-Assessment Log-

Day Eighty-Seven

Anoki Kenelm is slowly progressing. He is still far too inquisitive for his own good, and continues questioning the world. This last trait may prove useful as he continues his lessons, as constant questioning is the only way to true change.

His stuttering condition has not yet rectified itself, however I notice that in some situations, especially when he is attentive, it lessens somewhat. However, when he is nervous or scared, he can be quite difficult to understand. This in turn makes him more anxious, and so the cycle continues, yet he still shows no signs of any true attempts at changing it.

One noticeable change is that Anoki Kenelm is becoming more studious. He spends more time reading, and practicing his writing. Much of this is my own tutelage at work, making sure he catches up to other children his age. Yet I believe some is his own will, his own wish to improve. His desire to better himself is most encouraging, and I have come to believe that he might one day forge greatness for himself. His attitude, however, is still meek and unsure, and he is still unsettled around strangers.

While I was away on business some time ago, Anoki Kenelm somehow managed to break his already sprained wrist. It is now in a more solid cast which is almost always in a sling. This does a lot to restrict his movement, though on the bright side it leads him to use his other hand, as before he was showing signs of being left-handed. It also makes him more cautious around unfamiliar objects and settings. In the long run, this injury might prove to be an excellent learning experience.

He has met several children, including the child of one of my fellow instructors, and has participated in a D-Corp sponsored event during the Saint Patrick's Day festivities. All of his endeavors have started out shakily but ended up splendidly for him, as far as I can tell, yet this does nothing to boost his initial confidence and enthusiasm.

All in all, Anoki Kenelm shows signs of improvement, however I do forsee some problems ahead. These however will likely be miniscule, and I am for the most part pleased with his progress thus far.

I admit... I do wish he would settle down more.

[hidden within]

"Anoki Kenelm, come here please."

Anoki flinched at the sound of his mother's voice. Judging by the tone, it was either her "you did something wrong" voice or her "you'd better not mess this up" voice. Neither of them was very promising. Maybe if he stalled, she would forget whatever she wanted to say. It worked sometimes, usually when Mahou distracted her by accident.

"Al-almost d-done with th-this p-page." He held up his book one-handedly, so that the cover nearly flopped onto his head. It was a pretty good book too, about dragons and a kid who got to ride on them. Mostly it was full of fun stuff like adventures, but Raven had given Anoki the book in the hopes that he could pick up a few pointers. So far, all he'd learned was to hold on tight.

Did the boy think she had all day? "Now please," Raven called again from her study, voice painting a picture of patience stretched dangerously thin.

Why couldn't he ever get that trick to work? Flinching already, the ibex set his book upside down on the coffee table and tiptoed towards Raven's study, knocking lightly on the door when he reached it.

"Yes yes, come in."

It was only on rare occasions that Anoki was allowed into the study, much less the workrooms inside it. To his surprise, one of the doors was open, and Raven was standing beside it, waving for him to join her. At first he was frozen, both from the shock and from watching the room. There were so many interesting things in there! Bookshelves lined all the walls, papers were buried under crystals and potted plants and bits of clay and metals on solid wooden tables. The open door had a ripped piece of parchment tacked to the back, and was curling at the bottom.

"Oh, do walk faster Anoki Kenelm. There is something I must show you, and I would like to get it done." Raven wondered yet again if D-Corp had given her this particular child because they knew he would be so... slow. It was not unlikely. When the boy finally reached the door, she grabbed his hand and pulled him inside, shutting the door behind them.

This chamber was darker and windowless. It too was lined with shelves, however these contained boxes, lamp bases, tiny silver spoons, heavy brass keys, and dozens of other seemingly random objects, all antiques. In the middle of the small room was a surprisingly bare table. It contained a single notebook, a lamp with a built-in magnifying lens, and just enough room for any one of the objects in the room.

There was only one chair, which Raven sat in herself after retrieving one of the objects from a shelf near the door. It was a large wooden box, plainer than most of the other antiques, made of polished cherry wood with ebony inlay, and a stylized triangle in the center. Raven ran her hands over it affectionately, then waved Anoki over.

