's soul he had helped obtained. The fact that Ronan had decided to make it a surprise, well... it might not work out, but he figured it was worth taking the chance.

The only face behind the counter was Vivi's pretty one-- she wore a red flowing shirt and her hair was braided elaborately and hanging over her shoulder. She was just finishing ringing up a client-- fresh baguette and a croissant to go, with coffee-- when she lit into a smile seeing Ronan and his charge. The smells in the bakery were reigned by wheat and yeast and coffee in the morning, welcoming and rejuvenating as Vivi's smile was now.

Laughter rang from her and she lifted up her arms in a silent request for them to come closer, her face bright and happy.

"My goodness, hello! What sweetness! What a very very long time that it has been, non? Who is this I see here?!" She called, her voice sweet and inviting. "Come here instantly, it is that I must see you."

Amity took a liking to this new individual almost immediately. They didn't seem to be the person Ronan had told her about (they weren't another raevan, for one thing) but she was more than happy to see them in the meantime.

The frei also took the command of "instantly" somewhat literally - with a few strong beats of her wings the flying fox soared across the room to the french woman, barely bringing herself to a stop to avoid crashing into her. "Amity! Pleased to meet you."

Ronan followed a few seconds later. "She just came home on the 24th. Is, ah, Cesc here?"

"Oh!" Vivi's laugh heightened as Amity flew right to her, and the French woman braced for impact as the Frei came close, her mouth opening and her eyebrows lifting in an expression of pleased surprise. In the end, however, it was she who closed the distance, leaning over the counter to pull the flying fox into a hug and two air-kisses on the cheek.

"Darling child, how exuberant you are! What life you have! I am Vivi, and it is a pleasure to meet you, beauty." Vivi beamed at Ronan. "A moment you kept her from meeting us is too long! Rhedefre will be overjoyed -- but wait, no! He left just fifteen minutes ago for a hike, he is at the Oceanview Trail now!" The Frenchwoman's smile twisted. "Oh! He will truly curse his luck to have missed this one!"

Every bit of physical contact almost seemed to make Amity glow, her already cheerful expression becoming even brighter. She'd learned already that not everyone appreciated this sort of thing, but this, this was nice. The last words out of Vivi's mouth were less pleasant, and she watched as Ronan's face fell. Only one option then.

"Can we go out and meet him?"

Ronan stopped on the words he had just started to form, looking over at the frei in surprise. It wasn't something he had thought of, and yet, if she were willing... He turned back to Vivi.

"Actually, would you be okay giving us directions to the trail?" Amity was about brimming with energy at this point, and he didn't feel like having it end just yet.

Vivi's smile turned back to its full wattage at the option, and she nodded along with Amity's suggestion as though SHE were the one asking to go or come along. It gladdened her heart to not have to disappoint Cesc--nearly one year removed from their shared trauma and she still had trouble seeing him even the least upset.

"One moment, I will draw for you a map--" said Vivi, pulling a clicky pen and a napkin from beneath the bar. She bent, working quickly on the directions, now and then ticking her eyes up to the flying fox Raevan. What liveliness she displayed, what cheerful willingness to be loved and accepted she seemed to have! She was beautiful in a different way than an Anya or Zurine, handsome and exquisite and flushed.

"There you are!" She said upon finishing, holding out the napkin to Ronan. "Is this legible? He will not have gone far by now; he always stretches first." She winked at Amity. "I hope you will like our Rhedefre!"

"Thank you!" both said, the two voices seeming to have an echo as they overlapped.

"See you again soon!" Amity added on, leaning over to hug Vivi once more before flying out the door and Ronan only realizing what had happened a few second later. He burst out laughing.

"I'd better go catch her before she gets lost. Thanks again!"

***

A few minutes later the two of them found themselves on the trail, Amity still keeping a quick pace but luckily slow enough for Ronan to keep up - she was getting more than distracted by the scenery, sometimes pausing for several seconds to gaze slackjawed at trees that stretched up to the sky.

Something else managed to catch Ronan's eye a second later - a flash pink and gold. Taking a chance the selkie cupped his hands around his mouth, projecting the best he could.

"Cesc!"

Cesc hadn't been hiking--or the Raevan variation thereof--very long. He'd gotten a little distracted on his way out, chatted with a passerby who recognized him from the bakery, took his time stretching. It wasn't often the Sigel had a day off, and when he did, he very rarely took it /off/. His agenda for today: a morning workout (check), a morning hike, back to the bakery for a little pitching and hitting practice, lunch at the beach while taking Guy Smiley for a walk, a shower, some light reading and lessons with Granny, dinner, drinks... the list went on.

