Wk 1. Hand-to-hand combat Wk 2. Horse riding Wk 3. Shelter & first aid Wk 4. Food & weather
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Practical class. Students train their dexterity, reflexes and hand-to-hand combat skills. Many don't really take this class seriously and it unravels at a leisurely pace unlike Phys Ed.
Riding
Practical class. Students learn how to take care of horses (grooming, cleaning stalls) as well as how to ride them.
First Aid
Theory and Practical class. Students learn to identify and issue emergency treatment for injuries from light to severe, ex.: ways to disinfect and bandage a wound, deal with someone who has become unconscious, perform clean amputations, stave off blood loss, make a splint... Practical evaluations don't use actual injured people. Students pair up and take turns pretending to be injured. They treat each other.
Survival Basics
Theory and Practical classes. Students are taught all of the essential survival skills for long expeditions or if they are lost: what to do in different weather conditions, obtaining safe drinking water, using the sun to orient oneself, finding and creating shelter, hunting, obtaining adequate nutrition in the wilderness...
They are field trips in remote locations where you can put the theory into practice.

August Survival Training
While Ervette was the training compounds survival basics instructor, she frequently would take off into the forest, or mountains that surrounded the area. Yet for her absence she always made up for it in her pleasant demeanor. Rain nor shine, there was never a better time to be able bodied and alive. After the morning meal, the green haired woman entered the mess hall; several minutes before the bell would have rang as per usual. Her wild green hair did nothing to hide the excitement, nor vigor in her step. Her appearance must have seemed a little strange, but she took no notice. Within the mess hall, she began calling out to the new trainees, looking for those whom were meant to spend the day with her as scheduled.
“Alright! Trainees, Listen up!” Her voice cut above the chatter, commanding their attention. “I want to see the following trainees on the Field pronto.” Ervette cleared her throat, and without fail began blasting off last names. She held no list in hand, as if she’d memorized them all. Even her pronunciation was spot on. With her roll call complete, she paused, making sure she'd caught the twenty new faces attentions respectively.
“Instead of morning class, you’ll be training with a partner of my choosing with your Hand to Hand combat skills! Exciting right?” She sounded confident, even chuckling a little. “I just want to see some basic moves demonstrated, each of you will practice your skills on one another." With that, she stood at attention, saluting smartly and departing from the doors she'd so boldly marched in, presumably to the field.
As those trainees whom had been called out approached the training field, Ervette began pointing, calling out their last names, and assigning them at random to work with one another. She stands back, waiting for the last few stragglers to catch up. A quick head count, meant she could begin her demonstration. Showing them proper fighting stance poses to start, she moved herself into a strong fist strike. For several minutes, she also explained the proper method to grapple, and to avoid running from punches. The woman's demo ended on a high note, about proper breathing, and paying special attention to address the fact not everyone necessarily was as good as the other.
"I want to stress to everyone, I know a lot of you might have zero experience. If you do not feel comfortable, stick around we'll get you up to speed. Once you are done with your initial partner, you may choose to pair up with another. Regardless, after you are done and satisfied with your practice, I will be around if you wish for additional sparring lessons. Otherwise you are free to go. We'll be spending the next month together, so get comfy," she concluded, leaning against the fence just behind her before making a motion for everyone to begin.
Now entering Survival, Week One: Hand-to-Hand Combat
Your Assignment:
• You will be paired off (refer to the list below) you are to interact with your partner in a way that demonstrates your hand to hand combat skills.
• You must interact at least 2 or more times, using 100 words or more per reply. Keep in mind you have a week, and will be demonstrating your combat reflexes.
• After the initial demonstration, Ervette is content to let you do as your please. She isn’t extremely serious, and happens to be a rather laid back instructor you discover. If you wish for one on one training with your instructor you may quote me for an in character response of her taking up sparring with you.
• If your partner goes missing (i.e. does not post for a long period of time without notifying you) or becomes inactive and you have not yet full-filled the prompt: you may either message me privately for further instruction or, alternatively use the NPC/myself as your sparring partner for your interaction requirements for the week!
• If you have any questions, or concerns, please feel free to PM me!
You have until August 7th 11:59PM PST to respond to this prompt.

