_____________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .::>Bedtime Story<::.
"Cato! It's bedtime!" Salem called out to his little mishap from across the room, setting down the papers he had been going through. He had had to take back a few of the children that had been adopted and that required a bit of paper work. He hoped that they would all get homes again soon.
Cato blinked and looked up from his toys. He frowned, shaking his head. "No!" He got up and slowly started to back away.
"Come on Cato... Let's get you something to eat, okay? Then I'll read you a story." He came forward now, hopping he could catch the child before he broke into a run.
The spider mishap considered this and stayed in his place, looking up at his adoptive father with his four double eyes. He picked up Blank's egg as he watched his father grow closer.
"That's a good, Cato..." Salem leaned down and gently picked up the toddler, kissing his cheek before going into the bathroom. He sat the child in the tub, stripping Cato out of his clothes. "Alright, now just wait here. I'll bring you your food."
Cato nodded and rolled the egg around the tub, giggling as he watched it go this way and that.
The young catfolk left the bathroom and quickly fetched a small box with a large white rat in it. He came back to the bathroom, the rat scuttling around in the box as they went. Sitting down on the toilet he cupped his hands under the rat and removed it from the box. "Alright, now, hold it's head like I told you to so it won't bite you."
Cato nodded as he gently took hold of the rat before grabbing onto the small creature's head. He gripped it tightly despite it's struggling and turned it over. Without further warning he bit into the rat's belly, ripping a good chunck from there. After a loud squeal from the rat there was little reaction from it as it quickly died. Cato on the other hand was quite content chewing what he'd taken from the rat's belly till it was almost liquid, splattered and dripping with blood. One who got queasy definatly could never watch Cato eat.
Salem on the other hand had handled babies like this so he was unphased, even finding the happy face Cato made when he was fed like this cute, despite all the blood.
Cato continued his messy form of eating until he was full. Dropping the remains of the rat in the trash next to the tub as he was tought.
Salem smiled at this. "That's good Cato. You remember to throw the rest away in the trash. Now let's give you a bath and then we can read our story. He turned on the water and warmed it before starting to give the little mishap a bath. "You've been a good boy today, Cato. Do you want bubbles?" He smiled sweetly at his son, slicking the now less bloody child's hair back.
"Bubbles!" He wiggled happily, cuddling his egg and nuzzling the hand that ran through his hair. "Bubbles!"
Salem laughed softly and nodded, plugging up the water and putting some bubble bath into the water. The fluffy bubbles started to build up as the water level rose.
Cato laughed and happily splashed, making more bubbles and getting Salem wet.
The catfolk laughed as he kneeled next to his son, washing him clean gently with warm water and soap. He smiled as he watched the toddler relax and allow himself to be washed. He was just lucky that Cato liked his baths. His smile widened as he watched the child wash the egg he'd been given in turn.
Cato happily cleaned the egg and made it all nice and shiny! Blank was pretty when he was shiny! He pouted as he saw his daddy pull the plug and the water started to drain. "Awww..." He wiggled in complaint as he was rinsed a final time and picked up out of the water in a towel, still holding his egg.
Salem gently craddled the small child to him within that warm fluffy towel. Taking him all the way to his room he rubbed him dry and gently put him down inside his crib. Leaving for only a moment he came back with a set of PJs and helped Cato into them. "There... All ready for story time. What story do you want Cato?"
Cato cuddled into his pillow, Blank's egg by his side so his daddy could tuck him in. Once he was under the blanket he cuddled into that too. "Uuuuum... Daddy? Where did stories come from...?" The spider mishap cocked his head to the side curiously.
"Where do stories come from?" The catfolk laughed softly, already starting to search his memories for something. "Hmmm... How about I tell you a story about that? There's evern a spiders in it!"
The toddler smiled happily, nodding and cuddling his egg once again, suckling on his ever present chain while he listened.
"Alright... Let's see... It was long ago in Africa, when there was the first spider, Kwaku Anansi. He went everywhere, throughout the world, travelling on his strong web strings - sometimes looking more like a wise old man than a spider.
