.: Of catbirds:.

"Can I keep him?"

Those four words a parent dreaded hearing beyond (almost) any other. Naomi dried off the plate she had been washing, set her shoulders, and turned to see what her wayward daughter had done now. Since her startling growth (Naomi hadn't expected to be quite so sudden or suprising) Kaimi seemed more into everything than she had as a toddler. It was to be expected, Naomi supposed... but with the added height and motor skills came added trouble, too.

Turning, she looked down at her little girl with the long flowing hair and the bright green bundle in her arms. She frowned. "What is it?"

"Well it's... y'see... I found this sprout. And I put it in the garden to make it grow. And then this morning he was sitting there right where I planted it. Like he just grew out of the ground. And if he really did grow out of the ground, then he's mine anyways, isn't he? I mean... if I planted him and he grew then he's my responsibility and... and..." Big hopeful golden eyes looked up at her guardian as Kaimi snuggled the furry green bundle closer. "I'll take care of him, I promise..." She added hopefully. "You wont have to do a thing..."

Naomi sighed, and then smiled. She recalled her own first pet, a little puppy that she and her sister had found in the woods. They, too, had begged their parents just as her daughter was now begging her. She also remembered how, despite all their promises to do all the work... scooping poop and feeding and brushing and everything... that their parents had ended up doing the brunt of the work. Still....

"I suppose you may keep it." She said, still vaguely wondering what "it" was. "As long as you take care of it... What is it's name?"

"It's a he" her daughter responded, dancing about with glee that she'd be allowed to keep her pet. "I'm going to call him Kanunu."

"Kanunu?" Naomi about choked holding back her laughter. "What kind of a name is Kanunu? Where on earth did you hear that?"

Kaimi held the bundle closer defensively. "I like it. And he likes it too."

"Alright then, Kanunu it is. We'll have to pick up some food and toys... you'd better find out what he eats."

Kaimi beamed so brightly Naomi thought that this girl could probably coax the sun to rise in the middle of the night. This was what being a parent was about, then. This was why she'd decided to get a child in the first place.

****

Kaimi brought Kanunu up to her room and set the sleepy green ball on her bed. The little gryphkit raised his head and blinked, then opened his beak in a wide yawn.

"See, Kanunu." Kaimi said, holding up her stuffed tiger. "This is Fredward. He'll be your friend too. And these..." She pointed towards the cluster of pastel colored ponies that were organized in their battle-ranks in one corner. "These are my ponies. You can play with them too if you like."

Kanunu stretched and made an imperious chirping sound, sniffing the air and ruffling his wings. Then, crouching low with his butt in the air, he leapt at Kaimi, flapping wildly to land on her shoulder.

The girl beamed with joy. This, she decided, was the Best Pet Ever. Petting his tail (which was wrapped around her neck like a golden collar) she continued to introduce him to all of her toys.

.:Beginnings:.

Kaimi was dancing in the backyard. Her television watching had progressed from strictly Indiana Jones to an avid fascination with Bollywood films and Cirque du Soleil. So, while she couldn't quite turn a cartwheel yet, she was practicing imitating the sharp fluid movement of Indian dance. Her arms angled in the air as she moved her hips and bumped her butt out.

Kanunu was napping, curled around the stuffed tiger (which, when Kaimi wasn't carrying the toy, the little catbird liked to drag around in his beak proudly, like a fresh kill.) It was a happy scene, though Kaimi, despite her inherent grace, couldn't seem to get her belly to roll with the same fluidity of the dancers on television.

Naomi, who had been watching her from the kitchen window, smiled as she stepped outside. "Kaimi..." She called, "I want to talk to you."

Stopping her dance, the girl tried to cartwheel over to her guardian and failed miserably. She looked up from where she'd fallen on the ground and smiled. "What is it?"

"It's time for you to start school."

"Whats school?"

"School is where girls and boys go to learn how to read and write and things." Naomi smiled, "There'll be lots of other kids there for you to meet and play with." She added enticingly. "And we'll go out and buy you some new clothes."

Kaimi couldn't care less about new clothes. She liked the simple outfit she wore nearly every day. The sarong and tube top provided for excellent movement in her vast array of activities. But the thought of new people to meet, new friends to make... this intrigued her. The air took on a noticeably more floral aroma, indicating her pleasure at the prospect. "Okay. Do I really have to get new clothes? I like my clothes."