"Don't get your a** kicked. I'll do that for you later." The smack talk began between two boys with the same face! Patting his brother on the back, Jeong-jae turned to look around for whoever this Hazel Snow was. He'd been hoping to take on one of the other guys to test his strength but he'd do that later. Narrowing down the choices as everyone paired off accordingly, he was shocked to find himself facing an incredibly skinny girl.
"You Hazel?" Hoping maybe it wasn't the case, Jeong-jae asked the girl's identity. How the heck was he gonna train with this girl who looked so fragile? Even if she did turn out to be a secret master of pain, he was afraid that any force from him would snap her in two! Underestimating the blonde due to her appearance, Jeong-jae awkwardly assumed the fighting stance Ervette had just shown them. While he could technically just mess around when Ervette turned her back, he did kind of want to learn how to fight too. Hwan-jae and him didn't go around trying to start brawls but had found themselves in a few fights back home and it'd taught him that he needed to be better prepared. Jeong-jae wanted to be able to kick a** for real, not barely make it out of the fight!
"Ready? Let's go!" Once Hazel appeared aware of his intentions, Jeong-jae moved forward to execute a strong fist strike, copying what Ervette had shown them once again. His movement was sharp and quick but he held back on his power, still afraid to hurt the girl he didn't know very well.
((I hope it's okay I had him notice she's pretty skinny (after reading her journal). If not let me know and I'll edit! Btw I'm going to be on semi-hiatus from 8/1 to 8/5. I will try to post back when I can because I don't want to screw you up for the posting requirements but I understand if you ditch me for another partner after a few interactions. I'll try to prioritize replies in here the most while I'm with limited posting time.))

"Yeah, right, you'll be busy with my boot shoving your face in the dirt." Hwan-jae responded to his brother with a snort and he flapped his hand in a nonchalant wave as he left to search for his partner. He couldn't have been more pleased that he'd gotten into a combat class as it would burn off a lot of the energy he never seemed to stop producing while also helping him grow stronger. He'd seen his share of short-tempered fights and while he'd held his own enough to survive, the boy knew he was far from competent against some of the dangers out there.
"Alister Hayes?" Wow, one look at the taller boy and he was stunned. The guy was a giant and yet there seemed to be something incredibly feminine about him. It was probably, no definitely, the long soft strands of purple framing his face and he seemed a little starstruck for a moment. Ugh, what was he thinking? This was hand-to-hand class! Time to throw some punches around. He hoped Alister was up for a good fight!
"Nice to meet you. I'm Hwan-jae." With a grin he hopped into the fighting stance he'd just learned from Ervette and tried to combine it with the breathing exercise from the end of the lesson. It seemed harder to do now that he was focusing so much on his lungs but he would give it a try. Giving Alister a moment to ready himself, Hwan launched forward to try and grab the other guy to restrict his movements. Punching sounded fun but he doubted the purple boy had been expecting to grapple right away and hoped he could take his opponent by surprise!
((Feel free to have Hwan miss or hit as you like/need, I just wanted to get some action going. I look forward to a good, and hopefully somewhat crazy, fight! Like Dou said, we're going on a semi-hiatus 8/1 - 8/5 but I will try to post in here as I can to make sure we meet the posting requirements. Will prioritize this so I don't screw you over.))

Alister was, in fact, day-dreaming, of a sorts. The tall man was thinking that if his friend Stephen were here, Stephen would know exactly how to fight. Those stances and punches seemed... awkward. Alister was a peaceful, placid kind of guy. He was absolutely sure that he could and would kill titans to protect the people moist dear to him, but people? He didn't think he'd be fighting people. What was the pointy? What if he made someone bleed?
Still, he partnered up obediently. He took one look at his opponent, then another, and another? "J-jeong-jae?" But he'd said he was Hwan? Did doppelgangers exist? The ideas of ghosts being truly real sent a shiver down his spine. His family had always said Alister was too fanciful for his own good, but still... He had never met two people so similar. "Witchcraft," he murmured in awe. Unfortunately, he was so preoccupied that he never saw Hwan's rush forward until it hit.
With a yelp of surprise, Alister went down, down, down. Although he had several inches on the other boy, they were of no use to him as they rolled in the dirt. For seconds, Alister simply flailed helplessly, arms and legs waving like an over-turned beetle. He stiffened, then curved his limbs around the other boy. If he couldn't get Hwan off, he would try something else. Alister rolled, his thin body easily rocking just enough to get him on top. What would Stephen do? No holds barred... Alister swallowed, and swung his fist right at Hwan's jaw before trying to dance up and away. It probably would've helped if Alister had been born a more graceful man.

