Shakuntala was given a soft, encouraging smile, and Ervette quickly took the sack from the trainee. She rifled through it, hoisting the rabbits up proudly.
"This is very, very excellent! I'm really quite pleased with how everyone is doing, fantastic. Trainee, not just one, but two rabbits. Once you skin them you can use their furs for anything you like - shelter, mainly!"
She paused and brought out the handful of berries.
"These are poisonous. They'll give you a terrible stomachache. You'll want to stay away from these. Otherwise, everything else in this bag is edible!!"

Hazel stared at the pamphlet in her hands, it was such a tiny thing, was this really all the information that they would be receiving on how to survive severe weather conditions? She felt slightly scared and worried about how unprepared she would be if say a lightning storm did occur. The words filled her head and she reread the pamphlet, trying to memorize everything. If she could remember almost everything word for word, perhaps she will have more confidence if she ever was caught in one of those situations. In hot weather it is a good thing to keep your head covered and to keep hydrated, it is best to travel at night if possible. Then in cold weather, again it is best to keep your head covered, to preserve the warmth of the body, and her new skill of building a shelter would come in handy in that weather. During a lightning storm, it was pretty much necessary to find shelter and pray that you would not be struck by lightning. Hazel frowned at the words on the page. With a sigh she closed the tiny booklet and began the quiz. Her teal eyes looked over each of the questions, this did not seem too hard. In cursive writing she filled in the answers.
1. What is the most important thing to do if you find yourself stuck in a snowstorm? When in a snow storm, it is best to create a shelter and keep as warm as possible. This could be the deciding factor between life and death. 2. What is one thing you should do when you find yourself in a lightning storm? Why do you think that is? Find shelter and stay away from tall objects that could attract a lightning strike. 3. Should you keep your head covered in hot weather? Why, or why not? Yes, this will help with regulating temperature in the body, without head protection, one could become over heated and die. 4. In hot weather, when is the best time to travel? Why? During hot weather it is best to travel at night when it is cooler. Because it is cooler and not quite as hot as the day time hours. 5. If a lightning strike is imminent, what should you do? Do not inhale, rest on the balls of your feet, and try to remain still. You will most likely know that the strike is imminent if the hairs on your arms begin to rise.

Come rate my scavenging!! I've scavenged: 1. A handful of bright purple berries. (7) 2. You construct a fishing pole, and successfully catch a fish from a small pond. (11) 3. Small purple flowers. (20) 4. You've successfully set a snare, and captured a rabbit. (14) 5. A bunch of red, glossy mushrooms. (9)
Hazel hoped that she passed the quiz, she knew that it really did not matter, but she still worried, she did not like to fail at important things. This next task though, was a whole new monster. She had no clue how to determine if something was good to eat or deadly. She bit her lip and stared at the woods around her. To her right she saw a bush of purple berries, she grabbed a handful of them. As she walked deeper in she found a small pond, building a pole out some sticks and thin bark, Hazel somehow miraculously caught a fish. She winced as she watched it flop around on the dirt; finally it stopped moving and she picked it up, letting it continue to dangle from the makeshift hook. Would the instructor teach her how to descale a fish? Purple flowers caught Hazel’s eyes and she picked a few to add to her pile.
The young woman wanted to try something new, practicing her new knot work, she created a snare, which she hid carefully beneath some green leaves. Then she walked away to find her last item. She walked about 40 feet away from her snare and spotted red glossy mushrooms, they did not look edible, but since she did not know a good mushroom from bad, she decided to pick it.
After a while she returned to her snare to see a dead rabbit. Pity for the poor creature filled the young woman, but she pushed it aside. When it came to survival she needed to be ruthless.
Hazel began to walk back to the instructor, her prizes hidden in a pouch tied to her belt and the fish and rabbit dangling from her shoulder. The blond stopped in front of Ervette, “Ma’am I have here the items I scavenged. I don’t know how to skin a rabbit or remove the scales from a fish.” Her voice was quiet, not wanting to admit that weakness, but wanting to learn how just the same.

Mykanos took the pamphlet and read through it quietly. All seemed like common sense to him. Gripping his pencil comfortably, writing and reading a skill his father had taught him... one of the few useful things that man ever did do, the hunter wrote in the answers.

Gathering. That was something he was used to, and could do. It was a natural part of life in the mountains. You had to take all you could from their usually fertile grounds, and make the best of it. A bounty just waiting for you.
Wandering along to see what he could find, Mykanos took his time picking out his items. There was no rush, after all. When he was done, he brought them back for a verdict.