"Yes... you dont want to wear the same thing every day." Naomi said, supressing a smile. Most little girls loved new clothes, didn't they? She wouldn't classify her daughter as a tomboy per se... Just perhaps a girl with different priorities than most? Not that it mattered.

"When do I start?" Kaimi asked, standing up and brushing the grass from her bottom. Her knees were stained with green and brown smears and her hair was wildly tangled, her face flushed and smiling.

"Well... I've got to go to the Liberty Center and enroll you..."

Kaimi's eyes lit up at the mention of the Liberty Center. "Will Bishop be at school? And Delilah? And Madison?" The thought of seeing the friends she'd already made, especially Bishop, made the girl nearly dance again for excitement. Bishop didn't know she'd gotten big! Neither did anyone else! How much fun that would be, to show off to them her new height!

"Well, I dont know. But it's possible. Theres something else." Naomi sat on the edge of the deck and patted the spot next to her. When her daughter joined her, she continued. "I have to start working again. Mostly I'll be at work when you're at school, so I'll be able to take you there and pick you up. But sometimes you'll have to come home by yourself and wait a little bit until I get home too." She pulled a key on a leather thong out of her pocket. "Here's a key to the house. Now, wear it around your neck and only let yourself into the house. Nobody else, unless I've said it's okay. And dont talk to strangers, okay? Unless it's a policeman." Her safety talk seemed to be woefully inadequate, especially given all the fears that a still relatively new parent suffered. "If anyone you dont know tries to take you somewhere or talk to you, you turn and run away to the nearest grown-up that you do know."

Kaimi frowned a little. She didn't know why all the precaution was necessary... wouldn't that inhibit her making new friends? To her, the world was still a bright and hopeful place. And the people in the world were all good and upstanding citizens. Evil didn't really exist to Kaimi, except in movies. And in movies, you could tell who was evil by their swastikas and stuff. And their glowing evil eyes. And their guns. And anyways... the good guy always won so even if a movie-villain were to encounter the little girl, she was certain that she would, under any circumstances, come out triumphant. But she nodded anyways, listening to Naomi's predictions with half an ear.

Finally satisfied that her daughter was aware of proper protocol regarding strangers, Naomi patted her on the head and stood up. "I'll go and finish making lunch, then. I'll call you when it's ready. What kind of jam would you like on your sandwich?"

"Grape!" Kaimi answered enthusiastically. Now that was an important question. "And Kanunu wants grape too!" He didn't... the catbird liked meat and things. But Kaimi figured she'd get an extra sandwich out of the deal at least.

Smiling, Naomi went back inside. At least, if she had to go back to work, her daughter would be safe at the school. And she'd look into arranging something for after school if she needed to, still cautious about Kaimi being home alone, even for an hour or two. Perhaps it was time to move her practice to Gaia, where she would be closer...

.: Dance, Dance!:.

Ballet was a joke, Kaimi had determined. It was slow and it was boring. Translation: It required waaaay too much discipline for the girl. Tap was a little more fun, she liked the noise that the shoes made. And Jazz was even more appealing. But none of these dances really held the kind of fluidity that Kaimi knew lay sleeping in her muscles.

But she had seen, on television, the bellydancers and the hula dancers and the like. The liquid movements of the women appealed to her, and so Kaimi had decided that hula, namely Tahitian hula, and belly dancing was just too awesome not to learn. The problem being, she had no teacher and really, no idea what she was doing.

Clumsy girl. Where on earth are you getting your rythm? One of the voices asked her ascerbically. They had been getting stronger, the voices. More vocal. And, admittedly, they were sometimes a little annoying.

"What are you talking about?" She answered, piqued. Nobody was there in the backyard except for Kanunu, so there was nobody to witness her conversation with the air. Naomi was at work, where she seemed to be spending more and more time these days. Luckily, Kaimi didn't mind a little bit of independence. Or a lot of independence.

You have no rythm! You have no movement! Pah! Living in the city is crushing your soul.

"There is nothing wrong with my soul! And besides, this isn't the city. It's the suburbs, dummy!"

There was a ghostly sound of laughter that danced on the wind. Close your eyes, girl. Close your eyes and just listen.

