Name: Arian Emelyn Laith
Nickname: Ari, Rian (acceptable) or RiRi (mega disliked - it sounds like a girl's name)
Age: 16
Birthday: February 11
Sign: Aquarius
Gemstone: Amethyst
Blood Type: O-
Fav. Food: Home baked cookies (His cousin Saffy's sugar encrusted molasses spice cookies are the best) and mini cupcakes (the more sprinkles the better)
Hated Food: mayonnaise and canned tuna
School: Meadoview Public High School (Co-Ed)
Hobbies:Jewellery-making - Arian's always had a fascination with beads. In fact one of his lasting memories is of the strings of beads worn by his granny Nain. Despite the lack of design (mostly they were a jumble of wooden, silver and crystal beads with the odd bits of feathers, acorns or small pine cones), Nain never seemed to mind when Arian played with them and always seemed to have a story about where she'd found each component.
After a Design and Tech lesson where the class got to make and string their own Fimo (polymer clay) beads - Arian left his in the oven too long and burnt his - an interest in jewellery making was born.
It's not been plain sailing - burnt Fimo beads aside - Arian's early 'creations of genius' have pretty much consisted of stringing some beads together on a piece of string.
A year and a half's worth of perseverance plus a few self-taught wire-wrapping techniques (from a mixture of working through basic online tutorials and the odd book hired out furtively from the library) have meant that his pieces have started to improve – instead of being little more than some beads stuck on a piece of string they're actually starting to look
pretty.
Though Arian would probably deny it if it was pointed out to him part of his love of making jewellery is because it reminds him of happy times with his beloved Nain.
Despite the fact that crafting jewellery is Arian's major hobby and he spends a great deal of time on it Arian does have some other hobbies. This leads to:
Reading - Arian loves curling up with a book and spending an hour or so immersed in a good story.
Due to lack of space at his cousin's house, Arian tends to go to the local library to read.
As far as he's concerned libraries are great - a place where he can while away the hours with a good read without worrying about books permanently cluttering up what space he has at home.
While at the library, it's not unusual for Arian to check out the odd jewellery-making book and anything that catches his interest is usually photo-copied so he can take it home and experiment with it.
Arian's favourite genre is probably fantasy and many a stolen hour that should be spent on homework has been devoted to escaping into the world of the storyteller. He will only read stories which have
happy endings (if he has to skim the ending to check then so be it) – there’s enough unhappy endings in real life without having to read it in fiction.
Running - Arian took up running as a way of trying to please his grandparents (his grandfather in particular). After all running is a 'manly' sport is it not?
Somewhere along the line Arian realised that he actually
liked running - not competitively or anything - but because when he's out running he can let his thoughts drift.
Arian finds that running is a great distraction when you want to get away from things for a little bit since while he's running he doesn't have to think about little things such as keeping his grades decent at school.
It's also one the things that he does when he's miserable or in a funk - and hey, if he runs in the park, then at least he can admire the greenery.
Baking - Very much the guilty secret buried deep,
deep in the closet.
Cookies, cakes, cupcakes, meringues... As long as it's sweet, then Arian enjoys baking it.
Ingredients-wise he's a bit of a food snob - unrefined sugar, organic eggs... Well you get the picture.
Don't expect him to be the next Gaston Lenôtre though - pastry's one of those things that he's never managed to master. Trust me the bin's no stranger to his failed pastry attempts.
Baking is a good way of gaguing Arian's mood as he tends to bake a lot when miserable.
However baking, by no stretch of the imagination can be considered 'manly' and as such his enjoyment of it therefore remains very much in the closet.
Virtues:Manners maketh the man - Arian is polite, some might say almost extremely so
(this is a guy who will hold a lift for you, even though it's on the other side of a turntable that you've yet to go through). If he needs something from you, he'll make sure to have a 'please' somewhere in the request and if you choose to do that something for him then he'll remember to thank you for it.
He also hardly ever swears - this is not to say that Arian
never swears, but rather that this is unusual and he would have to be either extremely upset or extremely shocked.
This politeness has its roots in the time spent living with the parental grandparents - rudeness being a pet peeve of his grandmother in particular.
The end result has meant that Arian has had politeness literally drummed into him and it has stuck.