In that long-ago time, there were no stories on Earth for anyone to tell. The sky-god kept all stories to himself, up high in the sky, and locked away in a wooden box.
These the spider wanted, as many creatures had before him, so that he could know the beginnings and endings of things. Yet all who had tried for the stories had returned empty-handed.
Now Anansi climbed up his web to the sky-god, Nyame, to ask for the sky-god's stories.
When the powerful sky-god saw the thin, spidery, old man crawling up to his throne, he laughed at him, "What makes you think that you, of all creatures, can pay the price I ask for my stories?"
Anansi wanted to know, "What is the price of the stories?"
"My stories have a great price, four fearsome, elusive creatures: Onini, the python that swallows men whole; Osebo, the leopard with teeth like spears; Mmoboro, the hornets that swarm and sting; and Mmoatia, the fairy who is never seen. Bring these to me."
Bowing, the spider quietly turned and crept back down through the clouds. He ment to capture the four creatures he needed as price for the stories. He first asked his wife, Aso, how he might capture Onini, the python that swallows men whole.
She told him a plan, saying, "Go and cut off a branch of the palm tree and cut some string-creeper as well. Take these to the stream where python lives."
As Anansi went to the swampy stream, carrying these things, he began arguing aloud, "This is longer than he; You lie, no; it Is true; this branch is longer and he is shorter, much shorter."
The python was listening, and asked what spider was talking about, "What are you muttering, Anansi?"
"I tell you that my wife, Aso, is a liar, for she says that you are longer than this palm branch and I say that you are not."
Onini, the python, said, "Come and place the branch next to me and we will see if she is a liar."
And so, Anansi put the palm branch next to the python's body, and saw the large snake stretch himself alongside it. Ananasi then bound the python to the branch with the string-creeper and wound it over and over until he came to the head. Then the spiderman said to Onini, "Fool, I will now take you to the sky-god."
This Anansi did as he spun a web around the snake to carry him back through the clouds to the sky kingdom.
On seeing the gigantic snake, Nyame merely said, "There remains what still remains."
Spider came back to Earth to find the next creature, Osebo the leopard, with teeth like spears.
His wife, Aso, told him, "Go dig a large hole."
Anansi said, "I understand, say no more."
After following the tracks of the leopard, spider dug a very deep pit. He covered it over with the branches of the trees and came home. Returning in the very early morning, he found a large leopard lying in the pit.
"Leopard, is this how you act? You should not be prowling around at night; look at where you are! Now put your paw here, and here, and I will help you out."
The leopard put his paws up on the sticks that Anansi placed over the pit and began to climb up. Quickly, Anansi hit him over the head with a wooden knife! The leopard fell back into the pit. Anansi quickly spun the leopard to the sticks with his web string.
"Fool, I am taking you to pay for the sky-god's stories."
But the sky-god recieved the leopard saying, "What remains, still remains."
Next the spiderman went looking for Mmoboro, the hornets that swarm and sting.
Spider told his wife, Aso, what he was looking for and she said, "Look for an empty gourd and fill it with water."
This spider did and he went walking through the bush until he saw a swarm of hornets hanging there in a tree. He poured out some of the water and sprinkled it all over their nest. Cutting a leaf from a nearby banana tree, he held it up and covered his head. He then poured the rest of the water from the gourd all over himself. Then while he was dripping he called out to the hornets, "The rain has come, do you see me standing here with a leaf to cover my head? Fly inside my empty gourd so that the rain will not beat at your wings."
The hornets flew into the gourd, saying, "Thank you, thank you, Anansi!" Anansi stopped up the mouth of the gourd, and spinning a thick web around it, said, "Fools, I'm taking you to the sky-god as price for his stories."
The sky-god, Nyame, accepted Mmoboro, the hornets that swarm and sting, and said, "What remains, still remains."