Obediently, Kaimi closed her eyes and listened. "What am I supposed to be hearing, here?"

Your heart. The beating of your heart. Listen.

Sighing, Kaimi listened. The ba-bump ba-bumping. She focused on it, subconsciously pushing all other thoughts out of her head until it was the only thing she heard. Okay then... "Your point?"

Now... up on the ball of your foot. Good. Now down and up on the ball of the other. Good. Now your hips. In a figure eight. Good... see?

Remarkably, Kaimi did see. And when she paid attention to the rythm her body seemed to take over naturally until her hips moved in the simple figure eight as gracefully as she could have hoped at that point. "Oh! Oh! I'm doing it!" She squealed in excitement. Forgetting about the dance and the voices, she skipped over to where Kanunu napped in the sun and swept him up, spinning them both in circles and earning herself an irritated squawk and a n** on the wrist for her trouble.

But still... it was a start and Kaimi was thrilled. She was sure that now she had the basic gist of things, it would only be a matter of days until she was ready to be a famous dancer, just like the women on tv! This was, in every way possible, so much better than stupid ballet.

So engrossed in developing this new and fascinating hobby, Kaimi practiced until it grew dark out. Still, Naomi was not home. Which was unusual for her, but the girl was so caught up in what she was doing that she hardly even noticed. She'd dragged an old cd player outside and thus, with the music blaring and her hips and arms moving, she didn't even hear the slight squeak of the back gate opening. She didn't even realize that she was suddenly being watched.

"Very nice." Said a silken voice from behind her. There was the sound of elegantly mocking clapping.

Kaimi spun around, her eyes wide, not even sure where the sudden surge of fear and adrenaline had come from. A faint sheen of sweat beaded her brow and she was breathing hard. "Who..." Her eyes narrowed slightly as she recognized the hooded man. "You're Leeward." She said softly, taking a step backwards. "You should go."

"Now now... It's uncle Leeward." The man said, taking a step forward as she moved back. His voice was compelling, and Kaimi suddenly found herself unable to move or look away from him. "You've grown, little Kaimi." He said, taking another step forward. "You're looking quite...lovely."

She didn't like the way his eyes moved over her. Kaimi was naive and innocent still, but there was something in the way he looked at her that made her both want to go to him and want to cover herself so completely that not an inch of skin showed. She swallowed, her heartbeat getting even faster.

"Yes..." He had her completely in his thrall, and he closed the small distance between them. "Quite lovely indeed..." Leeward said, grinning like daggers and reaching one pale, cold hand out to run his fingers gently over her cheek. "So young... so full of life..."

Kaimi felt her body flush with heat and a confusing mixture of fear, revulsion and desire surged through her. A faint whimper escaped her throat as his hand slid over her cheek and down her neck. His touch caressed her arm and then came to rest on her waist, pulling her close to him. Unable to resist, Kaimi obeyed his unspoken order, her eyes glazing over.

"Yess..." Leeward whispered, bending his head to her ear. "Thats a good girl..." His grip around her waist tightened as his other hand moved her thick hair from her vulnerable neck. "Thats a good girl..." He said again, as if to calm a skittish horse.

Kaimi was so deeply under his spell that she couldn't even react. She couldn't make sense of those familiar voices in her head shrieking warnings. She didn't hear the car pulling up in the driveway, or the calling of her guardian.

Leeward, however, was aware of it all. And the next thing Kaimi knew, she was on the grass, blinking up at Naomi sleepily.

"Baby?" Naomi asked, concerned. "Kaimi, are you okay? Did you fall asleep out here?"

"Asleep?" That must have been it. The last few minutes, the encounter with Leeward, was suddenly hazy and unreal. "Yes... I must have been asleep." And then, out of the blue and for the first time in her short life, Kaimi began to cry. Big, tearing sobs that she couldn't seem to control.

"Oh, honey..." Naomi crooned, lifting her daughter into her arms. "It must have been a nightmare."

From the shadows on the street, Leeward chuckled to himself. He would prove himself to be a worse nightmare than either of them could ever guess.

.:Not Quite Right:.

"It does too work like Mary Poppins." Kaimi grumbled out loud, turning an old black umbrella in her hands and making a face. There was no one else around and Naomi was making lunch inside.

