The Pink Swamp

In the end, a professional painter had cost too much to hire, and Jasper had declared that he and Yeesha would paint her room themselves. The alligator girl had seemed quite excited about the whole process, and had spent several days picking out her favourite design. First she wanted the swamp trees, then the ocean, then the pink stars of doom, and ultimately, she decided she wanted a swamp with pretty water and a pink sky. Jasper wasn't sure how good it would look in the end but he would do the best that he could. So long as Yeesha enjoyed the room (and could actually sleep in it) Jasper didn't mind what colour it was. All those colours matched her yellow bed sheets anyways.

Yeesha's eyes had practically glowed when Jasper allowed her to help him prepare the paint and then handed her a brush of her own. She wasn’t a particularly accurate painter, but that wouldn’t be important here. It was only the base coat. All she had to do was go up and down the wall. He had a feeling there would probably be some splatters here and there, but it wasn’t like he had to look at the walls of the room every night. If it turned out too badly he could just put in lots of trees and hide the sky behind them. That, or put in lots of water. It would all work out in the end. What was important was making her feel more at home here, seeing as it was going to be her permanent residence. Jasper tried to avoid thinking about such things, especially around her. It was better that she didn’t know, and could focus on painting her new room instead. She had lots of time to grow up.

The first coat was the pink background. Jasper did his best to make it look like a sunset rather than just a bubblegum pink sky, but he wasn't sure how well he'd done. Somewhere along the line Yeesha had started getting paint on him, and he had ended up with a pink splotch on his jeans and a pink hand. He could only thank the gods for stain remover. The paint had had to dry for the night – Yeesha got to sleep on Jasper's bed and Jasper got the couch – before they were ready to paint the scenery. Yeesha's swamp water ended up being splashes of blue with strange smudges wherever she leaned in her paint and then moved. It looked like water though, and because of that Jasper felt quite smug. Next came the swamp landscape, which Yeesha enjoyed immensely. The trees were nothing special, Jasper was hardly an artist, but in the end Yeesha seemed to like it very much. She also seemed to like bossing him around while they were painting, pointing out all of the flaws in his trees. After a final night of drying, Jasper added some final details and then it was finished.

Yeesha bounced on her bed as Jasper began returning her possessions to the room. She had helped him with the nightstand her lamp, but after that settled for simply pointing to where the rest of her things should go. The room was a little smaller than the one she had had at her daddy’s house, but then again she had had more things when she was there. She had only taken with her some toys and her small green desk with the green smudge on it. Everything else she had had to leave behind. But the desk fit well in her room, and it was set down in the middle of the rightmost wall. Her bed already occupied the far left-hand corner of the room, her little pink nightstand beside it. The toy box that Jasper brought in next went at the foot of her bed, and finally her blankie was placed on the end of her comforter. With everything in place, Yeesha hopped off of her bed and made her way to her desk. When her trinkets from her classes were set neatly on its surface, she trotted to the doorway so she could survey her room. Jasper leaned casually on the door frame behind her, gauging her reaction.

"So, what do you think squirt?"

The alligator girl grinned up at him. "Ith'th awethome!" She returned her gaze to her new room. It had all of her favourite colours, her favourite things, and there was even enough room for her to play! She would have loved to do just that, however before she could raid her toy chest her stomach gave a loud growl. Jasper laughed at this, and reached over to ruffle her hair. "Hungry huh? We did a lot today! Shall we go make some sandwiches?"

Yeesha nodded eagerly and bounded down the stairs after her guardian. What better way to end their work than with a bacon and cheese sandwich?

Tis the season for pumpkins and candy! Or should I say, the week for pumpkins and candy. The hype for Halloween does start a little early, but it's nowhere near as long as Christmas. Anyways, this is the first time Yeesha's had Halloween at my house so it was time to introduce her to some Dawson traditions.

My sister and her two charges, Sheba and Felix, and brought over all of her Halloween decorations. I never understood why she doesn't just leave them here since she brings them over every year, but she insists she needs to have them over at her house. I think she just wants to buy more decorations every year and get rid of the old ones. Every year I stash a few of my favourites here so she doesn't dump them, but don't tell anyone I said that. She'll find all my hiding places and root me out.

Anyways, we managed to get the house all decorated for Halloween. Yeesha wanted it to be the scariest house in the neighbourhood, and we definitely did out best. I'm not sure if she just wants to show how brave she is by living in such a house or if my sister promised her the extra candy if not enough kids come. There's the fearless one in every house though, so I don't think we'll have extra candy by the time Yeesha comes home from her round of trick-or-treating. Felix and Sheba said they'd take her out, so I get to play candy giver-outer again this year. I might end up getting saved if I can convince Yeesha to let me come too. We'll see how much bribery I can get away with.

My sister brought the pumpkins as well, so we did those last night. The face on Yeesha's pumpkin is really quite terrifying, though I think it's just because the eyes and the mouth are very lopsided. I also think she got frustrated a couple of times during the cuts and just stabbed the pumpkin multiple times until it did what she wanted. It has several unexplainable holes in it, though my sister promised that nobody was hurt during the smashing of the pumpkins. I still checked Yeesha over for any cuts and scrapes. Pumpkin carving is a dangerous process!

I'll write more when I get another free moment. I promised Yeesha I'd help her with her costume (she's going as Godzilla, fitting I know) and I can hear her on the rampage looking for me. Later!