Arian's politeness is not limited to people who he likes. If someone he dislikes put themselves out doing something for him, then he will still thank them (even if the 'thank you' is through gritted teeth).
Put it this way –
even if he does not like you Arian will still be polite to you.
I wonder what I’ll get if I try combining this technique with those materials- Arian is good at taking a few basic things and combining them to make something new.
In terms of jewellery-making this means experimenting with different styles or materials.
Did you know that you can make some pretty nifty earrings with watch gears? In baking this means experimenting around with 'unusual' ingredients.
Red velvet cake made out of beetroot anyone? Arian is totally that student who doodles in the margin of their exercise book in class because they're bored. Doodles can be anything from little sketch designs of jewellery designs to try out to stick people doodles. A lot of doodles tend to be done in maths class. Maths isn't exactly Arian's strong point.
Experimenting with things to find out their limits is probably why Arian also likes doing chemistry experiments. Too bad he’s not as keen on doing the homework aspect that comes with it.
I'll keep your secrets - If you tell Arian something in confidence it will remain in confidence.
Planning a surprise party for a mutual friend? Want to tell someone your deepest secret?
Good or bad, Arian will keep it to himself.
Maybe it's because he's so guarded of his
own secrets that Arian is so very, very careful of the secrets of others.
Deep down however, Arian likes the fact that people trust him enough to share their confidences with him.
Don't expect him to admit to this out loud, however it seems to have meant enough to him to ensure that he's kept all secrets shared with him to himself.
I just want to protect my little corner of the world – Underneath the surface of Arian’s friendly politeness that Arian hides behind in day to day lies the capacity for an almost fierce protectiveness.
If you’re important enough to Arian for him to let you slip underneath his day to day wariness, then though he won’t say anything out loud, he’ll use whatever resources he has at his disposal to be there for you. From providing an ear if you need to vent
(he makes a surprisingly good listener) to trying to protect you to the best of his abilities if he thinks you’re in trouble, Arian will be there if he thinks you need him.
If this means following a friend into a situation that he thinks dangerous then so be it – Arian would much
much rather be hurt himself then let something bad happen to someone close to him.
Flaws:I’ll keep your secrets, but don’t expect me to share mine - Despite coming across as friendly enough in a kind of polite way - that's pretty much all that most people will get out of Arian. He will smile at you and say good morning in class and work on class projects cheerfully enough... But he won't really talk about himself and although he'll keep
your secrets. Heaven forbid that he actually shares any of his own with you. This can translate as Arian coming across as slightly distant.
Despite having some pretty serious trust issues it’s not impossible to get underneath the surface of friendly politeness that Arian hides behind in day to day life. This does not for moment mean however that he will make it particularly easy for you either. Arian’s the sort of person who tends to second guess other peoples' motives, looking for the hidden meaning behind their behaviour (even if none actually exists). It also means that he has a hard time reaching out to other people outside of a purely superficial context.
Ironically it means that someone who comes across as overly friendly (whether it’s genuine or not) will find it harder to slip beneath his guard, as he will constantly be questioning the motives for such behaviour.
This behaviour seems to have had its roots in the period around the deaths of his mother and sister, after his father pretty much abandoned him by dumping him on the parental grandparents.
Although not something readily talked about, Arian was really hurt by his father’s virtual abandonment of him at the time when he needed him the most.
Having the parental grandparents go on to later wash their hands off him has only served to hammer home the lesson that
‘just because someone’s family, doesn’t mean they won’t hurt you.’Even Saffy - to whom he at least feels a small sense of gratefulness towards for taking him in is not exempt – he’s already mostly convinced himself that she's only really doing it because of the cheques his father sends towards his maintenance.
Better bad things happen to me than someone else – Even when things are going well, Arian finds it hard to just relax and be happy. He’s the sort of person who actually feels guilty when good things are happening to him as opposed to other people.
Deep down Arian feels that that anything bad should happen to him. Note this doesn’t mean he actively wants bad things happening to him – it’s more of an
‘if bad things must happen, then better they should happen to him rather than someone else’ sort of thing.
Partly this can be linked to the poor image that he has of himself (he is not the sort of person who’d be able to stand in front of a mirror and list 10 positive things about himself), mostly however this leads back the unresolved guilt he feels over being the one who survived the car crash that killed both his mother and his sister.
