Egg Count: 5/5
He still never found out who left the pokemon there or why. Or even how. His father suggested that the Oshawott had wandered his way out there and was lucky not to have been well… seriously injured. Like seriously injured. Like killed. It was a sort of squeamish thing to think about, though Lafayette didn’t squirm or feel ill from the thought. He’d see plenty of pokemon dying in terrible ways…. Most of them he’d caused one way or another. Something that serious should’ve made him feel guilty… but he didn’t.

They did manage to find an egg, resting underneath one of those cafe table umbrellas. Immediately after, they were rushing back to Tropius to go ahead and set out for the last area in Unova. They were able to get through two regions already, or they would once they found this last egg, that was pretty impressive.

If they’d had more time, Lysander truly believed they would’ve actually been able to complete this damn hunt. It was annoying--as if he didn’t already know, and hadn’t mentally complained about this--but, again, there was nothing he could do about it. Honestly, he needed to stop thinking about how far they could have gotten and focus on actually finding as many eggs as they could.

Striaton City was a little smaller than Castelia, which either meant they’d have an easier time finding an egg or a harder time. Easier because, less space meant less hiding spots to look for, harder because, those few spots had already been searched and swept clean. Lysander, obviously, was hoping for the former. But, with his luck, he wouldn’t be surprised if they had a much harder time finding an egg.

Because life was just like that sometimes, or most of the time. It depended on the person, and their attitude towards adversity, he supposed. Heather dealt with that much better than he did, and that proof was in how they’d handled that last gym battle. Heather had gotten upset, sure, but she’d recovered quickly, while Lysander had chosen to stew and get angry over the situation. Hell, Heather had been the one who’d knocked him out of his funk, with her weird ways.

Lysander really did appreciate his younger sister, though he didn’t say it often. He probably should’ve, but… he wasn’t good with being emotionally open. At least, not open with the softer emotions. He was more than capable of sharing his more negative emotions, absolutely. He’d work on that, maybe, just as… soon as he felt like it. Which wasn’t now. Nah, right now he had eggs to search for.

Finally. Snivy huffed a sigh of relief as they came to stop at a bench shortly after arriving in Striaton City. That walk had been far longer than he’d expected, and his little leaf feet were hurting him. He looked to his team mates who seemed more accustomed to traversing for such long periods of time. Well… maybe that was a stretch. Along the way, Ginger had melted back into the ground to piggyback on Reese’s shadow once more and Snivy had only caught glimpses of her since then. In the meantime, Colt was just floating through the air as was standard for his species and the Snivy could’ve sworn he’d gone back to sleep along the way. How he didn’t just… up and get blown away was anyone’s question.
The only one who seemed well… a bit tired from the excursion was his new trainer. Though it seemed more like a mix of tired and agitated as they took that time to rest. Having driven a young couple from the bench, he spread out to pretty much be laying on the bench, pulling the communicator from his pocket once more. The Snivy just plopped down on the sidewalk next to the bench, taking the time to massage his own feetsies.
Reese flipped through the map on the device. Striaton had plenty more opportunities compared to the small fry towns they’d been though and the agitation from the trek here from the lab was slowly subsiding in favor of anticipation. The place was a gold mine, well as much as a gold mine a first city could be. It didn’t take long before he had what he needed and was back on his feet, turning to the remnants of his visible team with a grin.

