Auntie Axel had held off telling Idylla that Isobel was home and had been home for a few days. She’d promised her twin that she would give her news as soon as she got them, but she wanted to enjoy the Frei all to herself for a little longer. Because once Idylla knew that her niece was home, she’d want to be over all the time and would try to swindle her way to get babysitting rights. Her sister was the obvious choice when it came to the prime babysitter for Isobel when Axel was at work, which she did not dispute. She just didn’t want to make it easy for her twin.
It had been a week though since Isobel had been home, they’d even painted her room and gotten her furniture. The room painting though had been quite the day. The Frei hadn’t exactly painted anything as much as throw colors everywhere and then drag it around to make it look almost cohesive. Thankfully, Axel had covered everything that shouldn’t have been painted some bright color and the rest was history. Now the frei’s room was vibrant spots and stripes of reds, oranges, yellows, blues, and greens. Entering her room was like being assaulted by a rainbow and could give anyone a headache if they stayed in there too long. For Isobel though? It was the perfect place for her.
Isobel seemed to like the height of the apartment but she was always pointing to the sunset or sundown when it squeezed in between the apartment buildings with a pleading look in her eye. Like just seeing those few rays wasn’t enough for her and she wanted more, even needed more. She could never understand why Isobel had woken up three nights in a row so she could witness the sun rise, or the pulling the frei did so she could witness the sun setting. Axel had had to make her understand that she needed sleep, but the frei was more than welcomed to sit outside their balcony and watch it by herself as long as she didn’t go off the balcony.
The week they’d spent just together had been all about establishing a routine between the two of them. She still didn’t know what Isobel ate since she’d been warned not to feed her any solids, but she’d been told that the frei would let her know when it happened. It worried her sometimes as she ate at the table and watched draw and go through more Crayola crayons than she herself had ever gone through as a child. But drawing made her happy and maybe soon she’d switch her to painting, whatever outlet would allow her to express herself she would follow through with it. Axel most definitely dreaded calling her sister over, but she did need to meet her and thus it had to be done.
Dragging her cellphone from across the table, Axel dialed the number and caught Isobel’s look as she paused to see what her guardian was doing.
“Good morning Idylla, how are you?”
“Quite good yourself? Any news for me?”
“Yes, could you come over today?”
There was a loud screech over the phone and Axel pulled away from her cellphone. Isobel tilted her head frowning.
“Who?” She said quietly.
“My sister, your aunt.”
“Axel, I am coming over right now! Be there in fifteen!”
“Please don’t kill anyone coming over.”
The call had already been terminated and Axel shook her head. Her sister could be so extreme sometimes.
“Alright, I’m going to get dressed really quick. Do you want to clean up the kitchen a bit?”
The frei’s education was going well, she’d taught her quite a bit and she seemed to retain quite well what she taught her. Though she was always distracted when she saw something else and forget trying to teach her when she saw something that was colorful because the frei just had to examine it. Isobel nodded and began putting her crayons together while Axel went to get dressed and put her hair up into a pony-tail. She hoped Idylla didn’t scare Isobel. They were twins and as such their resemblance was almost completely perfect, with the exception that Idylla liked to dye her hair red to show off her exuberant nature and she kept hers black.
As if on cue, fifteen minutes later there was a loud banging on the door and some sort of muffled shouting behind it. Isobel looked at the door and floated in the living room uncertain while looking at Axel. The guardian wanted to face palm, her sister was way too energetic at times and she didn’t know how Isobel would do. She didn’t know how she would react with someone who looked so much like her. Idylla had some bad behaviors that she didn’t want the frei to learn.
“Idylla! Stop your banging, you’re scaring her! If you want to come in you’re going to have to be calm.”
There was a quietness that followed and Axel decided she should probably get up and went to open the door to face her twin. The woman was holding a gift in her hands and smiled sheepishly back at her black haired twin. Axel lifted a brow at her. She was still dubious about the whole thing, but she could not deny her family from meeting her daughter.
“You need to stay calm.”
Axle moved from the door’s entrance and let Idylla in. Her twin hesitated and then took a few steps inside, Isobel in the meantime had floated over and stared at the woman before her. When Axel turned after shutting the door next to her twin, Isobel glanced at both woman with the most confused expression Axel had ever seen on her face. Finally she floated closer, placing a hand on Axel’s shoulder and then one on Idyllas.