For Want of a Pony

"Jathper," Yeesha said suddenly, looking up from her colouring books, "Can I have a pony?" The kitchen went quiet as several pairs of eyes turned to look at the newest member of their family. She wanted... a pony? The alligator girl, however, seemed oblivious to the strange looks that her brother and sister were giving her. Instead, she stared expectantly at her new guardian, as though by simply asking he would produce what she wanted out of thin air. When Jasper didn't say anything, she pressed on. "You wanted a pony too, right Jathper? When you were little, 'course." Everyone wanted a pony when they were younger, right? Or maybe that was just girls. Either way, she wanted a pony, and she was going to get one. The novelty of having a dragon in an egg was starting to wear off, as the egg never did anything exciting. But if she got a pony, then she could pet it and ride it and it would be exciting! Or so she assumed.

"Look, Yeesh, you've already got a pony. Or at least, something close enough to one," Sheba replied, saving Jasper from having to answer the question. The sea lion shifter was leaning across the table to speak to Yeesha, though there was something about the expression on her face that made the alligator girl a little suspicious. As far as Yeesha knew, nobody in this family owned even a fish. If they couldn't even take care of a fish, how could they claim to be able to take care of something as large as a pony? "I never theen it," she protested, frowning a little at Sheba. "What ith it?" Sheba snickered, and the pointed a finger at her brother Felix, who was finishing some long over-due homework at the end of the kitchen table. "Blubber over there is as good as a pony. He can even swim better, can't you?" Felix muttered something that sounded like "cow" under his breath, but didn't take his eyes off his homework.

Yeesha seemed wholly unimpressed by Sheba's joke. Scowling, she turned her attention back to her original target. Jasper seemed to have recovered from his shock moments ago, and was watching her with all his eyes. "Can I have a pony?" The alligator girl repeated, tail flicking, "I want one." Her guardian smiled at her and leaned back in his chair. "Okay, but where are we going to put it? Are you going to let it sleep in your room?" "Yeth!" Yeesha responded automatically. A pony in her room! That would be awesome! She could love it and pet it every day! "If I get you one will you promise to be kind to it and treat it well? And share it with your dragon?" "Yeth yeth I promith!" Yeesha squealed excitedly, glad that she had managed to convince her new guardian to get her a pony. If she had known it was going to be this easy she would have asked him for two ponies!

Jasper chuckled. "Alright then. You heard her, so you guys are witnesses. I'll go out and get your pony if you stay here and promise not to bother Felix." The alligator girl nodded eagerly, wiggling in her seat as she watched her guardian head for the front door. She was getting a pony! She was getting a pony! The minutes seemed to tick by like hours, as Yeesha tried to focus on her colouring. What would her pony look like? Would Jasper know which one to pick for her? Surely he would be able to find the prettiest one there. He would know that she wanted only the best. She was just about to get another colouring book when she heard the front door slam. He was back!

"I have your pony!"

Yeesha came barrelling out of the kitchen, yellow eyes darting around for any signs of her pony. A large box, tied with a yellow ribbon sat on the floor of the entrance way. Jasper leaned casually on the doorframe behind it, and he nodded when Yeesha approached the box. "Go on, you can open it." Forgoing scissors or any other sharp objects, the alligator girl used her teeth to tear the ribbon and then get rid of the tape that held the box together. When the sides of the box were sufficiently torn away, she stepped back to have a look at what was inside. There, standing still as a statue, was a life-size black stuffed pony. The alligator girl stared at it, speechless.

"You didn't say you wanted a real one."

"... JATHPER!"

Things have picked up at work, so I'm afraid I haven't been able to write much lately. Not that that seems to matter, since Yeesha is intent on recording her own progress as we go along (whenever she's not colouring). That suits me just fine, for the most part, however I think it necessary to write down my own thoughts every so often. One, because I like to be able to refer back to them later, and two because Yeesha has never been the most honest of children. I wouldn't be surprised if she lied frequently about the people she meets based solely on the fact that they did something she didn't like. It is also very possible that she conveniently forgets to record events that she dislikes or thinks are too boring to be worth mentioning. She is who she is, however, which is why I must write up my own journals.

But, I digress. These past few weeks have been a little hectic, as I mentioned earlier. With all the Valentine's Day shopping and preparation for Easter-time holidays, us taxi cab drivers have been in a much higher demand. I can't stay home as often as I would like, and I would leave Yeesha with the neighbours but she's already proven incapable of befriending their cat. Felix and Sheba were also poor choices, since it ended up in a very messy and costly brawl in the living room. Finally, my sister agreed to take her, and she's got her own honourary seat at Layla's tea shop. I think it's rather cute, and Yeesha seems to be much better behaved there. She's allowed to do all her colouring and writing so long as she doesn't write all over the table, and so far that's suited her just fine.

In the free time I have we've been taking advantage of the warm weather and visiting the beach. I think she's hoping to see that friend of hers there again – I believe his name is Leviathan – but so far we've missed him. She's run into him a couple of times at the shop, so I can't say she doesn't get out to meet her friends. It's good that she's socializing with kids her age. Perhaps it will teach her to be more likeable or even maybe a little more approachable. Then again, there is something distinctly frightening about approaching an alligator face on, and Yeesha's yellow eyes are very good at scaring people away. I'm sure it's something in the slow blink.

We've also started attending some speech lessons to try and curb Yeesha's lisp. Though I got her fairly old, she did appear to be growing out of it, but I don't want to take any chances. Layla recommended it as well, so she goes every day after lunch. Her 's' sounds are getting much better, and she can even say her name without a lisp! It's progress, which is nice, so I won't complain. Hopefully we can fix that up so she doesn't feel self-conscious about when she gets older. That, and I'm sure she'll punch someone in the face if they ever make a negative comment about it.

So that's what we've been up to. Exiting isn't it? Write later!
~ Jasper