Television isn't real, you idiot. The voices, two distinct entities now, were chiming in where, in Kaimi's opinion, they didn't belong. Umbrellas don't make you fly.

"Mary Poppins could fly." Argued Kaimi. It didn't seem odd to her at all that she was talking to what appeared to be nothing but air. Though she hadn't told anyone about the voices, she'd merely assumed that everyone heard them. Maybe not her voices in particular, but voices all the same. "Mary Poppins could fly, so why can't I do it too?"

Because it doesn't work that way! You're a girl, not a bird. That umbrella hasn't lifted you off the ground yet, has it?

"Maybe it doesn't know what it's supposed to do." Kaimi said, her features etched into a frown. She looked around for the ladder leaning against the garden shed and then stubbornly made her way towards it. "I'll just have to teach it."

You'll just have to go and get your arm broken.

"Oh buzz off!" The girl spat. She very rarely lost her temper. Was never anything but a sweet ray of sunshine. But it was becoming very, very clear to Kaimi that she really didn't appreciate people telling her that she couldn't do things that she was surely capable of. Unfolding the umbrella, she stood at the foot of the ladder and raised it into the air. "Lift me up." She said. Of course nothing happened. "Up!" She demanded again, imperiously.

Maybe it's the wrong kind of umbrella. The more masculine of the voices commented snarkily. Kaimi ignored it, closed the umbrella and started stubbornly up the ladder.

She spent a lot of time on the roof of the garden shed. It was peaceful and warm and had an amazing view of the neighborhood. She liked being up high and feeling all alone. As if she were the ruler of all that she saw. She had never, though, even entertained the thought of jumping off before. It all made such perfect sense, though. Even if the umbrella couldn't make her fly, it at least could make her float gracefully to the ground. Umbrellas were good for catching winds. The fact that the day was hot and completely without a breeze didn't even register.

Opening up the umbrella, she clutched the handle with both hands and held it high above her head. All of the sudden looking down made her feel a little bit dizzy. Nevertheless, she took a deep breath and squeezed her eyes shut. Then, with an inordinate amount of faith in an inanimate object, she stepped off the roof.

**

Naomi heard a scream and a crash and dropped the salad bowl she'd been holding, tearing out the door and looking around for the source of the noise. "Kaimi!" Her heart pounded an irrational tattoo in her chest as she ran over to her rosebushes - now smushed by the flailing child and broken umbrella that seemed to have fallen into them.

"Kaimi! What on earth!" Leaning down, she extracted her daughter from the foliage and began examining her for breaks and bruises. Luckily, the little girl seemed to have come away with only a few minor scratches from the rose thorns. Naomi heaved a sigh of relief before she registered that her daughter was shouting, and not at her.

"Don't laugh at me!" Kaimi bellowed in an unusual fit of anger. "It can too be done! I just need another umbrella!"

"Kaimi?" Naomi blinked at her daughter who didn't appear to hear her at all. "Kaimi, who are you talking to?" She gently shook the girl's shoulders until those familiar golden eyes turned to their guardian and all the fight seemed to drain out of the girl.

"I'm sorry, mom." Kaimi said, smiling sheepishly and seeming much more herself. "It's just that they were being..." Here she trailed off and frowned again. "I can so tell her! Just shut up!" Shaking her head a little, Kaimi smiled faintly at Naomi. "They were just being so annoying and I couldn't stand it! They told me the umbrella wouldn't float me. And... okay. So it didn't. But they were so... smug!"

Now it was Naomi's turn to frown. Had her daughter hit her head when she fell? "Kaimi..." Naomi began slowly. "Who are you talking to?"

Wide, guileless eyes regarded Naomi. Eyes that simply couldn't lie. "The voices did. They're always talking to me. Mostly they don't say anything useful, though."

Naomi's frown deepened as she felt Kaimi's forehead for fever. It was cool to the touch, however. "And these voices... they're always there?"

"Nearly always." Kaimi answered, her expression questioning.

It must be a concussion, Naomi decided hopefully. A concussion and after a little bit Kaimi would be good as new. She certainly hoped so, because the only other explanation for people hearing voices in their heads was schizophrenia. And, while she was a psychiatrist, she didn't specialize in such disorders. Nor did she work with children. It was an entirely different field of study and Naomi was definitely out of her depth.