“Axel… Isobel…”
“Idylla.” The twin supplemented.
“Idylla… Axel, Isobel, Idylla.”
“Yes.” Idylla turned to Axel with tears in her eyes. “She’s perfect.” Axel smiled.
“I know.” Axel smiled.
"Family."

UV Buffet Isobel’s lack of food and energy was starting to worry the guardian. The frei kept telling her she was going to be okay, but Axel was getting worried more and more every day. She had to get back to work though, one of her brides was getting antsy and she did not want her to start questioning everything they’d built up to this point. Axel had not wanted to drag Isobel with her to work, not in her weakened state but there was no way she could leave her with Idylla either who would turn crazy mother hen on her on a dim.
So Axel had brought her to the office where she’d met Mildred and taken quite the liking to the old woman. Bianca was sitting in the reception area and got up when Axel arrived.
“Axel I am so sorry to disturb you, I knew you wanted two weeks off, but I’ve just been so nervous. You know the florist called me the other day and he said they wouldn’t be able to make the deadline and it’s been raining for so many days and I –“
Axel waved her hand.
“Bianca, why did you hire me?”
“To take care of my wedding?”
“Yes and that’s what I plan on doing. Mind waiting for me downstairs, I think you’re in good need of a day off and I know exactly where to take you. No buts!”
The bride hesitated but then moved towards the elevator and went in.
“Mildred can you take care of the florist, tell him to remove her number from his folder and have him call me in an hour? I can’t believe he called her, he should have called me,” Axel turned to Isobel and grabbed her hand. “Alright, do you want to come with me or do you want to stay here?”
“Stay with you.”
“Alright, can you go downstairs and wait for me in the car? Bianca is a very nice lady, you can talk to her too. I’ll be down in a bit, just need to grab her file.”
“Okay.”
Isobel floated to the elevator and went down. The Bianca woman was pacing at the entrance of the building and the frei went towards her. The woman stopped her pacing when she saw her floating over and gave her a smile.
“You must be the one we’ve all been hearing about.”
“Yes, daughter.” That’s what Axel had taught her to say when people asked her.
“I’m Bianca,” She extended her hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Isobel.” She gripped her hand and shook it.
“I am so nervous for this wedding, so many things started out so bad. I tried to do everything on my own and then went almost crazy.”
“Axel is good. Good at job. No worry.”
“It’s hard.”
Axel came through the entrance and ushered everyone into the car at once. Isobel wondered why the woman was so nervous. Axel hadn’t explained everything about her job and weddings were still a bit of a mystery for her. What she did know so far was that it was probably one of the most important moments in anyone’s life and people hired Axel so they didn’t have to stress about it. If Axel was taking care of it though, why was the woman so nervous then? Just didn’t make sense, but maybe she was missing some parts. In any case, she was looking forward to going to this place called a ‘tanning salon’.
The trio arrived and got out of the car, Axel went to the desk while Isobel took a look around. The place was so warm, almost uncomfortably so. There were weird trees and things the frei had never seen. Soon though axel was taking her to stay near a bench while Bianca went into a small little room.
“I’m just going to the bathroom, I’ll be right back okay?”
“Axel, I don’t feel good.”
“I know, you’re colors are looking bad. Just hold on okay? I’ll give the Lab a call.”
Isobel watched Axel move out of sight and she turned to look around and leaned heavily on the bench. Bianca’s door opened and her head poked out to look around.
“Oh hey Isobel, where did Axel go?”
“Bathroom.”
“Oh okay, would you mind coming in to unzip me then?”
Isobel nodded and floated over slowly, she’d done it before so she could handle it. Once inside, the Frei could not stop staring at the light coming from the machine. It was so warm and nice and isobel touched it.
“Uh Isobel?”
Axel came in and stared at Isobel who was now floating in the middle of the standup tanning booth. Bianca was staring at her and was just as confused as she was. Isobel’s colors seemed to be brightening up a little and so she moved closer. Was this what she fed off from? If that was the case she was going to have to look up on what exactly she was feeding from. She figured it was probably the light from the tanning booth, but always better to double check.
“Uh Isobel? What are you doing?”
“Food! Feels good.”
“Okay well, you stay in there for a bit, I’m going to close the door okay?”
“Okay.”
Axel closed the door and helped Bianca pick up her things.
“What does she mean exactly by food?”
“I think she’s feeding off the rays. At least I found out what to keep her fed, been trying to figure that out for a week or so now. I’ll get you another booth before I go back and check up on her.”
