I was really disappointed with the first volume of the manga. The cover and description looked promising but once I read it I was disappointed. The second volume, however, is much better in my opinion. But the cliffhanger drives me CRAZY! How could they leave it there!! Anyway I hear that the 3rd one is coming out sometime in October...maybe.

Aghh, I was fooled into by the cover. The artwork is absolutely just stunning. And personally the storyline has really good potential, but it hasn't been really taken advantage of as of yet.
I have only read the first one so far, but I really like the idea that it brings back Toby when he's older. It's a creative twist on the old story, and seeing a mini Jareth made out of him is rather amusing.
What I really didn't like was the focus on the Goblin girl. She seemed terribly random and just thrown in so far. I really hope she doesn't become Toby's like love interest or something. I also really disliked the Japanese looking Evil Queen and daughters. That seems terribly cliche and something the all around American created manga would do. I wish American manga-ka's would stop trying to implement Japanese elements or styles that don't exactly fit into the story.
It would have made better sense if there was a different type of kingdom trying to gain control of Jareth's throne, but Jareth has always been rather bored of his kingdom so I doubt there'd be any threat of loosing his kingship if there hasn't been any action to stimulate his interest. :/
It also makes sense that Sarah is like your average librarian nerd as that would be the type of girl she lets off to be in the beginning of the movie. She dressed up as a princess, read books, and she didn't seem to have much friends in her world to be someone very popular or devoted to any productive career rather than someone who enjoyed living in fantasy worlds. Though I really never saw her with glasses... euw..
And I also dislike Toby so far. He acts like the common angsty teenager that is just rebelling for no cause. More redundant elements that could have been thought out better.
The artwork... not that great. The monsters are just dynamic, but the characters once again look like any other American made manga. It's really disappointing, but the story like I said before has potential, so hopefully they'll turn the comic around when comes the end.
I'm simply reading it just out of obligation, though it is pretty much like an officially published fan fiction. Still no matter what they do in the comic, the movie remains an entirely separate entity, untouched <3

Penguin-sama (not to fuel your American-Japanese argument there or anything), I suggest that you go ahead and invest in the second volume. Many of the issues you brought up are addressed there, especially about the Japanese-knock-off ladies who come in.
Turns out there is a rather interesting cliffhanger about the Goblin Girl at the end also.
As for Toby, well, they focus more on what would a normal human do when thrust into a world he certainly is not familiar with and forced to live in it? There is less of the emo-angsty side of him, making him a little more realistic.

I have this sneaking suspicion that the Goblin girl, Poppet, I believe her name is, is entirely human with a mask.
Having not read the second volume, as of yet, since I have no money ( gonk ), I'm not too sure.
I'll also take your word that the second volume is much better than the first.

have this theory on moppet (goblin girl). Rememeber in the movie when Sarah says all her childhood treasures are "junk" and leaves? Well in the manga it shows moppet crying. Moppet could be sarah's "inner child" she left behind. Im probably a noob because everyone knows this already eh? I just got volume one the other day haha. sweatdrop

I actually quite like it. The art is pitiful, but the covers are delicious. yum. the 2nd one is a bit better. The story, well it's just beginning, and I do think there is a lot of promise. The characters aren't quite right though. I'm quite fond of moppet! <3