One thing he did NOT have on his list was being called to just now, when he was just getting into the groove of his flight. Immediately, his heart jumped--a problem at the bakery?-- and he circled back, his ears flicking as he found the source of the yell.

"Ronan?" Cesc called back, still between trees, his eyes trained on the selkie and not yet seeing his companion.

It was him! Ronan started to jog over to Cesc, but long before he could arrive Amity zoomed past him and barrelled straight towards the sigel. This seemed to be turning into a trend... and a somewhat alarming one at that. He only hoped he would manage to keep up in the future.

The frei had planned barrel into Cesc with a hug, letting him know just how excited she was to meet him - but then she remembered at the last second he might not want one. As a result she swerved and went into a confused spin for a few seconds, finally righting herself with out stretched arms a moment later.

Cesc smiled at Ronan and lifted a hand to greet him -- well, this was some luck, wasn't it -- when a sudden movement caught his eye. The speed was the first thing that Cesc noticed, and the phrase 'bat out of hell' popped gracelessly into his mind as his eyes widened and he started, arms out and wings splayed. Instinctively, his antlers and wings turned into golden light, expecting mischief, with the prongs of his antlers sharpening to points and his wings growing to impressive, glittering size.

Then he paused, concerned, uttering a cry as the -- wait, what was that?-- lost some control and swerved and dipped and then stopped. And Cesc saw what she was, silver hair tousled, light-white threads waving about her like a halo, her dark skin flushed and her eyes young, blissfully young and sweet and naive.

His glow dissipated. His antlers rounded and his wings shrank and folded back and the shock on his face melted cleanly into a genial smile. A hug. She wanted a hug. She was here to meet him.

Part of the Sigel suddenly remembered what it meant to be Frei, a newborn, meeting everyone and hoping to be liked, hoping to do everything right, and here he was now: tall and broad in his athletic dry-fit shirt and stubble, somewhat sweaty already from the hike, meeting this astounding, sporty, beautiful creature he'd somehow somehow had a hand in creating.

Cesc laughed. His color was high, and he put out his arms. "I don't smell so good," he warned. "But I'm happy to hug you all the same."

In her brief tailspin Amity had missed most of Cesc's threat display, only seeing the last bit of fading light as she turned back around. The laugh that greeted her however was so much brighter than what she might have seen before, and she gladly accepted offer for a hug, burying her face in his shoulder as she wrapped her arms around him. Unlike her, he had a waist, making the experience of hugging more like that of hugging Ronan than that of hugging another frei. She didn't mind however - she could find out how the other felt another time.

Ronan finished jogging up to where the other two were, having sprinted for a brief period when Cesc's antlers had sharpened, but he was glad to see that everything had turned out alright. Hand holding or linked arms was definitely going to be kept in mind for the future when he was out and about with Amity.

"Hey there!" He said. "I guess that ended up as more of a surprise than I expected, sorry about that."

It took a long few seconds, but Amity finally extracted herself from the hug when she heard Ronan, still beaming at Cesc even as she backed up.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Amity!"

She hugged him anyhow, unabashed and friendly. He was surprised at how outgoing she was, and when she spoke, he was further impressed by her command of the language. His own had lagged, and for nearly a year he'd felt himself a stranger in a strange land by the nimbleness of everyone else's tongues. She, however, seemed built for any kind of deftness.

"It's alright!" laughed Cesc. "Any time you want this kind of surprise, I'm up for it."

He turned back toward Amity then, his smile still wide and pleased. "Amity, I'm Rhedefre--but you can call me Cesc, too, if you like." He put a hand on her shoulder, gentle. "It's very, very nice to meet you."

Ronan grinned at Cesc's statement, settling in next to the two raevans and hooking his thumbs in his pockets. "I'll keep that in mind for the future."

Amity herself gave a nod at given name. "Cesc... okay!" They'd made it, she'd met him... and now a new question formed in her mind.

"What are you doing," she paused, taking a moment to gesture wildly at their surroundings and the trees, "out here?" Vivi had mentioned something about a hike, but Amity wanted to know what that meant to him.

Cesc smiled at Ronan but slid his eyes to Amity and kept them on the Frei. There was much he wanted to ask Ronan -- when Amity had arrived, how things had gone so far, how elated his family must be-- but he kept the questions for another time, one when Amity was not around. For a newborn, the short histories of their lives were nowhere as fascinating as exploring the world. And that, THAT, Cesc wanted to assist in-- especially after how spectacularly he and Ronan had failed that poor bat in her soul's past life.

He looked at Amity, at her graceless, youthful gesticulating, her boundless enthusiasm.