Anansi knew very well what remained - it was the fairy, Mmoatia, who is never seen. When the spider came back to Earth, he asked Aso what to do. And so, he carved an Akua's child, a wooden doll with a black, flat face, and covered it with sticky fluid from a tree.
Walking through the bush, he found the odum tree, where the fairies like to play. He then made eto, pounded yams, and put some in the doll's hand and even more of the yams into a brass basin at her feet - there by the odum tree. Anansi next hid in the bushes, with a vine creeper in his hands that was also tied to the doll's neck.
It wasn't long before the fairies came, two sisters, to play. They saw the doll with the eto and asked if they could have some. Anansi made the doll's head nod, "Yes", by pulling on the string-creeper. Soon the faries had eaten all the eto and so, thanked the doll, but the doll did not reply. The fairies became angry.
One sister said, "When I thank her, she says nothing."
The other sister replied, "Then slap her in her crying place."
This the fairy did, she slapped it's cheek but her hand stuck there. She slapped it with her other hand and that hand stuck, too. She kicked it with both one foot, then the other, and both feet stuck to the sticky wooden doll. Finally, she pushed her stomache to it and that stuck.
Then Anansi came from his hiding place, and said, "Fool, I have got you, and now I will take you to the sky-god to buy his stories once and for all." Anansi spun a web around the last of the four creatures and brought Mmoatia up to Nyame in the sky kingdom. The sky-god, seeing this last catch, called together all his nobles. He put it before them and told them that the spider-man had done what no-one else had been able to do. He said in a loud voice that rang in the sky, "From now and forever, my sky-god stories belong to you my blessing, my blessing, my blessing. We will now call these 'Spider Stories'."
And so, stories came to Earth because of the great cunning of Kwaku Anansi, and his wife, Aso. When Anansi brought the wooden box of stories to his home, he and his wife eagerly learned each one of them. And you can still see today that Aku and Aso tell their stories. Everywhere you look, they spin their webs for all to see. The End" Salem concluded softly, smiling down at his little mishap.
By this time Cato was have asleep, but very content. He had liked the story very much! So that's where stories came from. Wow... Spiders were great! He was so happy to be one himself.
"Sweet dreams, Cato. Night, Blank..." The catfolk reached down to pat the egg before leaning in to kiss his adoptive son's forhead.
Cato mummbled softly in return, but quickly drifted off into dream land.
Salem smiled softly and just watched his little one for a moment. He had quickly grown to love the little pain in the butt. He greatly looked forward to watching him grow up, wondering how he'd turn out. Reluctantly he stood himself up and left the room, turning off the light so that only the nightlight lit the room. Heading off to finish off a few things before getting ready for bed himself.

[Shopping]
Salem smiled as he lead his toddler by the hand through the HQ. "Now, Cato. You can choose one toy. Okay? Any one you want." He explained to the toddler as they reached the store.
The spiderling nodded, smiling brightly at the thought of getting his own toy! Daddy wasn't going to get him something, he was going to choose it! He's never gotten to do something like that before! He was so happy! "This's gunbee grea'! Righ' Blank?" He smiled down at the patch-worked doll.
The doll nodded, looking around the shop as they entered, wondering what Cato would choose as his new toy.
As soon as his hand was released he was off! The spiderling smiled at all the toys, picking up and looking at each one carefully. Which one to choose...
"What about that one over there?" The patch-worked doll already in Cato's arms asked, pointing at a blue puppy.
"Nuh..." Replied the toddler as he looked at the floppy eared dog, shaking his head.
"How about a bunny, Cato?" The cat-man held up a pale yellow bunny for his toddler only to get a tongue stuck out at him.
"Nuh! I wanna choose Daddy!!" Came the reply when he'd drawn his tongue back into his mouth. "Oooo..." He cooed, scampering over to the fish tanks. "I want that one!" He pointed out the prettiest fish he could find, smiling at it's green color.
"Yeah... He'd look awesome in your room Cato!" Piped in the red-headed doll.
