To Lady: Definately up to snuff! They look freaking amazing!
To Anges: I haven't seen the official version of Yeston/Kopit - but I did see a theater production of it last week.
I loved the story of the Yeston/Kopit version better. So much more emotion! I was crying at the end, it was beautiful! The music in both is fantastic! (Yeston/Kopits version reminded me of Beauty and the Beast - why is that?). But for some reason, with a few exceptions, I like the songs in Webber's better. Webber's version includes some of my favorite songs ever. But I love the way You are Music flowed, and I had so much fun with the Paris song! Wonderful. My feelings about Yeston/Kopins version might have been the acoustics in the theater though. It was really hard to hear the singers (especially the guy who played Eric/Phantom) over the orchestra.
I've never seen the Kopit/Yeston musical, actually. But, I have listened to the CD. (Amazon and E-bay are amazing.) Both musicals have fantastic music, though. And "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" will always have a very special place in my heart.
The poor acoustics were probably detrimental to the performance, though. Erik's voice has to be strong so the emotions in the songs can
really come out in the way he sings. If the power and passion isn't there, the music loses a lot of its beauty.
As for Carlotta... Heh... I don't
hate her. It's hard, because in reality Christine and Carlotta have entirely different kinds of voices. *shrugs* If
I were managing the theatre, I wouldn't have even
considered casting them for the same roles, so there would have been no conflict between them. Carlotta is either a dramatic soprano or a mezzo with an extension. Christine is probably a lyric soprano with a coloratura top.