"C'mon, baby." She said, taking Kaimi by the hand. "Lets get you cleaned up and then have some lunch. No more climbing on the shed roof, either." Ignoring her daughter's groan of protest, Naomi's mind was already elsewhere. She'd observe her for a few days. And then, if the odd behavior didn't let up, she'd contact the Liberty Center and see if they had a staff psychologist on hand. Maybe this was common for babies who came out of cabbages. There was simply no way to know.

.:We're all mad here:.

"The thing is, schizophrenia in children is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose."

Naomi paced the kitchen, frequently peering out the window to watch her daughter who seemed content to practice dancing in the backyard. The psychiatrist's voice came through the phone, calm and reassuring.

"Many children have imaginary friends. It's really very common, especially in children with healthy to overactive imaginations. And theres nothing wrong, at her age, with having imaginary friends. These voices... they don't seem to be sending her any destructive or dangerous messages."

Naomi gave a sigh of relief at this. The concerns that had been haunting her thoughts weren't totally gone, but they were significantly eased.

"At this point, I really can't give you any kind of diagnosis. However, especially with the fact that we have no medical or psychological history on your daughter, I would like to consider seeing her. Just a bi-weekly follow-up. I'd also like you to have her start journaling. Just purchase her something little she can write and draw in privately. Have her bring it to our sessions. Perhaps with another creative outlet, she'll stop being so convinced she's hearing these voices."

Naomi nodded, then realized that the doctor couldn't see that over the phone. "Of course. Thank you for your help." She peered once more out the window at Kaimi, who was getting better at her hula by the day. Her hips could move so fast now that they were little more than a blur. She would, of course, purchase the diary for her daughter. She would also, more than likely, seek a second opinion.

Dear Diary,

Mom took me to a doctor a few days ago, but the doctor was really weird. She didn't give me a checkup or anything... she just talked to me and asked me all sorts of questions. She had me draw pictures and look at inkblots. It was really weird. Mom says that Dr. Bowden is a mind-doctor kind of like she is. I didn't know anything was wrong with my mind, but now I'm supposed to write things down in here. Except I dont really know what to write...

Um... my name is Kaimi. I dont really know how old I am because I age different than other kids and I came from a cabbage. Um... I really like to dance and I dont like school at all. I like art and PE and music, but I dont really like math or science and I HATE wasting hours and hours sitting at a desk listening to the teachers talk. It's so boring! Especially since they tell me everything I need to know anways. Sometimes they make me mad because they're such know-it-alls.

I think part of the reason I'm seeing this new doctor is because of them. I tried to explain it to mom and to the doctor, but I dont think they understood. They dont think they're real but I know they are! I hear them all the time and they're not coming from inside me... I asked them who they were because I had never even thought about asking them before.

One says to call it Ficus. Thats the one that sounds more like a boy. The other one says to call it Flora, thats the one that sounds kind of like a girl. But I can't see them. But just because you can't see something doesn't mean it isn't real. Like God. Lots of people believe in gods that they cant see and can't prove. But that doesn't mean that gods or a God doesn't exist. It just means you have faith, right? Or air. You can't see air but everyone knows that exists. Because we all breathe it! Ficus and Flora (since I guess I should call them by their names now that I know what they are) say that thinking about things like faith is a good thing to do. They think that I should just sit still and think about the universe and how big it is and how, even though I'm only a tiny little part of it, I'm also as big as it is because we're all tied together. They say that the whole universe is inside each one of us and that if I sit still and concentrate on it, I'll be able to feel the universe. I dont know if I believe them, but maybe I could try.

I thought everybody heard things like I hear Ficus and Flora. But I guess that they dont. And I guess that talking to them makes some people worried. They think that it's unnatural. So I guess I should try not to talk to them when other people around. But that doesn't seem fair! They're real, why shouldn't I be able to talk to them? But I dont want to worry mom anymore. Thats why I didn't tell her that uncle Leeward came over one night when I was home alone. That would make her really, really upset.

I dont like uncle Leeward. He makes mom really nervous and angry and he frightens me. I dont know what it is about him... but he's just scary! He makes me feel so weak and helpless. Every time he looks at me I feel like he's trying to get in my head. It makes me feel dizzy and weird. I hope he doesn't come back... he hasn't been around in awhile. But he knows something that mom wants to know but he doesn't want her to know. I wish I knew what it was... maybe I could help. Maybe I could get him to leave us alone or something.