"Don't incourage him Blank! Cato, kiddo... I said you could have a toy. Not a pet. I promise if you're really good I'll get you a pet someday, but not till I think you can take care of one. Come on... Back to the toys..." Reluctantly he gently pushed his toddler back to where he should be, knowing the kid wasn't going to be happy about it.
"Bu' I wan' it!" Cried the little one as he was lead away, looking over his shoulder at the pretty fish.
"No, Cato.... You can't have an Emeraldback Lion... You wouldn't be able to take care of it well! Come on kiddo... Just choose a toy... Please, Cato...?" He spoke gently, praying that the child would calm himself.
"No! I wan' it!" He snapped back, grabbing the leg of he nearest plushie and chucking it at his adoptive father, hitting him square in the face.
Not having expected that he got smacked in the face with the plushie, catching it before it hit the ground. Grumbling softly he rubbing the small pain in his nose away with a finger, blinking as he saw Cato with a look of total awe on his face. Wha...?
"I wan' tha' one!!" Cried the toddler as he snatched back the purple and red spider he had thrown at his father. "Dis one, dis one, dis one!!!" He hopped up and down, cuddling the plushie in his second set of arms, near Blank.
"Yeah!! That one would be perfect!" Agreed the theif doll, nodding as he pat the plushie with a nubby hand.
The catfolk blinked before smiling. Well... That was one way of choosing a toy. "That's the one you want? Alright. Come on, let's go pay." Thank the Gods! The kid had settled on a toy! A good one at that, he thought. Paying the Gold for the toy he lead the way home, gently gripping the toddler's third left hand as the other two were taken up. "So... What you going to call your new toy?" He asked gently, looking down at the spider plush. "He has a squiggle on his back. How about Squiggle?" He asked, offering a name a child might think of.
"Nuh! I'mma call 'im... Coria Liante!" He declared in perfect Elven!
Salem's eyes widened as his hand stopped on the door knob of their appartment. Wait... Had he just...? "Wh... What are you going to call him..?" He stared down at the toddler in shock.
"Coria Liante!" He repeated, his pronounciation as perfect as it had been the first time.
His gaze now fell down to the animated doll in Cato's main arms. "Did... You...?" He asked uncertainly.
The doll shrugged it's little shoulders. "Got me. I don't know what the Hell he just said or where he got it from and he takes me everywhere, you know that."
Salem looked back to his toddler for a moment before sighing and opening the door, letting them inside. Catherine had warned him that odd things like this happened with Mishaps. He shouldn't have been surprised...

[Fathers Day] Cato smiled as he looked out at the beach, Blank sitting on his head at the moment. He was dressed in nothing but sandles and a pair of black swim trunks that had an acid green streak down the sides. He hadn't gotten very many chances to come out here sense his father was usually so busy and was looking forward to everything planned today. The thing was... He didn't understand the big deal about this... Fader's Day... "Daddy... I don't get it..." He murmured, still looking out at the ocean."It's a day for Dads Cato." Came the simple explination from the toy sitting upon the spider Mishaps head. The cat-man laughed softly as he put down all their beach things, spreading out the two towels and popping up the large umbrella as he spoke. "Father's Day is a day were Daddies everywhere celebrate being a Daddy. I'm your Daddy Cato, so I get to celebrate being your Daddy." He smiled slightly at the confused look on the small child's face. "It's kinda like a birthday, I guess you could say. You try to make Daddy happy and give him gifts for being a good Daddy! Understand...?" Salem himself was dressed in as much as his son, though the streak he had was neon blue. The toddler didn't quite grasp it yet, but decided he would agree anyway so that he could get to the fun part quicker. "Uh-huh." He said, nodding slightly.Salem smiled, knowing it hadn't sunken in, but he was so young that he didn't expect it to either. "Come here, Cato, so we can get you ready to go in the water!"Sure enough that got the little Mishap running over, the rag doll upon his head threatening to fall off. The spiderling spread all his arms wide and held still for his adoptive father.Pulling out the suntan lotion he started to smear a healthy amount of it all over the dark skin of his little one, making sure not only to get all of him, but also dip a little under his swim trunks, just