I will be switching from playing flute to the tuba because it seems like so much fun. And there is a total of 14 tuba players and more than half are girls playing.

Tubas are pretty much the pulse of the band. There was this one time that none of my section's tubas were at school (band day at a nearby college) and everything just sounded awful... Also, two out of the three tuba players at my school are girls. It's awesome. ^_^

man,our schoool has a TOTAL of 9 tubas and I'm the only girl. Then the guys in my class always pick on me and say I was the one who messed up... then they get mad when i kick their butts on chair placemetn... they are just jealous
as a small awkward freashman the entire sectional was guys they called me muffs cause low brass had a rep for being dubious even now we've only got two girls

I had been playing clarinet for 5 years, but I really wanted tp play tuba so I taught myself (with the help of a friend) and switched this year!! I've been playing for about 6 months and i'm already better than half our section!! Tubas are awesome! I love playing tuba. We should have at least 6 tubas in our section (hopefully more freshman will come in) and i'm the only girl.

One guy definitly doesn't like me, i think he has a problem becaue i'm a girl, but i don't care. Just hope he doesn't throw his shoe at me again when I do something wrong.

I'm nervous because this will be my first marching season with tuba. I need to get in shape so I can keep up with the guys in band camp.

Tuba ROCKS!!!

Don't worry about it being your first marching season with the tuba, I was really nervous last year, too. I was in the same situation, except I played flute for five years before switching. It was painful at first, especially getting used to the extra weight, but it was really easy by the end of the season. (My school doesn't just march- we swing our instruments while in parade block. There's a picture of it on my profile.)

What kind of sousaphones does your school use though? Fiberglass are a lot lighter, but my school uses solid brass ones. I'm proud to say I carry 50 pounds of solid brass, baby. Now that's hardcore. =D

Ours are made out of brass and they weigh 60 pounds. I switched in the middle of this year so I started out marching with clarinet the whole marching season, but in the second semester I officially switched to tuba (starting next marching season) We have a "spring band" thing during the second semester. We go over marching styles and review things and invite the 8th graders soon-to-be freshman to march with us after school for 3 days, then we have a "march-a-thon". My director said I should play tuba, to see what it would be like next year.

During March-a-thon we form a 2 line parade block and march through several different stores. (some wouldn't let us come in side, so we formed an arch and played outside) I think we marched through 13 different stores, like Wal-mart, Albertsons, Lowes, etc. I had this huge purpleish green bruise from the tuba but it was cool. But I bent the bell several times (my first time marching with it) I ran into several isles, knocked down a whole isle of toys (that was kinda funny, but not intentional. The colorguard laughed at me) Hit several automatic doors and almost fell over once. And I almost broke the bus door several many times (we had to travel on yellow dogs from store to store, it was a workout just trying to get the thing on and off the bus). So the director 'gave me a taste' of what it would be like next year. I can't wait for band camp, mainly so I can practice and get used to it so I don't make another fool of myself.

During football games and any kind of pep rally we have "tuba dances" (I don't know what to call it) that we are supposed to do during any kind of cadence that the drumline plays. We had to "dance" a couple times when we played outside the stores and I looked like an idiot. I also want to try and practice those, i'm not used to jumping, swinging and whatever else we do with the tubas to go along with the cadences. I have no rhythym when it comes to dancing of any kind at all. including just swinging your instrument from side to side. Hopefully i'll get better and won't make a fool of myself. =)
