((0.0 I was kidding. I'll have to start calling that number in the middle of the night, though.... twisted ))
Paal tightened up, his sword jumping up behind his head, back into proper position, dancing up and down slightly. His shield, slipping downwards slightly, jumped back up into prime, covering most of his body with thick wood. He returned the gesture of the creature by taking a short step forward as well, putting his weapon foot in front of the shield foot, hoping the added range might give him an opportunity to strike when his potential foe thought he couldn't.
And gold? Why would it want gold? Furthermore, why would it ask a nation of people clearly fleeing their home? They wouldn't (hopefully) have been fools enough to take more than a few precious things with them, and if it really wanted, money, it would just rob the abandoned homes. It didn't make sense. Paal didn't care that much. He hoped it attacked. He'd teach it a thing or two...

"Gold?!" Marilla exclaimed, before clasping a hand over her mouth. "Um..." She looked down at Sunray with a questioning look. Sunray shrugged, shaking her head as if replying, "I do not know why..."
Marilla wondered, Why is this Shadow Fiend asking for ... gold?! Does it even need gold?! And...why would it go through all this trouble just for gold?! I sure wouldn't!
Sunray seemed to read Marilla's thoughts as the pegasus replied, I am sure...that gold may be important? But honestly, I have no clue.

Aurora once again locked eyes with the Fiend. "Gold?" Aurora repeated as she found this a very odd demand at a time like this. Do I look like I'm running around with my family's treasure on me? Aurora thought sarcastically. We are running out of time, unless... Aurora suppressed a gasp as a horrible thought struck her. Was he with Devils Peak? Is the Queen going to pay him gold for my head? He hasn't spoken his allegiances, yet I can not assume anything. But gold? What can I offer him or rather this looks like a bribe to get him out of the way. I can't say I'm going to have gold later. I have a strong suspicion that the family treasure has been plundered by now. Aurora's mind raced trying to come up with an answer. She looked between the solider and the Fiend. Finally something that sounded reasonable came into her mind. "How much gold?" she asked calmly.
(( XD umm well I don't think you really had to put your phone number up but your forgiven ^^))

Marilla smiled as she heard Aurora's reply. Marilla said to Sunray telepathically, Good choice of words!
Sunray nodded her white head enthusiastically in reply.

It chuckled, thoroughly amused by the display of valor that Paal was putting forward. As foolish as the roach was... and as much as he would enjoy blowing the humanoid of his feet again, Nox had more important things to do.
He winked at Paal, then answered the Queen's next question.
"Gold for your kingdom, or gold for your head. How much is Rideron worth to you, Aurora...?"
He had not even answered her question... Perhaps he trusted the woman's judgement? And he was speaking in such an archaic fashion... it left too much to the imagination.
His eyes remained focused on Paal.
Come... His gaze was mocking the brave man. Come. Swing your sword arm. Show them all how -brave- you are...

Paal could feel the thing inviting him to strike. At first, he simply didn't want to; he didn't know who or what it was. It was the being's words that gave him justification. "Gold for your head" was no friendly statement, and Paal wasn't going to stand around and wait for somebody to lose their head.
"No," Paal told it, ignoring any diplomatic potentials. He didn't care what Aurora said; he wasn't going to wait a moment longer.
It happened in the blink of an eye. Something in his posture relaxed; his midsection twisted, and the blade was suddenly a very potent projectile merrily singing its 90 MPH way towards the shadow's head.
He hoped the shadow blocked it; he'd have to work to block the next one, as Paal brought the blade up to the left side of his head, vertical, took a step to the left with only the left leg, then twisted the other way, throwing the blade at the creature's leg. Again the movements worked to his advantage; he took another step, this time to the right, squaring himself against his opponent, then brought the blade up to behind his head, letting it drop, reaching out his arm as though to snap the blade at the back of its head... then letting the blade fall all the way down to its leg, as a snap of his midsection pulled the blade in towards him - and therefore the shadow - much more quickly.
Whatever happened, it was now too late to disengage.

Aurora stared hard at the fiend. Again he had avoided her question. She was growing tiresome of this. Free of the fiend stare, she glanced around to see how her people were holding up. What she took is was that many had fled, unfortunately. Yet she found that many have been gather around the scene. As she snapped her attention back to to the fiend in front of her, the brave soldier had attacked. As she watched the attack silently, she slid her free hand up under her vest and pulled out her hand, but clutching something. She decided to see how this plays out, for the moment at least.