Axel got Bianca all settled down in a new booth and then went in to see Isobel who had removed as much clothing as she could.
“So warm.”
“Yup, it’s a tanning booth. How are you feeling?”
“Better.”
“Good. From now on, every time you’re feeling hungry we’re going to come here okay? You’re going to need to tell me.”
“Okay.”

Origins Part One Isobel gazed out of her window hands on the sill as she watched the people below. Her birthday had pasted a few months ago and yet she found herself growing restless. She was two years old from what Axel had told her and yet she felt a sense of… lack of accomplishment. She knew that Axel was her mother, that Idylla was her aunt… But she felt like she was missing something, she just wasn’t sure as to what it was exactly. Axel had told her, while briefly, the process on how she had been born after she’d seen a documentary on the whole child birth theory. The Raevan had gone on a question spree after finishing the documentary. Who was her father? Did she have a father? She had not been born from Axel, did that even make her her mother? Axel had tried to answer to the best of her abilities and Isobel had been relentless. The whole thing confused her, why hadn’t she been born like everyone else? Why did she not look like everyone else? These Axel had simply looked at her with an expression she didn’t recognize. Sadness? Pity? Isobel rejected both of those emotions from her guardian, she wanted to understand. Axel in her attempt to satisfy or perhaps pacify her had left her with a book and an usb key on her bed that morning before leaving for work. Isobel hadn’t bothered to open either of them, instead she looked out the window and waited for the impending doom of winter to arrive. This was perhaps one of the most depressing times of the year and she hated t. Sighing softly, she floated away from the window and into the living room, gazing out at the emptiness and feeling angry. She had shared these feeling with Axel, told her she felt angry and powerless and that she needed answers. How could her guardians answer to her woes be a book? Floating back into her room, Isobel finally picked up the book that had been left to her. Her name was engraved in the white leather in neat and pristine letters. The frei made her way over to her desk and laid the book down before taking out some of the art markers she had received from her birthday and began to draw whatever came to mind. It took a few hours for her to finish everything, but there was barely any white left of the leather. If this book had her name on it, than it ought to properly represent her and now she was satisfied with it. Finally opening the book, Isobel read some of the journal entries that Axel had hand written herself. She told the story of how she had received the essence and the empty bottle for a soul. There was also three pages on how she had captured her soul which really amused Isobel to no end. There were the entries with photographs that axel had taken herself. Her soul was so beautiful, the swirling colors captures her eyes and kept them. The most interesting parts for her were Axel’s notes on the essence she had been given. The flowers were quite pretty too, Isobel found she had been created from two very pretty things. The rest of the entries were all mostly images that had been taken by Axel or someone else and they were all of Isobel. Axel had made little notes under each picture and added dates to each entry. The final entry was a picture she had taken at her birthday. Isobel brushed the picture of her standing next to Axel with a large smile on her face, she loved Axel very much. If she truly thought about it, it didn’t matter if Axel was her mother or not or if she was different. She had a loving guardian and that was all she could ever want or need. The frei closed the book and put it aside, she picked up the usb key and floated towards the computer in the living room. She plugged it in and opened the file. Inside was a single folder named “Lupina & Carlos Destination Wedding: Mexico Jan 2012”. The frei looked inside and found a bunch of pictures, t was of a wedding but the frei didn’t understand what the meaning of these pictures were or why Axel had decided to show them to her. Finally she got to some behind the scenes pictures and clicked to them until she stopped on one of an old man with a chameleon on his shoulder. Isobel stared long and hard at that photo, this was the starting point of her life. This was her soul, but who was that man? From the previous entries she had read from Axel, this was the man who had taken care of the panther chameleon. Was he… Could he be considered her father? The frei stared at him long and sought out more pictures of him. As it happen, Axel had taken plenty of pictures with the old man and his chameleon and even some of just the chameleon. Isobel didn’t know how to feel about all of this, it was slightly overwhelming. But this, this was definitely were her soul had come from. Axel had told her what her soul had come from, had showered her pictures before on Google, but it had never been anything this personal. The sudden urge to meet this man overcame the frei. She needed to meet him, see him for herself and… Well that’s as far as her plan went. This needed to happen however, surely Axel still was able to get in touch with this Lupina and her husband? Yes, this is what she wanted to do. She needed to go back to her roots and she would not be satisfied until this was done. Isobel closed the folder and removed the usb key, Axel would be home soon. They would need to have a talk about all of this.

