"Yeeeeeey thank you very much Granddaddy Ari!" Leefox quickly nuzzled Granddaddy Ari, and then looked to Kikifox to lead her to where her--no, their, they were sharing family now!--their sister Thea was!

Ricky giggled and nuzzled Granddaddy Ari's other cheek, then bounded off in the right direction. "This way, this way!"
Soon, they were there, and Ricky spotted her paintsplattered dister.
"Thea! TheaTheaThea! Lookit! Look! It's Leefox! Thea!"
Thea looked up from her place under the big tree, raising her eyebrows. "I can see that?" Standing up and tilting her head curiously. "Nice to meet you?"
Thea was surprised--she hadn't heard much from her younger sister lately, but it wasn't like her to bring some random friend along...
Actually. It was just like her.
"Does Ari know you're--"
"Course he does! Look, Leefox, this is my--our-- sister, Thea!"
"Our?" Thea repeated, blinking in surprise. "Are you two mated?" A smile crept to Thea's lips: so her baby sister had a mate.
"Wha--! No!" Ricky giggled. "We're just bestybest friends! And we're sharing faaamily! Silly Thea, we're not mates!" Then Ricky whispered to Leefox, "She's silly."

Leefox giggled and whispered back "Very silly."
Well she kind of did want a mate but she didn't even know how to go looking for one and anyway Pink Mommy had said that "when you find one, you'll know" and Leefox didn't know yet so she guessed she hadn't found a mate yet. Which was kind of sad, but that was okay, because she still had plenty of time to go looking! Pink Mommy hadn't found Blue Mommy right away, after all!

Ricky giggled and shook her head. "You're silly, sissy. Leefox is my bestest friend, not my mate!" Which was a little tiny bit sad, because she loved spending time with Leefox and she liked the thought of spending lots more time with her.
But nnnaaaahh. That was silly!
Thea smiled to herself--she had seen many kits grow to adult foxes, go through the stages of denial befor eventually...
She shook her head, then headtilted a little. "Well, how long have you two been...bestest friends?"

"Uuuuuuum..." Leefox thought about it really really really hard. "A week! We've been bestie bestest best friends ever for a whooooole week!" She beamed at Thea--at her new sister!

Thea thought for a few moments, then chuckled softly. "You know, usually, when two people join their families together it's because they're mates." So she was making the same point again. So what. "You two seem as happy...if not happier...than most mated couples out there." Thea complimented with a soft, wry smile. Before she could get lost in her mind, though, Ricky burst through her thoughts.
"Really? You mean it, Thea?"
"Of course I do. I think you two would...be a nice couple."
Ricky looked at Leefox, then back at Thea, then at Leefox again. "What do you think, Leefox?" Ricky tilted her head slightly to one side, the black halo above her head moving with her. Gosh, what if Leefox said no! What if Leefox hated her now...oh now!
"But um don't um it's okay if um you don't think um so 'cause then we can still just be bestest best friends with shared family right? Right?" The words tumbled out in a rush, Ricky's purple eyes widening to the size of golfballs. "Right?"

Lee's eyes widened when sissy-Thea said that made she and Kikifox could be mates. Butbutbut! But Pink Mommy and Blue Mommy had always said that when you met the right fox you' just know and she liked Kikifox lots and lots and lots and lots--dur, they were besty best bestest friends!--but she didn't just know andandandand...!
But!
But also!
But Pink Mommy and Blue Mommy also said that having a mate was like having a besty best bestest friend too, and well duh that was what she and Kikifox were.
So...
So because they were already besty best bestest friends, did that mean they were already mates too?
Leefox was confused, and wanted her mommies. They would know exactly what to do!
As fate would have it, Sigal had just finished speaking with her father, and had come over to see how her daughter, and her daughter's 'besty-best-bestest-friend' were doing...
Leefox nearly pounced Pink Mommy when she saw her. "Mommymommymommyweneedtotalk," Lee said, managing to turn a whole sentence into just one word.
"About what?" Sigal asked, having little trouble deciphering what her daughter had just said.
"Well Sissy-Thea said that most people don't combine families 'less they're mates and that Kikifox and I would be great mates and we're like besty best bestest friends and you and Blue Mommy always said that was what having a mate was like butbutbut I don't just know like you and Blue Mommy always sad I wooooooould!"
Sigal smiled gently at her daughter. "Did we ever say you'd know just as soon as you met?"
Actually, Lee had forgotten all about that part, too. "Nooooooo?"
"Well, can you see yourself spending the rest of your life with Ricky?"
"Yeah!" Well duh, she and Kikifox were besty best bestest friends!
"Well, that sounds a lot like mates to me already," Sigal beamed at her daughter.
"Really?"
"Really."
"KIKIFOX, WE'RE GONNA BE MATES!"
Sigal smiled at the pair of them. "Congratulations."