So I guess this writing thing isn't all that bad. I guess I can do it once in awhile. If it will make mom and the doctor happy, I might as well.

.:Sisterly Love:.

Kaimi parked her bike in the backyard and opened the sliding door. The sound of wailing and shouting assaulted her ears and she reeled a little. Was everything okay? What was going on? "Naomi?" She called out, cautiously stepping into the living room. Kanunu streaked down the stairs, every hair on his body standing up straight and vaulted into the relative safety of Kaimi's arms, chittering and grumbling.

"What..." Kaimi frowned. The shouts seemed to be coming from upstairs. "Naomi?" She called out again.

"Upstairs, sweetie! Come on up, please!" Naomi's voice was tinged with frustration and what was very likely apprehension.

Kaimi began climbing the stairs and as soon as she did Kanunu leapt from her arms and flew to the top of the bookshelf in the living room. He seemed to think it was the safest place from whatever was causing the noise upstairs.

The bathroom door was cracked open and with a cautious little poke Kaimi pushed the door open a little wider. Her guardian was kneeling on the floor by the bathtub with her sleeves rolled up. The source of the howling appeared to be a very small blond girl with unfortunate looking fangs and wings settled on her head. Kaimi knew at least one other person with such wings, though Bishop was much nicer than this small person seemed to be.

The blond girl in the tub did not appear to want to be there. And by the volume of water on the floor and soaking Naomi's clothes, it looked like she had made her desires perfectly clear.

"Mom?" Kaimi ventured. She didn't call her guardian 'mom' very often. But the situation was terribly confusing. "What's going on?"

"Oh, Kaimi, thank god. Here, hand me that towel."

Kaimi did so obediently and watched as Naomi wrestled the kid out of the tub and wrapped her so tightly in the towel that the little girl seemed unable to move. Poisonous green eyes glared at Naomi and at Kaimi as well.

"Kaimi. This is Mara. Mara, this is Kaimi."

"WHAT is going on?" Kaimi asked again. Knowing the little monster's name didn't explain her presence.

"I got a letter. Compelling me to adopt her. Kaimi, Mara is going to live with us from now on. She's your new sister."

"Sister?" Weren't sisters supposed to be cool? This Mara character looked like she wanted to take an axe to everyone else in the room.

"Mara, you be nice now." Naomi muttered as the little bundle struggled violently. But Mara was just trying to reach out to Kaimi. "Here." Naomi said, handing the toddler off.

Kaimi, being a smallish girl, struggled to find a comfortable way to hold Mara. "Hi." She said, a bit bewildered. "So you're my sister, huh?"

Mara grinned, a rather menacing looking sight given her nasty fangs. "Sister! Ka!" And, having accepted her as a family member and given her a nickname that was easy to pronounce, Mara decided to seal the deal by biting Kaimi hard on the shoulder.

Dear Diary,

Life had been very strange lately. I'm not sure what I think about all of the changes. I've been exploring more and more on my bike, but the weather is starting to get cold and I guess I dont really like cold weather! I definitely like it better when it's hot out.

Halloween was fun. I went to a party and carved a pumpkin and then Naomi took me and Mara trick-or-treating.

Thats the big thing! I have a little sister now! I dont know if I just wasn't enough for Naomi or what, but for some reason she adopted another little girl named Mara. She's like a trainwreck! She bites and she pulls my hair and she's loud and terribly mean. But at the same time I can't help but like her in a weird way. She's so terribly nice and cute about being a horrible brat. Except she got paint all over Kanunu and he hates her. He wont leave my bedroom! I wasn't very happy about that. Naomi says she's sure Mara will grow out of it but I dont know... I dont know what to think about her. I wish that I could have a quieter sister.

Flora and Ficus are teaching me how to meditate! It's really cool and fun. I chant a mantra over and over and over and eventually the world just sort of blurs away and I feel all floaty. They told me that meditation is the way to discover the secrets of the universe and to become part of the oneness that everything is a part of. They told me that most people go through life in a state of waking sleep and that it takes a lot of work to live life awake. But thats what I'm trying to do. I really enjoy it. I can even meditate while I dance! Anyways, I guess thats all for now.