Origins Part Two “I’m home.” Axel closed the door behind her and settled her bag on the floor. The house was eerily empty, but Isobel didn’t make noise when she floated anyways. Putting her keys into in the ceramic bowl next to the entrance Axel ventured into the apartment and headed for the kitchen. It too was empty so she moved on to Isobel’s room and then her computer room where she found the Frei. “Hey.” She said softly. “Hi, how was work?” The Frei floated closer to Axel. “Not bad. How was your day?” “I looked at everything you gave me. Can we… Can we speak about it?” Axel nodded and left the study to go back into the kitchen and take a seat at the living room table. “So what do you think?” “That man is not really my father right? I mean, I’ve never met him and well he was the guardian of my soul. There’s also Kyou who without him I could not have been born without. You’re not really my mother, or you sort of are but not really. And it’s all very…” Isobel waved her hand in the air as she tried to grasp for words that escaped her. “Confusing. I, we barely know anything about my soul and maybe they belonged to someone else. Do I consider them family too? What does that make me?” “Isobel, you are you. You are unique and a being of your own. Are you not happy with that?” The Frei regarded Axel, she’d always considered the guardian her mother and that was not about to change. She wasn’t created like everyone else and perhaps that made it her choice and no one else’s. Axel was right about one thing though, she was a new being of her own even if she was pieces of two things. Perhaps she as simply asking too many questions, yet part of herself wanted to meet this man who had been the guardian of her previous soul. Isobel was determined in this and if Axel wouldn’t help her she would find other means. “I want to go and meet him.” “Meet who?” “The man who was the guardian of my soul.” Fear cut through Axel, did Isobel want to leave her? She wouldn’t allow it and neither would the Lab. “I don’t think that’s possible,” she said slowly trying to test the waters. “Why not?” “I would have to get in touch with him and I don’t even know where to begin with that.” She could back track of course, but how did she explain something such as this? “I don’t expect you to understand Axel, but I want to do this. I want to meet him. If you do not help me I will ask someone else to help.” “Isobel…” “No, I am not kidding. Axel I would never dream of leaving you, I… I love you. You are my guardian. There are no words to express what it is you and I have. But this, this is a part of me I want to discover. Why can’t you be supportive of this.” “I don’t want you leaving,” Axel said with an angry sigh and crossed her arms. “I don’t want you to go there and tell me that you’re not coming back home because you want to stay there and do some more self discovery and just never come back to me.” Exasperated Axel rose from her seat and began to pace. “Am I not enough? Why do you need more? I provide everything for you here and you are safe and healthy.” Isobel floated up and tried to grab onto Axel to make her stop pacing. Axel shrugged her hand away. The Frei had never seen Axel so angry with her before. “That is not the issue, Axel I would not leave you. I am barely old enough to go anywhere on my own,” Isobel gave a nervous laugh. “I understand you don’t understand all of this, but please.” Axel shook her head. “No, I’m sorry Isobel. I can’t let you go there.” Axel turned to leave and Isobel grabbed onto her shoulders, floating in front of her to block her way. “Why?” Isobel could feel the tears gathering at her eyes and she was sure her colors had darkened to match her mood. “I can’t lose you.” And with that Axel moved around Isobel and left the apartment. The Frei sighed softly and sniffed, she didn’t want to cry. Axel was now mad at her and she had no way to trace back this man. Maybe Idylla could help her but that would be the harder path to go. She had to convince Axel that this was for the best. She understood the fears Axel had about this whole expedition and she was sure she was now regretting indulging Isobel with the photos. Isobel sighed in defeat and floated to her room to look out the window. She didn’t really have any other Frei friends she could talk to about these kinds of things. Didn’t even know if they felt the same as she did. Isobel floated to Axel’s work station and grabbed the USB key as well as the book with pictures. She was going to make her guardian see that this was truly for the best. She didn’t know how yet but she was going to make it happen.

Origins Part Three To say that Axel had been royal pissed at Isobel was an understatement. The Frei had waited a good many hours before Axel had returned back to the apartment in the middle of the night. The guardian had mumbled something about being at her sisters and then went to her bedroom and shut the door behind her. There was no apology and certainly no other words spoken between them even when Isobel asked how she was doing. She’d gone back to bed when she knew Axel had settled down to sleep. There was no way she’d be able to sleep, not after these events.
