snubsnub One person in my family does, but the others are fine with it. He absolutely hates the fact that I'm learning Japanese because of what they did to us in World War II, etc. He hates asians in general sweatdrop He says things such as 'Get that crap off my computer' if I'm reading something Japanese, and just things like that. P.S. I'm not learning the language to get him mad.
Are you experiancing things like this or something similar? ;.; Are you Chinese or Korean by any chance? I know a lot of Chinese people whose parents don't want them to learn Japanese because of the wars and such.

If snubsnub's family member "hates asians in general", is it likely that he is Chinese or Korean?
On the other hand though, what DID the Japanese do to non-Asians that was so bad? I know about Pearl Harbour, but wasn't that a military attack?

Someone in my family also hates me for learning Japanese, and having an interest in Japan in general, because of WWII. I won't even tell you guys what he's been saying. However, he's pretty glad that I'm learning Cornish because it's Celtic.
My mother is pretty fed up with my interest in languages, but she doesn't hate me XD

I've got a friend who quit learning Japanese last year, and now they get very upset every time anyone speaks it near them... mainly me, though, because I'm trying to learn so many more languages! Very spiteful...

They get annoyed at me and think I'm strange, especially for learning Irish. They can't see why I would want to learn a language spoken by so few who mostly speak English too anyway. But what they really dislike is when I talk to them in Irish or Spanish.

Whenever my friend and I speak Japanese to each other in front of the father, he always says "OH Japanese got bombed!" but that is when the dad is mad and we talk about him in Japanese.

My mom always wonders why I'm learning languages other than Spanish and thinks that spanish is the only useful language (next to chinese).
I feel too many people are learning Spanish. Which is why I'm shying away from it. I don't like it when people say I should learn a language because it's USEFUL xd

I would not want to learn a language for monetary gain, I would learn it out of the interest for the culture. I wish I could learn a European language; not the commonly taught ones (French, German, Italian, Spanish, etc) but either Finnish or Swedish.

Finnish is easy to pronounce but the grammar is quite difficult though. Swedish isn't really too hard being that they import slang from english and the pronounciation is quite easy. There is a university where I live that offers a large amount of language courses including ones in Finnish, Estonian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, Samoan, Tongan, etc. But I don't want to go there because it's costs more if you're not mormon and the people in Utah aren't very kind for the most part.

Oh well, that is why we make friends and that is why this guild is here for.

Shokai I wish I could learn a European language; not the commonly taught ones (French, German, Italian, Spanish, etc) but either Finnish or Swedish. I wouldn't think it's such a good idea to shy away from certain languages because they're so 'common'. Actually, to learn a language solely based on the fact that it's less common is even less of a valid reason to learn a language, in my opinion.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but I've noticed some people have an attitude towards anyone trying to learn Japanese. It's as if they think every student of Japanese is an anime-crazed Japanophile who's just trying to be stylish. The funny thing is my interest in the language did start with anime and Japanese pop culture, and it's the same story for a lot of people, but it's long since graduated to far more than that. In fact I would say my progression went something like => anime => Japanese pop culture => Japanese culture => Japanese language => Foreign languages => General Linguistics. So it was central to deciding my career path. razz
People trying to learn Spanish are also met with an attitude I think, for kind of the opposite reason of Japanese students. Trying to learn Spanish is sometimes considered lame, and the early stages of learning the language (trying to pronounce words, "yo no hablo", etc) gives off this stereotypical image of the "hopeless gringo" trying to adopt Spanish culture.
They're unfortunate attitudes really, I don't think learning any language should ever be frowned upon or met with obstacles like that.

Actually, to learn a language solely based on the fact that it's less common is even less of a valid reason to learn a language, in my opinion. Hmmm...as for me, I want to learn something different. I do not look down upon the commonly taught languages, If I had the opportunity to learn French or German, I would do so..and if I would be willing to. I would like to learn Finnish because I want to learn about lands that I never get to hear of...I never hear much about Finland so Finland remains a mystery to me. In my opinion, I do not think anyone can give a less or more valid reason for learning a language other than the person themselves. After all, whatever the reason...one is still opening themselves up to the world.
