[Roll 1] [Roll 2] [Roll 3]
Nataniel almost never dreamed.
He kept his mind consistently occupied throughout the day: awake, alert, and always thinking. Maybe there wasn't energy left by the time night fell to conjure nonsense thoughts while he tried to sleep. Maybe he wasn't creative enough. Nataniel couldn't say for sure why he typically slept dreamlessly, but it had never bothered him enough to think too hard on it. Dreaming seemed... pointless? Unnecessary? Wasteful, perhaps, since he should be using that time to recoup for the following day.
He didn't need to dream. There was no reason to. So when darkness pulled on him, making his stomach lurch as blackness reared up to swallow him, Nat felt a stab of shock and confusion lance its way through him before anything else registered.
And then he was plummeting with a started gasp, being dragged down and down and down by a force he couldn't identify. Where- and How- and (his favorite) Why- were among the first things to course through his mind as he landed firmly on solid ground, devoid of any sensation besides realizing that he had stopped. He should be accustomed to the strange things Destiny City brought upon its residents, but Nataniel still shivered at the sky above. Still blinked in confusion at the swath of sky bespeckled with glinting stars.
Where was he? How had this happened? Why was he here?
A quiet cough made him spin around to face the darkness, and Nataniel froze briefly where he stood. There was someone else here? He adjusted his glasses, having just the flicker of the thought that it was odd they were on his face now, since he'd obviously fallen asleep without them. He knew the figure. It was the same being that had flitted through the galaxy with him last year, during another bizarre dream under the stars.
He reached for his pockets, as if intending to bring out something to show that he remembered her- but of course there was nothing to show. Few things had come with him into this dreamscape. So Nataniel only gave her a polite dip of his head and a tiny shrug.
The being may have recognized him, as well (which, why wouldn't she? If she was something Nataniel's mind managed to conjure when he dreamed), because she gave him an apologetic look before a flash of realization crossed its features. As a naturally inquisitive and curious man, Nataniel took a step nearer to the celestial being, close enough the when she produced a handful of glitter from her shroud, he had time to see it and shoot her a grimace before she flung it up into the air.
"Glitter is truly the theme of the festival this year, hm?" He grumbled. The stuff littered the parks and fountains and any other public meeting space. And it clung to every bit of fabric it touched.
Nataniel dusted himself off as if hers clung as well, glowering at her pointedly as he did.
But her glitter hadn't fallen at all, it had formed a delicate spiral staircase, reaching high and up out of the ravine. The being gestured at him, clearly not put off at all by his foul expressions. She flicked delicate fingers at him and then pointed up, up, as if to ask, 'You want out, don't you?'
It had almost not even occurred to Nat to be concerned. If this was a dream, he would wake from it with no further effort on his part. He wasn't pleased by the idea of potentially exhausting himself on some sporadic climb to the top of a dauntingly tall staircase... But the being was insistent. If he wanted to wake up, if he wanted out, he better get going. This was all the help that would be given to him, after all.
Nataniel sighed softly as he turned a reluctant gaze toward the stairs. He kept his posture stiff and upright, but he grumbled as though this were a great chore and a terrible burden.
It was.
But he climbed, anyway. Up and up, trading the darkness of the ravine for the dim lighting of the night sky. The glittery staircase glinted at him as if winking, and if he glanced down, he realized he couldn't see the being, anymore. He was lucky he was built for endurance, lucky that he jogged in the mornings and trained diligently with other agents. If he'd been weaker, this would have been harder.
Because even in a dream, Nataniel could feel the strain of it on his muscles. Falling from a great height had felt like nothing, but climbing such a height made his legs burn and ache as though he were actually working out. Ludicrous. Basic nonsense.
He reached the top-
And started awake in his bed, bolting upright with a short gasp of breath. The aches had dissipated. His bedroom came into view around him, though still blurry, since his glasses were set on his nightstand, sitting next to a blue star charm from the day prior. And beside those, a small vial of glistening glitter.