The few days after hadn’t been a piece of cake either. Isobel had told herself she wouldn’t speak of it until she had a concrete plan and it helped to lighten the mood. So until Axels’ mood lightened Isobel did her own preparations and undercover work. The Frei had found an ally with Mildred, Axels’ secretary, who helped her track down the wedding in question and then the phone number of the bride. Isobel had never been so nervous, she couldn’t’ ask Axel to call anyone and she herself had never called anyone. But she had no choice, things needed to happen.
The conversation had gone surprisingly well once Isobel had explained the situation as a whole. She’d been happy to know that the man, the bride’s grandfather, was still alive and living in Mexico. The woman offered up an address and promised to keep in touch so they could arrange something since her father only spoke Spanish. The bride had even said something about going down to see her father for Christmas and had invited Isobel to meet him then. Isobel was sure Axel would be furious if she went by herself and she said she would get back to her.
Maybe if she built the whole thing as a vacation then Axel would be more lenient. She couldn’t promise Axel that she would return with her, she wouldn’t believe her. If Isobel was honest she liked it here and if she moved to Mexico she would never be able to see or meet any other frei’s ever again. Lab was where she was born and she had no plans on leaving that. A vacation rather than a visit sounded better in her mind, especially if she had a return ticket for both of them. If it was going to be a vacation however, she was going to have to plan activities.
All this planning was foreign to the frei, usually Axel was the one who did this kind of thing, she was the one who was good at it. Once again Isobel sought out Mildred to help her; everything would need to be perfect down to the very time and day they woke up the morning of their flight. It took more than her fair share of free time, time away from her precious hobbies, than she had thought such a tip would require. However, once all was said and done she had a foul proof plan that even Axel would have a hard time agreeing too.
They would be in Mexico for two whole weeks, made possible by Mildred’s exceptional skill at weeding out brides who wanted their wedding near their vacation time. She’d talked them up, asking when they thought they wanted to get married and then dropped a few horror stories of winter weddings. Worked every time, she was old and had seen and heard it all right? This old woman couldn’t possibly be telling them lies; she’d been in the industry for so long! Thankfully, not many brides wanted a winter wonderland wedding and the two who had wanted one had pushed back their date to spring. More time to plan for them they’d said.
The frei had made sure that there was always an activity at hand, whether it was visiting an old ruin or sightseeing around the seeing. They would certainly never be bored, plus seeing the old man wasn’t the only reason she wanted to go to Mexico in winter. There was the Holi Festival and that was something Isobel wanted to live through. It was also another very good reason for Axel to accept this crazy plan of hers. She’d also picked out the best hotels, within budget of course, so that Axel wouldn’t have to worry about a thing. She had thought of everything, every single little detail was accounted for.
It was perfect.

Booked Folder in hand, Isobel floated next to the door waiting for Axel’s return home. She always got home at the same time and considering the bit of noise she’d heard from down the hall her guardian would be coming in at any time now. A key finding its way into the lock made Isobel straighten herself up a little bit, chin up and then she took a deep breath. Axel opened the door, eyes still on the keyhole as she took it out before she glanced up surprised to see Isobel standing by the door. “Oh! You scared me Isobel, what are you doing?” Axel closed the door and dropped her keys into the bowl by the door. “I have a project I want to share with you.” “Iso…” Axel’s voice warned her but Isobel was already prepared for it. She took off her jacket and hung it. “Axel, this is a vacation and I know for a fact that for those two weeks I have selected you aren’t working.” “I’m older than you Isobel, you can’t trick me.” Isobel floated close to her guardian and gently grabbed onto her arm. “Please just hear me out Axel.” Isobel felt like a whining child, but Axel was being stubborn. Taking a deep breath and sighing, Axel made a head motion before heading toward the dining table. Isobel floated after her, taking up her usual spot where there wasn’t a chair. She hated floating on a chair and as such they’d just removed one from the table so she felt more comfortable. Axel took her seat across from Isobel, settling down and pulling the chair forward as she placed her hands on the table. “Alright then, go for it. I am all ears.” Isobel nodded and placed the folder on the table before turning it over so it was facing Axel so she could read with ease. Isobel knew what she had to say by heart from practicing, she didn’t