Kaye Kilowatt I was recently made section leader for the 2010-2011 marching band.
We do not have a flute section, you see. We have 11 marching piccolos.
[/facepalm] That's cool. I believe the majority of college marching bands don't have a flute section, just piccolos. No one can really hear the flutes, although their job is to soften the sound of the brass section.

I'm still rocking out as the second flute in our school band. I also am going to learn the piccolo, so hopefully that's going to be fun ^^

Spurple Keltzy How, sad. Hmm, I suppose it's better to have few good flutes than many bad flutes (with a few good ones too.) Augh, last year there were nine of us, and no one could hear any of us at all. Then one day, I went to an orchestra concert at the college, and they had about 25 violins, and three flutes, plus a slew of other instruments. The sad thing was, even when one flute was playing, I could hear them perfectly fine over the rest of the orchestra. Yes. I'd definitely rather have only a few good flutes Out of the nine we have in wind ensemble (not including me), four are sophomores, and none of them are good. I'm constantly wanting to take their flutes from them and show them how to play, but I can't, 'cause I'm on sax for pep band. >.< I want to beat them repeatedly over the head with their instruments and send them back to concert band. I may be slightly hypocritical because I was in wind ensemble as a sophomore, but I was GOOD... I worked hard and I was better than all the other flute players. I doubt the sophomore girls even practice more than once a week, and they're not very good. >.< When I said I wanted more people in Wind Ensemble, I didn't mean more flutes. x_x Wow, we have 12 flutes all together and u can really only hear about 3-4

I'M A FLUTE! This summer, I was even thinking about looking into finding an open-hole too. I've been playing for three years, and I just graduated from my school - at which I played as 1st chair in the band for flutes. I love my flute... I call it Fredrick sometimes. A joke from my friends and I ^ ~ ^.

Here is some tips from a 6-7 year flautist! 1-posture! 2-Don't bob..But swaying is okay, It helps your tone. Trust me!~ 3-BREATH LIKE A VACUMN BABY! > biggrin 4-Keep your flute straight, it helps alot. But your arms get tired after a while.. 5-NEVER,EVER...EEVVEERR, Eat before you play your instrument. 6- Also...If you get sight reading down, you will have no problem. 7- Scan first, read later. 8- Finger as you scan, if you come across some problems as you finger, thats a problem spot. I was recently moved up to the first flute part in my high school's marching band. It's exciting, but it is yet another thing my band director can hold against me.
My feet were crosed and he threatened to demote me...
i might be playing piccolo in band this year. I borrowed one from the school and it plays well. Is it only supposed to go as low as a D?