Zinnia had been chatting with her two good friends, Walt and Colin, when Ervette unexpectedly walked into the mess hall and commanded their attention. She fell silent respectfully and listened to the names being called, but she jumped when she recognized her own. She waited desperately to hear a Walt Wood an Colin Young, but it never came. Her eyes flashed back to the pair, but they only shrugged and smiled sympathetically.
The blue-haired girl returned her attention to Ervette, who was now saying that they had to go to the field to practice hand-to-hand combat. Zin had known that this day was coming; she'd just thought that she would have been battling her best friends when it did. She knew that they would have gone easy on her; would her unknown battle partner be as kind? She'd never been in a real fist fight before.
She parted with Colin and Walt with a mournful farewell, and walked nervously but resolutely to the training field.
When she heard the the names "Hayes and Scott!" being called, she sighed in relief. Scott meant Alec Scott. She didn't know him well, but he seemed like a nice guy and he wasn't a whole lot bigger than herself so she was pretty sure it would be a somewhat fair battle. That is, unless he had a lot more experience than she did. And she didn't have any more experience than what she'd got from fighting Walt over pieces of bread.
Zin approached the red-haired boy nervously. "Hi..." she said, nervously getting into the stance that Ervette had shown them.

So now it was time for survival training to kick off. Shun listened as the instructor listed them off. It seemed that they were to start with hand to hand combat. That was fine with him. While he wouldn't be punching any titans in the face or anything like that, he figured it could help hone his reflexes and the like. While he was pretty familiar with this sort of thing already, he didn't see it as an opportunity to slack off. No, he still needed to work hard.
He turned towards the boy he was to be paired with, not recognizing the guy. The young man rolled his shoulders, then nodded curtly once in acknowledgement and as a sort of greeting. For now, he didn't really feel much of a need to introduce himself.
Instead, he gave a light bow, then shifted into a fighting stance. His knees were slightly bent and he kept on the balls of his feet while bringing his arms up before his chest.

Shakuntala scantly had a chance to down whatever food she had on her plate before she -- and a number of others -- were unwilling volunteered to partake in hand-to-hand combat. She stood with slight unease as Evrette explained herself; the trainee's thumbs twiddling idly from the back of the group as the green-haired woman flourished in a display of very impressive stances. It made her wonder how anyone could ever avoid -- let alone strike -- pain into the bodies of under such graceful arcs of the body, but her wonder would have to be left to another time and place. Apparently, it was the whole lot's turn to practice.
Threading onto the field with heavy legs, the girl sought out her training partner as she also dreaded the fact she had to hurt someone. The only person in her whole life she had ever risen a hand against was her cousin, Neil, and this was just last week for his nasty remarks on her choices in life. While her heart swelled with pride come her leaving from that tumultuous moment, guilt plagued her after she returned to the campgrounds. It was hard for her to function day after day at in the horse stables without her blanking out. Shakuntala wanted dearly to apologize, but like her mother, she knew if she bowed her head in apology, he would just return to his old ways.
Finally locating Rose (after much deliberation, at least), Shakuntala thinned her lips in a small smile. She didn't know what to make of the male; her opinion veiled under concern of even causing any bodily harm to them. Instead, she raised a hand in greeting, and said, "H-hello, I'm... I-I'm Shakuntala..." Well, at least introductions were out of the way. "Y-you can, um, you can t-take the first punch... If you want? I'll try to defend..."