even needed to read or look at the folder to know what was there. The front page read Axel & Isobel’s Vacation in a neat feminine text. Isobel turned the page over and there was an annex. Mildred had helped her with the whole planning. Turning another page, here Isobel glanced at Axel as she read the information. “So our vacation will be two weeks in Mexico, from the Third week of December. I have confirmed with Mildred that there is no issue with your work.” Isobel clarified that little point so Axel couldn’t use the excuse of work. “I see you two have been plotting behind my back,” Axel said on a sour note. Isobel continued and turned a page. “This is the hotel we’d be staying at, the room and here you can see everything that is included in that. It’s not booked of course; I wanted to share this with you first.” “It’s a nice hotel,” Axel didn’t want to admit it but a vacation would be nice, especially in a warm place like Mexico. She knew the part she was dreading the most was coming up, but she stayed quiet. “I’m glad you think so.” Isobel beamed at her before turning the page. “This is a list of the activities I found that I think would be interesting. Lots of visiting places and some scuba diving. I’m just not sure how that would work out with me, but I put it on there anyways.” At the bottom of the list she had placed ‘visiting previous soul owner’. She knew Axel was eyeing it and here things got tricky. “The next few pages is just a lose schedule and other unimportant things. I know you want to talk about one thing specifically.” “Yea…” Axel took a deep breath. “You aren’t going to stop bothering me about this are you?” “No.” Isobel didn’t even have to think about the answer. She would not stop until that man was dead and then it would be too late. Isobel would hold a grudge if the man died before she could meet him, Axel knew this. There was no way she could even remotely avoid this. If she wanted to stop future fights from breaking out now, she was going to have to do this now or never. “Alright then, let’s go to Mexico. Book it.” “Really? Are you sure?” Isobel’s heart skip a beat, she didn’t want to force Axel. “Yes I am sure.” Isobel’s excitement bubbled over, her colors brightening instantly to such a high degree Axel cringed a little. “But I am not taking care of anything, you are. So make sure you are prepared okay?” “Of course, can I get your credit card so I can book the hotel and our plan tickets?” “In my purse.” Isobel smiled and was about to float away as fast as possible but gripped the table to stop herself. “Thank you Axel.” “No problem.” Axel watched as Isobel zoomed out of the dining room. It seemed Isobel was growing up much too fast for her. Soon she’d be asking to go to school and would want her boyfriend to stay over for the night. Axel groaned. She was not looking forward to Isobel growing up but it was still nice to see the Frei doing her own thing. The guardian smiled, for better or for worst they were headed to Mexico.

Dreaming In Color Mexico was hot. After the initial shock of being in a plane and flying across what seemed like the world for Isobel, they’d arrived in the hottest place Isobel had ever been too. Axel had made sure they’d been properly dressed for it of course, but even then the frei was not ready. As soon as they’d left the cool air of the airport the heat had sucked her breath right out of her lungs and Axel wondering why Isobel was coughing so much. It hadn’t lasted very long, but long enough for the frei to feel the full on effects of the heat. Isobel had spared no expenses for this Mexico trip. Their hotel was top grade; the Moon Palace was a magnificent hotel that even impressed Axel. Everything was marble, the sun gloriously lighted everything and Isobel could not take her eyes off the color of the ocean. It was like everything around them was alive with life and color. It was certainly a major difference to back down where the cold and bleak white snow covered everything. Isobel wanted to stay here forever and never return home. The dream was short lived however when Axel tugged her towards their room. Their first few days were packed with places to see and visit and food to try. Well for Axel at least, Isobel only fed on the sun and the small sprays of water Axel gave her in the morning. Isobel didn’t dare venture in the water; she was still deathly afraid of it however she enjoyed watching Axel swim about. There was another reason Isobel had booked a trip to Mexico and it had to do with a trip to the Holi festival. They had to travel to Mexico city in another rand hotel from Cancun, but Axel seemed to have eased into the idea of a vacation. ----------------------- “Ready to head out to the festival?” Axel asked as she secured her bag across her shoulder. She wasn’t too sure about this festival; it didn’t seem at all quite like Isobel’s thing but Axel would indulge the frei. “Yes I am, the taxi should be here.” The taxi was waiting for them downstairs and Axel and Isobel both got inside. It wasn’t a very long trip, though as they drew closer to where the festival was taking place Axel began to have misgivings. The pounding techno music was certainly not