My boyfriend is the former field commander his senior year and he plays multiple instruments. We both play bass guitar and percussion instruments, but in band he played French Horn and I played Bari Sax when we dated his senior year. He's in college for Jazz Guitar at the moment though.

None of the people in my band date in the same section for some reason. I have yet to see anything like that. Even in the percussion. And it's always a weird combo that you know or feel will fail anyway. Once we had a sax and percussionist (lasted about three weeks), baritone and flute (On-again-off-again with a couple months at a time), colorguard and sax (lasted two weeks at most), and so on. Mine has been the only stable one period. Everyone else just insists on band relationships. The only one that comes close to mine that is still going on is about 8 months. Mine's been going on for 2 this November.

I've seen mostly different sections.
I've dated in my section, (I'm alto sax, he was a tenor sax) but I've also dated a clarinet player, and a trumpet player.
I actually like out barri sax player. @_@ I'm drawn to sax players, I suppose.
Aaand our lead snare drum player dates girls in the wind section. xD (he's dated like, I wanna say half the girls in band, but I know it's an exaggeration. xD)

There are only a few couples in our marching band that I know of. I never really date anybody in marching band because ours is like a soap opera.

I find that usually it's a woodwind-brass pairing when it comes to couples. For example, I am a flute and I date a french horn player and ditto for my friend. There was a clarinet-trumpet couple, but that was a somewhat complicated relationship to be vague. There were a few percussion-percussion couples, but they're not wind instruments and plus they play a variety of instruments.

Maybe it's the personality that goes with the instrument that makes them so compatible?

I used to date a clarinet player, and I play Euphonium. It didn't work out so well between us. I don't think having a relationship with a member in the band from a different section has to do with the success of the relationship itself. It's more of how personality matches up.

I think some of the reason behind people not dating others in their section has to deal with competition for chairs and other things along those lines. I think of everyone in the low brass like my own family, brothers and sisters. Dating one of my "brothers" would be a little awkward seeing as we mutually find each other as siblings and nothing more.

It happened quite a bit in my school. Funniest one, which didn't last too long, was one of my drummer friends was dating a flute player, hahah. Biggest polar opposites of the band with the drummers being crazy and the flute players were usually timid.

I'm dating a piccolo...and I play trombone

Well it doesn't quite count since our relationship was establish before we started trying to play together, but my girlfriend and I play guitar and drums respectively. We tried getting something going with it but I couldn't commit at the time since I just had too much going on sweatdrop

Relationships are a yes ALways a different instrument. And there is a bass drummer who has hit on every girl in the band an in the school so yea. Hes a player.

We rarely have intersection dating, excpt for some reason hte baritones.

The longest relationship i know of is a clarient player and bari sax who also plays bass clarinet. Wait...does that count as intersection?

Percussion tends to date outside of band.Although we do have a percussionXtrumpet couple

We have a few baritonesXbaritone, and a wanted tromboneXtrumpet. We have a tenor saxXclarinet going on with one of the dms, and the head dm is a tomboneXguard. Last year, all the freshman girls tried to get with the dms and these two tuba players. So we had a lot of different tuba and sax odd couples.

Tuba couples, I've seen TubaXoboe and tubaXflute.

Clarinets arent big with dating I've noticed. Most of our section is guys, well, half exactly. One girl dates outside of band, i'm not that into dating right now(I prefer making friends, it lasts longer), and then we have the 3 year old clarinetXbari sax couple i stated earlier, and the most recent ClariXtenor sax dm couple.

There was only one couple in my band who dated within their section, and they decided that they would sparate the two, so during band period, after school practices, and before and while competing at festivals they would just go about their lives like they weren't dating and when they were not at a band function they didn't talk about section politics. The only exception was during awards cerimonies because there was no way it could hurt them then, just unify them. It really worked for them because when one got section leader it didn't affect their relationship. As far as Iknow, they are still together. Every other band couple I can remeber was cross sectional.

All of the couples in my high school band, save one, were/are different-instrument couples. My girlfriend plays trumpet and I play horn, so even with me it's that way too. xD

You bring up a good point that band couples are usually between different instruments! I never really noticed that before. Let's see, we have a whole bunch of band couples. We have a flute x trumpet couple that has been going out for the longest time, and some of my good friends are in a tenor sax x french horn relationship and a flute x bari sax relationship. We also have a percussionist x clarinet couple. Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Oh yeah, and I'm a saxophonist who is dating a euphonium player. wink