Rennati had been sitting rather silently in the mess hall eating the last few bits that were on her plate when a woman walked into the hall with purpose. Her voice held everyone's attention and started calling out names for survival training. Eyes growing wide as her own name was called Ren couldn't help but wonder what in the world she had gotten herself into. Survival training, hand to hand combat. How would she ever hit someone, let alone avoid someone hitting her?? Nodding meekly, she followed the group outside into the field.
Not long after, Evrette started calling out pairs. She waited for her name to be called, she was paired with an Axel Halle? Ren had no idea who that was and with a few confused looks around, the teacher pointed to a blonde. Approaching him carefully as to not trip, she smiled shyly at him. "Axel Halle? I'm Rennati Ayala...I guess we'll be partners..." She almost wanted to apologize to him for being paired with the big klutz.

Axel didn't recall the blond girl's name, but he recognized her on sight. She was one of the newer trainees, one that had been assigned to his dorm. With a sinking feeling, Axel squared off in front of her. His time in the military had not had much of an effect on his reluctance to fight with girls. At least Rennati was a taller girl, and close to his own age.
"Yeah, partners." Axel gave Rennati a lopsided smile. "We're both in Falke too, I think."
It was too bad this was his first time really talking to Rennati. They would fight, and something disastrous would happen, and then Rennati would hate him. That was just the way his life went lately.
Well, there was nothing to be done about it. The instructor had paired them up, and fight they would. He frowned, trying to get his game face on. When fighting girls, it helped to think that he was somehow helping them instead of trying to hurt them. Like, what if Rennati ran into a man about Axel's size? A nasty man, one who wanted to take advantage of her. It would be good experience for her to fight Axel. Probably. He sighed, raising his hands, ready to defend himself. "D'you want to come at me first? I'll defend."
As she followed the other trainees out onto the field to begin, Larisa was a bundle of nerves. She'd never been in a fight in her life, so she knew she was probably going to have a harder time learning hand-to-hand than many of her peers would. Beyond that, there was the fact that though she'd been trying to work on making new friends, she still hadn't recognized most of the names that had been called. The odds that she'd be paired up with a complete stranger were pretty high and it seemed like such an awkward way to meet a person. She'd just...have to do her best and hope things worked out, that was all. She could handle this.
Still, it was hard not to squirm as the names were called, two by two, and a new fear came to light. What if she didn't end up paired with anyone at all? What if she'd been mistaken and her name hadn't even been called earlier? Oh no, how would she- Carter and Macbay rang out, finally, and Larisa let out the breath she'd been holding as she turned to see who she'd been paired with. She was tall, with long blonde hair tied back, and she looked so serious that Larisa hesitated one more time before moving forward, lips set in a nervous smile.
"I guess that means we're partners! I'm Larisa Macbay." She paused, realizing, and backtracked. "But you already knew the Macbay part, I guess, since she just said it, right? So, um, I'm Larisa and it's nice to meet you." She reached up to rub awkwardly at the back of her neck, then took a deep breath and settled into the fighting stance they'd been taught. "I've never really done this sort of thing before, so I'm, um, sorry in advance if I'm not very good. Were you wanting to go first, or should I try?"

Hand to hand combat… why couldn’t it be first ad training first? Before this day was done, Hazel knew that she would be black and blue with aches in places unaccustomed to strain. Soon everyone broke into their pairs; she searched the crowed for her partner. A young man with black hair was staring at her with his dark brown eyes. He was about three inches taller than her and definitely had more meat on his bones than she did. Yes, she would definitely end today black and blue. She nodded her head to him, letting him know that he found his sparring partner.
Hazel shifted into the battle stance that was just shown to them, it was an unfamiliar placement, but it gave her a larger base of support. There were places on his body in which she could attack and cause him pain; although she was not sure she possessed the strength to do serious damage. She was a healer, not an inflictor of pain, but this was a necessary lesson and one that she wished she knew while she was living with her mother and the drunken monster.
Distracted with her thoughts, she barely had time to shift her weight back to avoid a direct blow from Jeong-jae’s fist, it just grazed the young woman, it stung, but not as much as it should have. She has felt blows before, her partner was holding back. She squinted her eyes at him, “Why are you holding back?” Before he could answer, she returned his punch. It was pathetic, completely lacking power, but at least she gave it her all.
Okay, that was it. This weakness had to go. She would find a way to get in more practice; she would not be the weakest link in the cadets. She would become strong.

