Memo Delivery II: Canaan vs Kenth vs Alexis

It had been after a long day of classes that Canaan'd returned to his dormroom, only to find a note telling him to report to Doctor Kenth's office. The teen had barely stopped long enough to dump his notebook and tablet on his bed before jogging to the hospital wing. He'd been spending hours each day studying, learning to read quickly, learning to spell. In fact, he only had one lesson to go before he was eligible for promotion. Cane was succeeding here. Soon, he would be able to write to his grandmother, and that made him proud. He'd never written a letter in his life.

His discussion with Kenth, taking place at dusk, was brief, and to the point. In fact, the man said little more than "I trust you can deliver another memo?" and sent Cane on his way. Still, it was interesting. Canaan had been given time to ponder the relationship between the two, and in his eyes, Kenth had a bit to learn. Alexis Falcone seemed like an amazing woman. Why the note games, then?

Still, it wasn't his duty to debate the motives of the school's staff, it was his duty to deliver a memo.

Intro

"Ah! Master Cane, just the student I was looking for..."
The older demon beckoned him into his office where, with a quick scratch of his name, Quentin placed a letter into Cane's hand for safe keeping. "If you would skip this over to Professor Burdock, I was be very appreciative. See that he ehm... fills it out and have it returned to me as fast as you can..."

One could say that Cane was turning into a delivery boy, but that would be to assume that he hadn't been a delivery boy in the first place. Back on the Res, he was always running errands, making trades, and doing chores, and doing the same at school was nothing new to him. Of course, the fact that two magic professors, out of all the staff, were using him as a courier was of interest. Still, he was a basic student, so one could assume he was up for grabs to anyone.

Canaan certainly didn't mind, it gave him an excuse to move freely about the school, examining teacher's areas and learning things about them face-to-face. Now he was enroute to the other end of the magic building, where Professor Burdock's office was.

Still, Professor Bandersnatch had greeted him oddly. Had seemed to know that the teen would walk by when he did, on his way from Micajah's room. Was he just observant, did he really know, or was that how he always spoke? Only more interactions would tell him.

The tan native grinned as he remembered the Head of Magic's directions. A strange, strange man, well, no, demon. Canaan didn't dislike him, though. In fact, the curly-haired male was already interesting. Cane'd been meeting a lot of teacher's lately, and that was a good thing. Considering his heritage, he was still very into magic and tradtion, despite his desire to enter the school of technology.

Now, though, he knocked on the wooden door of the redhead's office. No answer. Another knock, and still no answer, and Cane noticed that the door was slightly ajar. Pushing it open gently, the stocky native entered, looking about. "Professor Burdock?"

It wasn't until he was fully inside that he saw the huge demon, collapsed on his back on the floor. Sleeping, passed out... Dead? Frowning, Cane approached slowly, cautiously, and spoke loudly as he bent down. "PROFESSOR BURDOCK!" Instantly, it seemed, a large hand was around his neck, but before he even felt the slightest of pain, the hand was removed.

"... Ach.... I'm sorry, boy. You shouldn't startle a demon." The tall redhead's hair was touseled, he had a bit of stubble on his jaw, and he looked groggy. Using Cane's shoulder to help himself up, he grinned. "You're sturdier than most about here. I'm Gideon Burdock, and you are...?"

"Canaan Kreery." A nod was exchanged between the two and before Cane could ask about Gideon's prior condition, the demon shrugged, explaining. "Sorry about that, I was up all night reading some texts I just got in, and my cot," He gestured to a giant stack of books and papers, "Is out of commission until I clean this damned office."

Running his hands through his flaming hair, the demon cast Canaan a grin. "Now, what can I do for you, Canaan?" The native simply held out the letter.

"From Professor Bandersnatch." The redhead's brows jumped, then he laughed. "That ol' dog." Taking the letter, he opened it quickly, heading over to his also cluttered desk, brows still raised. "He said that you should fill it out, then I'll return it."

Nodding his head, the demon grabbed an ink pen and jotted down a few scribbles, handing back to Cane promptly. "Brilliant, brilliant," was the absent-minded mumble and he turned to regard his mess. "Thank you, boy... Have a great day, will ya?"

"And you as well." Two odd men in one day, it seemed. Cane briefly glanced at the writing on the now unfolded letter, but Gideon's comments were illegible to the uninitiated and unconcerned. Heading back to the other end of the building and up a flight of stairs, he found Quentin missing from his office and instead dropped the letter in the demon's mailbox.

Another day another delivery.

Cherokee Myth: The Legend of the Bear Clan

In the long ago time, there was a Cherokee Clan called the Ani-Tsa-gu-hi and in one family of this clan was a boy who used to leave home and be gone all day in the mountains.

After awhile he went more often and stayed longer, until at last he would not eat in the house at all, starting off at daybreak and not coming back until night.

His parents scolded, but that did no good, and the boy still went every day until they noticed that long brown hair was beginning to grow out all over his body. Then they wondered and asked him why it was that he wanted to be in the woods so much that he would not even eat at home.

Said the boy, "I find plenty to eat there, and it is better than the corn and beans we have in the settlements, and pretty soon I am going into the woods to stay all the time."

His parents were worried and begged him not leave them, but he said, "It is better there than here, and you see I am beginning to be different already, so that I can not live here any longer. If you will come with me, there is plenty for all of us and you will never have to work for it; but if you want to come, you must first fast seven days."

The father and mother talked it over and then told the headmen of the clan. They held a council about the matter and after everything had been said they decided: "Here we must work hard and have not always enough. There he says is always plenty without work. We will go with him."