Maybe the term 'spectacular failure' wasn't really necessary, after all…

"I'm out here on a hike," said Cesc with a nod. "A hike is when you go out in the forest and you just walk or run or climb or fly for a while, away from buildings and the city, and get to be with nature for a little bit. It's very nice to do, and it keeps you strong." He patted his own bicep in a show of what he meant. Then, with a boyish grin, he added: "And it's pretty, and fun."

Amity floated transfixed as Cesc gave a description of what a hike was. In her mind she felt as if a small checklist was being checked off with each word. This was so many things she was interested in... and more.

She wanted to do it. Badly.

Seeing Cesc flex his bicep Amity immitated the gesture, looking down at her arm. Her muscles weren't as big simply due to the fact of smaller arms, but something told her that her own showing of flexing muscles wasn't bad at all. She looked back to the sigel with a large grin.

"Can you teach me? The climbing first, maybe?"

Ronan watched as Amity seemed to discover new passion all at once, and hoped the result would be positive. He definitely knew she needed some way to burn her boundless energy.

Cesc's eyebrows lifted and his head cocked back--he hadn't expected the frei to have been so gung ho and forthright. Immediately, he smiled, looking over at Ronan with his head tilted.

"Well, sure--if Ronan says it's okay, I don't see why not!"

"I'd say go for it," Ronan said with a smile. "I'll hang back if that's alright." He could do basic running, but he had a feeling what the two of them could do would be somewhat out of his skill range - and he'd already seen how absurdly fast Amity could when she wanted.

Amity bobbed up and down and brought her hands together, looking back over to Cesc. "I'm ready when you are!"

Her enthusiasm was infectious. Cesc nodded at Ronan, relieving the selkie of any further need to stick around, although Cesc wasn't entirely certain he could keep Amity in hand if it was needed. Ah, well--who was to say that Ronan did, either, after her entrance?

"Alright, Ronan! We'll holler if we need you then, ah?" Cesc laughed, half-teasing. He turned toward Amity then, trying to remember her makeup. The flying fox he remembered well, but what was her essence? Tree-something? Sap? Bark--wait, yeah, bark. Well, seemed like she'd probably take to trees well then...

"Okay!" Cesc put his hands together in a 'let's get going!' sort of clap, then rubbed them together as he looked around for a good tree. "Well, now, you can climb trees or rocks, but we've mostly got trees around here, so why don't we go with that? Does that sound alright?"

He floated to one nearby and motioned for Amity to follow him.

"Sounds amazing," Amity said, looking up at the tree in front of her. She'd fed from different trees before closer to home, just a little bit at a time, but somehow she'd never really thought about climbing them. Maybe it had something to do with the size - this tree was so much bigger than any she'd seen before.

"What do I need to do?" Part of her wanted to grab a snack right there, but she figured it'd be better to let Cesc give her the pointers first - and who knew, maybe the bark at the top might feel different!

"Well," said Cesc, floating closer to her. "It's kind of a… personal decision. When people climb, they've got to think about their legs and feet and hips and gravity. We've got these." Cesc flaired open his wing in demonstration, then folded them neatly across his back again. "So we don't have to worry about that stuff, unless we want to. But this is climbing, not flying, so I usually try to do what I can without my wings, and just use them as balance, or as a catch, should I need to."

As he spoke, Cesc went forward and grabbed a hold of the lowest branch that he could find. He pulled himself up like a pull-up to branch level, and opened his wings slightly to steady his balance. From there, he reached up and grabbed another branch and did the same- a swing and pull sort of motion, pressing aside branches with his wings in lieu of legs. When he reached three branches up, he looked down to see if Amity followed. "Be careful of your wings while you go! Branches can pack a punch."

"Okay!"

Coming up to the tree Amity began to follow after Cesc, keeping her wings bundled tightly to her back. She'd already learned that the membrane on her wings could be sensitive, and she had no desire to test that on sharp tree branches.

While things took a little longer without pushing things out of the way with her wings Amity had sooned squirrel up to where Cesc was, looking at him expectantly while clinging to a nearby branch.

"What next? Do we keep going up?"

"You go up as high as you want!" laughed Cesc, pulling himself up onto a higher branch. He continued the motions, pushing and pulling, clearing a path, choosing the way that seemed easiest for his new young friend--until finally he stopped, close to the top of the tree, and rested there. He waited for Amity to reach him and then he turned toward her with a smile.

"Then you get your reward," he said, motioning with his head outward. From the top of the tree, the view was so different, the perspective so shifted! They could see into other trees, see the nests of birds made from twigs and all sorts of things, the holes where squirrels lived, the natural pathway that foot traffic of man and beast left on the ground. It was peaceful, too, quieter in the branches, with the noise of other hikers' conversations just barely reaching them--like a laugh on a breeze.

