Has Gaia gone a little too PC?
Yes. It's obviously a Christmas tree. Calling it a "Holiday Tree" isn't going to change that.
No. The tree has nothing to do with Christianity, and is enjoyed by everyone, regardless of religion. The name was outdated.
...look, I'm just here for the presents. >_>

Actually, I'm kinda curious.

Start!

I've been on Gaia for six years. You thought Christmas commercialism IRL pissed me off? I get even more pissed off that it's on Gaia too. RESPECT SOME OF THE OTHER RELIGIONS FOR ******** SAKE!

Just some gelt or a menorah or a dreidel, those aren't that hard to draw! D:

>.> I'm not jewish, but I think those items would be cool. An item I especially would like would be the beanie hat thing (which name escapes me.).

But TIM is right. Christmas; It's a more comercialized holiday. While as Hanukkah isn't really. Why? Money. Shop owners want to make money. Thats why. And isn't that a good thing? Would you really want your holiday as stupidly overgrown as ours has become? That stupid fat man is outrageous nowadays. He pops up around august and doesn't go away until valentines day area. How about a talking menorah who pops up on tv and tells you to buy presents like crazy for the 8 nights to come? Think about it.

A little girl approached my mom the other day and my mom asked her if santa was coming to her house. This girl knew about santa but her biological parent was either broke or didn't care to give her children presents on ANY holiday. So the little girl replied "Santa won't come to my house." And my mom got presents and gave them to her new mom so that little girl would have santa presents. Not anything bad about that. But the commercialisation of santa is crazy. It makes little children cry when they don't get presents because they think they've been bad. Jus sayin.

Lolz, anyone who would seriously argue about that should be on the Bill O'Reily show.

...

No.

NOBODY should be on the Bill O'Reily show.

NOT EVEN BILL O'REILY.

Meh.... I disagree with both comments.

While we're on the topic and I've been an SF resident for a few years I'd like to voice some of my opinions on the topic.

Gaia celebrates Xmas, not Christmas, which is what we're led to believe is the commercialized form of the holiday. Whereas Christmas would be the religious form. Gaia Xmas has nothing to do with baby Jesus in a manger with three magi bringing him gifts and there is no "rum pum pum pum" of any little drummer boy going on.

However since Hanukkah (Chanukkah) isn't as commercialized as Christmas, I think it would be somewhat awkward to celebrate. I mean, Hanukkah is a holiday that has not really been removed from it's religious traditions.

I keep hearing this repeated over and over. Did one of the administrators say this, or is it just one of those "lol, everyone knows this," kind of things?

I think it became Site Feedback precedent.

That due to a large ammount of complaints Christ was officialy removed from Christmas. In other words. People wanted to take over a holiday and change it's name. TIM, its the movement your with. People took the name and decided to take it apart. Ridiculous as it may seem, thats what happened. They renamed a holiday because they didn't agree with the religion.

Or rather, thats what I take Crim means.

Good guess. I mean that it's the standard answer that made the most sense when every holiday season the question of "why doesn't Gaia celebrate MY winter holiday?" comes up. I can't say that it's written into Gaia law... but I think it's a decent enough explanation.

I don't think there was ever a time when Xmas was called Christmas on Gaia... unless my memory fails me.... and I've been through five Gaia Xmas events... unless my memory fails.

-edit- Scratch that, there is the Gambino Christmas journal.

EI report
Pastor Gork: A winter celebration! I love it! Our Fellowship hosts a nonspecific winter holiday every year, wherein we exchange gifts, sing nondenominational songs and celebrate the birth of the various and sundry messiahs we may or may not worship.

Once again, that's completely not true. Xmas = Christmas. X means Christ. Xmas is pronounced like Christmas. It's not a renaming, it's an abbreviation--albeit an archaic one.

I'd have to disagree with you there boss. Well... sorta.

While I concede that Xmas and Christmas are pretty much the same thing, I say that the meaning of Christmas itself has changed with time. I think Christmas is now largely celebrated as a commercialized version, not so much a religious holiday.

At my church, we still wave around candles on Christmas. I mean, the cheap ones that usually end up burning my finger, but that the heck.

Besides it was just a guess. xD Crim told me the true story. And he's right on this one. it's become more comercialized then staying with its religious beginings.
