oppo_pirka_zefie have any of you ever heard of a bass flute? it's like a regular flute, only longer and with a U-shaped mouthpiece. my band director told me about them, and now i wanna play one! Brass? I've never heard of a flute made out of brass... Flutes are usually made of Nickel (which most student flutes are made of), silver, gold, platinum, or a wood called grentella. The U-Shaped head joints on normal flutes are usually for smaller children just learning to play and can't reach. The U-shape head joints are very often found on Alto flutes (which what your band director was probably talking about) and Bass flutes. (There's even a CONTRABASS flute. Google it, you'll be surprised.)

I've played on a contrabass flute. You can't hear yourself playing it, but others can... it's weird.

Ultimate_FluteMaster Woot! Hey flutes!! I have a question. I just started playing pic this year and now i have to play between the flute and pic. And now I have been having embrasure problems on the flute, so is there any tips that you can give me to get better? The correct embourchure for piccolo is actually LOOSER than your flute embourchure, NOT tighter. If you're tightening up and pulling back when you play picc, you're killing your flute chops. The key word is: Relax. Think of bringing the corners of your mouth in when you play (like you're making a kissing face) rather than pulling back when you play picc. At first, you'll probably have a LOT of trouble making sound, but if you work at it enough it'll get easier. Also, when breathing, make sure you take a breath the same amount of a 16th note. Very very small. To help your flute playing, play harmonics. For instance, use the fingering for D in the staff and play an A above the staff. You do this by adding more air speed. To start out, play A with the regular fingering, and then keep the note and add the fingers for D. Once you hit the harmonic, hold it out as long as you can. You can also do this with other notes as well. It'll help with the switch from picc to flute.

This is awesome!! I can't find other flute players who aren't preppy little b****es anywhere!! My section leader this year is so freaking happy, she tries to make us depressed peole happy too, and that gets annoying after a while. Also, there's this one girl in my section who is totally awesome, but she's in Symphonic band this year. It sucks so badly 'cuz i'm in a section with a bunch of preppies, where i'd rather be in a section with all the saxophones, sorry. In my band, the saxophones are way more interesting than anybody else in the band. It's kind of sad, but it's entertaining.