"It's nice, isn't it?" prompted Cesc, smiling.

When Amity heard a mention of a reward while climbing the last few branches, she wasn't sure what to expect. What she got wasn't it. It was better.

Spread out before her was almost more natural wonder than she'd ever seen, and in that instant she knew, just knew that this was the sort of thing she wanted to be able to see, to explore in this strange and wonderful world she was still learning.

She perched on the tip of the tree, ears and wings shivering along leaves in the breeze as her lips parted, her next words a mere breath. "It is."

"Thank you."

Cesc had a feeling, considering Amity's makeup and general disposition--by far the most active and cheerful newborn he'd ever met-- that he should be looking at her face when she arrived at the top, and not the view.

He wasn't wrong.

He broke into a smile at her look of wonder, her face colored from exertion and her eyes bright with excitement. What a brilliant child, thought Rhedefre, to be in Ronan's care. He'd make sure she was always that way.

"Any time," he replied simply.

Amity couldn’t sleep.

2:13 glowed on the microwave clock in the kitchen, wind whispering outside and the sound of crashing waves in the distance. Moonlight sent branching shadows through the windows. The refrigerator hummed.

Several hours ago Ronan had wished her goodnight, ruffling the hair between her ears and squeezing her shoulder. Telling her to get some rest and not stay up too late. And yet here she was, restless. Unable to match up with the normal schedule.

For the most part, things have been great since she came home. Ronan has been teaching her basic reading, and showing her around the island. Maili fills in some more gaps, and tells her about social stuff or what she should say to people (though Amity isn’t always sure that she should trust that advice). Kris has been showing her fashion and flowers and music. The hikes she takes around the forests and the trees and all the different animals are amazing!

And yet...

Amity floated over to one of the windows, watching a tree branch shake in the breeze as the leaves danced, scattering starlight that was only partially covered by the clouds. As much fun as she’d had, and even with all the stuff Ronan and Maili and Kris have done for her, Amity was still very aware that she was... different. The half body was the obvious one, and the wings and the hair and the ears too, but it was also the way everyone else talked with each other, interacted with each other. Half the time they already seemed to know what the other’s going to say, or it was some joke where Amity didn't know the punchline and everyone else burst out laughing. She could tell that they really cared and were trying to help her, yes, but she wasn't part of the group. Not really.

Then, there was a glow, out of the corner of her eye down the hallway and away from the kitchen and windows. One that she hadn’t noticed from her previous spot in the middle of the couch. A lamp left on? A night light maybe? The frei floated down the hall, arms hugging her chest and wings tight against her back.

Once she got closer she realized the light was coming from Maili’s room, the door cracked and the glow just barely seeping out, far too faint to be one of the lamps or main lights. Through the crack she could see Ferdinand sleeping on his little bed on top of the dresser, antennae twitching. Taking a deep breath through her nose, Amity pushed open the door.

At the sound of the door creaking Maili gave a start on the bed, guilt flashing on her face and quickly folding closed a clamshell case, the light winking out. A moment later she finally seemed to realize that Amity wasn’t Ronan and that she wasn’t going to get in trouble. She relaxed, though still regarded the frei somewhat warily.

“... hey. You alright?”

“Um. Yeah.” Amity floated there, continuing to hug her arms to her chest. “Can’t sleep. What’re you doing?”

Maili hesitated for a moment, then slowly opened the clamshell back up and motioned for Amity to come over. “Close the door first though.”

Closing the door behind her and making sure it wasn’t cracked this time Amity floated over and settled down on the bed next to Maili, ribbon pooling beneath her. She found herself looking at two bright little screens, a colorful creature sleeping on the bottom one until Maili poked it with a stylus, and it yawned, two little hearts floating up as it woke. For several moments Amity watched fascinated as Maili pet, played with, and fed the little creature, all the way until a whole stream of hearts filled the screen at once.

“It’s... just a game,” Maili said, switching to a different creature with the stylus and starting the whole process over again. “Not even the main part of it, really, but it helps when I’m stressed out. Something nice I guess.”

“It does sound nice,” Amity said, arms slowly relaxing and hands setting down on the bed, hands that gladly took the system and stylus a moment later when Maili passed it over, Amity now petting the creature and feeding it all she could. They lost track of how much time they spent, passing the system back and forth or Maili going to get more of the creatures from an in game computer, but they didn’t care.

Sure, things weren't perfect, but for right now... it was going to be okay.