The salty stench of the sea filled the nostrils of our not-so-young hero as he strolled Striaton City with a smirk. "Stay close Rin, and be careful. " He stretched out his arm for his persimmon pokemon to climb on. "It's no Saffron City, but it's not tiny like Nuvema Town was either." Masura resumed his perch on the man's shoulder. "If I was a little stronger, I'd let you ride on my other shoulder, but for now you'll have to be content with walking beside me. The change they had collected aggressively jangled in the pockets of the track pants. "Masura, we're looking for a vending machine or a laundromat." The mouse squeaked in understanding, but the otter just looked at the duo bemused.
"You see Rin." Kenjiro began jingling his pockets. " While it's nice to have all of this change, it's also a burden to carry without a change-purse or a bag. " The otter just stared at him. "All this noise could attract some trouble. " Kenjro let out a short cough. "Plus it'll start to chafe if I carry for it too long." Kenjro rubbed his head a bit. " I forget you haven't been with us very long... He looked down at the otter as they walked. "Life hasn't been the greatest for us, but we learned how to survive without much. "
The persimmon mouse began pulling at Kenjiro's shirt. " Looks like we got a hit. Whatcha got?" The mouse skittered around and pointed to a small building. "Alright gang, let's go get rid of some of this coin burnin' a hole in our pockets." Kenjiro pat Masura on the head, and looked down at Rin. " Lesson Twelve Rin, while clothes sometimes make the man, nothing feels better than clean clothes right out of the dryer. " The old man smiled looking back at the blue otter. " Stick with us kid, and we'll go far. "

"Laundry day." Kenjiro laughed and smiled insincerely as he continued to explain away the glances that were shot his direction. His comment was met with little success as most people just continued to stare, as he shambled around looking to a machine currently not in use. "Seems the awkwardness of laundromats are something universal. "
He dumped the load of dirty clothes into the free machine and sat his pokemon onto a nearby unoccupied folding table. "Next lesson Rin, a drop of honey nets more than a pinch of salt." He glanced around until he spotted a woman who looked a bit older than him. " Excuse me, I'm in town on business, but my wife forgot to pack some detergent. I have a very important meeting tomorrow, mind if I borrow a bit?" The woman gave a warm smile and poured a cap full and handed it to him. "I don't mind at all. " Kenjiro reciprocated the smile and started his laundry, winking at his pokemon.
Kenjiro took a seat on the folding table with his deposited mon and waited. The woman whom he borrowed from approached him. "Do you have any children, you and your wife?" The man's expression soured. Excuse me? How about you mind your own #%*ing business you old hag!" Kenjiro scoffed. "Just trying to do some laundry and some folks people just want to come up and discuss anything under the sun. The nerve!" The woman's expression went blank, and a few other patrons stared. "Anyone else feel like shooting the breeze?!" The laundromat fell silent and the patrons averted their eyes.
Kenjro glanced at his the Oshawott who glanced at him incredulously. "It's better this way." He whispered. "Better this, than her chatting our ears off all day. " The laundromat remained silent as Kenjiro proceeded to dry, iron and press his business-like attire before changing into it, in a public bathroom. "Now let's go get some grub." The crisp-looking man said patting his mon before leaving the laundromat.

"You have no idea how good this feels." Kenjiro said to his companions. " I don't smell, my clothes are clean, I have a little money in my pocket. I'm far away from anyone from my old life. I feel twenty years younger. " The man stretched his arms out. "And I have no idea what to do now." Masura squeaked in complaint, looking at Kenjiro with sad hungry eyes. "Right, I almost forgot." He pulled at his saggy clothes. "We'll need a regular eating schedule if we're going to have the strength to stay on this journey. "
"I dare you to spend the night at the Dreamyard." A passing teenager teased his friend. "No way, that's place's haunted!" His friend whined. "Plus that building's dilapidated and condemned, no one in their right mind would spend the night there!" Kenjiro rubbed his chin and murmured. "No one in their right mind, huh?"
After a bit of scouting the trio managed to found a few vending machines out of public view. Kenjiro hummed at the coins clanked into the machine. The machine whirred to life and then stopped. " These machines sometimes jam Rin, but usually a second item will free the first. " A few more clinks of change and the machine whirred to life again. " A bit of bad luck, but third times the charm. No need to attract unnecessary attention. " The increasingly impatient man ploinked a few more coins in. Once more the machine whirred to life, followed by nothing. "Forsaken piece of junk!" Kenjiro cursed as he began to shake the machine.
"That's it!" Kenjiro cried out. "Masura, show this machine how we do business." The Persimmon Pokemon leapt from his shoulders and shot out a short beam of power. Sparks flew as the machine lit up and began whirring aggressively. "Masura! I just meant tackle it or something! " Kejiro called out muffled by the machine increasing in volume. Suddenly there was a loud pop of hot metal, and a sound crashing of several items falling into the machine's dispensary. "So much for subtlety! " Kenjiro barked as he made room in his pockets by handing its contents to his pokemon. "Here hold these and follow me! We need to beat it before we get into trouble!" With a small menagerie of junk food in hand the trio fled.