"Take a good look at this box," she instructed.

It was pretty enough. Some of the colors looked like him, which was nice. But Anoki still couldn't figure out why he had been called in to the dark room, and why he was being asked to look at the box.

"It's n-nice."

"Study it well. I am asking you to learn it by sight, so that you can pick it out, and hide it if necessary." Suddenly realizing that she might be confusing the child, Raven slowed down and backed up. "Do you remember when I went out for the day, and you stayed with the people at the daycare center?"

Anoki nodded. It had definitely been a memorable day.

That was a start. "While you were there, I was out looking for materia. And I found this. It was damaged rather badly, and I'm quite certain that the shopkeeper did not know its value. It is extremely important. However, no one else must know I have it."

All the talk was boring Anoki. "C-can I op-pen it?"

"What? Yes, go ahead." Was he even listening? He would have to, it was integral to her plans. Normally Raven would have preferred depending on someone more reliable, but in this case she didn't have much of a choice. "Please do pay attention Anoki Kenelm, this is quite important. You see, if anyone discovers that this box is in my posession, they will try to obtain it. And I cannot have that."

Only half listening, Anoki lifted the lid of the box. The inside had a removable lining of black velvet that absorbed all nearby light. Trying to look attentive and explore at the same time, he looked Raven in the eye and slid one hand under the lining, touching the smooth wood, feeling the well-built corners.

His fingers closed around a cold, bumpy object.

"Mahou or myself would be too obvious. So if anyone asks about the box, it will be up to you to hide it. We will set a place for it shortly. Do you understand?"

What was it? Making sure to keep his find hidden- the box lid made a good screen- Anoki examined the object. It was small enough to fit in his hand, although clumsily, and seemed to be a small stone carving. Or possibly two stone carvings intertwined. One of them had delicate wings, the other was simply dark and forboding.

"Anoki Kenelm, answer me! Do you understand?"

"Uh?" Quickly Anoki closed his fingers around the object again and slid it into his pocket. "O-o-okay."

Raven doubted he really did, but they would go over it again once she found a suitable hiding spot. She couldn't manage it again that day. All of the explaining thus far had tired her out, and she just wanted to do a nice relaxing volatile experiment. "Very well then. You are excused."

"K-kay." Even though being trusted by his mama was cool, the room made Anoki uneasy, and he was all too ready to take his leave. As soon as the second door closed itself behind him, he ran all the way to his bedroom and flopped over on the bed. After another few moments he wormed his way under the covers. Only then did it feel safe enough for him to bring out the small sculpture.

It really was pretty. In a sort of gothic way. Hopefully his mama wouldn't mind him taking it. But then, he only really wanted to see it better. He would give it back eventually, of course.

But for the time being, it was his, to do as he pleased with.

Deer Dear Journal

Today is a hollyday holiday called Easter. Mahou says that a big bunny comes out on Easter and gives presnt presents to kids. The Easter bunny gave me candy and this journal. Mahou is helping me rite write in it. Mama Ray says I am getting better but my spelling isnt so good. Mahou says what words are rite right and which ones I need to spell better.

Mama Ray had to go to do stuff becaws because she has to start teaching soon. Today Mahou took me to a park where other kids are looking for Easter eggs. It is like that hunt we did for that other holiday, ST Patrik Patrick's Day. This time I found three eggs by mysh myself. One had candy in it and one had a big rownd round marbl.e. Mahou took the other to save for latir later. I hope it has something cool.

It is a day with lots of sun and not lots of clouds. I had otmeal oatmeal for brekfast breakfast and egg salad and apples for lunch. It is darker now. Mahou says we have to go back home. Mama Ray is making spahgety pasketi spagetty pasta for dinner. Maybe Mahou will let me have my other egg for desert dessert.

I will write again.

[welcome diversion]

Raven sat at the table in the living room, with a small stack of mail on one side of her and a folder filled with stationary in the other. In front of her were two letters, one folded and slightly wrinkled, addressed to her, and the other crisp and fresh, which she was putting the final touches on.