Note that if someone important ended up getting hurt because of something he did (or did not do) or lost something of significance then Arian would feel gutted. The guilt felt would also feed into his guilt complex which would lead to long periods of himself beating himself over the head about it. It would also lead to periods of Arian would becoming very withdrawn.
Day to day wariness hides vulnerable heart – As mentioned earlier Arian finds it hard to trust people, which makes it hard for him to get close to people.
The side effect is that Arian has a tendancy to cling to what few friends he does have and though he tries not to show it - their comments and opinions are
extremely important to him and he’s more open with them than with anyone else.
Worse if you’re close enough for Arian to consider you a friend, then there’s not much he wouldn’t do for you. Although not something admitted openly, it does open Arian up to potentially being manipulated if someone he's let close figures it out.
Criticisms from someone considered a friend would cut Arian deeply. Having someone who he considers a friend later turn on him would completely gut him.
Should someone close to him happen to be in danger, then Arian will to try and protect them – even if this means going into situations where he’s clearly in over his head or where he could potentially end up getting hurt. In fact he’d much rather be the one getting hurt if it means those close to him will be okay.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONEyes: Grey with a few flecks of green and slightly tilted like a cat. Since he is short sighted Arian also wears a pair of glasses with a slightly-battered black frame which are somewhat crooked and have a tendency to slip down his nose.
Hair: Raven black. Worn in a style similar to this: [
x] - number 199, but with a 'chunkier' braid along the lines of this [
x] - number 149.
Face: Arian has a slight smattering of freckles across his nose. His face is heart-shaped with a perky nose and lips that are slightly thin.
Colouring-wise his skin is pale (but not unhealthily so).
Clothes: n/a school kid
Senshi Alias: Sailor Athene
Senshi Element: Beads
Challenge: 'Your defeat will be crafted with my beads.'Attacks:Sailor Scout Attack: Athene's Blue Beads of Nazar
Drawing on some of his energy, Sailor Athene clenches a fist and slowly raises a hand as he calls out the name of this attack.
The energy takes the form of a glowing ball made up of spiritual evil eye protector beads that floats in front of Athene’s raised hand.
(Think something a little like this: [
link] for the glowing ball of beads and an intangible-looking version of something like this: [
link] for the spiritual evil eye protector beads)
This can be directed towards someone with ill will towards Athene
(I’ve taken ill will to mean that the target wishes to cause some form of harm to Athene).
If the attack connects, then the ball separates into several spiritual evil eye protector beads that surround the target, causing a barrier that prevents the target from moving for about thirty seconds (or 1 post).
After thirty seconds/ 1 post, the beads shatter and disappear, heralding the end of the attack.
Duration: If the attack connects, then it lasts for 30 seconds (or 1 post), but Athene has to post twice before he can use it again.
Notes: Athene can use this attack up to three times a day.
Limits:1. This attack affects
anyone with ill will towards Athene (this includes other senshi, but not civilians)
2. The ill will must be towards Athene
himself – if Athene tries to direct the attack towards a target with no ill will towards him, then the attack will fail
3. Once Athene calls out his attack he has approx 5 - 7 seconds in which to direct the attack at a target, otherwise the attack will attempt to hit the nearest person wishing him ill will. If no one around wishes Athene ill will then the attack will automatically fail
4. If Athene is lucky opponents may momentarily be distracted when the beads shatter, however the shattering itself will not cause any damage as the beads are made of energy
5. The attack duration may end prematurely if the target is at a higher power level to Athene/ has an exceptionally strong will (under these circumstances duration is cut in half)
Super Sailor Scout Attack: Athene's White Beads of Dzi
Drawing on some of his energy, Super Sailor Athene clenches a fist and slowly raises a hand as he calls out the name of this attack.
The energy takes the form of a more complex-looking glowing ball made up of spiritual evil eye protector beads that floats in front of Athene’s raised hand. These spiritual beads look different to those used in Blue Beads of Nazar and are stronger than those used in the previous attack.
(Think something a little like this: [
link] for the glowing ball of beads and an intangible-looking version of something like this: [
link] for the spiritual evil eye protector beads)
This can be directed towards someone with ill will towards someone with ill will towards either Athene or one of his allies
(I’ve taken ill will to mean that the target wishes to cause some form of harm to either Athene or his chosen ally). If the attack connects, then the ball separates into several spiritual evil eye protector beads that surround the target, causing a barrier that prevents the target from moving for around for about sixty seconds (or 2 posts).