They were off the bench and walking through the city, with Snivy no more clear on what this supposed ‘job’ business was. Ginger and Colt seemed to know what was up but didn’t seem interested in filling him in. It just left nothing but confusion, something the starter didn’t really enjoy. Eventually they slowed and then came to a stop, grin on Reese’s face as he eyed the local pokemart.
"Perfect." He commented to himself, though the grass snake gave him a look. Perfect what? Reese didn’t acknowledge him, instead taking a look around and moving from the side walk off into the greenery to a more concealed area. "Here," He remarked again and just for safe measure, tugged out his army knife to swiftly carve an X into the base of the tree. The Snivy stared at this act in further confusion; Colt just stifled a yawn and Ginger giggled as she took form next to the grass snake from the shadows once more. Once he was confident in his act, the young man flipped the blade back into place and tucked it away in his pocket as he turned to face his team with a grin.
"We’ll meet back here, ya go it?" He remarked, earning nods from two-thirds of the crew while one continued to boggle in wonder what was going on. Reese focused on the starter this time with a bit of a menacing frown appearing as he pointed the snake out.
"Alright listen here, big head. You’re gonna do exactly what Ginger and Colt tell ya exactly to do, you follow? You don’t and you’ll probably ******** this all up. You don’t want to do that." The Snivy felt a chill run down his spine and a lump forming in his throat at the end threat. Uhm… well okay then? He didn’t follow at all and the continued snickers and giggles from Ginger in response didn’t ease him at all. With that out of the way, Reese turned his attention to the Gengar. "Ginger, you got what you need?" Her grin bloomed and head (or body rather?) proceeded to rapidly nod up and down. "Good, you know what to do then. You," Snivy jumped as he was addressed once more, snapping attention back to his trainer. "Pay attention and take some notes. Because if you can’t keep up you’re out of this group."
There were a lot of demands being made at this point and the Snivy might’ve started sweating bullets if that were a thing for him. Instead, he just nodded his head solemnly in understanding, earning a sharp stare for a long few seconds before Reese seemed to consider the response acceptable. ”Good. Let’s go then.” Ginger gave one last snicker before fading back into the shadows, Colt floating up and taking up camp in the hood of his trainer’s fur lined coat. Which left Snivy as the only visible pokemon, quickly shuffling after the young man as they left the marked meet up spot and headed into the store.

