Ewww, nasty story. No, nothing has ever grown on my reed, but my teacher has a plastic reed, and it has lipstick on it, and it looks lke her lip was bleeding and she didn't care. lol
I would never let my reed get moldy, or let my teacher tell me that it was fine. I'd be like "If it isn't so bad, why don't you play with it?" I love music, but I'm not risking my heath for it.

None of mine have... But in 8th grade during sectionals one day we had a reed check... The sectionals that year were weird cause of schedule conflicts with other activities, so ours was clarinets, bass clarinets, and bassoons...
Well. One of the bassoons, Bo, had this absolutely disgusting reed. It was pitch black with little flecks of green and yellow-orange, and HE WAS USING IT SOMETIMES, said it was his "lucky reed"... Then the 2nd chair clarinet, Ana, had a reed that was half covered in greenish mold... The 5th chair clarinet, Jeremy, had one that didn't look playable cause there were these HUGE cracks in it (We were all impressed when he DID play on it, haha)... And Morgan, the 1st chair bass cl., had a reed that was pink. She doesn't like the taste of reeds so she used to soak them in red Kool Aid. xD
So yeah. Those 4 reeds were put up on display, we dubbed it the Wall of Shame... They just got grosser and grosser, the BD left them up all semester... And Bo, the bassoon, got a special award at the spring concert for having the nastiest reed the BD had ever seen, LOL

yes this has happened many times to me because our BD insists that we use this reed holder but if your reed is wet it doesn't let it dry. i use my own reed holder now that let's the wet reed dry. my friend's reed once grew mold over the weekend and it infected the whole reed case (holds four reeds) you could see it ozzing out.

It happens to me constantly because I live in a place that is really humid and muggy and everytime I get a new reed and break it in it eventually grows mold no matter what I do even if I put it in a reed saver or its orignial case it came in.

It happens a lot with bagpipe reeds, so i'm sure clarinet reeds won't be much different when it comes to that.

My bassoon grew moldy crap on it. There were black spots on it. o.o But I had to play it anyway, cuz my other one had broke... crying I still have it, and the spots have gotten bigger, and it doesn't respond very well anymore. I'm playing a synthetic reed now.

I used to know this sax player who never changed her reed, never took it off, and was a HORRIBLE player. She was always wondering why her instrument kept sounding so weird, and I kept telling her she wasn't taking the right care for it.
So the end of the year, she decided to actually take the mouthpiece off. She undid the ligature [sp?] and the reed actually stuck to the mouthpiece. -shudders- When she got the reed off, it was like a disease forest, covered in mold and green and white and.. and... [nightmares]
She then changed her habits, cleaned her instrument twice a week, cleaned the mouthpiece even if she just breathed on it, and changes her reeds a LOT. xD