Apparently it was a custom for the family to work together. Mahou was busy with something involving cloth and pointy pins and a big wood ring, and his mama was writing things. They had put Anoki to work on handwriting, which was something he needed to improve. He was a bit clumsy with the pen- it felt better in his other hand, but that one was still in the cast- so writing was slow. Very slow.

"'M b-bored," he complained.

Looking down from her embroidery, Mahou smiled kindly. "It's not the most fun thing, but it's very helpful to be able to write neatly."

"B-boring," Anoki repeated. All he was doing was writing out the alphabet again and again, copying the one that Mama Ray had written at the top of the page. Her handwriting was pretty, he had to admit, but just doing the alphabet over and over was no fun. He fidgeted, then looked at Raven.

"Continue your work Anoki Kenelm." Raven's eyes never left the paper. Once she stopped she blew on it to dry the ink, folded it neatly, and put it in an already addressed envelope.

He did so, but not without pouting. Then an idea came to him. Mama Ray said he had to work, but not that he could only write out alphabets...

First he wrote his name. Then Mama Ray's and Mahou's, looking at the letters next to him for help spelling. Then he listed everything he had to eat that day and the day before- salad, and corn, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and oatmeal, and more salad, and spaghetti with tomato sauce. The sauce had a fancier name, but Anoki couldn't remember how to spell it.

Satisfied that the boy was working, Raven selected an unopened letter and looked at the envelope. No postmark. It must have been hand delivered then. Scowling, she opened it and read the first few lines. What did D-Corp want with her this time?

Mahou noticed the change in mood first. "Is everything alright, Raven?"

It was. And once she read more, her scowl lifted, though she did not smile. She coughed lightly to get Anoki's attention. "This is about you, Anoki Kenelm, so I suggest you listen.

"Dear Professor Millner.

We apologize for the lengthy delay in your child recieving his/her dragon egg. Due to the risky and dangerous nature of this branch of the facility, accidents often happen that prevent regularly scheduled events from going through as planned.

It is with great delight that we announce the next set of tours of the incubation facilities. Your child has been placed in the second of three groups. You are invited to accompany your child on their first visit to see his/her dragon, and hope that it will be a memorable one.

Again, we apologize for the delay, and thank you for your patience.

Thank you, D-Corp Staff"

Anoki's mind had caught on one word early on. "Dr-dragon?"

"It seems that you are finally to recieve your egg, Anoki Kenelm. We will have to prepare for this. Mahou, please take care of making sure he is ready this evening."

It was difficult to not laugh, but Mahou couldn't help smile. "Yes Raven. Come on Anoki, let's get ready."

"D-dragon!" It was all Anoki would say, and he kept repeating it. He put down his pen, hopped off the chair, more than happy to leave the boring writing behind. "Dragon!"

Raven shook her head. She would have to work on his speech, and on his tone. Curious, she picked up the sheet of paper he had been using and studied it. There were two full repititions of the alphabet there. Halfway through the third, at K, it stopped and began a list of seemingly meaningless words, mostly names and foods.

The handwriting had improved slightly, but that was no longer the point. There was more work to be done on him, and this to make sure he would listen. No more improvisation. It was her way or the proverbial highway.

Setting the sheet back on the table, Raven sighed and went off to do her own preparing. It would be an interesting visit, if nothing else.

[raw space]

Mahou looked away from her latest project, set down her needle and thread, and looked at Anoki expectantly. "So, did you decide to return them yet?"

Trying his best to not look guilty, Anoki held out both of his hands. They held several small objects- a thimble, a silver spoon, a clinky gold keychain with several keys on it, a small antique clock, and a bead bracelet. "M's-sorry," he mumbled, unable to look Mahou in the eye.

"Good," the elf said sternly, then smiled. "Do you remember the other end of our deal, then?" Since she clearly wasn't going to finish her embroidery anytime soon, she tucked it away in a small wicker basket and set it aside. It didn't matter much. Taking care of Anoki could be tedious, but when she got to do fun projects with him she was willing to put aside her own for awhile.