in case. This done he slipped on a pair of matching green floaties up to the bicep of each of Cato's main arms. Lastly he gently strapped on a pair of goggles he had to have specially made to cover all four of his eyes. "Alright, you're ready to go! I'll catch up. Don't go too far!" Cato smiled happily and scampered off and right into the water, giggling all the way.Blank tumbled right off his head at this point, the sudden movement and then sudden stop too much for his little body to control. He plunked into the water, whip-like antena flailing as he did. By the time he came back up he was heavily water logged and laughing. Lucky for him, the magic that granted him life also kept his stuffing from moving around so he held his shape.Salem smiled as he watched the two in the water, putting lotion on himself now. He watched his toddler splash about harmlessly, amused at how the rag doll was going it's best to splash back with it's entire body as he finished, putting the bottle down. Striding over to the water he brought along Cato's favorite green and yellow stripped ball, sitting himself down in the surf. "Come on Cato! Let's play!" He called.Cato stopped splashing on the spot, dragging Blank along heavily with one of his back arms, keeping a hold of that little nub to he wouldn't float away. "Yaay!" Was all he said, standing in the shallow water and waiting for his father to make the first throw.Salem gently pushed the ball through the water so it floated over to the toddler, the small waves slowing it down some.Cato on the other hand gave the ball a sharp shove, splashing his father as the ball jerked back in the other direction.Salem laughs as the game went on, a soft smile coming to his lips as the ball lightly bumped into Cato who hadn't been paying attention. Seems the child had gotten bored after five minutes of playing ball. Shouldn't have surprised him. Pulling the ball back over he tossed it back onto the shore near their things before standing. "Why don't we practice swimming?" He asked lightly as if it was the more fun thing in the world.Cato took the bait and smiled brightly, nodding. "Okay!" He came over to his father and smiled as those large hands gently took hold of his own smaller ones. "We're going to try floating today. Now, you're going to lay on your back and keep straight or you'll sink. Don't worry, I'll be here so I won't let you go under, but you need to do it on your own, okay?"The toddler nodded and allowed himself to be gently pulled onto his back, his father's other hand supporting the small of his back. He kept his mouth closed tight so water wouldn't get in and spread his arms out aross the water, his main arms straight out to his sides, the second pair angled a little more down, and his back arms streaching out near each side of his head. His butt started to sink however.Salem, lifted him up again, smiling. Raising his voice to the toddler could hear under the water. "Keep your back straight Cato!"The toddler straightened up again and sure enough, started to float as his father pulled his hands away. The thing is he assumed his father still had it near and when he saw all ten fingers wiggling at him he paniced and flailed, sinking once again and sputtering."Oop!" Salem, grasped the little one so his head was out of the water, frowning a little as his toddler coughed. He seemed to be alright though... Just startled. "You alright Cato...? Maybe we should stop for today... You did really good!"The happy tone did nothing to cheer him and between his coughing he started to cry, whining loudly. Water had gotten into his eyes and it stung badly.Bitting his lower lip he gently picked up his little one and started off toward the beach. Gently rubbing the spiderlings back he settled himself down on the towel and started drying off the little one's eyes with a fresh towel from his bag. "Shhhh..... It's okay Cato... You're alright. It's just salt water. You'll be okay..."Cato whined softly as his eyes were toweled, cuddling to his father's chest once it had stopped. That had been scary! Still... His father did seem to be right in the fact his eyes didn't hurt anymore. Still... He didn't know if he wanted to try that again. Pulling the soaked rag doll into his own lap he hugged it tightly, squeezing much of the water out of it."It's alright, kiddo. You can try again another time. Swimming can be a lot of fun, but you have to learn how first!" Explained the little doll, reaching up to ruffle Cato's wet hair with his equally wet nub.The toddler smiled at this, nuzzling his doll and feeling better."Hey Cato, you hungry?" The cat-man asked, in