Ughh that happened to me the other day. Our "teacher" told me it was normal and to just forget about it. So I was trying to play my clarinet without even licking or touching my reed at all. So then I just bit down on it and "broke" it And so I told her that I broke my reed and she told me "uh oh you got in the bad habit of biting it!" Yup, sure I did.. She gave me a new one though, luckily. So clarinets/saxophones/all the other reed instruments, has anything yucky grown on your reed?

That happened to my clarinet reeds in middle school. but that was because I forgot to throw my old reeds away when I stopped playing Clairnet. If my reed that I was playing on had mold in it, I would throw it away without even bothering to play it. Mold and mildew.. ew.

Icky oh gawd for teh sake of your instrument and the sake of your own hygene please keep clean reeds! Not only does it ruin your tone it ruins your instrument. Always wipe the excess spit off your reed and take it off the mouthpiece when your done playing! *gags*

It does happen, mostly when you don't store your reeds well. There are a lot of different kinds of reed mold too. Make sure you store your reeds in a container that allows them to dry properly. If you don't want to trash a reed that has a bit of mold on it, soak it in lemon juice overnight. The acid is usually enough to kill the mold without damaging the reed. But since single reeds are pretty cheap, its probably better to just replace them. Also, get a mouthpiece brush and a grit soap and wash your mouthpiece and ligature every now and then. Don't store your reed on your mouthpiece either.

When I was a beginner in 6th grade this girl I knew never took the reed off her mouthpiece and when the director was checking reeds it wouldn't come off. He had to pry it off with something and when he did the entire back was covered in mold eek disgusting.

Her conscience calls the guilty to come home. When I was first starting out on oboe last year, I accidentally grew a little bit of mold on my reed. I ended up flipping out and making a huge scene ("OMGOMGOMG EWWWWWWWW"), but it just washed off. :3 Your tears don't fall and crash around me...

My friend once had a reed that was covered with black dots.....
But as for me, my reeds haven't grown mold because I always wipe the spit off when I'm done playing. But I absolutely HATE that spitty smell. Not spit itself, but this nasty smell that I can't even describe. Then again, it kinda smells like sausage casings.... >.< but whenever I smell it, I seriously gag.

Omg, that's so sick. gonk It's never happened to me.
But there was this one kid last year who had maggots or something crawling around in his mouthpiece. He was so calm about it too.

I have had that happen too Quite a few times. I'm poor and Reeds are hard to come by and people were always borrowing them! I could never have enough for myself. crying . My band teacher tried to be of help but he always wanted five bucks for them. crying I was oober broke!! The situation is different now that I can get into my bank account and get money whenever I need it. I wish that would have been the case two years ago.