Thea watched in bemusement as the mother and daughter spoke, but she was quickly distracted by Ricky padding over to her side and whispering worriedly,
"What if she doesn't want to be mates?"
Thea chuckled softly and nuzzled against her sister's cheek. "Then I would imagine that you two will still be 'bestest best friends'," Thea assured her--normally, if it were any other fox and any other pair, she would have given different advice (probably more along the lines of 'there's more birds in the air, you'll make other friends'), but she couldn't do that to Ricky. She would probably cry for a week at the thought of loosing her bestest best friend.
Shaking her head to clear it, Thea nudged Ricky gently. "Looks like the decision has been m--"
"WE ARE?!" Ricky interrupted, a huge grin lighting her face as she ran from Thea to Leefox. Without even waiting for an answer, she pounced, sending them both rolling and laughing away from their maternal figures.
"We're gonna be mates, we're gonna be mates!" Ricky sang-laughed as they rolled--she realized, then, that she didn't think she'd ever been this happy, not ever.

Leefox didn't think she'd been this happy, not ever--not even when she and Kikifox first met and decided they were going to be besty-best-bestest friends!
"Kikifox, we should totally go tell everyone we're mates now--we need to tell Blue Mommy and Grandaddy Ari and Wesley and Meadow and Meade and Breeze and, uh, Conny and and aaaaaand...?" she looked over to Kikifox, trying to remember who else was in her new, now even bigger family that they needed to tell!

"Yea, we'll tell everybody!" Kikifox agreed happily, the grin still plastered on her face. "Umumum...um...well we could tell my sorta-Aunty Marina but she lives faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away...Oh! My sorta-Uncle Sparkio and my cousins andandand I dunno but you're my mate ohmygosh!"
Giggling, she leaned over to her mate (!!!!) and licked her cheek, feeling a delightful swirl of butterflies in her tummy. "Now we'll be bestest friends foreverest!"

For forever? Leefox gasped--she never really thought about for forever (or even the future) and it was such a huuuuuuge time--it was for forever and ever and ever and ever--and she would get to spend all of it with her besty best friend--with her mate and and and and--!
For once in her life, Lee was silent, too full of happiness to speak.

Ricky sighed happily as she rested her head against Leefox--her mate!--and nodded, silently understanding why her mate (!) was being so uncharacteristically silent.
"Forever," Ricky repeated in a happy sigh, closing her eyes contentedly. Today was the best day ever.

Sigal was a bit hesitant to interrupt the happy new couple, but she just somehow had the feeling if she didn't, they would be there all day. And then some.
"So, are you going to go visit your aunt and uncle, even if they do live far away?" Sigal prompted.
"Mm," Leefox said. She was so happy right now and she didn't want to have to think about going anywhere.
But also she was so happy of course she wanted to go and tell everyone about it. And and meet her new family too!
"Yeah. Later?" she asked Kikifox--her mate!--hoping she would understand.

Ricky nodded, resting her head back against Leefox. "Later. A lot later, 'cause I don't wanna move,"
And she really didn't. She couldn't remember ever wanting to not move before--all her life, it had been about finding the next thrill, the next fun, the next fox, the next place to explore. She had fairly exhausted Thea and Conny, even when they were all kits.
And now...Well, she thought, I guess I found my last thrill. Somehow, she was okay with that--she felt no qualms, no worry at all about spending every waking second with her Leefox, 'cause they were mates and that's what mates did.
Absently, Kikifox wound her tail through Leefox's, so that the fluffy parts got all tangled together just right, so they really would be together forever.