Marilla watched all this, glancing from Aurora to the Fiend and then to Paal. Then, what happened next happened all in a flash. Paal...attacked?! Yes, the soldier started to attack the Shadow Fiend. Sunray reared back for a moment, and then calmed down. Both Marilla and Sunray's eyes were locked on Paal's weapon.

Esiri blinked, then gave a small smile. The human wasn't half bad. She was growing tired of the Fiend's "I am untouchable" air. She wanted nothing more at that moment than to beat the smirk off that dark face, but she knew that neither she (currently), the army, or Felicia could do much. But at least the brave soldier was fighting for all he was worth. Maybe the man would wipe away that irksome smirk.
"That isn't very likely, unfortunately."
Esiri'd been surprised to hear that the Fiend wanted gold. What in this world or the next would a SHADOW FIEND want with gold!? Hell! Esiri was sure judging by the looks of this one, he could probably march right up to a kingdom and take it over single-handed. No wonder the higer ups in Spirit World sent her to the mortal plane! If only they'd known how bad things really were...
She waited patiently, waiting to 'jump' over there if things got too out of control with the Fiend. He may have been made of the shadows, but Esiri's weapons were made of the light. She knew he was not a Demon, but Esiri also knew he'd definitely feel her weapons sharp kiss of light, Demon or Fiend.

((I'm sorry, I need some clarification. Bayer, how many swords does Paal have? How many did he throw? 2?))

((He only has one weapon; by throwing, I mean "throwing a blow." He's hacking at you, bottom line. Sorry if that was confusing; I'll probably do it again, too.))

It howled triumphantly as Paal took the bait.
Just because a Shadow Fiend isn't human doesn't mean it cannot lie. He knew that human needed justification to strike. After all, it appeared that Paal was (tragically) a man of high "morality." So Nox had touched the right nerves, and thrown the right switches. The roach was his.
Yet the roach was fast. Very fast. He watched with a sense of fascination as the human's sword whistle through the air at a near superhuman speed. In fact, it was superhuman. What was this creature? Nox mused. His fighting style, as well... it seemed unique. Of course, that was a lie. There was no such thing. Even his own fighting style was a fusion of the martial techniques of several warring nations over many hundreds of years. Yet as of now he could not put a finger on exactly where this humanoid was from, or where it had learned to fight... No matter. The man had a strange fighting style. So did Nox. If Paal thought to best him with that manner of reasoning, then perhaps the insect would drop dead of its own stupidity. He would not waste his effort. They were not worthy to bear witness to his true form.
These thoughts transpired in a single wink of time.
The blade was upon Nox in the matter of a fraction of a second. However, the Shadow Fiend was verily anticipating Paal's attacked. He had, after all, provoked it. He had shifted his "weight" as he had spoken, and kept Paal's focus on his eyes as he had done so.
Now, as the blade lunged towards Nox's neck, Nox's neck sprung away from the blade.
It fell from its feet, mouth still wide in that wicked grin of its. But as it fell, a sort of clucked, reprimanding sound clicked through Nox's razor fangs.
"Tch tch tch..." The Shadow Fiend scolded, as its form fell into the earth and melted in that instant.
As much as Nox would have loved to parlay with Paal, he simply didn't have the motivation for it. His real reasons for spurning the man had been to see what his breaking point was, for Paal is what could be considered a "dangerous" individual for a fellow like Nox. One of those swaggering, confident yet humble hero types who enjoy indulging himself in selflessness and valor. Now he knew.
Within the dark, roiling blackness of the Shadow Walk, the collective conscience that was Nox's made its next move. It chose its next target. As if there was any second thought. He was here for one reason.
The shadows beside Aurora, below Marilla and Sunray, exploded upwards as if a cannonball had been plunged into the sea. There was no force in this eruption, no lethal tricks. It was simply the fanfare for Nox's next entrance.
There was general chaos as the small wall of men that had formed to protect Aurora from a frontal attack caved in on itself as the men stumbled around to see what was going on.

Marilla watched the Shadow Fiend carefully...and then Sunray neighed out of shock as the Shadow Fiend seemed to spring upwards. Sunray flapped her wings, flitting higher up into the air, and then gliding as her legs seemed to gallop on invisible pathways in the air. Marilla then turned her gaze to Princesss Aurora - wondering what the Princess would do next.
Marilla and Sunray were still both puzzled as to why the Fiend wanted gold.