Anoki nodded, perking up only slightly. He'd tried to take things that people didn't use much, like the clock and the spoon. But he wanted to get as many shiny things as possible so that when it hatched, it would be happy and like him. Having to return them did not make the ibex happy, but there was at least a bonus. "You-re g-g-gonna help m-me m-make a sp-space for d-dragon, r-right?"

"That's right." Taking Anoki's free hand, Mahou headed for the boy's bedroom and opened the door. The room was remarkably clean, and Mahou suspected that he'd been tidying it up while getting all the objects he "borrowed." At least it meant he was earnest in his willing to work, she supposed.

Taking the lead, Anoki scrambled into the room and planted himself in a spot by the window. "S-so d-dragon can h-have s-sun. And a-a-air."

It looked like Anoki'd done some research. "Why sun and air?" Mahou asked curiously.

"C-cause fire dr-dragons l-look l-like sun a-a-and f-fire. A-and f-fire needs a-air." Of course, the fact that Anoki's window overlooked a small pond didn't hurt either. If the dragon or anything else caught fire, he wanted to put it out, and fast. Fire hurt! Hopefully the dragon wouldn't set anything ablaze.

"Excellent," Mahou commented. "Now, you've done a good job clearing the space. We should wash it and paint it... and if you like, we can decorate it in a way you think your dragon might like. Hopefully it would be something you would enjoy as well. Do you have any ideas?"