hopes of changing the subject. The toddler nodded, a smile pulling at the corners of his lips. He wondered what his Daddy had brought him along.Salem pulled out a couple of sandwiches from himself and a zip lock bag with some raw and very bloody meat. Opening up the bag he handed it to Cato which promptly pouted at it.Cato whined softly, looking at the bag, "But Daddyyyy!"Salem chuckled softly and shook his head. "I know Cato... But I couldn't bring anything like that for you. I'll give you something better once we get home, but for now, this is all I have for you." And that said he started to eat his own lunch.Cato pouted down at his meal for a moment before reaching inside and starting to eat, making a bloody mess of himself as always.Blank quickly scrambled to sit on the towel, staring up at Cato from there. "Ew..." He was never going to get used to that...Soon everyone was done with lunch and Salem stood, starting to walk back to the water. "We need to clean you up a bit Cato, then we can make a sand castle!""San'... Ca-sell...?" The Mishap asked, cocking his head. Standing he came over to his father, standing waist deep in the water.Blank floated after him, using his whip-like antenna to fly. "Um... It's those big stone houses that kings and queens live in Cato. Like in the story books!""Oooo..." The spider toddler cooed remembering some of the stories he had been read at bed time about these 'ca-sells'.The catfolk kneeled down and gently washed what blood was still left on the toddler before leading the way back to the shore, just out of the reach of the waves, but close enough for wet sand. Here he sat himself and patted the sand next to him.The spider Misahp followed, sitting himself down next to his Daddy, looking at him curious. The patch worked doll sat itself on the toddler's head once again, making itself comfortable.Salem started to dig up some sand, piling and packing the sand into a tower. "First you start with what's in the middle. I like putting a big tower here."Cato nodded slightly as he watched. The castle slowly took shape and eventually even he was working on it. His bits kept coming out a little crooked however and his Daddy would fix them up a bit when that happened. Eventually the castle was done. It even had a little mout they had filled with water! Upon his father perclaiming it done he raised all of his arms happily cheering. He had just made his first sand castle!!"You didn't great Cato! Look how pretty it is!" He smiled down at the castle they had made. It was even decorated by little shells."Yeah, it looks great!" Chirped the doll upon Cato's head.Cato smiled happily at the castle before suddenly giving a great yawn. He blinked his now droopy double eye a few times as he smiled at his father now. Salem too this as his que and stood, picking up his toddler. Going over to the water he washed all the sand off the two of them before going back to the towels, sitting Cato on one. Packing everything up he then picked up the child and the towel, kissing his cheek. "Let's go home and have a nice hot bath. Then I can tell you a bedtime story, okay?"The child nodded sleepily, cuddling his adoptive father and hugging Blank close. Salem put all the beach things away and dumped the towels down a loundry chout. Be made his way up to his room after picking up a bottle of blood flavored milk and warming it up for his toddler to have in bed. Upon entering his tower he blinked to find many things left on his bed. "Wha...?" Then he realized what it all was. He smiled, but first gave Cato his bath and put him to bed, suckling his bottle. There was no story needed as the toddler drifted off to sleep very quickly.
That taken care of he took a bath himself and came back then to look at all his pressents. It brought tears to his eyes as he read the card while eating his father's day cookie. Gently standing the card up on his nightstand he put all his other presents in a nice place before curling up under his own warm covers, smiling to himself as he drifted off to sleep.[End]

From under the door slid a crisp, sealed envelope. Upon its face there was scrawled "To Salem and Cato" in spidery, indigo script.
Quote: Dear Salem and Cato, As we have all figured out from when Cato was a baby, he has a tendency to be...sticky. First it was his hands and feet, though now it seems that something else is becoming quite adhesive-like; his saliva. Being the mix that he is, I'm sure you can easily figure out why this is happening, but what about figuring out how to control/use it? As his guardian, that is up to you to help figure out. Good luck! -The Magical Mishap Staff