Another months classes were about to begin, with three dimensional maneuver gear out of the way it freed him up for survival training. This week seemed to be all about hand to hand combat. While he wasn't the most skilled of fighters, he had learned a thing or two since his last time sparring with Shun. He planned to keep in mind everything Ervette had said thus far, and apply it to practical use here today (hopefully).
Hayes, hadn't he heard Alister introduce himself with that name the other day in class? Alec looked thoughtful suddenly as he made glanced between the girl and the man several feet away sprawled out and trying to fend off some one who'd tackled him. Turning his full attention on Zinnia his eyes went slightly wide with recognition. So much time had passed since the events during the 100 Year of Peace festival, but forgetting some one like Zin was nearly impossible. She'd left an impression on him as surely as Lenore had. "Oh! Hey Zinnia, nice seeing you again!" He flashed her a warm smile waving in greeting.
Alec took a step back, equally as nervous but readying himself by rolling his shoulders. Moving into stance, nodding his head respectfully. "Shall we begin then..?" He didn't charge forward just yet, making sure his partner was ready. Instead of practicing defending, or throwing kicks and punches at each other, they'd chosen for a full blown sparring match. While he didn't want to hit a girl, Alec respected her as a trainee meaning he would engaged obediently as directed keeping in mind to pull all face blows...having been on the receiving end of shot to the face before.

Farvardin was one of the stragglers that the instructor waited for before starting. She was glad to be in the survival training even if she felt that she knew most of what would be taught. After all she survived days on end on her own in the wilderness. She must know something since she's still alive.
She heard her name called along with her partner's. She looked around for a moment before picking out a likely candidate for her partner since she didn't know who Mehtab Rose was. "Um... so I guess we're partners. You are Rose right? Uh... Mehtab Rose? I'm Farvardin Wyman." She asked waiting for him to verify he was indeed her partner.
She then took up a defensive pose and grinned at him. "Whenever you're ready!"

A special hand-to-hand class? Sparring was probably Preacher's favorite part of the day - it was something she was consistently good at. There was something exhilarating in the way bodies in combat moved; it was more elegant than dancing. It was somehow satisfying on the most visceral of levels to feel her fists connect, bruise flesh, strike bone. Of course, in training sessions, Preacher had learned to pull her punches, makes her kicks glance off of her partner instead of snapping her foot just so at the end of her leg's extension to deliver extra pain. Here, it was no longer a life or death situation and she could simply enjoy the adrenaline that coursed through her.
Listening with only half an ear to the instructor's parting words, instead Preacher studied the girl in front of her. Her bright eyes scanned Hilda with an uncomfortable intensity. She had perhaps an inch on Preacher's own height, but even an extra inch in reach could be a deadly advantage. Despite her overly serious expression, the blond-haired girl looked weaker, unused to fighting. Preacher's mouth twisted. Disheartening. She longed for a good, long spar against someone just as experienced as she. Although... there was some sort of competitive glint in those aqua eyes that spoke of promise.
""Lo. I'm Preacher. And ya name?" Preacher grinned crookedly and stuck her hand out in greeting. As soon as she saw those light blue eyes shift, that pale hand move forward to take hers, Preacher spun. She kicked her leg high, feeling the straps pinch sand tighten around her thigh. Her booted foot caught the other girl in her shoulder, hard enough to stagger her slightly. Not nearly as forceful as Preacher could of made it. She was lucky, surprise was on her side, though she would always wonder why people tended to fall for it so easily. There was a fundamental difference between people like Hilda and people like Preacher, that was the real answer, but she hoped for a good fight anyway.
She dropped into an easy crouch, giving Hilda a few seconds of respite. "C'mon, pretty girl. Gimme yer best fight." Her grin remained fixed in place, although those yellow eyes seemed to glow with an almost feral light. Preacher sprung forward; her fist feinted left, whooshing just past the girl's head. At the same time, her other hand reached out to grab a handful of Hilda's shining hair.
