well u should teach them the basics first. like what did u first learn when u started? or u could go to the hardest stuff first, they would complain but then once they got that down then they would complain the other stuff is 2 easy. i think that's the best way to do it. that's how i taught and i had good resuts. although i don't play flute anymore sweatdrop i play clarinet but i taught a kid to lay flute in the begining of the year when i had been playing flute

screamin-in_pain ravenkitty776 Well, not exactly. There are some pieces where the harder parts go to the brass, or another instrument gets a solo and we don't. But usually we get more stuff since we're the higher voice in the band. Unless you're a piccolo, then you get to always be heard, no matter what note you're playing! mrgreen I know. No matter what we're playing we never get a solo. And we work our a** off. We have to work harder than any other section in our band. I've been in 3 marching shows so far and there was a flute solo every year. But this past year, I had the solo and it was so pretty! ^^ The song was called "Solas Ane"

And even then the only good it's for is to soften the sound of the trumpets and other brass.

Ookami_Shelby: Omg, I freaking love Solas Ane. We played it at our Winter Concert. I also had the wonderful opportunity to play the flute solo. Though, I was kind of jealous of the pic solo... xP My school doesn't have a marching band. :[ But we do play in pep-band during football season.
If anyone is interested... I used to play a Yamaha student flute then upgraded to a Muramatsu professional flute. Yes I know, it's a HUGE step up. But I got to say, Muramatsu really knows how to make its flutes. It plays so beautifully, the notes come out like melted butter.
I also have a burning question!!! So I kind of suck at flutter tonguing and was wondering if anyone had any advice to help me out.

Muppins: Flutter tonguing is definitely a challenge. I haven't fully mastered it, but I have two methods told to me by two different people. If anyone has better methods than this, please speak up, because I'm not sure if these world for other people.
Method 1: This isn't the most effective method ever. A jazz band director told it to me, so it depends on what song you're playing. He told me: "act like you're giving someone a raspberry". Just basically buzz your lips. It's kind of hard to describe, so it might not work since I can only describe it.
Method 2: Work your way up. If you haven't already, learn double-tonguing and find a way to do it faster. I haven't actually tried this, so yeah...
I hope this kind of helped. If it didn't, sorry for wasting your time, heh heh... ^^;;

I didn't actually play it, but I started listening to Samuel Hazo music after my band played Voices of the Sky. Solas Ane and Fantasy on a Japanese Folksong are my favorites. On another note, my friend also moved from a Yamaha to a Muramatsu, but she's really good so yeah....

Lykaios: The thing with the "raspberry" method is that's really more for trumpets, I feel like. On flute, to get the air moving downward at the same time is really difficult. I've been using a "rolling your r's" kind of technique. Literally, fluttering your tongue. I can do it fine without my flute, but not with. Lol. I manage to hold it for like two seconds and then it dies.
AirTVfan: I've never heard of Voices of the Sky or Fantasy on a Japanese Folksong. I'll be sure to look them up later. biggrin

If you can roll your r's really hard, like if you're trying to say "perro" or "carro," then you're already at a good step. What I do is point my air a little more downward than I would if I wasn't trying to flutter tongue. That also applies to higher notes, although I'm still trying to get those right. But what you need to remember is push fast air through at the same time. One way I'd practice this is putting your hand up to your face and blowing as hard as you can with the best flute embouchure, and then adding the rr sound.
Another way is to gargle. I don't know how she does it, but my friend can gargle the back of her throat. My theory is that instead of vibrating her tongue against her teeth, it's her uvula against the back of her mouth. My dad can do it, but I can't, so really the only way this applies to you is if you can easily do that. Once again, it's a matter of keeping the gargle sound going while pushing fast air through your mouth and lips.

ravenkitty776 lil_kitty_TNA ravenkitty776 http://www.armstrongflutes.net/flutes/product.php?model=800B My flute. It's not, like, uber special, but it's pretty nice. Plus it's all silver and it has a gold lip plate and crown. Just thought I'd show it to you guys, and maybes anyone else can post pics of their flute? I've also had an Armstrong 303 for a flute(it's only got a silver head joint), a crappy Armstrong marching flute, and an Armstrong metal piccolo which I use for band and also now for marching band! And, yes, that means I won't be using my bad flute anytime soon. Armstrong 303? I was looking into purchasing a 303B But my music dealer advised me to buy a Brio B10.Well I personally recommend Armstrong as like a pretty good step-up, but it depends on what you like. A 303B only has a SS head joint I believe, and the 800B is all silver. But I advise that if you want to get a more professional instrument or something, to go and buy it used at a good dealer. That's where my dad gets my instruments, and they all work fine. I have a Miyazawa flute.. it's this awesome japanese made flute.. I absolutely love the tone of it.. normally, there's someone in your state that's like a retailer person or what not... but you can also order it online.... smile
@Lykaios of the Shadows... I have learned that flutter tonguing is usually done by like, i guess, rolling your r's into your flute... if you take spanish or italian you probably know how to do that, but i think some people can't do that so i would go with the double tonguing... the only reason I wouldn't recommend the raspberry kind of thing is because when i'm trying to reach the higher notes via harmonics, my lips end up buzzing together, and let me tell you, it doesn't sound like flutter, it sounds like a fart or a raspberry XD so yeah.. hope this helps smile
@piccolo players.. If anyone has heard of "An Irish Rhapsody," it's this awesome song that like is featured around the piccolo, which is exciting for me, because I'm the piccolo player in my band ^^, because the piccolo sounds like an irish fife. It's pretty cool cuz it's like all these sweet irish songs that all have some form of piccolo solo or another :3 and hardly ever are they shared with trumpets, normally flutes or clarinets (woot clarinets! my bestie plays that instrument)

I do know some people who have bought flute with pointed arms and such, but they're able to get that part out of the way so they don't have to worry about getting a better flute later on. As for me, my parents found a really good deal on my flute which is actually used, and it's a nice flute, so I'll be using that flute for the rest of my high school career. Afterwards, it'll depend on whether I can afford a flute with pointed arms and such or if I'll carry on music(which I probably will, but sometimes things change).

well, I think my solo was a pic solo, but I don't have a pic so they just brought it up an octave. It was pretty scary at first, but I got it :]