Reese really didn’t have to try too hard to get attention. His appearance alone as he entered through the door was enough to earn some less than certain looks and with a little bit of questionable body language, he knew he had a few patrons and clerks alike believing he was up to no good. He headed for the back area of the store, scanning the place until he spotted a door to the back, smirking a little.
Perfect. He turned and took up space at the farthest back shelf he could that was actually stocked with items, beginning to look like he was trying to browse with the suspicious look around. He was just visible enough that the clerks could see him, but just enough cover that his pokemon would go unnoticed. Which was exactly what he wanted. He tugged at the collar of his jacket and Colt fluffed up before slipping down the back of the jacket and to the ground, right next to a surprised Snivy. There wasn’t time to ask what was going on as the Whimsicott ushered with an arm to follow, the shadow underneath them both giggling as it snaked it’s way to the door.
Once it was clear no one had seen them, Ginger reappeared, a wide grin on her face. Snivy was just nervous again; he still had no idea what they were doing or what he was supposed to be noting and stuff, but he couldn’t help but feel nervous about the situation. Colt just gave him a look, poking him and nearly causing the snake to jump out of his leaves. "Keep a look out; if anyone’s coming, hide." The Whimsicott responded, clearly unphased by their new teammates nerves before floating up towards the doors lock. "Wha?"
"You heard him! Keep watch big head!" Ginger chimed, giggling against the Snivy whipped around so hard he might’ve had whiplash. The confusion was replaced with anger and he bristled up.
"My head’s not that big!" He spat back only to be greeted with another giggle. "Sure, sure!" The Gengar hopped from one foot to the other as she continued, "Big head!" The Snivy was about to snap again but the sound of a click behind caused the pair to turn and look at the Whimsicott who had returned from… the keyhole?
"C’mon, hurry up and get inside before someone sees you," Colt interrupted, pointing up to the know. ”Use ya vines to open the door will ya?” This command/request was met with a bit of a befuddled look, which caused the Whimsicott to get snappy. ”Now?’
"Oh uh…," He did as was requested, turning the knob and allowing the Whimsicott to push it open just enough for them to squeeze inside.

The trio slipped inside and shut the door behind them with little conflict. Colt rubbed his face briefly giving the Snivy a side look. "Normally I don’t have to break the lock if Ree ain’ coming. You’re kind of a hassle, you know?" The Snivy bristled again, but kept his mouth shut at this point. It was clear trying to get argumentative would earn him no points. Instead, he took to studying their new surroundings; the place was some sort of… storage area? There were shelves stocked with boxes for days, from pokeballs to potion bottles; clearly this was where the spare stock was kept for the front end of the store.
The Snivy took a glance back to the other two who had already started rummaging through the open cases. "What are we doing anyways?"
"Getting stuff! " Ginger piped up, taking a canvas bag from Colt as he pulled it free from his fluff. What was that some kind of… storage space or something? "Stuff?" The Snivy asked, staring at the two as they set to work digging through the boxes, Ginger going for those on the bottom.
"Yeh! Free stuff! C’mon! You can help with that much big head!" The Gengar pointed to another set of boxes nearby that the grass snake could search. "Stop cal- nevermind," The Snivy sighed and turned his attention to the boxes Ginger had directed him too. He started digging about but wasn’t entirely sure what was preferred; no one exactly had directed him on what they should be taking in the first place. Just that they should be doing so.
After a few minutes of uncertain digging and setting aside multiple items that maybe were worth it, "Why are we taking this stuff?" He decided to ask finally, glancing the pair as they were shoving things away in the bag.
"’Cause Ree said so! We gotta get some stuff!" Ginger announced once more with a giggle. The grass snake frowned. "Should we really be doing this though…?"
"You ask a lot of questions," Colt interrupted as he shoveled some things from a higher shelf down for Ginger to catch and tuck in the bag. "You should stop." At this point, the starter snapped his mouth shut and narrowed a disapproving gaze. Why was everyone so… unfriendly? He didn’t know what was going down, what was the problem in asking a question or two to figure out? The silence loomed, with nothing but the sound of items shuffling and bouncing about as they moved.
"Okay, that should be good," Colt finally spoke up after ten minutes of gathering, shoving one last item in the bag. Ginger grinned excitedly, tugging the handles and tying them together while the cotton fluff floated up and through the room. Snivy watching curiously as he did, trying to discern what he was up too. They certainly couldn’t go back through the door they’d come through with this haul; someone would certainly notice. And he didn’t see any immediate way out. So…
"How are we going to get this out of here?"
"Like this," The Whimsicott perched on a nearby shelf, gesturing to a vent grate. Once more he set about loosening the thing with a skill that the Snivy couldn’t begin to understand before addressing them again. "Lift the bag up, Ginger will take it the rest of the way,"
"Uh… okay," The Snivy commented, glancing at Ginger as she giggled and disappeared into the shadows to appear right next to Colt and the opened grate. Using his vines once again, grunting at the weight of the bag but managing to lift it to the top of the shelf. The Gengar immediately snatched it once it was in grasping range, giggling again. "Got it! Nice job big head!" Her grin grew and she seemed to flash him a thumbs up. "Maybe you ain’ so bad!"