After sixty seconds/ 2 posts, the beads shatter and disappear, heralding the end of the attack.
Duration: If the attack connects, then it lasts for 1 minute (or 2 posts), but there has to be a 4 post interval before he can use it again.
Notes: Athene can use this attack up to two times a day.
Limits:1. This attack affects
anyone with ill will towards Athene (this includes other senshi, but not civilians)
2. This attack affects anyone with ill will towards one of Athene’s allies (this includes other senshi, but not civilians)
3. lf Athene tries to direct the attack towards a target with no ill will towards him (or his ally), then the attack will fail
4. The ally cannot have ill will towards Athene
5. Athene has to consider the person an ally at the time of using the attack
E.g. (i). Unknown Senshi helps Athene out with a youma - for duration of battle, attack will consider senshi an ally as long as they don't harbour ill will towards Athene
E.g. (ii). Athene in a battle with a Senshi who he's recently had some sort of a fight with - for duration of battle attack will not consider senshi to be an ally
6. If Athene is lucky opponents may momentarily be distracted when the beads shatter, however the shattering itself will not cause any damage as the beads are made up of energy
7. Once Athene calls out his attack he has approx 5 - 7 seconds in which to direct the attack at a target, otherwise the attack will attempt to hit the nearest person wishing him (or his ally) ill will. If neither condition is satisfied then the attack will automatically fail
8. The attack may end prematurely if the target is at a higher power level to Athene/ has an exceptionally strong will (min duration is 30 seconds)
Eternal Sailor Attack: Athene's Guardian Garland of Strength
For this attack, Eternal Sailor Athene closes his eyes and claps his hands together sharply while drawing on his energy.
As Athene slowly draws his hands apart the energy takes the form of a chain of beads in his hands.
There are 54 large beads in all (53 of the beads are the same size, the 54th bead is larger and a dark jade-green tassel hangs from this bead).
Focusing on the beads Athene can direct the energy within the beads towards up to three allies within a 3 metre radius of himself.
While Athene is holding the beads, the affected ally or allies will receive a boost in strength making them temporarily stronger.
Duration: This attack lasts 1 minute (or 2 posts).
Notes: 1. Athene can only use this attack once in one day - this attack takes half his energy to use and using it more than once would cause him to pass out.
2. Athene is vulnerable while using this attack as he must be holding the beads for the attack to work.
3. The beads are quite large and therefore quite heavy and so although Athene can move around while holding the beads his mobility will be reduced.
4. The beads will disappear after a minute, at this point the attack ends.
Limits: 1. The strength boost received depends on the amount of allies this attack is used on:
- For 1 ally it gives a strength boost of +1/2
- For 2 allies it gives a strength boost of +1/4 each
- For 3 allies it gives a strength boost of +1/6 each
2. Athene cannot use this attack on himself.
3. Athene can use this attack on guardian cats, but
not when they are in cat form.
4. Athene cannot use this attack on a member of the Negaverse or civilians (even if he would want to do so).
5. Athene must be able to see the ally if he wants this attack to affect them.
6. If for any reason Athene drops the beads before the minute is up, then they will disappear and the attack will end.
Other notes
As Athene's attacks come from his own energy they don't stack very well between power stages. I kind of pictured that he'd be able to use attacks as follows:
Senshi attack
Three times per day (max), Athene must post twice before using again
Super Senshi attack
Two times per day (max), Athene must post four times before using again
or
He can use his Super Senshi attack once and his Senshi attack once per day, but must post twice before using the next attack
Eternal Senshi attack
Once a day (since it takes half his energy, using it more than that would cause him to keel over)
He can use his Senshi attack once in addition to his Eternal attack, but it would leave him pretty tired (again he must post twice before using the next attack)Inspiration Images:~ I thought a sash of similar style to
this but maybe with a beaded fringe or something instead of a bow would be pretty nifty
~ An earring similar to
one of these? Kind of something he'd make and wear
~ Some sort of beaded hair-tie would be nifty too
~ Nifty boots with beads?