up her ally, which meant there would be a bunch of teenagers in their early twenties there. The guardian also knew that Isobel was much for of a classical girl than she was a techno one. She also didn’t quite consider Isobel a teenager, not yet at least. She stayed quiet though, she would keep an eye on things and try to enjoy herself. Isobel paid the taxi and floated out of it. All around them young adults were smiling and entering the festival. Already from where she was she could see the sprays of color flying in the air. They caught her eye and held it a smiling slowly growing across her lips as she floated closer through the crowd. She had almost made it inside when someone stopped her. An older man with bulging muscles looked sternly at her. “Pass?” He questioned. “Oh right here,” Isobel turned and spotted Axel weaving through the younger people. She waved to her and waited for her guardian to arrive next to them. “Passes?” He repeated annoyed. “Right here.” Axel handed them to him. Isobel watched as he checked them and then gave them two bracelets. “Keep those on or you can’t come back in.” He ripped their passes and then looked to the next group. Axel handed Isobel her own bracelet before putting it on and helping Isobel with her own. Then they let the crowd push them to the next stand. Isobel wasn’t paying attention; her eyes were on the colors that were flying everywhere. Then she saw all the people that were already full of color. It was glorious to see. It didn’t take long for a girl to spot Isobel and come over to her while Axel bought them a bag of colorful dye. “Hi cutie!”She said smiling; Isobel didn’t give her more than 22 years of age. “Hello.” The girl dug into her vibrant red dye bag and used her fingers to mark Isobels face before sauntering off. “Axel?” Isobel turned to face her guardian. “Oh hey what happened to your face?” Axel handed Isobel a bag of dye. “I’m not sure, but let’s go!” The frei wasn’t really sure what exactly they were supposed to be doing here, everyone seemed to be dancing and throwing the dye around. None the less, the frei went in deeper bobbing with the music as she watched others do. It was interesting to watch, everyone was so young and full of life and enjoying themselves. Everyone was so colorful from all the bags being opened. Someone passed Axel and bombed her with a grassy green dye. Both began laughing and soon the colors were going off around them. Isobel wanted to save hers and axel was doing the same. They needed to find themselves a spot yet. The frei didn’t care much for the music, but the deeper in the crowd they venture the more she was excited and the more colorful she was. Purples, green, bright yellow, deep blues, and all kinds of colors were going off around her. Finally, Isobel grabbed onto her bags and began ripping into them and throwing them into the air. The crowds around her cheered and fueled her as she colored the sky with oranges and pinks. At some point Axel handed her the other bag and Isobel ripped into those as well. There were no words to describe the amount of fun Isobel had that day. The colors had been wonderful, they’d met some interesting people and she’d done it all with Axel by her side. At the end of the day when they returned home and Axel let Isobel shower first, even then the frei could not stop smiling. As the water slowly removed all the colors from her she created a rainbow in the water. She would always remember this day. It was glorious.

Father Isobel stared at her reflection. Her hair was up in a bun like she usually kept it with two braids on the side of her head and long bangs falling by her face. She gently touched the scales at the corner of her left eye and smiled softly. Her bolero was gone, her earrings stored away safely, and even her colorful scarf was packed neatly in her case. There was only her plain old Isobel left. All the frills were gone. There was a knock at the door and the frei turned slightly, Axel glanced inside the bedroom with a smile of her own before going to the door and opening it. “Jessica it’s so nice to see you again!” Axel hugged the woman before letting her in. “And I you. I hope your flight went well! I am quite excited to meet your daughter.” Taking a deep breath, Isobel floated out slowly of the bathroom, hands placed in front of her to quell her nervousness. Jessica turned upon seeing movement and her expression lit up immediately. “Oh my, are you Isobel?” “I am, it’s nice to finally meet you.” She floated closer and extended her hand. Jessica took it and shook gently. “Wow, I truly never expected this. My father will be so pleased to see you. Shall we go?” Isobel nodded and slung her purse over her shoulder before following both older women out the door. She felt like her heart was racing like she was out of breath. She had never been this nervous before, not even when she’d gone to a few job interviews. Axel wasn’t on edge about the whole thing at least, she seemed actually happy to see Jessica. It helped to keep Isobel calm but it wasn’t enough. She couldn’t believe she was about to meet the owner of her soul, the man who had taken care of her in another life. It was all very