While his pokemon did the dirty work, Reese was diligently playing his part as the delinquent distraction. It wasn’t all too difficult; being a delinquent was well… easy. You didn’t have to go to far to fulfill the stereotype and Reese knew by nature just what he needed to do to keep the staff focusing on him and not questioning anything else. A shifty look here, suspicious clothes rustling there, and he had all eyes on him.
People were just that predictable; something he’d learned over time with close observation. He rounded the corner of one of the last shelves again, catching sight as Snivy and Colt slipped back through the door. He withheld the grin that threatened to spread across his face at the sight, instead swiftly turning on his heels to put his back to the two. Snivy gave a confused tired look at the act, but Colt didn’t hesitate, quickly slipping up the back of their trainer’s coat and hiding out in his hood once more. This left only the grass snake out.
Perfect.
Reese gave a little head jerk at the snake to stick close at this point, strolling his way back up to the front of the store again. He didn’t need to confirm that his team had been successful; the lack of Ginger sighting had him confident that things had gone far smoother than even he had anticipated. He paused taking the time to snatch a magazine off the rack; some flimsy garbage about… contests? He started to flip through it nonchalantly, still aware of the eyes on him. Finally, one of the store clerks worked up the courage it seemed and approached him.
”Excuse me but, if you aren’t going to be buying anything you’ll need to leave.” Reese looked up from his faux reading of the magazine, making a disgusted face. "Oh yeah? You tell the other loitering tools around here that?" He responded with a bit of a snarl; the clerk didn’t seem all that tough, but he wasn’t looking to start throwing punches. The clerk frowned, shuffling in place a moment before folding his arms over his chest. He wasn’t some stick either so, there was probably a good reason he’d been sent over to comment.
"Whatever," He remarked, rolling his eyes and crumpling the magazine in one hand. The punk marched up to the counter, shoving his way in front of some younger trainers who were browsing the pokeball selections before digging around in his pocket and producing whatever small change he had available and slammed it down on the counter. "There assholes. Happy?" He remarked tone loud so that all could hear before scoffing and turning for the door, head jerking to the Snivy. "Screw this place, let’s go."

With his one legal (or barely legal, he had no clue if he left enough to pay for the magazine, but who really cared) purchase and his starter in tow, Reese left the building and its denizens with a less than favorable impression. Which was just fine; it was more of a cover than anything. If they tried to blame him, he had the power to point out that he was visible the entire time and those liars could shove it where the sun didn’t shine for their ‘stereotyping’. Not that they were wrong but, that wasn’t the point.
He and Snivy made their way back to the tree he’d marked earlier, where Ginger and the bag of loot was waiting. The Gengar turned to her trainer with a wide grin, dancing excitedly in place around the bag as the punk dropped down. "Hey, hey, hey….," Reese commented, beginning to dig his way through the bag, a grin slowly spreading over his face. The haul was far more impressive than he was expecting and even the Snivy noted that he seemed rather proud in the moment. Which… was a good thing? Was it?
"Not too bad, not bad at all," His gaze flipped from Ginger and Colt (who had taken the time to remove himself from his hiding spot to check that everything was still there) to the Snivy. "I take it you weren’t a problem then. Good. I don’t have time to take you back to the professor." The Snivy blinked and shuffled in place over that. Was that a compliment? A promise? Something? He took a quick look to the other two pokemon who seemed to… mostly approve their trainer’s assessment. Well. That was reassuring?
Reese didn’t pay much attention to the concern or confusion from the Snivy, instead working to piece through the goods and place them into his own bag.