Did he ever! Anoki would have rubbed his hands together, if one hadn't been in a sling. Instead he nodded eagerly. They were going to make this the best place ever for his dragon!

~~~
Several hours later, Raven came through the front door. Dropping her bag on the nearest chair rather uncharacteristically, she headed for the kitchen, and was surprised to find it empty. The laundry room was the same. "Mahou?"
"We're in Anoki's room," Mahou's voice called from a distance, followed by a light shirek.
Frowning, Raven set off for the room in question. She threw open the door, took one look around, and all but cried "What is the meaning of this?"
The room itself had been painted a bright shade of sky blue some months ago at Anoki's request. The area near the window, however, was completely transformed. A large brown peak was painted over the wall, ending near the ceiling in a cap of white that actually sparkled, due to glitter mixed in the paint. Behind the peak was a semicircle of yellow and orange and red, the colors swirling together majestically, with sharply pointed rays shooting out from all sides. It wasn't a particularly realistic sun, but it did manage to get its point across, and there was even more glitter making it almost look as if the sun was really shining. The window seat had been painted as well, brown and green, to resemble the treetops surrounding the base of the mountain. Mahou wanted to make the ledge look like clouds, but Anoki had convinced her that the sun wouldn't make sense above the clouds.
Both woman and child were covered with paint. Anoki didn't seem to care, however, and ran towards Raven when she came in, only halting at her tone. "Y-you l-l-like it?"
Raven ignored Anoki completely, setting her gaze on the now multicolored elf behind him. "Mahou, please explain this."
"I said I would assist Anoki Kenelm in creating a space for his dragon. You know that magical creatures work better in an environment they're uniquely attuned to. I thought it might aid in the bonding process as well." Mahou did not look upset by the demand for explanation, though inside there was a touch of worry. Had she done the wrong thing, rewarding misbehavior? But he had returned the missing items...
"And such a blatant waste of material, for a mere schoolboy friendship?" Raven looked for a moment like she might explode. It wasn't just the paint and glitter that was wasted, but the time. Decorating that alcove had to be time consuming, and surely both Mahou and Anoki had fallen behind on their work. They would both have to get cleaned up as well.
But the thing that REALLY bothered Raven is that the two had conspired to do this without any input from her. They were blatantly disregarding the orders she had left them.
Anoki saw the anger in Raven's eyes and trembled. But the main force of the fury wasn't him, but Mahou. That wasn't fair. It was Anoki's idea, Anoki's room, and Anoki's dragon. He had to take responsibility somehow.
"I-I'll f-finish eve-verything. I p-p-promise."
"And I will hold you to that," Raven replied coldly. Then she sighed, a long-suffering sigh of someone who was forced to put up with incompetence all around her. "What's done is done. Do not attempt something like this without my permission again."
As Raven pulled Mahou out of the room, barking dinner orders, Anoki stared at the empty doorframe in awe. He did it. He had stood up to Mama Ray, sort of. It was a very meager sort of stepping up to the plate, but he did it.
Turning away, he traced one of the sun's rays with his finger. Maybe he could manage a dragon after all. It couldn't possibly be scarier than Raven, even a fire-breathing one. And with a special spot to connect them, he was sure that they would become good friends.
That, however, was all the time Anoki had to spare for fantasies and daydreams. With a bit of pep in his step he picked up the paint cans, leaving them on one side of the room, and grabbed his textbook. He could do it. He could really do it!
[mum's the word]
Raven slept in often. If there was nothing to do in the morning, she felt that her time was better spent conserving her energy, and that if necessary she could work into the evening. Nighttime always did suit Raven better as far as magic was concerned, and habits had tuned the woman's tastes. It was almost to the point where she couldn't stand mornings at all.
So her displeasure at being woken early one Sunday in May was evident from the first flutter of her eyelids.
Perhaps it was the animal in Anoki that sensed the anger. Or it could be that he'd lived with her so long he could predict her moods. Either way, he backed up tentatively, rattling the tray he carried. It was difficult, and the bulk of its weight was centered on his right hand, the left only able to provide minor support.
The first thing Raven did was look out her window. Judging by the sun's position it couldn't have been after seven in the morning. "Anoki Kenelm," she asked sternly, eyes staying shut, "what is the meaning of this?"
Anoki looked at the tray, then at Raven, and stepped closer to her. "B-br-breakfast. I-"
"And why did you not leave the meal preparation to Mahou? Why did you feel it necessary to disturb me at such an early hour?"
"I-I just w-wanted-"
"Really, Anoki Kenelm." There was no going back to sleep now, and Raven sat upright, shedding cards and flowers on both sides. "You should know better than to interrupt me. Things are not always about what you want."
The boy's hands curled into fists, causing the tray to tip dangerously. Taking a deep breath, Anoki shouted for the first time in his life. "I j-just wanted t-t-to make you h-happy!"
"And you did it on your terms? That's a clumsy execution, Anoki Kenelm. I thought I taught you better. Now go and see if Mahou has work for you." Hopefully she would, so that Raven would have time to dress and get ready for the day. She couldn't be dealing with juvenile irrationality all the time.
"HAPPY M-MOTHER'S D-DAY!"
Tears welling up in his eyes, Anoki Kenelm dumped the tray on Raven's nightstand with far too much care for a normal angry kid, turned on his heel, and stomped out of the room. So much for making her happy. It had backfired on both of them!