over whelming. The ride was longer than expected with Isobel asking every twenty or so minutes if they were there soon. Axel scolded her like a little child multiple times while Jessica laughed it off. She wanted to be there right now, right this minute. The frei almost wanted it to be all over so she could return back to her hotel room. It was too late to turn back now though. Isobel watched as the glamour of Mexico city faded into the more rural parts an she knew there was nowhere to run. It was now or never. Jessica stopped the car in front of what Isobel considered a very normal home. Jessica had explained that her grandfather lived by himself and didn’t have much money. Isobel felt sorry for him, Axel had taken his only companion away. How did she feel about that? Well, if Axel hadn’t taken the soul Isobel would never have been born. She felt sorry for the man but at the same time she was glad Axel had done it. Both passengers at the front got out of the car but Isobel stayed inside staring at the home. Axel finally turned when she noticed the frei wasn’t following and walked back to the car. “What’s wrong?” “I don’t want to go. I don’t want to do this.” “Isobel… You made it all the way here. You planned a whole trip around this very day.” Axel sighed. “Don’t be childish, get out of the car.” “No, I want to go home.” “Isobel this isn’t a doctor’s visit. We aren’t going anywhere until you get out of this car.” Jessica, who had been standing by the door and watching the interaction also walked back to the car. “Hey Isobel, you know my grandfather is very excited to meet you. It’s like he’s meeting on of his kids or grand kids. He’d be very sad if he didn’t meet you today.” She said in a soft coaxing voice. The kind of voice used on children. “I don’t know…” The frei was scared; her colors had grayed to match the interior of the car. She didn’t really understand what she was afraid of. The man didn’t even speak English, even if he said nasty things to her she wouldn’t understand. Slowly, Isobel opened the door and floated out. This wasn’t like her fear of water, this was something else altogether and she needed to face it. “Okay let’s go.” Jessica grabbed Isobels hand and made her way to the front door. She knocked once before entering the cool home. The inside was just as ordinary as the outside. There were numerous picture frames that lined the walls with pictures of smiling kids and pregnant woman next to their husbands. That single wall in front of the entry held the families whole history on it, all of their memories. Isobel was drawn to them but stayed hidden in the entry way. “Abuelo estamos aquí.” Jessica called, releasing Isobel’s hand. There as some noise from another room before a small man walked into view. He was short with dark brown skin and snow white hair. He stared at Isobel and Isobel stared right back at him unmoving. “Es ella?” “Sí , es ella.” “Hermosa.” “He says you are beautiful.” Isobel blushed under his stare, looking away and fidgeting with her hands. She was like a little child meeting her grandfather for the first time. “La otra señora es su madre, usted debe recordar ella. Su nombre es Axel , ella era mi planificador de la boda.” "Oh, yo la recuerdo bien. Ella es el que mató a Pedro.” “Abuelo…” “Sé que sé.” He waved his hands as he sighed and went to take a seat on the couch. “Yo, obviamente, no le guardo rencor ahora.” Jessica chuckled and moved into the living room and also took a sea ton the ouch while Axel went and sat on a lone chair. Isobel floated after Axel, holding onto her arm as she used to when she had been a new frei. “You can tell him I do appolgize for taking the soul. I think thought it’s a Little obvious that it went to good use?” “Don’t worry about it, al lis forgotten trust me.” Jessica laughed. “Ven aca.” The old man, her father tried to wave Isobel over but she only gripped onto Axel even more. He smiled at her but after a little while stopped. “Es como si yo estoy reuniendo un niño concebí pero estoy reuniendo por primera vez.” “Dale un poco de tiempo.” “He says he wished you would come closer and talk to him a Little bit.” Isobel pursed her lips a bit, eyeing him. She had to see him up close, she was only a few feet away… Isobel finally decided to float over. She did so lower thn usual so she would be at the same height as he was and took the hand he extended towards her. It made him smile and she smiled in return. “Cuál es tu nombre?” “Isobel.” “Isobel ... nombre muy bonito.” “He says you have a nice name.” “Alejandro,” he pointed to himself then pointed to the corner of his left eye. “Soul.” He said. “Yes that’s my soul showing through a little bit.” He nodded and spewed some more Spansh that Jessica translated. Axel watched quietly as Isobel warmed up to the previous owner of her soul. It was interesting to watch their interaction. Watching them Axel didn’t know why she had put up such a fight when it was obviously doing Isobel a lot of good. A lot of good things were starting to happen for them. Axel wondered when Isobel would grow her abdomen. She knew she still had a while to go, but she was curious. Axel smiled, she’d worry about such a thing later on.
