Surprised Alec was having trouble, Lip took a seat next to him.. "Yeah, agree to disagree. Now let's see here... I'll have to teach you some tricks around your disability sometime.. Though yours must be worse than mine..." He gently took the pamphlet, "Okay, can you write? I'll read this to you... if I need to write for you let me know." He mentioned as he started reading the pamphlet to Alec

Lillian set out on her way to scavenge as best as she could for food. She started first with water, stopping to boil it over a small fire she constructed. She took the time to slowly make a snare she would check on later. Afterwards, she pondered over the water for a while, before make-shifting a fishing pole to catch a fish as well. Next, she came across some wild garlic, stopping to pick that up as well. Her last catch was the biggest, a rabbit caught with the snare made earlier.

She could skin a fish. She had in the past for her father. A rabbit was a bigger challenge. She wasn't quite sure how to not mangle the poor things corpse, so she took that in whole with her with all the other items in her bag, ready to show their instructor.

Alec had a moment of wanting to bolt but when he sat down, and kept talking to him he visibly relaxed frowning reluctantly. "Not really, my handwriting is pretty bad too..are you sure you don't mind helping?" He didn't need to include the you don't have too. Obviously he didn't have too.

"My names about the best I've got down. I didn't try applying myself with writing.." He usually frustrated his teachers, but as soon as Lip started reading he was quite, his listening skills what he excelled most at. All of the information seemed like common sense. "Thanks by the way." He added once he was done, leaning in squinting at the thing he was reading. Alec's opinion of the guy had changed, he wasn't half as bad as he'd believed initially.

Phillip nodded to him, then read out the questions and wrote out the answers in Alec's words. After finishing writing the quiz for him, he handed the pamphlet back to Alec and actually smiled. "Here you are... Now go get scavenging..." He told the other then standing and stretching, "See you around Alec..." Waves and heads off.

Alec made sure not to ramble, and keep his answers concise and too the point. He might not have had great writing and reading skills, but he did know how to pay attention. Watching Lip write after he spoke, he took the pamphlet, clumsily signing his name at the top before moving over to Erevette to hand it in smiling tenatively at the woman.

Once it was in he was off to go scavange, pausing to shadow his eyes against the days sun. "Later Lip...thanks again man." He replied waving .

Preacher begrudgingly swung down from the tree she had holed herself up in. She grabbed a pamphlet and was immensely grateful she could read. Luckily, it looked as though Alec was getting the help he needed. She rubbed her eyes.

Like a flash, Preacher threw herself into scavenging. It was an easy way to not think about anything in particular. She flew around the forest, but was honestly a little lost. Scavenging in the city was nothing like in the wilderness. There were no bakers to steal from, no refuse to dig through. Preacher deflated a bit. Suddenly, she remember how her and a couple of the littles had run snares on the roof of Tinker's lean-to in an attempt to catch squirrels. It had worked, for a bit, until Tinker decided he didn't want snares up there anymore.

Her fingers moved deftly, setting up a snare for any smallish animal. She wasn't entirely sure what animals lived in the woods, in any event. She slapped her hands against her thighs and began to poke around in the underbrush. Flowers, flowers, uh, something long and green, and mushrooms. Good enough. Preacher had a sneaking suspicion that the mushrooms might be poisonous, given their alarming color, but it would be good to get confirmation.

Preacher's trap was also successful, and she efficiently wrung te neck of the rabbit and carted it along as well.

Turning in my completed quiz!
Character name: Alister Hayes
Link to quiz:

Alister's eye were bright as he listened fervently to every word that dripped from Everette's lips. He read the pamphlet quickly and thoroughly. After careful deliberation on each and every answer, he handed in his quiz. His script was flowing and elegant, penmanship easy to read. Alister had had professional schooling and it showed.

1. What is the most important thing to do if you find yourself stuck in a snowstorm?
When stuck in a snowstorm, the first thing would be to look about for shelter. If none is to be found, build one. This is easiest if you are close to the walls, as they provide a sheltering grace under their shadow. You must also take care to capture the heat rising from your head with a woolen hat.
2. What is one thing you should do when you find yourself in a lightning storm? Why do you think that is?
In a fierce storm, it is best to take shelter near but not touching tall things. You must not be the tallest thing in the are or lightning will become drawn to you.
3. Should you keep your head covered in hot weather? Why, or why not?
The pamphlet says to keep my head covered, so I must.
4. In hot weather, when is the best time to travel? Why?
To travel at night under the cool cover of starlight is best. Or, if you must travel in the light, do not travel during midday.
5. If a lightning strike is imminent, what should you do?
Breathe not; the air become superheated when lightning strikes. If you can, stay completely still and minimize your contact with the ground.

