Augury's Mission
It was much later than Caelia usually stayed up for, but for the first time in her short life, Augury could not find sleep as easily as she wished. Tonight had been like most nights – someone, her father in this case, in a rather rare occasion, was telling her a story.
Usually she was read a story, but it was not the case her. Her daddy did not need books to read, or to even think up anything in particular. Ankou would simply tell her tales of the places he had seen, each one stranger than the one that preceded it. The Spirit Guide would tell her of cities hidden underwater, wast networks of caverns hidden underground, of islands floating among the clouds, of worlds of bright suns, worlds with green skies, with purple skies, of worlds were only night existed.
Those things were captivating to the young goddess, whose imagination was wild enough to bring imagery following these words. Usually, those tales would have been more than enough to lure her into sleep's hold, but tonight it was not so. Caelia might have been young, but she was not completely clueless as to what was going on around her. Eventually, she would pretend – wide sunrise colored eyes slowly growing smaller and then closed, small body curling up in her bed and limbs tangling in the sheets.
It would take her father a minute or two to notice, and believe that she was asleep. Caelia would hear the creak as he got up from the chair that sat beside the head of her bed. She would almost move when she felt cold fingers brush away tiny strands of stray purple hair, and the kiss that was placed on top of her forehead.
”Sleep well, sunshine.”And so he would turn and leave, and she would lost track of her father then – his steps were so light – until he stopped to talk to her mother. She could only make up a few things of what they spoke about, of souls and travels, of underworlds and rebirth. Perhaps most important was her daddy's tone of voice – worried, almost tired even. He would apologize, and her mommy would say it was fine.
The conversation was foreign to her, but she knew that this mean that daddy would not be there in the morning when she woke up. It was how things always where, but she had not thought about the fact that her daddy might not have been happy with being gone so much. If certainly did not sound as if he was.
Caelia would hear the door open and close as daddy left, but she was frowning to herself now, trying to think.about what to do with her new found knowledge. It wasn't fair that daddy wasn't away so much if it did not make him happy to do it, not at all. There had to be a way for them to help, really.
It would be hard to sneak out and follow her daddy when she had no idea where he was going. He rarely ever did say, though he was with Nath a lot lately. And Hrist too. Something about training valkyries.
...What was a valkyrie ? She blinked suddenly, trying to remember. Her daddy had told her... Valkyrie were his, and they helped him with finding the dead. If she became a valkyrie, maybe she could help too ?
Ha ! That was it ! The little goddess grinned to herself. Of course she had no idea how one became a valkyrie, but she could sneak out and see, the next time Nath and Hrist left. Yesss.... That would work amazingly.
And then daddy wouldn't have to be lonely anymore.
With that decided, Augury settled, and sleep claimed her at last.