Shun's gathered goods were given a cursory look.
"These flowers are edible. They won't give you much as far as nutrients go, but beggars cannot afford to be choosers. Good eye. These and these," Ervette pointed at both the red berries and the red mushrooms, "are both poisonous. Red is not a good color, generally speaking, when it comes to picking wild berries and fungus to eat. But this," Ervette lifted the garlic, "while strong, would be edible, as well as these," she tapped her finger against the purple berries.
"Overall, I have to say you've done very well for yourself, trainee."
Ervette gave Zinnia's scavenged food a very broad smile.
"This is excellent. The fish is a great source of protein, and it can be considered an excellent, constant way to get food. I have to admit, I'm impressed. The only thing you've brought back that would be inedible, trainee, are these red berries. Honestly, I say you have a whole meal on your hands, here."
She leaned in to the trainee.
"And don't worry. None of this will go to waste. We'll turn it all in to the mess hall, and everyone will be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor today."

"You do need to be able to learn how to fix the water. Usually if you boil it, you can at least make it somewhat drinkable. If, after you've boiled it, you don't trust the water, don't drink it. Find other ways to get water - for example, this tuber you've found is very starchy and watery, and would be a good way to get at least a little bit of water into you. There are also ways to purify water. You can build a purification system out of bark, burned wood, gravel and sand."
Ervette paused and rummaged around in her pack before withdrawing a conical piece of bark. There was charred wood at the top.
"Here, at the top, is the charred wood. Beneath it is gravel. Next I've layered some sand, and beneath that is grass. You pour the water in through the top, and the purified water drains out of the bottom. You can keep this one, trainee; share your new knowledge with your friends."
Zinnia beamed as Ervette praised her. She made a mental note to remember what the berries looked like so she could avoid them in the future, but was otherwise quite proud of her work. An entire meal! It hadn't taken her that long to collect, either, so if she remained that lucky she would be able to survive in the wild!
After completing his quiz, Lip immediately started his scavenging. He went over the things he would need in his head... far above all, water... then some sort of protein. Foraging through the fauna, Lip managed to find some berries and... garlic? He smiled to himself as he looked at the food he had collected thus far. He then went in search for water which wasn't as hard as he thought it would be. After boiling it, he deemed it as drinkable... again smiling. He took a deep breath looking for a stick and constructing a fishing pole out of it... He moved back over to the pond he had gotten the water from and relaxed for a little, catching fish. After collecting his items, he stretched and went to get the instructor's attention.

Alec held his pencil in his hand, staring for a long time at the pamphlet. With a long sigh, the teen realized he didn't have a clue what he was looking at or wear to begin.

He stared blankly, not even looking at the other questions. Resting his gloved hand against his face, he tapped his pencil idle like against where the answer would go. This was easily his least favorite part about all the classes he'd done thus far. Grumbling in frustration he set the pencil down sort of leaning back. Glancing over at his neighbors wouldn't be helpful..the fact he'd looked made him frown even harder.
Maybe he could just..slip away and go work on his scavenger hunt and Ervette wouldn't notice.

Lip was about to head out after doing his scavenger hunt when he noticed a familiar red head seemingly having some trouble with the test. He was fairly surprised since the other seemed to be smart enough to at least be able to copy from the pamphlet.... Recalling his name, he walked over and cleared his throat, "Uh... hey.. Alec..." He said, rubbing the back of his neck.
Alec was nearly about to the chewing on his fingernails stage, from frustration. Just about to actually get up and give up all together, he heard his name being called, greeted by his partner from the week previous.
Great. Just what he needed. Phillip making fun of him. Tensing up, the red head sort of waved in response dropping his head looking down at his lap. "Uh..hey Phillip..?" He started slowly, feeling self conscious. Looking down at his would be assignment not wanting to look at the other until he was sure he wasn't here to give him a bad time (again).

Phillip watched the other male deflate a bit, expectedly... after all, Lip was a complete a*****e to him last time they met. The auburn haired male sighed and crouched down, looking at the unanswered question. "Why haven't you done your quiz? The answers are in the pamphlet... you can literately copy them..." He mentioned... "Oh.. and...about last week... I'm sorry I was an a**..." He added, rubbing the back of his neck.
Alec actually sort of half looked up, a very brief moment before shrugging slightly at his asking why he hadn't done anything. "None of the words make sense...as always. They all just look like a jumbled mess." He answered him in a quite mumble.
"I'd do it if I had a clue what was even going on." He admitted with a small sigh. "So just been sitting here. And um.." Alec really hadn't expected an apology, especially with how the guy had acted. While confused he hesitantly nodded to him. "Thanks..Sorry too.. Shall we agree to disagree?" the red head offered after a moment, looking less put off and more at ease with the others being there. To be fair he had baited him at least once during their rough conversation. He had been backed in a corner..and hand't known how else to respond.