With a brilliant smile, Alister handed the quiz to Everette.

Alister took off at full tilt. How hard could it be to scavenge? Stumbling on a tree root, he discovered some small mushrooms and bundled them up in his jacket. Stephen had once made a mushroom souffle that brought tears to Alister's eyes. In fact, he sniffed a little now as a wave of strange homesickness washed over him. No, there was no time for this! He plowed forward, gathering purple berries and purple flowers and somethign that could've been a potato. One of the flowers was slid behind his ear.

As he walked, he hummed a cheery Wallist hymn. Well, it was as cheery as such hymns got - they tended to be a more serious type of uplifting, rather than spritely. Ah, wouldn't he need water as well? Alister stopped dead, remembering that once he had read that a human body would die in mere days without water. A puddle! He swung his bucket down into it, filling it with deep, slightly muddy water. Surely the human body could process it.

"Instructor Everette~! Will I survive?" He brandished his findings to the woman. "You should wear a flower as well - it would like lovely in your hair." Smiling, he reached out one hand. A single violet blossom lay against his dark palm.

"All right trainee, lets see what you've got." Ervette paused and glanced over what Lenore had discovered.

"This is all excellent, except for these red berries. You don't want to eat these. They're pretty poisonous, and can kill you. Dandelions, while bitter, are a source of food - as are these mushrooms, and these violets."

Ervette grinned.

"Nicely done."

Farvardin's scavenging brought a proud smile to Ervette's face.

"Trainee. Everything here is exactly what you should be looking for. Fish, excellent. Garlic and onion, also excellent. Water - which you've boiled and made drinkable. I'm really quite impressed, trainee. Nicely done."

She paused.

"Make sure to share your knowledge with your fellow trainees. We've all got to look out after one another, after all."

Larisa's finds were given a general nod of approval, though Ervette paused to point a few things out.

"These berries are not edible. They're actually rather poisonous, so be sure to avoid them in the future. These flowers can, in fact, be eaten. And these," the instructor gestured at the potatoes, "are a good source of food. Potatoes aren't the best kind of energy, but paired with a fish or a rabbit, you've got a good meal on your hands."

Ervette, upon seeing Axel's scavenged goods, gave him kind of a crooked sort of smile. He would absolutely die on his own. The potato he'd gotten and the mushrooms he'd found weren't really anything worth bragging about.

"The berries are poison, trainee. The water is dirty. There are ways to clean it; boiling it or filtering it, to name a few. You probably won't die from drinking dirty water, but these berries will absolutely kill you. The potato is good, and the mushrooms, too. Both good finds. I've told Rennati how to filter water. Feel free to ask her to show you what I've given her."

Thalea

Ervette drew Hazel in close, and procured a knife. It was a big, sharp, wicked looking thing, and the instructor wielded it gracefully.

"Taking scales off of a fish is a simple enough task, Hazel. You've got to have a knife. If you don't have one, I can try and find one for you to look after. I like to cut the head off first," she did so quickly, "and then gut it," Ervette made a long incision on the underbelly of the fish, and quickly removed the entrails.

"The scales are the easy part. You just run your knife kind of like this," she took the knife and ran it down the length of the fish from the tail to where the head once was. Scales flew off and caught on the edge of the knife.

"When you're done with that side, flip it, and do the same to the other side."

Ervette wiped the knife clean and then grasped the rabbit.

"You make cuts here," Ervette pointed at the spots just above the joints on the back legs of the rabbit. "Not too deep. Bring those cuts up like this," the knife moved seamlessly upwards, forming a Y-shape.

"Once that's done, you can peel the skin back, like so," Ervette applied a little elbow grease, and the skin slid free from the flesh of the rabbit. "It's sometimes easier if you can tie it up by the hind legs, but someone else can hold it for you if need be. I've done this many times, but don't be afraid to ask a fellow comrade for assistance."

She continued pulling the skin of the rabbit down, and swiftly beheaded the meaty beast.

"And now you've got a cleaned rabbit, good for charring over an open flame once you've gutted it."

Ervette looked over the scavenged goods with a crucial eye.

"Not bad, trainee. The water would need to be boiled or filtered. Rennati has a filter I made, if you'd like her to show it to you. The berries are poison - stay away from most anything red in the wild. The flowers are edible, and so are the mushrooms. Overall, nicely done, trainee."