So they fasted seven days, and on the seventh morning al the Ani-Tsa-gu-hi left the settlement and started for the mountains as the boy led the way.

When the people of the other towns heard of it they were very sorry and sent their headmen to persuade the Ani-Tsa-gu-hi to stay at home and not go into the woods to live. The messengers found them already on the way, and were surprised to notice that their bodies were beginning to be covered with hair like that of animals, because for seven days they had not taken human food and their nature was changing.

The Ani-Tsa-gu-hi would not come back, but said, "We are going where there is always plenty to eat. From now on, we shall be called Yonva, and when you yourselves are hungry come into the woods and call us and we shall come to give you our own flesh. You need not be afraid to kill us, for we shall live always."

Then they taught the messengers the songs with which to call them and bear hunters have these songs still. When they had finished the songs, the Ani-Tsa-gu-hi started on again and the messengers turned back to the settlements, but after going a little way they looked back and saw a drove of bears going into the woods.

It has only been two months, but you have already met the prerequisites for the School for Science and Technology. However, with all this hard work studying, have you had enough time to be social? Saving the world isn’t something you can do on your own.

Prompt
In no less than 800 words, please describe your relations with other students you have met since you have arrived at ShinKami. (This may be in the form of a solo or a journal entry.) How do you feel about your current social situation? How do you feel about more acquaintances?

Canaaan would be promoted soon. He'd known that for a week, but now it was upon him, the time to pack and switch dorm rooms had arrived. The tan, muscled native was taking much longer than usual to complete his task. Most of the time, he was quick, accurate, and strong and he finished things in a matter of hours that took other boys his age days. Laziness on their part, really, distractibility. Now though, Cane looked across the room at Bronte's empty bed, his vision partially blurred from a glance through his now long, loose hair.

It would be interesting to stay alone. Canaan had never had a room to himself before in his entire life. Bronte had been a good roommate. The two had been respectful of each other's differences and boundaries, curious about each other's cultures. They'd shared food and thoughts and music. They'd shared a home, if only for two months. Two months was a long time if you'd been taken away from home.

Being at Shinkami School of Saviors was hard for Cane, but it wasn't without its rewards. He missed his home, the weather that changed hourly, the rain, the fog, the sun, the water, the redwoods, the farms and gardens. He missed the close-knit community, the laughter and love, the tradition and bonding. He missed his grandmother and the way things were done and understood back home. He missed not needing words, for those around him, whether they be people, animal, or nature, knew him without language. He missed his native tongue, the mix of Cherokee, Hoopa, and English they spoke on the reservation. He missed the heat, and wearing nothing but jeans. He missed the auto shop and the native men. He missed the women, the children.

Some didn't know whether to think of Cane as a social creature or not, and in truth, he was. However, it was a different form of socialization than he found here. He wanted to laugh, sit, drink, eat, play, fight, and walk with the others. To feel the warmth of their company, emotionally and physically, rather than verbally. But here, things were different. Despite the purpose of the school, the others did not seem to be as one. One fighting, learning, creating, protecting unit. That is what they needed to be. Scyeth, the self appointed 'General' of the students was failing there. He was too lost in himself to see what the others needed to pull them together. Science and Technology or Magic did not matter, culture did not matter, race did not matter. Earth mattered, more than any of the boys' differences, and that was one of the only reasons Cane was here, rather than back at home with Grandmother Cherokee.

Canaan frowned as he looked at the bracers on his arms, thinking of said students. He had found and learned much here. Micajah. Kumama, his little butterfly. He felt a love developing in his now physically romantic relationship with the other boy. For Cane, it was a familiar feeling. He had loved many back home, but this was different, in a way. He sensed a kindred soul in the boy, as if he was one of his own people. The blonde, too, was lost within himself, but he seemed to know it. As long as he could, the native would keep their relationship going. It felt important inside of him, and he never let such things go.

Scyeth... Fiery, passionate, clever... Lost. It was a school full of lost boys. Scy was too busy trying to be loved, liked, to realize that he already was. Canaan thought of their companionship as they played lacrosse together, as they physically competed. To Cane, it wasn't a superiority battle, instead it was as close to his relationship with the other boys of his tribe as he'd gotten so far. The demon was a good person, he just had not come into himself as of yet. The native would help him.

Wynn. Cane smiled. It would be sad to leave the dorms, and that small boy alone. In some ways, they were very alike, the two. Their love of nature, their understanding of the world, their love of observation, and their careful choice of words. Still, they were different. Canaan was a protector, and he would watch over the Inuk.

The last person that he had begun to become close to was Alexis Falcone. The current, unwilling Offensive Secretary. The woman was beautiful, honest, bold. So much like himself. Still, she too was lost. Perhaps that was what really drew people to the island?

It was strange to think that Canaan himself might be the most grounded person enrolled in the school. Still, he would make it his duty to meet everyone, to bring them together. Cane, more than anyone, knew how important it was to do this together, to be united and strong. When they finally joined battle, the boys needed to be willing to throw down their lives for the boy beside them, and trust that said boy would do the same.

Canaan was already on his way to becoming a Guardian, in more than just title.

Cane finds himself stuck between two warring boys, Scy and Wei, unclear on their ties to one another through RuiZhi. Though, perhaps if Cane knew Wei's ties to his own boyfriend, he might not have been so helpful.

Ecology: Canaan vs Nathaniel

Unlike his friend, Scyeth, Canaan is unperturbed by Nathaniel's differences, instead taking them in stride and [unexpectedly] earning the Brit's admiration.

Canaan now knows he finds the chemical laboratory tedious and boring. Hopefully, he won't have to do any actual work in there!