Raven considered this behavior with some interest, then took in the new additions to her room. Anoki had made two cards, and picked a boquet of the daisies that grew outside the housing complex. Childish, but thoughtful in his own way. However what interested her most was the tray. It had breakfast basics on it, likely prepared and plated by Mahou, and another small bunch of dasies. The plates had slipped around while Anoki was juggling the tray, but for the most part the presentation was good. And he hadn't dropped the tray in his fit of anger.
Whatever she was doing to him, it was working. The clumsy kid was turning into a competent, if annoying, young man. Smirking, Raven took a bite of toast. She was good, to get such a reaction out of him. The child was in her grasp, and she would get good use out of him yet.
[naming names]
"Mama R-r-ray?"
Anoki climbed into a chair next to Raven, hoping to get her attention. He had something really important to ask.
Ignoring the child, Raven turned a page in her book. She didn't have time to listen to foolish babble.
"M-mama R-ray?"
Maybe if she ignored him enough he would go away.
"M-mama R-"
"What IS it, Anoki Kenelm?" Exasperated, Raven shut her book. "What do you need?"
Raven seemed to be in one of her not happy moods. Still, Anoki had to ask something important. "Wh-what's m-my dr-dr-dragon's name?"
Was that it? "Whatever you'd like it to be."
"B-but how d-do you kn-now?" Anoki had been thinking about it for a while. He couldn't call it "dragon" forever. Especially since he called his favorite plushie dragon. HIS dragon had to have a different name, a special name.
And Raven had to have time to herself. There was, however, a solution. Wordlessly she rose from her seat, crossed to a bookshelf on the other side of the room, and examined it before selecting a short, fat paperback. She nodded in approval, then handed it to Anoki.
"Read that."
Anoki frowned. "A... one-oh-oh-one-"
"What number is one-zero-zero-one?"
Math was not his best subject, and it took several seconds before Anoki dared a guess. "H-hundred-one?"
How could any child under her tutelage be such a failure? "A thousand and one, Anoki Kenelm. Count the digits. Three is a hundred, four is a thousand."
He knew that. Really. But he'd counted the zeros, which was what Raven had told him to do first. And there was a one and two zeros, which made a hundred, plus another one. Math didn't make any sense.
"A th-thousand one b... babby n-names?"
"Baby names," Raven corrected. At least he'd said names correctly. "That book contains a thousand and one different names, along with information about them. That should help you."
~-~
And help it did. Anoki didn't know that so many names even existed! Finally he'd found one that seemed absolutely perfect, and ran back to Raven.
Three hours had passed, and Raven was gone. "She's preparing for a class," Mahou informed Anoki. "But can I help you out?"
Nodding, Anoki held out the book, pointing to the last word on the page.
"Myung-Ki," Mahou read aloud. "Korean. Meaning 'to rise up shining." Why Anoki, that's lovely. Perfect for a fire dragon I would think."
The praise and approval made Anoki grin widely. He thought the name was perfect too. Hopefully the dragon would agree. It was a good name, after all, from the book Mama Ray had given him. So nothing could go wrong.
"M-myung-k-ki." The name sounded clumsy on Anoki's tongue, but he would try to make it sound as pretty as it did when Mahou read it. Then everyone would know how awesome his dragon was.
[cracking up]
Room-cleaning was tedious and tiring, and yet it was the one thing Anoki knew he'd be asked to do every day. It wasn't as if his room was horrifically messy either, but Raven always found some fault with it. Either his bed wasn't made with hospital corners, whatever those were, or he had more than four stuffed animals out. That day she noticed that his books weren't in alphabetical order, which meant Anoki was stuck rearranging them again.
Working with only one arm made it worse, so halfway through the alphabet he stopped and sat on his bed, breathing somewhat labored. He massaged his hands a little, then cast one over his nightstand, looking for the Easter marble. It was pretty ordinary, just a large sphere of stonelike material in a drab rockish color, but Anoki liked the cold feeling of it. When he was in the middle of working it was even better to rub his hands over.
But as he fingered it, Anoki could feel something wrong. His nail slipped into a long crevice on the side of the rock, that upon further inspection, turned out to be a crack. Frozen in horror, his only thoughts were of the punishment he would get. Quickly Anoki dropped the stone marble on his bed and ran out into the hallway.
"M-Mahou! Mama R-ray!" His voice didn't carry far, but his legs did. By the time Anoki reached the kitchen, however, he realized that the house was empty. Raven was teaching a class, and Mahou was shopping for new school clothes for the both of them. No one was there to help.
Shoulders slumped, Anoki returned to his room, to find the rock decorated with several fresh cracks. "Nooo..."
A soft "cheep" noise came from the sphere, followed by a rythmic tapping sound.
Before Anoki's eyes pieces of material flaked off the sphere, and it began to crumble. The ibex's eyes began to water, but he could still see enough to notice a brightly colored... something, in the middle of the shattered stone. But what it was, he couldn't quite tell.
The creature cheeped again, more loudly, and shook itself. It was slightly damp, and covered in pink and purple feathers, with birdlike front feet and catlike hind ones. As soon as it spotted Anoki it let out a whistle.
"What? I d-d-don't kn-know what t-to do..."
But the animal was so cute and small and Anoki did know that it probably wanted attention. So he tiptoed towards the bed. When the creature didn't move, he carefully took it in one arm, set it on his lap, and petted it.
"G-good b-boy."
